When Intuition is Silent

We all have those times when we just don’t know what to do. You’re rolling along in life and all seems good when out of the blue something unexpected happens. It might be an illness, an accident, or you got laid off at work. Most of us try to rely on our intuition and figure out the next steps. However, what do you do when your intuition seems silent and no answers arrive?

That happened to me several years ago. One of my books, Listen: Trusting Your Inner Voice in Times of Crisis, had just been published. I was out on the lecture circuit and giving seminars, scheduling lots of radio shows and interviews, traveling a great deal. It probably sounds exciting, but to be honest, I was exhausted.

I prayed to God to bring peace back into my life. I wasn’t sleeping. I wasn’t eating well. I felt awful. What did I hear back? Nothing. Silence. I felt like I was in a dead zone. This was particularly painful to me because my book was all about paying attention to inner guidance and I wasn’t hearing any! All I knew was that I needed to rest.

It would be great if intuition spoke to us in a clear, direct manner. “Hey Lynn! I know you’re struggling in your life. Here’s the answer…” Followed, of course, with detailed instructions about what you should and shouldn’t do in order to be successful. In the bible, God spoke to Moses from a burning bush. (I don’t know about you, but if a burning bush started yelling at me I’d definitely run in the other direction!) But truthfully, don’t you long for this kind of guidance when you need direction?

I know that in my life during that dark period, I had no down time. I was ON all the time. All my energy just seemed to go out to other people — talking, helping, counseling, teaching. I wasn’t taking time for myself. There wasn’t any room in my psyche for spirit to reach me.

What I finally realized was there was a mantra of sorts going through my mind at all times. It wasn’t your typical “Om” kind of mantra. It was “I NEED TO SLOW DOWN!” I suddenly realized I was missing my intuition communicating with me because I was drowning out this inner wisdom out with activity. I got so involved in my book promotion and other work that the guidance simply was lost in the crowd. It wasn’t until I really took some time to rest, to focus on myself, to be in nature, to sleep, that I felt the reassuring presence of my intuition again.

Following are some things that I found helpful during my “intuition is silent” period.

Rest, Sleep, Dream and Recover

Intuition often seems to go away during those times of our lives when we most need guidance. It may be because we’re so exhausted we’re not taking time to listen. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do to feel better today? ” Whatever answer comes to you, do it. Answers I’ve received include, “Take a break and sit outside in the sun for awhile.” “Take a walk in the woods.” “Put your head on the pillow and rest.” “Read a comforting book.” “It’s time to turn the computer off.” Know in your heart these times of “silence” don’t last forever.

Talk and Listen

If you are waiting through a time of silence ask your inner guidance these questions:

Is there something that needs my attention?
Is there something I’m unaware of that I need to resolve?
What does my inner wisdom want me to learn?
Am I being prepared for something?

I realize that you’re reading this article because you’re concerned about the radio silence from your intuition, so you’re probably not having immediate answers popping into your mind. Try a journal. Write out any responses that come to you. Perhaps simply think of someone you love and who loves you, and they’re giving you kind and loving wisdom and advice.

What You Say to Yourself Matters

You may be telling yourself that you’re doing something wrong, you’re not good enough or you’re being punished. My guess is that none of those things are true. Try one or more of the following statements while you’re going through this difficult period.

My intuition has guided me in the past and continues to do so.
There are many ways to hear guidance. I am open to wisdom in all forms.
I am provided with all that I need with comfort and ease, even in the silence.

Find Pockets of Quietude

In our culture we believe that doing, taking action, and making the effort are the most important ways to get out of a crisis. What if the opposite is true? What if you give yourself permission to simply be, and rest in order to find peace and solutions to your current confusion? Learning to listen requires two things: a practice that facilitates quieting the mind, such as meditation, prayer, or communing with nature; and an understanding or discovery of how you receive the answers.

Listen for Intuition in New Ways

You may be expecting inner guidance to show up in a big and theatrical way — a flash of lightning, a dramatic rescue, a big booming voice from the heavens. Sometimes that happens. More often it’s through words of wisdom from other people, a TV show or a book. The answers may be revealed through nature, or a gentle smile from a stranger walking our way. Often it shows up as a fleeting moment of peace and tranquility in the midst of a difficult day. Sometimes it’s simply a word or two to give us a new direction to follow.

My best advice regarding a silent intuition is, keep praying, keep writing, keep reading, keep walking the path before you. Keep doing the things that have worked in the past (and will work again in the future). Know that we’ve all gone through these times of silence. Ultimately, this too shall pass. In the meantime, “be still and know” that the wisdom within is there guiding you always. Everything will work out okay.

4 Powerful Confidence Boosters You Can Use Today

“I wish I could________(fill in the blank.) But, I don’t have the confidence.”

If you’ve muttered the words above you’re not alone. I frequently hear these thoughts expressed by my intuitive reading clients. Most of us feel at least a little anxious if not downright scared when we contemplate trying something new. It requires a leap of faith and…what if we fail? What then? What separates the folks who succeed from those who stay stuck in the low self-confidence rut?

What hopes/goals/dreams do you have? Perhaps it’s to own your own business, learn a new skill, buy your first home or even to begin dating again. That’s your intuition encouraging you to move out of your comfort zone!

Here are four powerful ideas that you can use today to increase your confidence and move in the direction of success.

Use a Confidence Boosting Ritual

There are all sorts of techniques that successful people use to get beyond their fear. One of the most common is to assume the “Wonder Woman” or “Superman” stance. To do this, stand up straight with your shoulders back and put your hands on your hips.

Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale say to yourself one or all of the following:

“I can do this!” “

Things are going to change for the better now.”

“I am strong and confident.”

“I act with confidence and courage and things work out for me.”

As you say these statements really feel their meaning deep inside you. In other words, say it like you mean it!

Ask Yourself the Right Questions

Your intuition can guide you to the most successful outcome when you learn to ask good questions. Instead of questions like, “What’s wrong with me?” Why am I blocked?” Or “Why can’t I…make more money, have a great relationship, find a good job, etc.?” Try these instead: “What’s my right next step?” “What could I do to feel better right now?” “What does my gut tell me about this situation?” “What do I need to know today?” “What’s the best way to proceed?”

The answer doesn’t usually come via a big booming voice. Often it will arrive as a still, quiet inner voice, an “aha” moment, or an idea to try something new that hadn’t occurred to you before. Intuition is your inner compass pointing you in the right direction.

Change Your Thinking

“It won’t work.” “I’m not good at this.” “These things never go my way, so why bother?” “That’s impossible!” These are statements that people use that are the preamble for failure. Begin to recognize the common statements you use that make you feel discouraged and hopeless. See if you can begin to shift them in a positive direction. Examples are: “I’m willing to see things differently.” “I’m resourceful enough to handle any setbacks that come my way.” I’m finding it easier to focus on my goals and follow through.” “Things have a way of working out.” Do a Google search for self-confidence affirmations. Try out some that you find empowering. Write them on post-it notes and place them where you’ll see them: in your wallet, on a mirror or on the wall of your office.

Move Out of Your Comfort Zone

Everyone has a different set of circumstances that make up their comfort zone. When you choose to move out of the perceived safety of the known and into the unknown, miracles will begin to occur. With each risk you take, you’ll start to feel more and more comfortable. You’ll find that the Universe will start to deliver your dreams to you more quickly. Your self-confidence and self-esteem will improve and you’ll begin to feel powerful. Your vision of yourself and what you can achieve in the world will begin to expand. As you become bigger, you’ll find you can hold a vision of what you want to achieve, and before you know it, success will be yours. You already have more power than you can imagine! What can you do today to step out of your comfort zone and begin to build your self-confidence muscles?

Powerful self-confidence probably won’t develop overnight. Learn to take baby steps and notice the small shifts in your life. They will show up as less anxiety, more ease in making changes and an increase in the knowledge that you are moving towards your goals and intentions. Self-confidence is a wonderful thing. It’s the building block for creating a life you love. You deserve it!

How to Thrive in Uncertain Times

“When am I going to get through this?” wailed Sally in our intuitive reading session. “I’ve been praying, saying affirmations, and visualizing like crazy and I still don’t have a job!” It’s something I hear on a regular basis. When you desperately want something to happen, it never seems to come fast enough.

Is there a secret to achieving huge results quickly? Can I speed up my success? Is there a lesson to be learned before a goal is accomplished? Why does it seem like manifesting and Law of Attraction is working for everyone else except me? Sound like you?

In my ideal world you would receive a small box at the beginning of a crisis, neatly tied with a bow. Inside, it would have three pieces of information:

1) Here is the lesson you are meant to learn by going through this particular life challenge.

2) Here’s what you could do to make this time in your life easier.

3) Here is the end date to your current crisis.

Details would follow each of the above. For example, after #3 it might read: “On May 15 of next year, you will…have a wonderful job…meet your soul mate…experience a miracle healing…win the lottery…successfully end your court case… fill in the blank!”

When You’re Doing Everything Right

Oh, if only life were so easy! How do you wait? What do you do when your life is on hold… seemingly forever? Like Sally, you may feel like you’ve been set adrift on a vast ocean, praying for rescue and yet still not seeing signs of land or help. Every one of us has gone through times when progress appears to stall, stop or even go backwards. Yes, even the people who have achieved great success. It doesn’t mean you are doing something wrong. It’s also not a “sign from above” that you are destined for failure or that you’re on the wrong track.

The honest truth is that setbacks, disappointments and outright failure are often part of the bumpy path called life. These crises challenge our way of thinking. They get us to try new things, to look at life in a whole new way and to gain strength in our weak areas. Life disasters test everything about us but can ultimately build courage, inner wisdom, faith and integrity, as well as clarity about our dreams and intentions.

Notice Your Persistent Thoughts

If you’re like most of us, it’s difficult to wrest your thoughts away from your current misfortune. It may be your rapidly dwindling bank account, a job loss, a spouse’s infidelity, a health challenge with your child, or any combination of situations that threaten your hard-won peace of mind. You simply find yourself scared, aggravated and anxious. Your mind is filled with negative thoughts like, “I’ll never be good enough,” “Things don’t work out for me,” “I must be doing something wrong,” or “I’ll never get out of debt.”

You may recognize the fact that thoughts like the above simply breed more counter-productive thoughts and feelings. You’re putting your focus on what isn’t working. The Law of Attraction states that we attract life circumstance based on what we’re predominately feeling and thinking. Let’s take the statement “Things don’t work out for me.” When that persistent thought runs through your head all you can see is evidence that supports it. “I got overlooked for a promotion at work. I didn’t get a raise. My son is getting a ‘C’ in math at school. My husband is coming home late. My car needs repairs…” Stop! It’s clearly time to shift your thinking!

A Magnet for Success…or Failure?

When you think negative thoughts you attract more negative thoughts, negative people, negative experiences, negative results and yet more negative thoughts. Who needs that? Certainly not you or anyone else who wants to turn their life around and create success, peace, joy, abundance, love or any other wonderful situation!

So what can you do when you find the external circumstances of your life seemingly not going in the right direction? Start to put the focus on what is working. Even in the midst of crisis there are moments of joy. Here’s the big secret to turning life around; begin to notice the good, wonderful, surprising and precious things that are currently happening in your life.

Shift Your Thinking

How do you do that? Let’s take our friend Sally, who is concerned that her prayers for a job are not being answered quickly enough. Her work experience had been in public relations. When I listened to her talk about her day, it was a litany of complaints. “The traffic was awful on the way to that job interview and I know I wasn’t even considered for the job because I was late.” And, “I went on four interviews at the same company last month and they didn’t even have the courtesy to tell me they gave the job to someone else.” She added, “The economy is so awful. Everyone with my skill set is getting laid off so I probably won’t even find work in my field.”

Nothing was going Sally’s way. I listened to her complain and rant for about ten minutes. Simultaneously, I was checking in with my own intuition about how I could be of assistance to her. I knew that she was blocking her own inner wisdom that was seeking to show her some new avenues for abundance and success. I suspected her negativity was overriding all the positive inner wisdom her intuition was trying to provide.

Finally, I held up my hand and said, “Sally, what good things are happening in your life right now?” She stopped suddenly and stared at me as her eyes welled up with tears. She spoke slowly, “I’m a single parent. I have a son who is nine and I just adore him. He’s the love of my life. This period of unemployment has allowed me to spend more time with him. He’s doing better in school. The teachers have noticed a huge improvement. He’s making friends and seems to feel more at ease with himself. I wish I could get a job with a flexible schedule so I could be there for him even more.”

“Pushing Against” Versus “Allowing”

Sally continued talking about what she was grateful for and what she really wanted in a job. It became apparent to both of us that finding another high-pressure public relations job was not an ideal situation at this time in her life. As she softened while talking about her son, she spoke about having a desire to be self-employed, to make her own hours and work from home.

I could see and feel the energy shift as she talked about this idea. Feelings of enthusiasm, relief, excitement and interest are ways that intuition communicates. Sally was exhibiting all of these. “What’s stopping you from doing this?” I asked. She started to sputter about the bad economy, layoffs, you-name-it, and then caught herself. She said, “There isn’t anything in my way. In fact, a small company I interviewed with last month asked me if I’d be willing to work on a freelance basis instead of full-time. I guess I just wasn’t open to the idea. I could start there and take some strategic action to add a few more clients. This could work!”

I heard from Sally a few monthslater. She reported that she was handling the public relations for two small companies on a freelance basis and was about to add a third one. I loved what she said, “I look back at those months of unemployment as a gift. It was horrible and painful to go through, but I’ve come out the other side with enough joy and stability to make it all worth it. I realized I had been taking a lot of action towards something I really didn’t want – the high-pressure job. The pain of that experience really forced me to go beyond my comfort zone. It gave me permission to do something I’ve always wanted to do. If I hadn’t been forced to the wall, I may not have taken the risk. I’m not making as much money as I was, but I know things will get better. For both me and my son I’m glad that it all worked out. Life is a pleasure now.”

You may feel like a trapeze artist in these “in-between” times. You’ve let go of one bar and find yourself hurtling through space hoping to catch the next bar where you can hopefully rest safely for a while. The space between is often filled with fear, anxiety and desperation. Will you get to reach that next bar safely? What can you do when your own life is in this natural, yet uneasy place?

Take Daily Positive Action

Creating a big change in your life can be downright overwhelming. Where do you begin? This is the biggest hurdle for most of us. Don’t give up on your dream because the path from here (where you are) to there (where you want to be) seems too daunting. Commit to taking at least one action each day that will lead you in the direction you want to go. Ask your intuition, “What could I do today that will help me __________?” Fill in the blank with your current goal. Pay attention to any thoughts or ideas that feel interesting, fun or have some energy to them. Then take those steps!

What would you be saying to yourself a year from now if you’re thriving, successful and flourishing? Some people like to record these statements. Others find it effective to imagine friends, relatives and colleagues congratulating them on their success. You can also write notes to yourself acknowledging your victories. Play with this. It’s meant to be fun and not tedious. It can be a wonderful way to acknowledge your greatness while you’re on the often-uneven path to success.

How to Follow Your Bliss

One of the ways your intuition informs you is through what makes you happy or excited! When you’re happy about something, or you simply enjoy thinking about it, that’s your intuition giving you the message, “Do more of this!”

What would a delightful or blissful life look or feel like to you? You might want to describe it in a journal. Another alternative would be to create a vision board by using images and words from magazines or the Internet.

Write About Your Ideal Life

As you write or create the vision board, notice if there are any negative thoughts or feelings that arise as you imagine living a life you love. This, too, is also helpful information from your intuition, and may indicate an area of resistance for you to examine.

The Power of Your Imagination

Once you’re finished, close your eyes and imagine yourself living this life. Put as much feeling and emotion into this image as you can. The ability to manifest your ideal life has a lot to do with your ability to feel a flow of clear, positive energy about what you want to create.

At present, don’t try to figure out HOW you will create your ideal life. As you imagine, visualize and feel it, trust that you are sending out an energy vibration to the Universe that will begin to attract what you desire. Your intuition will begin to respond with “clues” about what to do, who to talk to or any actions for you to take.

What Does Your Intuition Say?

Over the next several days begin to pay attention to any “aha” moments and/or intuitive nudges. Also notice any synchronicities or coincidences that begin to occur. Those are some of the ways intuition will communicate.

Spend just a few moments every day doing this exercise, and you’ll find your heart’s desire quickly attracted into your life.

I Love Japan!

I know that I have many clients from Japan on this newsletter list. If you’re one of them, you may enjoy this YouTube clip from Japanese bestselling author Ken Honda speaking about how we met over a decade ago. He’s also talking about the power of synchronicity and coincidence and their connection with intuition.

How to Stay Calm When Life Gets Crazy!

Change is a constant in all of our lives. I’m experiencing it right now! My husband and I are selling our home on Cape Cod and looking forward to a move to Southern Maine to be closer to family. I’m excited and my head is filled with all of the details that are involved in a change of this kind.

Several years ago I wrote Listen: Trusting Your Inner Voice in Times of Crisis. I interviewed many people who were going through a life transition (divorce, job change, health challenge, etc.) for my book. I thought it might be helpful to re-read what I wrote given my current life changes! Here are the top five suggestions they had for making this time of change a little easier.

Discover Spiritual Sustenance

Prayer, meditation, down-time, spending time in nature, asking for intuitive guidance and reading inspirational books were the most frequently mentioned ways to acknowledge and flow with the tough times.

Prayer and meditation soften our hearts our hearts. It is most often done in moments of silence. Prayer requires a vulnerability and openness to make way for something new. It may be a new idea, a belief, or simply a shift in consciousness that allows you to see the world through different eyes.

Use a Favorite Affirmation

Affirmations can be simple, positive phrases that describe the life you want. Or, they can be a powerful expression that helps you feel calmer during times of stress.

Common ones that people used were:

“Every day in every way, my life is getting better and better.”
“Things have a way of working out for me.”
“My intuition is my guide and I take time to listen within.”
“I let go and let God.”
“I am calm and relaxed as I move through my day.”

Do Something Fun Every Day

When life throws you a curve ball, it’s all to easy to let it ruin your day.  If that happens to you consistently, consider making a list of small pleasures. These can be your go-to items when a challenge arises. These don’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. Favorite items that my interviewees noted were:

Having coffee with a friend.
Making time to read an enjoyable book.
Watching a funny movie.
Taking a short walk.
Treating yourself to a manicure.
Go out for ice cream.
Take a bike ride.
Playing with a child.
Spending time in the garden.
Cranking up some tunes and dancing.

Remember: This too Shall Pass

Most likely you’ve gone through a life transition before. It could be a positive, but anxiety-producing time such as graduating from college, getting a first job, or becoming a new parent. What helped you then?

Each time you face a new challenge, remember to concentrate on the skills, talents and resources that enabled you to survive the last rough patch. Life does change, and usually for the better. Be patient as life unfolds.

Embrace All That Life Offers

What if the current challenge you’re facing were meant for your good? Albert Einstein asked the famous question, “Is the Universe a friendly place?” I say YES! The change you’re experiencing is a letting go of the old and a making way for the new. Embrace all that comes your way. Know that you are being led to even more expansion, more love, more joy. Know that God is with you and guiding your path. Tune in and listen for that still, quiet voice within. The answers you seek are there.

Wake up to Inner Guidance

Intuition is like any skill. The more you use it, the better you get at it. I’d like to share a technique that I do almost every morning. The best part? You can do it while you’re still in bed!

Step One: Think about something you’d like to create in your life. It doesn’t need to be super specific. It can be “I’d love to have a fun and rewarding new job.” Or, “I’d love to be in a happy and loving partnership.”

Step Two: This is where intuition comes in. It’s a super easy and fun technique!

Each day take at least one small step toward what you’re excited about.

Excitement, curiosity and interest are all ways that your intuition communicates with you. It’s saying, in effect, “this way to success and happiness.” It directs you towards the easiest path to a life you love.

What does a small step look like? Here are some ideas:

Take a class
Research your interest
Send an email
Take a trip
Strike up a conversation with a stranger
Make a phone call
Join a group
Take a walk
Talk to someone who has aspects of your ideal life
Do something to move out of your comfort zone
Volunteer
Tweak a website, resume or blog

Remember…your interest or excitement is a message from your intuition about the next step to take. Whatever it is — do it!

Your goal should be to enjoy this process. Do things each day that are fun, light, and joyful. Learn to be grateful for all that you’ve created. As you move towards your desired outcome, you’ll find synchronicities, coincidences and new ideas emerging. People who can help you achieve your goals will show up in your life and miracles will begin to unfold. Your inner wisdom wants you to succeed.

Remember to have fun! Let me know what you come up with. I love reading your comments!
