Comment of the Week

Anita writes, "I just love the word ‘retired’ as opposed to ‘getting rid of’, or even decluttering. It carries the feeling of something well loved and used, but its job is done. I love these videos, Jennifer. Thank you."
Thank you, Anita! I love that word too. It has dignity behind it. Thank you for watching.
I hope you enjoyed today's video. I would love to know about your wardrobe this season. What words would you use to describe your style goals? Let us know and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week!

Practical Homemaking | Cook, Clean & Bake with Me

Join me for some Practical Homemaking. We are going to sort through the tablecloths, cook a one-pot enchilada pasta, deep clean the dryer, and finally, make some whole wheat blueberry muffins. Won’t you join me?

Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. Practical homemaking is about getting it all done and enjoying the process. Cooking a one-pot dinner, baking for the freezer, and tackling seasonal cleaning tasks are all efficient strategies to run a home.

First on the agenda, we are going to go through the tablecloths and placemats. My tablecloth storage has become a tad messy lately and I want to go through the inventory to see if any of our table linens need to be retired. I often encourage readers to go through their closets to see if there are worn-out things you need to retire: especially in your sleepwear and undergarments, but the same holds true with nearly every category in our homes: even table linens. I’ve had some of these placemats for years. You can tell we use them nearly every day because some of them are very worn out and it’s time for them to go. I’m separating what will stay and what will go and also rediscovering some old favorites in the process. Sometimes your table linens will be stuck at the back of a shelf and you forget what you have.  I wrap this up and now and admire the table linens before they go back onto the shelf.

Are you hungry now? Ok, I’m going to show you how to make this one-pot enchilada pasta recipe. It’s seriously good.

{"image":"https://i.imgur.com/E4MvLeC.jpg"... And now for a rather unusual cleaning task… One you not only need to do, but maybe didn’t know you needed to do. Ok, I’ll stop speaking cryptically. You need to frequently clean the lint out of your dryer. Have you ever looked in there? It is madness. So much lint. So, I’m going to get the laundry room ready first by folding the dry tablecloths (yes, we have tablecloths everywhere) and taking out the dryer racks to give myself room. Now I’m going to take my handy wet dry vacuum that I love. This thing is old school. And I’m going to add this attachment that I found on Amazon. This vacuum attachment allows you to go deep in that lint trap area to get all the debris out. It’s brilliant. This might take some time if you’ve let the debris build up in here over time. Look at what I’m able to get out! Yikes! And yes, I realize my apron is not only inside out but wrinkled too. It’s one of those homemaking days where things are getting crazy. Also, I didn’t even plan it but I’m wearing another striped shirt ha! Even though this might seem like an undesirable task to you, I tell you, it’s actually very satisfying. If I can’t get everything out with the vacuum, I bring out this crazy looking cleaning device. The curved nature of this scrubber thingamajig along with the bristles allow you to break up some of the lint down there that then allows the vacuum attachment to finally pick it all up. I’ve been putting this job off for a while because it’s kind of a big production, but now that I’ve cleaned this area, I feel the satisfaction of a job well done.

And finally, let’s make whole wheat blueberry coconut muffins. I’ve gone muffin mad over the past year. I find that making batches of muffins and keeping them in the freezer is a wonderful way to keep and enjoy baked goods.

{"image":"https://i.imgur.com/BKSBXHM.jpg"... To you, your books may be just personal accomplishments, but to many of us they have changed the course of our lives.

Thanks again, for teaching us to be our own versions of Chic.

The Chic Assignment March 2022

Welcome to The Chic Assignment for March, 2022 Before we begin, I would like to express my heartfelt support for the people of Ukraine and everyone who is affected by the war. I have been praying for your safety and for swift peace.

The Chic Assignment series is brought to us by The Chic Society, the private membership group on YouTube.  Joining The Chic Society gives you access to my exclusive members-only vodcast, which is published every Friday. I also do one livestream a month or do a Zoom call where we can all visit together and we now have a penpal program! Membership is only $1.99 a month (upper tiers are also available).

Chic Assignment No. 1 Enjoy Vivaldi's Spring from The Four Seasons

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) was an Italian Baroque composer, most famous for The Four Seasons- a group of four violin concertos which give musical expression to each season of the year. We are going to listen to Vivaldi's Spring from The Four Seasons performed by The Capital String Quartet

We will learn more about Vivaldi in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 2 Explore the poetry of T.S. Eliot (1888- 1965)

T.S. Eliot was an American poet, essayist, publisher, playwright, literary critic, and editor. He is considered one of the 20th centuries major poets.

T.S. Eliot (1888 - 1965)

You can read his poetry for free on Poetry Foundation and you can purchase T.S. Eliot Collected Poems

Today we read Whispers of Immortality and we will enjoy more of his poetry in the mid-month check-in.

Chic Assignment No. 3 Prepare your ten-item wardrobe for the upcoming season

It's that time of year again: we will be preparing the transition of our wardrobes. Depending on where you live, you will either be preparing for spring or autumn, but the key is to be intentional. What do you need to get rid of from your wardrobe this time last year? It's time to rid yourself of clothes that are worn out, not your true style, and don't fit in your lifestyle anymore. It's ok to donate clothing and move on to something that is more your style. When you donate clothes you are blessing other people and that piece might be better suited to them.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Journal your joy. Last month we focused on gratitude. By doing so we magnified what we were grateful for. This month we will journal our joy. You can do it whatever way you want, but if you need a prompt, you can write 10 things that bring you joy. That might be different from what you're grateful for. By journaling our joy we will expand our capacity for joy and will find that we experience more happiness and appreciation throughout the month.

Blue Zones Recipes | What's for Dinner?

Welcome to an all new What's for Dinner episode... This time we are looking at Blue Zone recipes. What are the blue zones? The Blue Zones are the five regions in the world where, statistically, people live the longest. They are identified as Sardinia, Italy; the islands of Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California and were researched by Dan Buettner, who is the founder of Blue Zones. You can find Dan's book on Blue Zones here.

It is helpful to analyze the diets of these Blue Zones. What do the people in these zones eat regularly? In today's video I've adapted some easy Blue Zone recipes for your own kitchen.

Thank you to Bright Cellars for bringing us today's video.

Hearts of Palm Ceviche I originally came across this recipe on the Blue Zones website. You can check out the original recipe here.  I modified the recipe and am very happy with the final result. I added mango, green onion, and a few more tweaks. My printable recipe is below.

The Chic Assignment series is brought to us by The Chic Society, the private membership group on YouTube.  Joining The Chic Society gives you access to my exclusive members-only vodcast, which is published every Friday. Chic Assignment No. 1 This month we discovered the music of Valerie Coleman. Valerie Coleman is Performance Today's Classical Woman of the Year and one of the top 35 Women composers in classical music, according to The Washington Post. The piece we are listening to is Imani Winds performing Valerie Coleman's "Umoja."

Learn more about Valerie and visit her website.

Chic Assignment No. 2  Enjoy the art of Vincent van Gogh

In today's video we dive into the tragic biography of Vincent van Gogh. If you've never heard the story of his life, you will find his story fascinating. How did Van Gogh go from a struggling and impoverished artist who didn't think much of his work to being regarded as one of the greatest artists in human history? You can learn more about Van Gogh and see his art for free here. Buy reproductions of Van Gogh's art for your own walls here, or buy a book with his complete works here

Chic Assignment No. 3 We are journaling our gratitude this month. I have found that doing so increases my capacity for gratitude and alters the way I think. I am more apt to find the "good" in every situation and go out of my way each day to find more things to be grateful for. What has your experience been?

Chic Assignment No. 4 We observed the birds this month. While staying in La Jolla, California earlier in the month, I befriended this magnificent Osprey. Observing the birds and being aware of their presence, habits, and calls bring us gloriously into the present moment. The Peterson Bird Guide for North America has always been a valuable guide for me in identifying bird species.

I'd like to give recognition to the upper tiers in The Chic Society. Members with links are highlighted below the graphics.

Intermittent Fasting Teas + 10 Breakfast Ideas

I'm sharing ten "break fast" breakfast ideas and we are diving into the world of fasting teas in today's video.

I do the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting. I've been doing this for two years and have experienced the many health benefits this lifestyle has to offer. I typically break my fast at 9:00 a.m. so my break fasts are also breakfast!

Disclaimer: While I always try to eat well-balanced meals that are healthful and meet my needs, I am not a nutritionist. Please consult your doctor and nutritionist before embarking on an intermittent fasting plan. This video is for entertainment purposes only.

Thank you to Pique Tea for sponsoring this video. Pique has an array of fasting teas formulated by Dr. Jason Fung. They also have a wonderful ceremonial grade organic matcha tea and a delightful vitamin c and elderberry supplement that tastes like a spoonful of sugar. Use code DAILYC for 5% off + a free sample pack.

This breakfast is one of my regular favorites: whole fat probiotic yogurt, blueberries, walnuts, chia seeds, shredded coconut, and monk fruit sweetener.

This smoothie consists of whole fat plain yogurt, 1/2 avocado, blueberries, almond milk, chia seeds, vanilla protein powder, shredded coconut. (Please note: this made 3 smoothies for me and my daughters). I do not measure so I estimated how much I would need to make this. The muffin is a whole wheat blueberry muffin. Recipe coming soon on the blog.
An old favorite: poached eggs on toast. I boil water and then crack the eggs into the water and cook for 3 minutes exactly, then remove with a slotted spoon. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and serve on toast (this is sourdough toast).

I made oatmeal in the slow cooker overnight. I placed 2 cups of oatmeal in the slow cooker along with one can of coconut cream and another canful of water. I cooked on low overnight. In the morning, I mixed in some almond milk and a bit of brown sugar and served it with the following toppings: chia seeds, blackberries, shredded coconut, and walnuts. Delicious!

I know what you're thinking... this looks gross! But it was delicious. This is a matcha chia seed pudding. The night before I mixed 1 cup almond milk with 1/4 cup chia seeds, a packet of Pique's Sun Goddess Matcha Powder (DAILYC for 5% + a free sample pack) off and a dash of maple syrup. I let this sit overnight in the fridge. The next day I plated out my portion (this makes 2 servings) and I topped it with shredded coconut and kiwi fruit.

Today I had deviled eggs and a fruit salad...

This is one of my favorites: cottage cheese, berries, walnuts and chia seeds. Delicious!

I frequently make this breakfast. I scramble eggs together with a bit of heavy cream, salt, and pepper and cook on a medium hot skillet. I top with shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, and chopped green onions. This is served with whole grain toast and a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice.

Chocolate mousse for breakfast? Sign me up! This is an overnight oats chocolate mousse. I initially found the idea from this video on Mina Rome's channel. I used 1 cup oats, 3 Tbs nut butter (almond or hazelnut is ideal), 1 1/2 Tbs unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 3 tsp ground flax seeds, 1 cup almond milk, 3 tsp chia seeds, and a dash of maple syrup. Blend all these ingredients in a blender and pour into individual ramekins. The next morning top with yogurt and raspberries. Decadent and delicious!

The final breakfast is one I frequently enjoy as well: avocado toast topped with everything but the bagel seasoning with a side of cottage cheese and blackberries. I drank this with a matcha latte.

Your Morning Routine Should Be Magical

Your morning routine should be magical… Did you know that? Allow me to explain.

Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. I’ve always been a morning person. I like getting up in the morning. I feel optimistic when I get out of bed. I feel grateful that God’s mercies run new every day. Usually, a good night’s sleep can wash away sorrows and frustrations.
Shakespeare wrote: “And sleep, that sometimes shuts up sorrow’s eye, Steal me awhile from mine own company”
Ah, I felt that one. But I digress. We are here to talk about a morning routine and how it should be magical. Well, after sleep has shut up sorrow’s eye, and you wake up, the magic can begin. Many people think that a routine is mundane and boring, but quite the opposite is true.
Keep Calm and Remain Classy Mug

It is in the recurring details of your everyday routine where true magic happens. You might feel like you’re going through the motions, but the momentum over time of your dedication to these small, quiet moments of the day, will reap benefits in your life that are unforeseen.
Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” He was right, you know.
Everyone’s morning routine will look different. I can’t tell you what to do. Some of you will like to go outside and do yoga. Some of you will want to go on a quick run or go to the gym. Some of you will want to read something inspirational. Some of you will want to get some writing done. Some of you will want to walk alone in the garden, during the most renewing time of the day, when the sun is rising. Some of you will pray and meditate. Some of you will plan. Likely you will do a combination of many of these things.
Glirst Air Pod Case in Vintage Bloom, Moon Phases Cloth Journal , Boxed Ink Pen in Dusty Blush

I’m about to tell you the secret key to all of this: the only thing that matters is that your morning routine is intentional. You will decide on everything you will do. You will know why you’re doing it. You will pay attention to the small whispers of life that happens to you during this time.
Rumi said, “The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you. Don’t go back to sleep.”
We know our routine should be intentional but did you ever consider that it should be magical too? I mean that through the intention, a certain magic happens. Think about it. Why do we do a morning routine? What’s the point? Why don’t we wake up whenever and do whatever we feel like every day? You’re being intentional for a reason. You want to design a certain type of life.
Robe by The Ethical Silk Company
One of the Chic Assignments this month is to journal your gratitude. I’ve been doing that since the beginning of the year. It’s a new aspect to my morning routine. I ignored the advice on this for awhile. I thought it was enough to remain grateful in my prayers. But wow. When you write down why you’re grateful and for what, miraculous things start to happen. You start to notice the good in everything. Even bad things that happen to you… those experiences become your teacher. There’s something really powerful… dare I say, magic, about writing things down. So I’m writing down my dreams and goals this year and what I’m grateful for. It’s been powerful.

My second book, At Home with Madame Chic, encourages the reader to be driven by the pleasures of the day. This advice remains solid in my own life. When I wake up, I am immediately excited about the pleasure I will take from my first sip of coffee. Of the feeling I will have when I step outside to check on the birds and greet the plants in the garden. I am driven by these pleasures and they feed me. Each encounter is magical and sets me up correctly for the day. So let me ask you this question: what are the magical moments of your morning routine? What do you look forward to? How can these moments drive you throughout your day? And a final word: keep your morning routine sacred. Don’t share it with too many people. These intentional magical moments are building something great in your life. They add to the je ne sais quoi that makes you so wonderful. Embrace it. Your morning routine should be magical. I hope you enjoyed today’s video and that every now and then, when you encounter a magical moment, think of me and smile. I’ll be thinking of you. Love, Jennifer

Comment of the Week

Daniela writes, "Oh I love #5! "Act as if it's impossible to fail" - I took a mindset course once that said there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. I loved that because essentially that's what life is all about. Giving us "feedback" on the choices we've made. Something that we see as "failure" is just a sign to course correct, or let go, or trust in the lesson that is being taught.

Great editing in this video, by the way! Very visually appealing. And finally, the color of that Rungolee blouse is stunning on you"
Hi Daniela, I love that perspective: there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. Thank you for sharing that with us!
I hope you enjoyed today's video and that it inspires you to fine tune your morning routine and make it magical.

The Ultimate Sleepwear Guide for Women 2022

Welcome to the ultimate sleepwear guide for women for 2022. Today I'm introducing you to several high quality sleepwear brands that you might not have heard of before.

Looking presentable always, even at night, is a main message of my work. I believe that taking pride in your appearance opens up a whole new world of beauty for you and affects you on every level. The sleepwear I'm modeling for you today can give you ideas for the style of sleepwear you'd like to wear at home.

Momme Silk is a wonderful silk brand that has very wearable sleepwear pieces. These are perfect for women who are looking for casual and non-fussy elegance.

Fleur't Modest Nightshirt  SELFLOVE20 for 20% off Oh how I love this nightshirt. It has a high neckline, built in shelf-bra, and pretty lace details at the collar and sleeve. The fabric is so soft... it's truly a joy to sleep in.

Fleur't Cami PJ Set in Cheetah  SELFLOVE20 for 20% off This set is chic and fun. When my daughters saw it they said they loved it. Fleur't put such amazing details into their sleepwear. I love the fit of the top and the art deco lace details combined with the fun cheetah print.
Montelle Intimates The bust-support chemise is my favorite item from Montelle Intimates. I wanted to share them again here.

This is their Parisian Kiss limited edition line. The lace details on this chemise are beautiful. SELFLOVE20 for 20% off

I hope you enjoyed this sleepwear guide. I will do a follow-up video to let you know how the pajamas are wearing. It is a pleasure to discover such high-quality brands.

5 Ways to Build Confidence | Lessons in Elegance

Our Lessons in Elegance continue today as we discuss the best ways to build confidence.

Welcome back to the Daily Connoisseur. Our lessons in elegance continue today as we uncover the secrets to building confidence. I am saving the best tip for last. It’s something you are not going to want to miss because, I promise you, this tip will change your life. Let's get into the 5 tips now...
Dress by Lilysilk Daily15 for 15% off

🗝Film Yourself This may sound crazy. Especially if you have no aspirations to be an actress or a YouTube star, but you can learn a lot by filming yourself. You need to know what you look like and how you come across. You will notice how you sit, stand, speak, etc. I have learned so much about myself from doing this. Sit yourself in front of your phone camera and say something. Push past the inevitable embarrassment you will feel. You can delete the video after you study it. Tell yourself a story or read a poem or a passage from a book. Then rewatch it. You will see yourself as others see you. Don’t just do it once, but do it a few times. You will become more comfortable in front of the camera and work on your elocution and how you carry yourself naturally.

🗝Polish your appearanceWhen you look good, you feel good. Everyone knows that. I have a plethora of videos on how to look and dress elegantly. I even have a video with tips on how to look good from behind! I would say the biggest factor for confidence has got to be your skin. If you’ve ever had a big pimple or breakout anywhere on your face, you know the agony of talking to someone up close. In my personal experience, all I could think about was my acne. Those of you who have read Lessons from Madame Chic know the story about the pimple on my nose that caused extreme embarrassment… especially with my highly discerning art history professor. I can laugh about it now, but it wasn’t funny at the time! Having clear skin is a major component of everyday confidence. I suffered from acne like most teenagers too. I even struggled with it in my 20s and 30s. Thank you to Hero Cosmetics and their Mighty Patch (Allure's Best in Beauty acne spot treatment) for sponsoring this video code JENNIFER gives 15% off.

🗝Brush up on your etiquette skills  Knowing what to do in all situations naturally gives you confidence. Brush up on your etiquette skills in all areas, from proper dining etiquette, to business etiquette, to greeting etiquette. Own an etiquette book like Polish Your Poise with Madame Chic or my friend Myka Meyer's etiquette books and brush up on your skills. When you know what fork to use, where to put your napkin and how to indicate how you are finished with your meal, you can free up your energy to enjoying yourself. Good manners exude confidence. They indicate that you were raised well and have a good education, whether that’s true or not.
Blouse by Rungolee DailyC for free silk face mask Earrings by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% off
🗝Correct your posture Body language tells so much. That’s one of the reasons why you are going to film yourself. Look at your body language and how you carry yourself. If you are slumped over in your chair or hunching your shoulders out of anxiety, you are not acting confidently. Your body language should be elegant, at ease, and open. Make it a habit to check in regularly with your posture throughout the day. Awareness is the first step.

🗝Act as if it were impossible to fail I told you I saved the best tip for last and that’s true. This one tip will completely transform your life. I learned about it in a vintage book by Dorthea Brande called Wake Up and Live. The key takeaway from that book is this: ACT AS IF IT WERE IMPOSSIBLE TO FAIL. The author suggests that we set ourselves up for failure constantly. We leave room for it. We leave room for rejection or for people to choose someone else. I want you to pretend like you already know the end and the results are in your favor. Pretend you already got the job when you walk into the interview. Pretend that they did accept your offer, pretend that you already won the affection of the crowd. This is not to suggest you live in denial perpetually. But your assurance in each given situation can only aide you in building confidence.
I hope you enjoy today's video.

Comment of the Week Kristin B. writes, "I'm all about a scheduled homemaking routine. After you posted a discussion on Little Women and the importance of the work not being shouldered by one family member, I was inspired to be more proactive about dividing the work in our home. I have seen a tremendous change in my work load! The meal planning is my next tackle. I love when you post these videos because it is so practical and yet it goes even deeper than the practicality - it helps us carve out a beautiful life!"
Hi Kristin, I'm so glad the Little Women video inspired you! Those tips inspired me too.

Comment of the Week

Chamaine writes, "I started using the Fly Lady for a cleaning system and it has been a tremendous game changer for establishing cleaning routines that will not burn you out...and I work full-time time, love serving my husband (who serves our family as well) and have 3 children. I also follow Minimal Mom which has helped with decluttering because you can't clean until you declutter first. Between Jennifer L. Scott, Marie Kondo, Dawn from Minimal Mom and Marla the Fly Lady, after 4 months I have escaped crippling depression and my family has also become stable and dare I say happy. We all work together and find joy in keeping the house tidy, clean and relational. Jennifer, you were the first to start me on this journey starting with Be Presentable Always and intro to capsule wardrobes. Thank you. Your videos have been life support when I was so overwhelmed and felt so powerless. In my journey I have been lead to the other ladies. Btw, shout out to Ariel, The Akward Mom who introduced me to the Fly Lady and made the system easy to understand. All the principles amongst these influencers blend together well. I hope my post blessed others as I have been blessed. Peace and Blessings, All ways."
