The Dinner Party | Elements of a Beautiful Gathering

The modern dinner party… a novelty. Like receiving a letter in the mail the old fashioned way. It’s rare, but when it occurs it’s so delightful. I’d like to bring the dinner party and in-home entertaining back. Because life is about connection and relationships and belonging…

Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. We are throwing a dinner party tonight and in today’s video I’m sharing some of my tips and tricks with how I manage a dinner party during a busy season of life. Make sure you stay tuned until the end because I have some special guests to introduce you to. But first, let’s start off with the fun part… the flower arrangements.

I usually find my flowers at Trader Joe’s because they are very affordable and have a good selection there. Since we are still in fall, I wanted to bring some creams and yellows into these bouquets before I begin moving into the deep reds of winter. I decided on a special mix of cream roses, white mums, St. John’s wort, and chrysanthemums. I’m making two versions of the same bouquet for the kitchen table, where the kids will eat, and the dining room table, where the adults will be. It takes me a few tries to get the stems the right length, but I am loving this combination. I take some of the leaves off the stems but not all. I find that if I change the water every day, I can get my bouquets to last more than a week this way.

Time to set the table. There will be 8 adults and 11 kids at the party tonight. That’s a lot of people! Because I’m in a very busy season right now and feel a little stressed, I thought I’d make this dinner party as low stress as possible and will order the food in. There’s no shame in that game. People will often not entertain because they can’t do it a certain way… I say the most important thing about the gathering is that you, in fact, gather and connect. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t cooked a meal from scratch. People just like being invited over. Don’t worry about judgement. Sometimes I’m able to cook for everyone, but tonight, with 19 people being here… I outsourced the cooking. But we will get to that later. I’ve decided on Spode Blue Italian for tonight’s dinner as I have enough of that collection for the amount of guests I’m having. I have matched it with my fall plaid napkins and gold rings. We didn’t have enough chairs, so we brought two down from other rooms that are in a similar style. It may seem strange, but I get a definite thrill from setting the table. Why does this bring me so much joy? It’s the little things in life. It’s an artistic pastime for me. I love selecting the plates, napkins, tablecloth, flower arrangements and how they will all go together. Of course, candles are a must. I always think of Hyacinth Bucket and her candlelight suppers! Ha!

I finally purchased some elegant chafing dishes. I’ve wanted these for a while. It’s much more convenient to keep the food warm this way, rather than in the oven.  On the menu tonight is Mediterranean food… one of my favorites. We are having chicken and vegetable kabobs with basmati rice and a Mediterranean salad. Appetizers are falafel, hummus, pita bread, and tzatziki. And, the pièce de résistance is cheesecake with raspberries for dessert.

The dinner party was a success. It was so fun to get together and laugh! Now, I didn’t want to be one of those annoying dinner party hosts who puts a camera in everyone’s face and I want to be conscious about everyone’s privacy, but there are two people I think you should meet! The first one is our friend, Cameron, who has a channel called, The Busy Gardener. The second one is my video editor, Evan…  I thought you’d get a kick out of meeting those two since they are a part of the YouTube world. The dinner went until late, and I didn’t get to bed until midnight. It was so fun. I hope this video inspires you to entertain this season. Thank you for watching. See you next time! Love, Jennifer

Intermittent Fasting Weight Loss | 5 Surprising Observations

I've been following the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting for 20 months now and have noticed some surprising observations. I'm sharing those with you in today's video.

Disclaimer: This video is intended for entertainment purposes only. If you are interested in trying intermittent fasting please consult your doctor first.
The first observation: I am not hungry first thing in the morning. When you begin intermittent fasting, you think you're going to wake up starving since you fasted after dinner and through the night, but I have found the opposite to be true.
The second observation: Long-term intermittent fasting makes you want to eat healthful foods. Because intermittent fasting is about when you eat rather than what you eat, some people think they can eat junk food during their eating window. This might happen some days, but generally, I find that my cravings have altered and now I crave really clean meals.
The third observation: Because you clean up your diet significantly, you might lose more weight than you anticipated losing. This can be good or bad, depending on your unique situation. I have strangely lost a few more pounds this month, going from 116 lbs to 112 lbs without changing anything in my routine (for context, I am 5'5 1/2") My doctor recommend I add more healthy fats back into my diet: nuts, whole eggs, avocados, dark chocolate, fatty fish, etc.
The fourth observation: Your skin might improve. I'm very happy with my skin lately and I am not sure if it is because of intermittent fasting, but my skin is the healthiest it's been my whole life.
The fifth observation: Intermittent fasting might alter your eating habits dramatically. This can be good or bad, depending on your situation. Because I have stopped snacking after dinner, I am no longer able to eat late at night without getting a stomach ache. Occasionally we will go out to dinner or eat a late meal with family and friends and my body lets me know it's unhappy. All these points are worth weighing before you decide to embark on intermittent fasting.

Comment of the WeekAshley writes, "Your meals always look so satisfying. I absolutely love that you give yourself a dessert daily. I also love a sweet treat in the afternoon. I've also implemented eating dinner pretty early (during the 5 PM hour) and I really am not hungry for the rest of the night, but I do go to bed pretty early so that helps."

Planning for the Holidays | Outfits, Decor & More

Let’s plan for the holiday season in this month’s Mega Motivation video because you know what I always say… Being chic is being prepared.

Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. The holidays are upon us. Thanksgiving will be here before we know it and Christmas is right around the corner. I’ve learned over the years that early planning is the best way to enjoy the season because I can finally relax in those late December weeks knowing that everything has been taken care of. I’m using this adorable holiday list book created by my friend Kim, from Free to Family, in combination with my Day Designer planner (CONNOISSEUR10 for 10% off) to make this holiday season an organized one. This video is part of Mega Motivation. I’ll leave the playlist here so you can see how all the other lovely YouTubers are decluttering and planning for the holidays.

Before we begin, let’s put a pineapple apple cider in the slow cooker and then we can enjoy it together at the end of the video: {"image":"https://i.imgur.com/pQuaVX6.jpg"... Ten-Item Wardrobe It may seem strange that we are starting in the wardrobe, but I like to look through my closet and decide on my outfits for the upcoming season. This helps me to not only feel presentable, but festive. And I don’t need to waste time figuring out what to wear. I’ll be retiring this plaid skirt in December, so knowing that, I’ll get good use out of it in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. I’ll be replacing it with this green dress from Lilysilk (Daily15 for 15% off) of which has a gorgeous dark green, emerald color and will be perfect for dressing up and down during the holiday season. I’ll share more about this dress in an upcoming video. It’s getting colder, so I’ll be making sure my tights, sweaters, and boots are in top order. And, of course, that my coats are all ready to go as well.

China and table linensI’ll be switching out the china from Spode Woodland to Spode Christmas Tree. Making sure all the plates are in order and cleaned and ready to go is a big part of the joy in the transition of holidays. I’m also checking out my table linens for Christmas and making sure they are ironed and suitable for use. I have these darling holly tablecloth and matching napkin set that will brighten up the bird room this year.

Decorations and Ornaments Let’s look at holiday décor. You know how much I Iove a theme, so we have Nutcracker-themed stockings and figures. And each year I really enjoy bringing out this one-of-a-kind Kay Burkart Santa that I will treasure forever. Just making sure these decorations are still looking good and deciding on where they will go is a joy.

Books This is a big one for me. I love to compile all the holiday books I’d like to read to the kids and have them handy in one place. In past years, the books have been scattered from the year before and we will go without reading some of the cozy classics we have enjoyed on an annual basis. Some of the best memories of the season involve us reading a cozy book like The Mary Englebreit version of The Night Before Christmas by the Tree with mugs of hot cocoa. As a child, I have great memories of reading this Christmas book each year: Raffi’s Christmas Treasury, that my grandmother gave me. I still have it and read it to my own kids. We adults can’t forget about ourselves. I like to bring out the books I like to enjoy each season too.

Recipe GatheringAnd finally, I’m gathering the recipes I’d like to make this year and stock up on the pantry ingredients, so they are readily available for when I like to begin. This involves me looking at some of my favorite holiday cookbooks and magazines. Victoria Magazine always has such beautifully elegant recipes. I’ll be making some of these this year.

Time to enjoy our festive pineapple apple cider. I take the ladle and strain the cider into cups. During your holiday planning, don’t forget to take time to enjoy the season fully. I hope you enjoyed today’s planning for the holidays video.
May your holiday season be steeped in good cheer.  Keep calm and have an elegant holiday season and I’ll see you in my next video. Love, Jennifer

Comment of the WeekDawn writes, "Thanks for highlighting this topic! Preparedness is so often overlooked and even frowned upon sometimes. We forget how in past years, homes would have larders, pantries, and basements stocked for a full season at a time! I would like to help further explain hoarding vs. preparedness. Hoarding is buying more than you need or can use, resulting in less availability for others in times of need. Preparedness, or a well stocked pantry contains items you regularly use, bought during times of economic stability, slowly built up in quantities over time, and within your budget (often at discount during seasonal sales and in bulk). This reduces strain on the supply chain and sets you up to not needing to “panic buy” and contribute to clearing the store shelves. It brings great peace of mind knowing that you are well prepared and helps the overall community by allowing resources to go to those who need them the most."
Dawn, your comment was so well-written and your observations on hoarding vs. preparedness are spot on. Thank you!
I hope you enjoyed today's Mega Motivation collab. Let us know how you like to plan for the holidays and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week.

Comment of the Week

Toni W. writes, "We often invite foreign students who are studying in the US at a local University to our Thanksgiving dinner. The are often so excited to share our Thanksgiving tradition and we send them each back to their dorm or apartment with our Thanksgiving leftovers. My husband’s father was a college professor and this was the tradition that my husband grew up with. 🥧 🦃"

Toni, I love this. You can be sure that the students will never forget their American Thanksgiving experience!

Bring outside points of triangles up over filling, then tuck under dough to create the ring.Bake 35 minutes or until crust is golden brown. .ccm-wrapper,.ccm-wrapper *{box-sizing: border-box;}.ccm-wrapper h3{margin: 0;}.ccm-show{display: block !important;}.ccm-link{color: #4193f0;}.ccm-wrapper{color: #000;max-width: 620px;position: relative;padding: 20px 20px 0;margin: 20px auto;background: #f2f2f2;border: 6px double #6672E5;}.ccm-name{all: unset;display: block;font-size: 20px !important;font-weight: 700 !important;letter-spacing: 0px !important;}.ccm-info{position: relative;font-size: 14px;margin-bottom: 20px;text-transform: capitalize;}.ccm-author,.ccm-yield{display: inline-block;}.ccm-yield{margin-right: 30px;}.ccm-wrapper img{margin: 0 !important;padding: 0 !important;max-width: 100%;}.ccm-btns-wrapper{position: relative;}#ccm-printbutton{margin: 0;color: #fff;padding: 0 20px;font-size: 14px;border-radius: 3px;cursor: pointer;height: 35px;background: #555;border: 0 !important;outline: 0 !important;display: inline-flex;align-items: center;justify-content: center;}.ccm-print-options{display: none;white-space: nowrap;position: absolute;top: 32px;right: 0;z-index: 2;background: #fff;border: 1px solid #ccc;}.ccm-print-options button{display: block;background: 0 0;border: 0;cursor: pointer;padding: 10px;width: 100%;text-align: left;}.ccm-print-options button:hover{color: #fff;background: #555;}.ccm-head{color: #000;font-size: 20px !important;font-weight: 700 !important;margin: 30px 0 0 !important;text-transform: uppercase !important;}.ccm-section-title{font-weight: 700;font-size: 16px;margin-bottom: 10px;}.ccm-section{padding-left: 20px;line-height: 1.7;margin: 10px 0 30px;}.ccm-section-items{margin: 0 !important;padding: 0 0 0 30px !important;}.ccm-section li{margin: 0 0 6px !important;padding: 0 !important;}.ccm-section-steps li{line-height: 1.6;margin-bottom: 10px !important;}.ccm-posturl{padding: 15px 0;border-top: 1px solid #ccc;}.ccm-posturl a{font-size: 13px;}.ccm-notes{line-height: 1.7;}.ccm-notes-inner{padding-top: 10px;}.ccm-notes p{margin-bottom: 0 !important;}.ccm-copyright{font-size: 13px;font-style: italic;line-height: 1.6;padding: 15px 0;border-top: 1px solid #ccc;}.ccm-credit{font-size: 12px;padding: 10px;text-align: center;background: #fff;margin: 0 -20px !important;border-bottom-left-radius: 10px;border-bottom-right-radius: 10px;border-top: 1px solid rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15);}.ccm-credit a{color: #00f;text-decoration: none;}.ccm-keywords,.ccm-categories,.ccm-cuisine,.ccm-video,.ccm-section>br,.ccm-time br{display: none;}.ccm-summary{text-align: center;margin: 20px 0;line-height: 1.7;font-style: italic;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-wrapper{border:0;border-radius:10px;box-shadow:0 0 10px rgba(0,0,0,.25);}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-image{text-align:center;height:300px;margin:-20px!important;overflow:hidden;border-bottom:3px solid #6672E5;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-image img{width:100%;height:100%;min-height:100%;-o-object-fit:cover;object-fit:cover;-o-object-position:50% 50%;object-position:50% 50%;border-top-left-radius:10px;border-top-right-radius:10px;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-btns-wrapper{text-align:center;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] #ccm-printbutton{border-radius:25px;width:120px;height:40px;font-weight:700;text-transform:uppercase;background:#6672E5;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-print-options{right:calc(50% - 53px);}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-name{text-align:center!important;margin:40px 0 20px!important;text-transform:capitalize;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-info{display:-webkit-box;display:-ms-flexbox;display:flex;-webkit-box-pack:justify;-ms-flex-pack:justify;justify-content:center;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-time{border-right:0;border-left:0;margin:0 -20px;border-top:1px dashed #000;border-bottom:1px dashed #000;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-summary{margin-bottom:25px;}[data-ccmcardnum='1'] .ccm-summary:after{content:'';display:block;width:50px;height:2px;background:#000;margin:auto;margin-top:10px;}var ccmPrintWin = null;function ccmpr(btn) { var id = btn.id; function ccmprNow() { if (ccmPrintWin == null || ccmPrintWin.closed) { ccmPrintWin = window.open("", "printwin"); } else { ccmPrintWin.close(); ccmPrintWin = window.open("", "printwin"); } var d = ccmPrintWin.document; d.querySelector("body").innerHTML = btn.closest(".ccm-card").outerHTML + "<link rel='stylesheet' href='https://common.recipesgenerator.com/p... if (id == "ccm-printWithoutImage") { d.querySelector(".ccm-image").remove(); } var n = d.createElement("style"); n.innerHTML = document.querySelector(".ccm-card-styles").innerHTML; d.querySelector("head").appendChild(n);ccmPrintWin.print();}if(id === "ccm-printbutton"){var po = btn.closest(".ccm-wrapper").querySelector(".ccm-print-options"); po ? The Chic Assignment Check-In October 2021| Corelli x Rilke

Welcome to The Chic Assignment Check-in for October. We are going to learn 5 interesting facts about Corelli, and dive into Rilke's transcendent poetry.

Chic Assignment No. 1 Corelli Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 8

Arcangelo Corelli (1653 - 1713) was an Italian violinist and composer in the Baroque era. We are listening to his concerto grosso op. 6 no. 8 this month. Even though this is known as The Christmas Concerto, it is also wonderful to listen to in autumn. We are learning 5 fun facts about Corelli from the Orchestra from the Age of Enlightenment.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Enjoy the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)
Portrait painting of Rainer Maria Rilke by Leonid Pasternak - public domain

Rilke was an Austrian poet and novelist. You can read his poems for free online at the Poetry Foundation or you can read a book of his collected poems.  Today I'm sharing his biography and a selection of his excellent poetry.

Enchanted Homemaking on an October Evening

 Enchantment  By Jennifer L. Scott
One October Evening, I steal outside to breathe. Release my swirling thoughts, Around my head they wreathe.
Smell the midnight roses, And tinkle the wind chime. Regard the jasmine plant, I’m training it to climb.
Crisp October evenings, I feel enchantment deep. Inspire me again, Infuse my dreams in sleep.

Welcome back to the Daily Connoisseur. We had our first rain of the season today and the flowers returned in gorgeous bloom to celebrate. It’s earlier in the day now and I’m making a creamy tomato tortellini soup for lunch, but first I will lay the table.

These everyday rituals…. I’ve done them a million times. Preparing the table never gets old to me. I like to choose the tablecloth and make it look well-dressed. Today I’d like to compliment the white lilies so I’m going with a cream cloth and the rattan placemats

And now to get started on the soup. I sauté one chopped onion in olive oil in my giant soup pot. I also add a sprig of rosemary to deepen the flavor. Once the onion is softened, I add chicken stock, diced tomatoes, tomato puree, and heavy cream and season this all with salt and pepper. I’m going to let that simmer on low for 20 minutes while I take care of the laundry.

I find that homemaking has so much to do with time management and optimizing every moment you have. It’s a choreographed dance, but once you get into the flow, it is enjoyable. I just can’t forget I’m cooking something on the stove! And now back to the soup. I’m going to chop a large bushel of spinach to add to the soup. Then I add the tortellini and some extra basil and let this cook for 12 more minutes. When it’s finished, I ladle the soup into bowls and top with parmesan cheese. This is being served with a deliciously robust flavored brown bread with Irish butter. Could there be a better fall luncheon?

And now it’s time to put on my gloves. I have an ongoing project to scrub the baseboards. I usually start this time of year so that by Thanksgiving they look shiny and new. I find that using a magic eraser works best on the kitchen base boards, which tend to have grease and grime sticking to them. I soak the magic eraser in water and squeeze it out. If there is a lot of stuck-on grime, I add a bit of dish soap. This is one of those rather unpleasant tasks. Nowhere near as satisfying as laying the table. But I have a treat in store for myself after this, so I carry on scrubbing.

Time to restore my senses to beauty once again. I found these flowers on sale at the grocery store. Technically they were the least desirable ones. But I plan to make an elegant bouquet of them nonetheless. I feel my vase with the eucalyptus first and dot in these beautiful purple flowers. They are called a wavy leaf sea lavender. Scientific name: Limonium sinuatum. This is a great flower for drying. When I used to visit my grandmother in Cambria, I always loved seeing this flower hanging from the rafters of the local shops. But it also lasts a long time in bouquets. I like to challenge myself to buy the flowers on sale and create an expensive looking bouquet. Mission accomplished!

We are headed for the enchanted October evening, but first the kitchen must be put to right. I don’t have kitchen duty every night, it switches between my husband, myself, and the kids, but tonight is my night and I’m going to find the enchantment in it. I find it enjoyable to come downstairs after everyone is in bed, light a candle, and listen to an audiobook while I tidy up. Tonight, I’m listening to the sounds of cleaning and allowing my swirling thoughts to wreathe around my head. October is an enchanting month. The air is different. And the path to winter is now well established.
Crisp October evenings, I feel enchantment deep. Inspire me again, Infuse my dreams in sleep.
Thank you for joining me on The Daily Connoisseur. I hope this inspired you to find the enchantment in your everyday life, even in the most mundane tasks. Keep calm and remain classy and I’ll see you next time.

Eithne writes, "I liked what you said about not wanting to get rid of the laughter lines. Audrey Hepburn was once asked if she would like her wrinkles airbrushed out of a photo. She said ‘don’t you dare. I earned every one of those wrinkles’"

I love that story about Audrey Hepburn. I feel the same way. I've earned each and every laugh line. And they were created in joy!

I hope you enjoyed today's homemaking video. I hope your homemaking is enchanted this month as well. See you on Saturday for The Chic Assignment Check-in.
