The Secret Spiritual Technique to Help You Find Calm

This year was one of those crazy times for me. I was promoting my latest book, “Put Your Intuition to Work.” My husband had some health challenges. My mom has Alzheimer’s. I also ran my business full-time. I could go on. But you get the idea. In other words, I was stressed and burned out.

Now, I know that all of us go through these times. I understand that I’m not exempt from life crises and changes. However, I write books and speak on the topic of creating a life you love. I told myself, “I’m not supposed to be stressed!” Which only added to my stress. (What can I say? I’m human!)

It seems like a badge of honor these days to claim to be “crazy busy.” But when did that get to be a good thing?! One day I found myself so frazzled and overwhelmed I decided to do what I tell my clients to do. Meditate.

At first my mind was jumping around thinking of everything I wasn’t accomplishing on my “to do” list. I would think, “Slow down. Ommm…”

My brain would reply, “Remember to buy bananas, change the cat litter, return the call from the radio show producer.” On and on the battle went. This was not producing the relaxation response I was seeking.

The Wisdom of the Inner Voice

Finally, after about ten minutes of struggle, something happened. I can only describe it as a wave of peace. The constant brain chatter stopped and I felt like I was wrapped in a bubble of love and compassion. I continued to sit there almost in tears. Then I heard a voice. It said, “Lynn, let life be easy.”

I could feel a bit of defensiveness rise up in me. “But I have things to do! I have places to be! People are counting on me! What do you mean by “easy?!”

Again, the voice said, “Let life be easy.” All at once, I saw how stressed I had been. I became aware that all of the rushing around and carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders was no longer working. I saw then that I was pushing against the flow of life. I also understood that I couldn’t operate that way any longer.

Intuition often communicates through this inner voice. It also comes as an “aha moment” where you have an instant knowing about a situation. Part of the message I received was that God, (the Universe, Infinite Wisdom) was on my side. That our default position in life is health, love, prosperity, compassion and joy. When we are out of this flow of energy, we experience what was occurring in my life: stress, overwhelm and exhaustion. I needed to remember that life could be easy.

Here are my top four suggestions for being in flow and ease:

1) Try This Secret Spiritual Technique

Write a letter to God describing your concerns and worries. Write it as if you’re talking with a good friend and sharing your concerns. Pour out your worries, fears and anxieties on the page.

Then go a step further.  Make a specific request of God to help you in a certain way. Yours might be “Help me to feel calm.”  If you’re worried about money, write “I am open to prosperity and abundance.” If you’re worried about a relationship, write “Please restore harmony and love between us.”

Add the words, “…if this is in my highest interest.” I like to think God is interested in helping us with our specific concerns and will assist us in unique ways that we could never have come up with on our own. Put these requests in a small box on your desk or nightstand.  I label mine with the words “Surrender Box.”

I figure that the Power that created the Universe and all its inhabitants will certainly know how to assist each of us in an easy and effortless way.

2) Close Your Eyes and Listen

This one is deceptively simple. However, if you’re overwhelmed, you need something easy. When you find yourself feeling anxious and irritable, stop what you’re doing, close your eyes and take several slow, deep breaths. You may find it even more helpful to put your hand over your heart. It has a calming effect.

As you open the spaciousness of mind and heart for a change of perspective, ask yourself, “What would be helpful right now?” Listen for your intuition — the whisper of your inner voice. It may also come as a feeling, an image or a physical sensation. What answer do you receive? What step could you take based on this wisdom?

3) Choose a Calming Phrase

When you’re feeling agitated and anxious, it may help to bring to mind a line in the book A Course in Miracles, which says, “I could choose peace instead of this.” Take a few deep, calming breaths and ask yourself, “How else could I be thinking about this?” or “What would bring me peace in this situation?” Sometimes the best thing to say is the simplest. “This too shall pass.” Or, “It’s okay. I can deal with this.” Or my new favorite, “I let this be easy.”

If a spiritual approach is comforting to you, simple phrases or mantras may be helpful to keep you centered and connected to Spirit. Here are some examples:

I am loved, protected and safe.
I feel Divine peace flowing through me now.
Peace be with me and also with you.
Everything is okay. I slow down and appreciate all that I have.

4) Accept Things as They Are

Overwhelm often comes when we want things to be different from the way they are. Cultivate a sense of gratitude for what life brings to you. Whether you’re feeling panicked by deadlines at work, homework with the kids, or your upcoming doctor visit, it pays to bring awareness back to the matter at hand. It makes the task feel more achievable.

I like this quote from Douglas Bloch, who wrote, “As you begin to live in the present moment, you will experience a subtle but profound change. Worrying about the future will cease. A deep peace will enfold you, a peace that says, ‘All is well. There is nothing to fear. Everything is unfolding according to plan, and you are being guided each step along the way.’”

So, my friends…what wise advice are you hearing from YOUR inner guidance today? I’d love to hear about it!

God’s Payroll

“Don’t worry. You’re on God’s payroll. Ask for what you need.”

It became immediately clear to me that I had been so focused on lack — what I didn’t have and what I feared — that I had forgotten to focus on what I wanted and needed. Here’s a short video on the topic. Enjoy and let me know your thoughts. I love hearing from you.

Want to Create A Life You Adore? Try this intuitive experiment!

I love doing intuitive readings to help people figure out what they want in life. It’s gratifying to be able to provide insights that will allow them to achieve their dreams. Do you want to know what stops most people?

They don’t dream big enough, so they feel uninspired to move forward.
They talk themselves out of the dream. “I can’t afford it.” “I’m not educated enough.” “I don’t deserve it.” Or “I don’t know how to achieve it” are common statements.

It’s hard to create a life you adore if you do any of these things!

Would you like to try an experiment to get you moving in a new direction?

I’m going to ask you to try some things on pure faith. Try to put aside your natural inclination to make logical sense of this process. Here are the concepts:

There is a Divine Intelligence that wants you to succeed. It wants you to be happy about your life and living. It wants you to do the thing or things you’re passionate about. That’s part of your mission here on Earth. It doesn’t matter what that mission is, whether it’s being a good mother or father, a great dancer, a whiz at accounting, an awe-inspiring athlete or a profound philosopher. This Intelligence wants you to succeed and will do whatever it can to assist you.
Take 15-20 minutes to yourself where you won’t be disturbed. Think about the life you want. On your computer or a pad of paper write the answers to the following questions. What does your ideal day, week or month look like?

What are you doing?

Is it different from month to month?

Who are you with?

What brings you joy or makes you feel excited or curious?

If you’re more of a visual person you might find it helpful to do this exercise with a batch of magazines and a pair of scissors. Cut out pictures and words that represent the life you want.

As you do the exercise in #2, be aware of your self-talk. What are you saying to yourself about your ability to achieve this new life? You will need to work diligently at keeping your focus off what you don’t want and maintain focus on your goal. Learn to re-direct your thoughts. When you notice yourself dwelling on pessimistic or negative thoughts, shift your focus to what you want.

Take time each day to visualize your ideal life. Some people can’t SEE it, but they can feel it. That’s fine, too. In this way you add power to the vibrational energy that will attract your goal. Your feelings and emotions are an important part of this process. What does it feel like to have what you want? Use the power of your emotions as you visualize.

Each day take at least one step toward what you’re excited about. This might mean taking a class, going to an informational interview, joining a club or association, writing an article, making a call, or sending an e-mail. Your excitement is a message from your intuition about the next step to take. Whatever it is — do it!

Your goal should be to enjoy this process. Learn to be grateful for all that you’ve created. As you move towards your desired outcome, you’ll find new objectives emerging. That’s fine and as it should be. Remember to have fun!

What did you come up with? I’d love to read your answers!

Are You a “Negative Nelly?”

Shift your thinking and change your life.

Years ago, I had a roommate who was incredibly negative. One evening “Theresa” and I arrived home from work after a particularly long day. Neither of us had eaten dinner and we were just plain hungry, cranky and tired. The circumstances provoked a heated debate about some world issue.

As usual, I was promoting an optimistic view of the situation. Theresa, who was always pessimistic about things, took the negative view. She was quite adamant that her view was right. She was so incensed with me that at one point she stamped her foot, put her hand on her hip and proclaimed…

“I think you are PATHOLOGICALLY POSITIVE!”

I have to admit that I burst out laughing at this comment, which didn’t help Theresa’s mood one bit. I just thought it was incredibly funny and I will cherish it for the rest of my life!

Remembering that story got me to thinking…Have you ever been around someone who is a complainer or fear monger? It’s draining! “The gas prices are awful.” “The economy is going down the tubes.” “The recession will never end.” “There are no jobs out there.”

If you find yourself thinking like this, shift your focus. What you say to yourself is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. It may take some work to change your habitual thoughts but it’s worth the effort. Try saying things like,

“Let me be open to new ideas.”

“Things have a way of working out for me.”

“The economy may be bad, but I’m open and receptive to new avenues of income.”

“I’ve gotten through tough times before. I’ll get through this.”

“I trust my inner wisdom to guide me to a better situation.”

If it’s tough for you to do this, try to channel your “Inner Lynn.” Remember me? I’m the pathologically positive one!

What things do you say to yourself when times are tough? I’d love to hear your affirmations or positive statements.

Are You Scared to Make a Change?

Your Intuition Can Help!

Did you know it’s actually normal to feel nervous and anxious before you make a big life change? You’re in very good company. “I’m so scared to make a change!” is one of the most frequent statements I hear from clients. Fear is a constant companion for most of us when we’re going through a challenging time. It seems virtually impossible to stop the “what ifs” in our head once they start their drumbeat. “What if I lose my job?” “What if I can’t care for my child?” “What if I can’t make my rent or mortgage?” It may be normal to be scared but taken to an extreme it will leave you paralyzed and unable to act to change your situation.

It’s difficult to make positive choices to steer yourself in a new direction if fear is gripping the wheel. I love the guidance about fear that author Sophy Burnham received from her intuition. She shares it in her book, The Path of Prayer. It’s brilliant! I re-read it every time I feel scared. “Don’t fret,” said the voice. “You have nothing to worry about! Just relax and let things come along in their proper time. Let Quiet, Peace, and Harmony rule, and avoid stressful situations. Let them be born, live and straighten out pleasantly, not with fretting or urgency but by simply accepting the fact — it will work out if you let yourself be led instead of trying to force matters. All is well and remains well.” Isn’t that incredibly comforting?

Take it a Step at a Time

One of the best ways to find the answer is to take a small step towards what your intuition prompts you to do. How do you feel as you proceed? What are the results you’re getting? If you continue to feel positive and your actions produce well-being and harmony, then you’re on the right track. Keep going! If on the other hand you feel depressed, blocked, lacking in energy and you’re getting a negative response to your actions, it’s time to slow down, stop and reevaluate.

When you follow your inner guidance, coincidences and synchronicities begin to occur. Doors will open and opportunities will come your way. You’ll find that as you feel your way along the path of following your intuition, more steps will be presented to you.

Build Your Intuitive Abilities

Learning to trust your intuition is like practicing any new skill or talent. Usually you feel uncertain and insecure. “Am I doing it right?” is often the major question. Here are some simple steps to build your faith in your intuitive guidance as a source of information you can count on to create a life you love.

When you’re faced with a decision, find a time and place where you can be still and listen for guidance. Have a pen and paper on hand. Review your concern in your mind. You might want to write a few paragraphs to clarify the issue.

Clear your mind as best you can. Some people do this by watching their breath flow in and out, others by focusing on a candle or listening to relaxing music. Find a way that works best for you.

Ask Good Questions

Ask your inner guidance for information about the best choice. Open-ended questions are most helpful. Here are some examples: “What’s the best choice for my work at this time?” “How can I help my daughter?” “How can I increase my prosperity?” “What can I do to feel happier?”

Listen carefully. Don’t edit what you receive. Intuition may come in a flash of insight, words, a fleeting or symbolic impression, an emotion, or even a body sensation. Some people report that they suddenly “just know” the answer. Others say the answer comes to them later in the day when they least expect it.

Write the information in your journal. Evaluate it. If you’ve received accurate intuition it should feel right to you. You will experience a pull to action that your guidance creates. The information will make you feel peaceful or calm, not agitated or upset.

Take some steps in the direction your intuition indicates. This need not require a huge leap of faith or a big change in your life. Test the information and see what the results are. If you receive positive results and you continue to feel good, take some more steps.

Evaluate your process. Each time you receive accurate information, act on it and create a positive outcome. You’re building “intuitive muscle.” You’re creating a strong channel for Divine wisdom to flow to you easily and effortlessly whenever you need it.

Are You Going Through a Tough Time?

How to Find Peace During Times of Crisis

I’m hearing from so many clients who are going through a difficult life transition. In the past week I spoke with a woman whose mom just died. Another client lost her job unexpectedly. A man told me how his wife’s illness had wiped out most of the retirement savings.

Several years ago I wrote a book entitled “LISTEN: Trusting Your Inner Voice in Times of Crisis.” I interviewed many people who had experienced a crisis in their lives. They shared their stories and their wise advice about what helped them get through a difficult time. I’m sharing some of this advice with you and hope that you too will find some peace in their counsel. Here are 19 ways to find calm in the midst of crisis.

Be extra kind to yourself. If you’re going through a crisis, it isn’t the time to beat yourself up or get down on yourself for some perceived failing. Simply do the best you can every day. Trust that things will get better.
When you begin to feel overwhelmed, simply stop. Wherever you are, take a few slow deep breaths. It will help you feel calmer and realign your spirit.
It’s okay to cry. It’s even better to cry with Hugs and a reassuring presence make you feel less alone.
Find time to go within everyday. Your faith may be in God, Goddesses, angels, Buddha, guides, Jesus, Divine Consciousness or simply yourself. Seek the still, quiet within to connect with Wisdom.
Take time to help others. Research shows that volunteering is helpful in healing depression, fear and anxiety. Often the one being helped the most is you!
Go slow. Rest. Take it easy. Build downtime into each day. Your body and soul need time to heal. The precious buds of miracles often take root in the fertile soil of sleep, rest and healthy food.
Keep your focus on the good things. You may still be coping with fear and loss. These things do not need to define your life. Joy, pleasure and happiness can, and often do, co-exist with pain.
Take the first step in faith. The power of the Universe will be there to support all future steps. You will be led in grace on the right path.
Check in daily with your intuition. Asking “what” questions is key. “What’s my next step?” “What would make me feel better now?”
Look for the good. Know that life is always changing and that things can and will get better.
Keep your focus on the present moment. “In this moment, I am okay.” When you’re ready, expand that into hours, then days, then weeks.
You can’t figure everything out by yourself. You need to connect, be in community, step out of your comfort zone and create new pathways for possibilities.
If you don’t know where you’re headed, simply say, “Let me be open to new possibilities.”
If you can remain peaceful within, the outside circumstances hold less power over you.
Sometimes the message to take it “one day at a time” is too much. Give yourself permission to cry, rant and rave. If you can only take it a minute or an hour at a time, that’s fine, too. Just keep loving yourself. You’ll get through to the other side.
If you’re faced with an emergency, sit down, center yourself and pray. Ask for guidance. Receive it. Hear it. Act on it.

Got a Big Decision to Make?

First, ask yourself these three questions.

You’ve got a big decision to make. How do you know you’re making the right choice? It’s tough, isn’t it? Your mind can play tricks on you. “What if this doesn’t turn out well?” “What if I’m not good enough?” “Should I just stay where I am and suck it up?” Those types of questions just keep you stuck! Here’s where your wonderful inner guidance can step in to help.

The three questions you need to ask yourself that will guide you to success.

Do I Feel Excited About This?

Intuition gives you feedback through how you feel. Are you excited? Curious? Interested? Want to learn more? That’s your intuitive clue for either saying “yes” to this choice, or at least moving ahead to get more information. The opposite is true, too. Contemplate the decision du jour in your mind. Do you feel drained? Bored? Want to go home and crawl under your covers? That’s your intuition saying move away from this choice. If it’s a “yes”, you’ll feel more energized. Go in the direction that lights you up. If you’re not getting an obvious “Yes” or “No”, do some more research. Take some next steps. Move in the direction that feels better. It may simply be the case that more information is needed.

Do I Feel Scared About This Decision?

I may surprise you here. Scared is often good. A certain amount of anxiety is perfectly normal. Intuition will lead you out of your comfort zone. That’s why a lot of people don’t like to trust it. Think back to any big decision you made. It’s likely you felt at least a little nervous or anxious about it. A choice to take a new job or to make a geographic move can illustrate this point. It’s common to feel uncertain and to think “Can I do it?” “Will it work out?” We ALL feel that way when faced with something new. I’d be willing to bet that in most cases, you felt good about your decision despite the initial butterflies. If you’re saying to yourself, “I wish I had the confidence to do this thing,” do it anyway! Courage and confidence appear when you do the thing you’re scared to do.

What’s My Body’s Response to This Choice?

Think about the choice you’re facing. Try a decision on for size. For example, say it’s a job offer. Say to yourself “I’m going to take this position.” How does your body respond? My body will let me know this is the right option by flooding me with a sense of relief, peace or a feeling of expansion. I may feel a flutter of anxiety, (see above) but I know that’s normal. If I’m not supposed to move forward on this decision, I’ll feel shut down. My shoulders will sag and I’ll feel a heaviness descend on me. It’s like someone pulled the plug on my batteries. Each of us is going to have a slightly different “yes” or “no” response from our body. Practice with some low risk decisions for a few weeks and try it out. Intuition is like any skill. The more you practice, the better you get.
