The Power of Affirmative Prayer

“Please, God! I’m lonely. Send me my soul mate!” “God! I need money. Help me win the lottery!” Have you ever prayed that way? It’s like we’re trying to convince God that we’re worthy and deserving and if we just beg enough and in the right way, the blessings we seek will be bestowed on us. What if instead you simply knew that abundance, love, health and a flow of opportunities were your Divine birthright? Last weekend I took a workshop on the topic of Affirmative Prayer at the Unity Church in Hyannis, MA (Cape Cod.) I’d love to share some of the powerful ideas and techniques I learned.

Let’s start with a definition of affirmative prayer. It’s based on the metaphysical idea that our thoughts and feelings create our reality. In this form of prayer, you’re focused on the positive outcome you seek rather than the scary or negative situation you may be facing. It relates to the statement from Jesus in Mark 11:24. “So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

A traditional prayer may sound something like “I’m desperate for work and money. Please send a job.” In contrast, an affirmative prayer assumes that the Universe/God has our back. We are supported and loved and are encouraged to feel the reality of that wisdom, love, and knowledge. You might say something like…

“I step into the flow of infinite abundance. Blessings come to me from every direction in both expected and unexpected ways. Wonderful things happen to me. I open my heart and mind to receive all that life has to offer.”

Try saying it out loud or recording it for playback. Don’t you feel great when you hear it?! What I love about this form of prayer is that it puts you in touch with Divine guidance. It’s almost as if you can feel that inner wisdom whispering encouragement to you through that still, quiet inner voice. In fact, that’s often how the prayers are answered. You feel an intuitive nudge to make a phone call, attend a workshop, listen to a podcast or apply for a certain job. When you pay attention to that wisdom and take action, your answered prayer becomes your reality.

Need some more affirmative prayer ideas? Here are a few from the Unity.org prayer site:

“God is the illuminating presence lighting my way. I am assured of right guidance whether the path before me is winding or straight, clear or uncertain. I am filled with joy and confidence. I know that I am being led in ways that will bring forth my highest good. I hold this truth in my heart as I pray in the Silence …”

“Attuned to divine light, I release any concern or question to Spirit within. With this light as my guide, I am ready to walk a new course. I have faith in my divine intuition to direct me on the path of peace and fulfillment. I pray in the Silence, fearless and free …”

Share Some Kindness Today

You have only to click on a news channel or glance at a newspaper to believe the world has turned into one hot, angry and hateful mess. Terrorism, bombings, poverty, refugee camps, and shootings. Most of the time I want to bury my head under the covers. I don’t know about you, but I’ve found myself feeling a bit hopeless about it all…until about a month ago.

It was at that time that my husband, Gary, received a serious medical diagnosis. All of a sudden, kindness, love and compassion came raining down upon us. It was then that I realized that it’s in those small (and large) gestures that we can transform the world to include and embrace love as the norm. We each can play a powerful role in turning fear into peace and compassion.

Do you need some examples? Here are some of the things that friends, neighbors, and family have done to help. I’m writing this, in part, to say thank you, but also to help others reading this to see that those seemingly small gestures can have a huge impact.

A neighbor texted me every morning with a one-liner upbeat message. “Thinking of you!” “In my prayers.” Or simply, “The sun is out.” “Blessed!” It was simply nice knowing we were in someone’s thoughts. Another neighbor texted me with “I’m here if you need a hug!”
Cards appeared. They line my counter top and desk and remind me of love and caring.
Several people got in touch and offered medical referrals, help with driving to doctor appointments, or coffee dates with a sympathetic ear.
A neighbor showed up with a big bunch of sunflowers.
A friend arrived with a yummy dinner, a bottle of wine and some coconut macaroons (my favorite.)
A relatively new friend called frequently to simply check in, and offered to just listen if I needed to vent.
One person suggested that this was a time to also be kind to me. What could I do to show myself compassion and also take the time to listen within? (Yes…even I need to be reminded to practice what I preach!)
Did you know that you can actually send Grandma’s Chicken Soup via FedEx?

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive or complete list. It’s simply meant to tell you that you do make a difference and that the humble gestures of a smile, a hug, a call, text or an unpretentious meal can make a huge difference in shifting the world towards love.

And PS…at the moment all is well with Gary. Thank God for good doctors and medications and the above-mentioned friends. Not sure what the future holds, but for now I remain grateful and hopeful.

Are You in a Transition? Try These Helpful Tips!

It’s Okay to Be in a Transition

Several years ago when I was going through a particularly tough time, a friend shared her helpful theory. She said, “when everything is falling apart something new is about to breakthrough.” I’ve always remembered that and taken it to heart. It’s easy to get stuck in a quagmire of thinking that makes you fear that you’ll be trapped in this awful situation forever. Things change. Life changes. It usually gets better if we can allow our intuition to guide us. In the meantime, it helps to believe that we’ll get through this and emerge on the other side feeling better, more hopeful and with a deeper wisdom.

What Would Be Fun?

When you’re in a big life transition life often feels dreary and heavy. Your thinking may simply revolve around “what should I do to get out of this rut?” and you come up with a rehash of old options as a response. All the answers probably seem too difficult to achieve or require more effort and energy than you presently have available. Your first task is to get the energy moving in your life again. You want to get out of the emotional state that’s keeping you where you are. One of the best ways to achieve this is doing things that are enjoyable. What’s fun for you? This doesn’t need to be a long vacation (although it could be!) Most people find their energy shifts by doing simple things; reading a good book, doing something creative, listening to music, going to a fair, sitting by the beach, planning a get together with friends, taking a class or meeting new people. Begin now to plan something fun on a more regular basis.

What Are You Yearning For?

When you’re in a transition you may also be unclear about your future goals. It feels a lot easier to take actionable next steps when your intention is well-defined. What if it’s not? How do you move forward? Here’s a clue — what are you yearning for? Close your eyes. Put your hand over your heart. Take a deep breath and ask yourself that question. The answer may surprise you and provide some helpful next steps. People often report emotion-based words such as “ease,” “nature,” “adventure,” or “rest.” What words (or images) come to you? Once you have that information, open your eyes. What action steps could you take based on your answers? This is your intuition giving you a homework assignment. It may not be the ultimate guide to getting you unstuck but it’s the beginning of a roadmap. It’s the clues leading you out of where you are to where you want to be.

30 Minutes Could Change Your Life!

We all have an inborn guidance system that provides clear and accurate direction to create a successful and happy life. However, there are time we we need the “extra” insight from a gifted intuitive (that’s me!) to help us on our path.

Do You:

Have a big dream and need guidance to manifest it?
Have questions about the right next steps for your business or life?
Have questions about the future while going through a big life transition (divorce, illness, job loss, etc.)?
Feel stuck and need help getting out of your rut?
Need some fresh insight about a relationship or situation?
Seek spiritual direction about your calling and purpose?
Need some intuitive/creative ideas about marketing your business?

Need A Sign? Ask Lynn!

Did you know that you don’t have to be an intuitive to receive guidance from the universe? It comes in many forms and it’s all around us, but you will need to pay attention to the clues. If you are not receiving the signals you need to manifest your intuition, you can also ask the universe for signs to show you the way. Here’s a great question recently submitted by a reader of my “Ask Lynn” column and one of favorite examples about how “The Hand of God” showed up in my life.

QUESTION:

I know that intuition is mostly a “gut” feeling, an inner voice, an unexplained “knowing”, etc. Could you please address the part that outer experiences play in this? I’m talking about signs, coincidences, synchronicities, parallelisms, symbols, dreams, etc. How much importance should one place on tangible occurrences like this, versus just being led by the inner self? — Debi E.

ANSWER:

Dear Debi,

Great question! I’m a big believer in paying attention to signs, coincidences and synchronicities. It is definitely one of the ways the Universe guides us. I call them “God nudges.” If I’m confused about something and need direction, I ask God for an unmistakable sign about the right decision or direction to take.

I’d love to share one of my favorite examples about how “The Hand of God” showed up in my own life.

Many of you know me for my book, “Divine Intuition.” It was originally published in 2000. It became a classic in the field of intuition and has been published in more than a dozen languages.

About ten years after it came out, the publisher sent me a letter saying they would no longer be publishing the book. It was a full-color, illustrated book and had become too costly to print.

I have to interject here to tell you that I’m a very calm, cool and collected person. I usually don’t get overly dramatic or upset about things. I can see good in most everything. In fact, I’m so optimistic that a friend, (who was a little annoyed with me at the time,) labeled me “Pathologically Positive!” I assume that if a life difficulty emerges, it’s simply opening the way for something better to come along.

However, I confess that when I received the note from the publisher, I was devastated. Now, without going into all the details, let’s just say when I heard the news I had a meltdown. I cried and yelled at God about how unfair this was, how many people had written to me and loved the book and how betrayed and abandoned I felt.

The next day I was still upset and crying. I felt so strongly that this book was supposed to be in print. I didn’t know what to do. So I asked God for a sign. I was expecting an unusual butterfly or bird to show up, a song on the radio, or some words on a billboard… you know, the usual kind of “sign from God” thing.

All day long nothing out of the ordinary happens. However, every time I felt discouraged, I just kept repeating, “God, I want to know that Your hand is on my life.”

By the evening, nothing had happened. No sign from God. At this point, my husband decided that the only thing that was going to make me feel better was a good, old-fashioned, hot fudge sundae. So off we went to the local Dairy Queen, where the following image showed up as part of the topping.

I took this as a “sweet” sign that all was well and that I needed to simply trust the process. God’s hand was indeed on my life and on this book.

That “sign” came true. Within several months I had a new publisher, Jossey-Bass. They bought the rights to Divine Intuition! I worked long and hard on revising and updating the book. That version came out in 2015.

So ask for a sign! Pay attention to all the many coincidences, “accidents,” synchronicities and miracles that occur in your life. The unseen world is at work helping you know you’re not alone.

P.S. Haven’t read Divine Intuition yet? My intuition tells me you’d enjoy it!

Master the Art of Letting Go with My Secret Surrender Box Technique

Intuition is Connected to Universal Wisdom

As human beings, we are wired for wisdom and guidance from Universal Wisdom (God, our Higher Power, All-That-Is, Eternal Loving Presence) This Wisdom is the force behind the tulips growing in the Spring, the leaves falling from the trees in the Autumn, the beautiful sunsets and sunrises and the brilliant creation of our bodies. It seemed to me that if I could tune in and surrender to that Wisdom, all would be well.

When we learn how to listen to our intuition we will hear this Wisdom. It will show us the next step to take. We don’t have to be concerned with all the minutiae about how to reach our goals and visions. We only need to be concerned about listening for the next steps.

What Does Letting Go Actually Mean?

You have probably read the words, “let go and let God” many times. And you’ve probably asked yourself, what is this surrender stuff all about? Does it mean that you have no role or any responsibility for action in this process? Letting it go to God always sounded so passive to me. It used to scare me more than help me. I thought of it as giving up on what I wanted. But it’s not that at all.

To trust in God is to believe that there is a friendly, abundant, loving, wise energy in the Universe that supports you and wants what’s best for you. It guides you to your highest good. When you let your fears, concerns, wishes, prayers “go to God,” it means that you trust and work with this energy that powers the universe. The Universe will work with you through your own built-in guidance system to help draw to you your greatest good.

I don’t know about you, but I’m most comfortable when I’m taking action. It provides me with an illusion of control! The concept of seeming to do nothing except “let go to God” has been a tough one to get my head around! Here’s the technique I use when I’ve been struggling with an issue with no results. I call it the…

Surrender Box

Write out your worry or concern on a piece of paper. Here’s an example: “Dear Universe – I’m struggling with not having enough money right now. I’m worried that I can’t pay my rent next month. I believe that you want me, and each one of us, to be prosperous, safe and successful. I am surrendering this concern to you and ask for divine guidance to bring about a positive result.”

Summarize your concern with a statement. “Please guide me to prosperity and abundance.”

Close your eyes and go to a place of peace inside you. Take a few slow deep breaths until you feel your energy begin to shift. Imagine that this Eternal Loving Presence is with you and wants to help. Feel yourself being filled and surrounded by incredible love, light and wisdom.

Repeat the concern that you’ve written on the card. Make your statement/request. Listen for any words, feelings, images or sudden insights. Maintain a respectful silence, allowing any wisdom to come into your consciousness. Sometimes a new option will emerge out of the quiet. When you feel ready, imagine placing this concern in a bubble of light. See it being released into the universe. Know that you will receive further information to help you resolve this issue. It may not come to you during the time of your meditation.

Place your piece of paper in a box and place it on a shelf where you will see it frequently I have my box decorated with the words “Surrender” on it. When you find yourself beginning to worry about this issue at any point in the day or night, remind yourself that you have let go of this concern and that you will receive guidance to resolve the problem.

As you listen for guidance on a daily basis you’ll find yourself being given one step at a time. The answer may come through an inspired idea, a dream, a fleeting insight for new directions. When you consistently look within, asking “What is the right course of action?” or “What path should I take?” you will be rewarded with wise divine guidance. It will always be there gracing your steps through life. You will find that your fear begins to drop away and you’ll move forward with confidence in all your endeavors.

Go with what your inner guidance directs you to do. Sometimes this takes faith and courage. Begin with small steps. As you continue to trust this insight, you will come to understand that your life is on purpose and your mission is unfolding. There truly is Invisible Intelligence leading and guiding you to a more peaceful and harmonious life.

Looking for a New Direction? Ask Your Intuition!

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Something almost magical begins to occur when you make a major decision. A powerful energy is released from you into the Universe. You bring together your belief in your self, your goals, your intuitions, your hopes and dreams into one big cosmic intention. It’s as if you’ve said to the Universe, “This is what I want in my life. Help me make it happen!”

You CAN Get There From Here

The Universe has a remarkable way of helping you achieve whatever your thoughts and intentions are focused upon. Think of it as an invisible source of power, wisdom and knowledge that is readily available to help you create your heart’s desire.

I am an impatient person. I don’t like that I am, and I try to work on this aspect of myself constantly. I remind myself to slow down, to enjoy my life in the moment and to experience gratefulness for all that I have. I have to confess that I don’t always succeed. For example, my previous book, Divine Intuition: Your Guide to a Life You Love, had been in the bookstores only two weeks when I asked my assistant, “Why isn’t it a bestseller yet!?” (I was only half kidding.)

I know I’m not alone in this experience of restlessness. I hear it from my intuitive reading clients all the time. “I’ve tried affirmations, visualizations and listening to my intuition. It doesn’t work! Why don’t I have what I want yet?” You may wonder if you’re doing something wrong, but despite what many self-help books imply, most of us don’t sail effortlessly from one successful achievement to another.

A Divine Intelligence is at Work in Your Life

The Universe knows exactly what you need in order to grow into the next experience you want to create. Susan Jeffers writes in End the Struggle and Dance With Life, “When we are spiritually evolving, we are in a better place to handle whatever life hands us.” She adds, “We all want quick and easy, but when it comes to becoming a spiritual being, speed doesn’t work.”

I’ve had many experiences in my life that felt like failures. At the time it was hard to imagine I was anywhere near to achieving the goals I so desperately wanted. Yet, when I look back at those situations I can see that the Universe had arranged those detours to help me grow into my vision.

You Are Being Prepared for a Life Change

While it may have appeared to me that nothing was happening, the changes that were taking place in my emotions, thoughts and spiritual growth were profound. It’s as if Divine Intelligence knew exactly what I needed to overcome the limiting beliefs I held about myself and the world.

You may think your goal is to get that promotion, to find your life partner or to write a best-selling book. However, the Universe uses your desires to help you learn about love, forgiveness, kindness, community, wisdom and patience along the way. Trust and faith are the qualities to focus on while the forces of Universal wisdom do their work.

Visualization + Intuition + Action = Success

Ask yourself, “What would be the most perfect outcome to this situation” or more simply, “What do I want?”

Write a paragraph or so about what you want. Don’t try to figure out how you’re going to get it. That’s for your intuition to work out.

Close your eyes. Briefly bring to mind the situation that’s causing your frustration.

Now bring to mind the outcome that you want. Spend a few moments visualizing this perfect outcome. What feeling would you be experiencing if you got what you want? As you visualize this image, feel those emotions. Add some words to your imagery. Use whatever works for you. “This is great.” “I feel terrific!” Imagine your friends and family celebrating with you. Do whatever you can to make this image real and vivid.

Ask your intuition, “Is there anything I could do right now that would make this happen?” Await a response. Open your eyes when you feel ready. Jot down any ideas, thoughts and impressions you may have had.

Don’t take action simply on what you think makes sense. Act only on impulses that feel like fun, make you excited, or seem enjoyable to you. Your intuition will begin to bring together the circumstances and synchronicities to create your goal.

We’re all born with the gift of intuition. It’s an inner compass that resides within each of us. Listen to it and honor it. It will always lead you in the direction of success.

Q & A: What If You Don’t Know What to Do?

Q: What if you have several competing interests, and thus really do not know what your passion is? I guess my passion really is with decorating, but also I think I might like to write, have my own business, etc. How do you know which interest you should pursue as a career? — Patti R.

A: Thanks for your question, Patti! Wouldn’t it be great if a big, booming voice from above would clearly announce the best path to follow in life? Well, there is a voice. It just speaks a little softer. It’s called intuition.

You’re obviously listening to it because you’re easily able to identify your passion(s.) Who says there needs to be just one?  Why not pursue them all?!  In your case, why not start a decorating business? You can write articles about the topic as a way to both inform people and attract clients.

Someone once said that too many people quit just a step away from achieving success. Here’s a plan to accomplish your goals while you work in harmony with your intuition.

Focus on the goal. When you think of an ideal day, week, month or year, what are you doing with your life?

Develop a plan. What are the small steps you can begin to take that will lead you in the direction you want to go? “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” Take that first step, and then take another.

If you get off track, be willing to change.  What are you doing that’s on the mark? If one way doesn’t work for you, be ready to go another.  Many times, the road to success is found by taking a detour.

Cultivate the attitude of a wish fulfilled. Success is waiting for you — feel it, see it, vividly imagine it, sense it, and grasp it.

Don’t dwell on the old.  Put your mental energy and action into focusing on where you want to go.

Look ahead, rather than back.  Ask yourself, “How will I view this circumstance six months or a year from now?”  Put your focus on what you have the power to change rather than dwelling on an apparent failure.

How will you know when you’re succeeding? Success isn’t a destination. It’s a journey.  Here’s a checklist:

Are you enjoying what you do?
Are your connections with friends, colleagues and family strengthened by your success?
Are you proud of your accomplishments thus far?
In the process of achieving your goals are you developing the qualities of kindness, self-respect, courage, compassion, patience, love and hope?
Do you feel more in control of yourself and your life?
Are you able to shift negative self-talk to something more positive and useful?
Has your spiritual life been enriched through the process of achieving this goal?
Are you being of service to others?
Are you more self-confident and sure of your capabilities as the result of pursuing this dream?
Are you continuing to stretch just beyond your comfort zone?
Are you easily able to shift direction if the course you’ve been on isn’t working?
Are you consistently listening to your inner guidance and following its wisdom?
If you answered yes to most or all of these questions, you are a success!

When you’ve put a lot of hard work into an endeavor and it’s not going as you planned, it’s hard to step back and assess the situation. Is there something that you feel you’re “failing” at in your life?  The following questions will help you put some perspective on your experience.

What can you learn from this?
What are you doing right?
What outcome will make you feel you’re successful?
Where did this begin to go wrong?
What do you wish you had done differently?
What is your intuition telling you to do about this situation?

After answering the above questions, do you feel there’s a different way to approach your project or endeavor?  Depending on the issue, you have several options.  You could:

Quit.
Persevere.
Alter your course.
Put the project on hold for a period of time.
Try something new.
Ask for advice from someone who has been successful in a similar endeavor.
Work on your project part-time.
Discuss the situation with others who may be involved.

Which of these options feels best to you?  You can choose more than one and your intuition may present you with even more choices than listed here.  Trust your gut and good luck with the new business!

Your inner wisdom wants you to be happy. It’s always trying to bring you back into a life of peace, joy and purpose. It’s there as an inner guide to restore balance and bring you back home. Develop it. Listen to it. All of what you want in life also wants you.

Is Your Intuition Blocked? You’ll Love My Fairy Godmother Technique!

Are you getting in the way of your own intuition? I’m hearing from a lot of clients who are experiencing more stress and anxiety than usual. One of the things I’ve noticed is how easy it seems to imagine the worst-case scenario. We get hyper-focused on all the bad, difficult or challenging things that could happen. Do you know that thinking this way prevents your intuition from doing its job?

Your inner wisdom is here to guide you to greater success, happiness and purpose. Following are some techniques that I use when I need to jumpstart my intuition and get moving in a more positive direction.

The next time you’re experiencing any degree of stress, anxiety or depression, begin to shift the conversation in your head towards what you want, not what you don’t want. There are many ways to do this.

The Fairy Godmother Technique

If you had a fairy Godmother who could wave a magic wand over you and grant your wish, what would it be? This may sound silly (and it is) but it may also allow your imagination to take hold long enough to think of a different scenario. If the Godmother idea is too weird for you, imagine you won the lottery. What would the answer be then?

What’s the Opposite?

As stated above, we often get focused on what we DON’T want. I suggest you get a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle of the page. In the left side column write all the things that are bugging you. When you’re finished with that task, ask yourself what’s the opposite? You’ll add these to the column on the right. So, “I never have time for myself” becomes, “I’m experiencing more flexibility and ease in my life.” Another example? “I hate my job” becomes “I want a job where I have more creativity (abundance, fun, respect…)” You get the idea.

What Are You Yearning For?

This is one of my favorite questions to ask myself. Sometimes, “What do I want?” leaves me stuck. I can’t think of anything or I get mired in trying to figure out how I’m going to accomplish it. Asking yourself, “What am I yearning for?” may bring up something intangible. When I’ve asked clients this question, the answers often pour forth with words such as ease, adventure, flexibility, abundance, connection, love, community and creativity.

Where Does Intuition Come In?

Intuition is your “Inner GPS.” When you’re clear about your goals, intentions, or yearnings, your inner wisdom will begin to guide you in the right direction towards those ideas. It communicates through feelings, an inner voice, “aha” moments, dreams, physical sensations (such as gut feelings) and synchronicities.

Here’s a technique to try:

Write a paragraph or so about what you want. I like to write it in the present tense as if I already have this goal or desire. Don’t try to figure out how you’re going to get it. That’s for your intuition to work out.

Close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths.

When you feel ready, ask your intuition, “What could I do today that would move me in the right direction?” Await a response.

Open your eyes when you feel ready.

Additional thoughts…

Jot down any ideas, thoughts and impressions you may have had. Keep it brief.
Don’t take action simply on what you think makes sense. Act only on impulses that feel like fun, make you excited, or seem enjoyable to you. That’s your intuition speaking!
You may receive information later in the day. Inner guidance loves to arrive when you least expect it…when you’re blow-drying your hair, taking a shower, walking the dog or doing the dishes!
As you go about your day, notice any ideas that seem to simply pop into your head. Pay attention to these, especially if they give you a sense of relief or peace. Jot them down so you can act on them later.
Also notice if you’re given the answer or next step in some other way. You may overhear a conversation, get drawn to an article or book, or have a website pop up that gives you some needed insight.

Your inner wisdom wants you to be happy. It’s always trying to bring you back into a life of peace, joy and purpose. It’s there as an inner guide to restore balance and bring you back home. Develop it. Listen to it. All of what you want in life also wants you.

What To Do When Your Intuition Seems Silent?

We all have those times when we just don’t know what to do. You’re rolling along in life and all seems good when out of the blue something unexpected happens. It might be an illness, an accident, or you got laid off at work. Most of us try to rely on our intuition and figure out the next steps. However, what do you do when your intuition seems silent and no answers arrive?

I had that happen to me several years ago. One of my books, Listen: Trusting Your Inner Voice in Times of Crisis, had just been published. I was out on the lecture circuit and giving seminars, scheduling lots of radio shows and interviews, traveling a great deal. It probably sounds exciting, but to be honest, I was exhausted.

I remember praying to God to bring peace back into my life. I wasn’t sleeping. I wasn’t eating well. I felt awful. What did I hear back? Nothing. Silence. I felt like I was in a dead zone. This was particularly painful to me because my book was all about paying attention to inner guidance and I wasn’t hearing any! All I knew was that I needed to rest.

It would be great if intuition spoke to us in a clear, direct manner. “Hey Lynn! I know you’re struggling in your life. Here’s the answer…” Followed, of course, with detailed instructions about what you should and shouldn’t do in order to be successful. In the bible, God spoke to Moses from a burning bush. (I don’t know about you, but if a burning bush started yelling at me I’d definitely run in the other direction!) But truthfully, don’t you long for this kind of guidance when you need direction?

I know that in my life during that dark period, I had no down time. I was ON all the time. All my energy just seemed to go out to other people — talking, helping, counseling, teaching. I wasn’t taking time for myself. There wasn’t any room in my psyche for spirit to reach me.

What I finally realized was there was a mantra of sorts going through my mind at all times. It wasn’t your typical “Om” kind of mantra. It was “I NEED TO SLOW DOWN!” I suddenly realized I was missing my intuition communicating with me because I was drowning out this inner wisdom out with activity. I got so involved in my book promotion and other work that the guidance simply was lost in the crowd. It wasn’t until I really took some time to rest, to focus on myself, to be in nature, to sleep, that I felt the reassuring presence of my intuition again.

Following are some things that I found helpful during my “intuition is silent” period.
Rest, Sleep, Dream and Recover

Intuition often seems to go away during those times of our lives when we most need guidance. It may be because we’re so exhausted we’re not taking time to listen. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do to feel better today? ” Whatever answer comes to you, do it. Answers I’ve received include, “Take a break and sit outside in the sun for awhile.” “Take a walk in the woods.” “Put your head on the pillow and rest.” “Read a comforting book.” “It’s time to turn the computer off.” Know in your heart these times of “silence” don’t last forever.

Talk and Listen

If you are waiting through a time of silence ask your inner guidance these questions:

Is there something that needs my attention?
Is there something I’m unaware of that I need to resolve?
What does my inner wisdom want me to learn?
Am I being prepared for something?

I realize that you’re reading this article because you’re concerned about the radio silence from your intuition, so you’re probably not having immediate answers popping into your mind. Try a journal. Write out any responses that come to you. Perhaps simply think of someone you love and who loves you, and they’re giving you kind and loving wisdom and advice.

What You Say to Yourself Matters

You may be telling yourself that you’re doing something wrong, you’re not good enough or you’re being punished. My guess is that none of those things are true. Try one or more of the following statements while you’re going through this difficult period.

My intuition has guided me in the past and continues to do so.
There are many ways to hear guidance. I am open to wisdom in all forms.
I am provided with all that I need with comfort and ease, even in the silence.

Find Pockets of Quietude

In our culture we believe that doing, taking action, and making the effort are the most important ways to get out of a crisis. What if the opposite is true? What if you give yourself permission to simply be, and rest in order to find peace and solutions to your current confusion? Learning to listen requires two things: a practice that facilitates quieting the mind, such as meditation, prayer, or communing with nature; and an understanding or discovery of how you receive the answers.

Listen for Intuition in New Ways

You may be expecting inner guidance to show up in a big and theatrical way — a flash of lightning, a dramatic rescue, a big booming voice from the heavens. Sometimes that happens. More often it’s through words of wisdom from other people, a TV show or a book. The answers may be revealed through nature, or a gentle smile from a stranger walking our way. Often it shows up as a fleeting moment of peace and tranquility in the midst of a difficult day. Sometimes it’s simply a word or two to give us a new direction to follow.

My best advice regarding a silent intuition is, keep praying, keep writing, keep reading, keep walking the path before you. Keep doing the things that have worked in the past (and will work again in the future). Know that we’ve all gone through these times of silence. Ultimately, this too shall pass. In the meantime, “be still and know” that the wisdom within is there guiding you always. Everything will work out okay.

How to Listen to Your Inner Millionaire: 7 Tips to Creating the Life of Your Dreams

What do Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Stephen King all have in common? The answer is: They trust their intuition! Each one of these people credits this powerful inner resource, in part, to their personal and professional success.

Webster’s defines intuition as “quick and ready insight.” We’re all born with this inner knowing and when we listen to it and act on what it tells us we’re guided unfailingly towards our hopes and dreams. It’s as if we have an inner compass that points us to success and abundance.

Here are seven tips to help you use your intuition to create the life of your dreams.

Stop, Ask and Then Listen

Intuitive information reveals itself more easily when you learn to quiet your mind through meditation or by simply sitting quietly and listening to some relaxing music. Ask your intuition questions such as, “How can I bring more money into my life?” or “What career could I choose that will be both fun and financially rewarding?” Intuition reveals itself in a variety of ways. There’s no one right way to receive its wisdom. It may come in the form of a hunch, a gut feeling, an inner voice, an image, an “aha” moment or in a dream.

Be Clear About What You Want to Create

It’s been said that if you don’t know where you’re going any path will take you there. What are your goals, your dreams and passions? Spend some time writing about them in a journal. Draw, paint or cut out pictures from magazines that describe what you want your ideal life to look like. What would an ideal day, month or year look like to you? Dare to think big! When you’re clear about what you want, your intuition will begin to give you messages about how to achieve your dreams. What would you do if you were to unexpectedly receive one million dollars with the stipulation that you spend it on creating work you love? What would you do if you were to receive so much that you could do whatever you chose to do for the rest of your life and not have to worry about money? The answers to these questions are a strong message from your intuition about your life purpose. With the understanding that this money isn’t in your life right now, what steps could you take to begin to live the life you dream?

Your Thoughts Have Power!

Keep your focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Research has shown that financially successful people tend to be optimistic. Their inner dialog reveals that they expect things to work out in their favor. Imagine two people. Woman #1 holds these predominate thoughts in her mind, “I’m a failure. I’m broke all the time. I’ll never get ahead.” Woman #2 thinks, “I’m a good person and I deserve abundance. Things have a way of working out for me.” Who would have your vote as “most likely to succeed?” Intuition can reveal itself more easily to people like woman #2 whose mind is open to its guidance.

Educate Yourself About Money and Investments

An important part of creating abundance is planning for your success. While the world of financial information may seem overwhelming at first, start small. Learn about your company’s retirement plan and begin to make regular contributions. Take a class in financial planning. Read a beginner’s guide to personal finance or subscribe to one of the many good magazines on the subject. Do something every week to learn about money, begin to save and invest and soon your financial nest egg will be growing along with your confidence.

What’s Working?

If you concentrate on finding whatever is good in every situation, you will discover that your life will begin to be filled with abundance. What is in your life right now that you feel grateful for? Your intuition will constantly provide you with information about how to create a life you love when you begin to focus on appreciation. It will give you nudges, hints, impulses, feelings, hunches and dreams, to move you in the right direction. If you’re constantly stressed and always wishing for more time, money, freedom, energy — fill in the blank — you need to create some time for “sacred idleness.” All those signs of stress are signals from your intuition that it’s time to slow down… take a comfort break… give yourself a few hours or days off to reflect on your life. What do you truly want? What fills your soul? What can you let go of? What are the blessings in your life? These are all questions to ask your intuitive guidance system. Listen to the answers, reflect, and take action. Take the time to meditate, write in a journal and dream new dreams. These are all important steps in creating the abundant life you deserve.

Personalize Some “Worry-Free” Statements

Do you labor under the illusion that if you worry enough about money, you’ll ward off debt? Nothing could be further from the truth. Worry, anxiety and fear create more worry, anxiety and fear. They don’t create more money. Here are two techniques that work: If you find you simply can’t ditch the worry habit, try limiting your worry to a five-minute period during a specific time of the day. You might also choose a phrase that you find comforting such as, “Peace, be still.” Or “I am now open and receptive to new avenues of income.” Or “It will all turn out okay.” Say it often when worry thoughts arise.

Use the Power of Your Mind

Close your eyes for a moment and bring to mind an image of what it would look and feel like to have the prosperity you desire. Spend a few moments visualizing this perfect outcome. What emotions would you be feeling if you got what you wanted? As you visualize this image, feel those emotions. Add some words to your imagery. Use whatever works for you. “This is great.” “I feel terrific!” Imagine your friends and family celebrating with you. Do whatever you can to make this image real and vivid. Open your eyes when you feel ready. Now go out into the world and experience the abundance all around you!
