5 Keys to Effective Home Management

Today I’m sharing 5 Keys to Effective Household Management. If you know me, you know I love efficiency.  I believe every home should be run in an efficient manner in order to be managed properly. In today’s video I’m going to share 5 key areas that need to be in order.
When you organize these concepts in your mind, they seem less daunting.
🗝Key 1 - Implement a Cleaning Routine Everyone can agree that a clean and tidy home is essential to beautiful living. So, one way or another, the house needs to get clean. Implementing a cleaning routine that is strictly adhered to is essential. This will vary per household depending on your own individual needs. This will be an intricate system. It must be written down and scheduled. You can either do this on a family command center that is visible to all, or write it down in your planner or in a notebook. Account for the laundry, the bathrooms, the floors, the dusting, etc. Whether you do the cleaning all on your own, or hire the help of a housekeeper, get on a proper schedule to regularly rotate the cleaning and keep the house tidy.
🗝Key 2- Meal Plan - Meal planning is incredibly important for proper and effective house management otherwise you slip into the trap of having cereal and toast for dinner more often than not. When you have a plan, you can prepare and it feels so good to be prepared. My best advice here is to meal prep by stocking your freezer with everything from bolognese sauce and taco meat to your family’s favorite breakfast muffins. Also, plan what you’re going to cook each week, order your groceries and schedule in when you are going to make everything. While you’re cooking can you double the recipe to eat one now and freeze one for later? Or can you cook one, two, or even three recipes at a time and keep them in the fridge until they’re ready to enjoy? Here’s a trick I employ when I’m in a really busy season of life: I’ll order a handful of ready-made family meal trays from a local chef and have those for lunches or dinners on busy days. That ensures we get a healthy meal and it’s still less expensive than take out or drive thru. It also eases the burden of cooking three times a day and makes it fun and enjoyable when I do cook a meal. If you need inspiration on what to cook, I have an entire What’s for Dinner playlist.
🗝Key 3- De-Clutter on a Regular Basis A home is not effectively run if it is choking in clutter. You will not be able to relax properly and it quickly ruins a nice aesthetic. In the Madame Chic books I have chapters on how “Clutter is so not Chic”, plus strategies to tackle it once and for all. Get inspired by reading about how to get rid of your clutter. In addition to At Home with Madame Chic, check out books from my friends Dawn Madsen from The Minimal Mom, Cass from ClutterBug, and Toni Hammersley from A Bowl Full of Lemons also have books on clutter that are very motivating. Train your eye to detest clutter and when you see it. Sort it out.
🗝Key 4 - Keep on top of bills and paperwork This might be the least fun aspect of homemaking. I know that I can’t stand organizing the paper clutter and paying bills, but they must be regularly attended to. I recently shared my secret system for filing which saves so much time and aggravation. When it comes to bills, we need to pay them on time. I set up two days a month to pay bills to make sure we are on top of it. I keep all the bills in the same, easy-to-find place, not scattered around the house (I used to do that). But I keep them in our command center. Thank you to Truebill for sponsoring today's video.
🗝Key 5- Make the décor pleasing and enticing  I saved the most fun key for last. But just because this key is fun and creative, doesn’t mean it isn’t important for effective household management. When your home is beautiful and your décor pleasing, you actually want to implement these keys to maintain your home. So I’m not saying to go out on a furniture shopping spree. TrueBill will probably alert you that you’ve gone over budget! But I am saying, take a hard look at your space. Do you need to rearrange furniture? Hang up a painting that’s been sitting in your closet? Cut some flowers from the garden and add them to your space? Throw a colorful blanket over your tired sofa? For more inspiration check out my jewel box room video.

Comment of the Week

Jodi L. writes, "Hi Jennifer! Love the Assignments this month! We live in a 10 acre forest property, the house is situated directly in the middle, with trees surrounding. I am constantly aware of the wildlife around us but I love watching all the species of birds, and there are a lot!

An excellent book I read recently called What the Robin Knows by Jon Young, tells how all the different species are aware of each other as well, how they avoid one another and how they help one another. They are such smart creatures. Just fascinating! I highly recommend.
I love these assignments that you suggest every month - I look forward to them because they are guaranteed to enrich my life in a way I wasn't expecting.
Thanks Jennifer! Happy New Year to you."

The Chic Assignment | February 2022

Welcome to the first Chic Assignment of 2022! The Chic Assignment is a monthly challenge where we seek out the arts and improve the quality of our overall lives. Be sure to invite a friend!
The Chic Assignment is brought to us by The Chic Society. The Chic Society: Become a member of The Daily Connoisseur to get exclusive monthly live streams, access to my weekly members-only Vodcast, penpal program, and more. Only $1.99 a month (upper tiers are also available).

Chic Assignment No. 1 Discover the music of Valerie Coleman. Flutist and composer Valerie Coleman is Performance Today's Classical Woman of the Year and one of the top 35 Women composers in classical music, according to The Washington Post. If you want to smile this month, listen to Imani Winds performing Valerie Coleman's "Umoja."

We will learn more about Valerie Coleman in the mid-month check-in, but for now, you can visit her website to learn more about this talented composer.

Vincent van Gogh, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Chic Assignment No. 2  Enjoy the art of Vincent Van Gogh

We knew the day was coming when we would study the iconic Vincent Van Gogh. It's hard to believe that Vincent felt like a failure in his artistic life and how he is so famous his work has almost become a given... a cliche. Learning about Van Gogh was one of the most interesting portions of my art history class in Paris and I'm excited to delve back into his sad but interesting life with you this month. You can learn more about Van Gogh and see his art for free here

Chic Assignment No. 3 Journal your gratitude this month. Before you start groaning... just hear me out. Write ten things you're grateful for each day this month. Don't overthink it. It doesn't have to be the top ten things. There is no pressure here. You don't have to feel guilty if you forget to write something big down. It can be that you're grateful for something as big as your children or something as small as the rose by your sink. It can change every day. Just write the first ten things that come to your mind. If you forget a day, don't beat yourself up over it. Try to do it each day. I've been doing this since the beginning of the year and I'm noticing some very curious and positive effects.

Chic Assignment No. 4 Go outside and notice the birds. Whether you have a garden, a balcony, a front porch step, a nearby park, or an open field near your home, step outside this month and notice the birds that are native to your area. We tend to take wild birds for granted, tuning out their call and not noticing their habits. But they are a part of everyday life and noticing them can bring us back into the present moment. This was the inspiration behind my poem, The OWL. I noticed the Owl in my garden at Christmas time and it inspired me to write poetry.

If you feel inspired by any of these assignments, I would love to hear from you. Record your observations in the comments and your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

I hope you enjoy this near year of Chic Assignments! The Chic Assignment series is brought to us by The Chic Society, the private membership group on YouTube.  Joining The Chic Society gives you access to my exclusive members-only vodcast, which is published every Friday. 10 Essential Grooming Habits for a Proper Glow Up

I'm sharing 10 Essential Grooming Habits for a Proper Glow Up in today's video.

A Glow Up is a physical, mental, and emotional transformation for the better. Today we are focusing on the beauty aspect of a glow up. I'm sharing ten grooming tips that will help us glow with beauty.

A glow up is more than a makeover. It is an overall improved way of being. The glow up process can happy to anybody at any time. It is an intentional transformation. Let's talk about Glow Up with regard to grooming habits.

Tip 1 Double-cleanseAfter doing much research, I have learned that double-cleansing is an effective way to remove makeup and cleanse the skin. Here is an article from Vox on why you should wash your face twice. I like to use Paula's Choice Perfect Cleansing Oil followed by Paula's Choice RESIST Cream Cleanser  The oil cleanser takes off my makeup really well and the cream cleanser finishes the job off.

Tip 2 BHA or AHAWhether you use an AHA or BHA, exfoliation is important for having clear, glowing skin. I use the Paula's Choice BHA 2%  on a cotton pad 3 - 4 times a week before moisturizing.

Tip 3 Vitamin CVitamin C has many benefits for the skin. I like its brightening properties. I use the Paula's Choice Vitamin C  mixed with my evening moisturizer.

Tip 4 Deodorant Native SponsorThank you to Native's aluminum-free deodorants for sponsoring today's video. Code DailyC7 gives 33% off.

Tip 5 Cuticle oilCuticle oil helps your at-home manicure look more professional. Dry cuticles can ruin the look on even the most beautiful nails. I use Londontown Cuticle Oil  JenniferS for 25% off, but you can use whatever oil you prefer on your nails. You can do this any time... even when you're wearing nail polish.

Tip 6 HeelsCombat dry, cracked heels with a foot file and vaseline... So easy!
Luxury Body Butter from A'DEL Natural Cosmetics
Tip 7 Body moisturizerDry skin is not compatible with a glow up. Remember all over body moisturizing to avoid ashy, dry skin. My favorite moisturizers are listed above in the "featured in the video" section.

Tip 8 Moisturized lipsChronic dry lips might be an indication of dehydration. Be sure to drink lots of water, exfoliate your lips, and use a good lip moisturizer. Paula's Choice hyaluronic lip balm is a great one.

Tip 9 BreathFresh breath is something that everyone wants. I found this dissolving gum that lasts for so long called, Mouth Off. It's the best I've found so far.

Tip 10 FragranceWearing a light amount of fragrance might help you to feel pretty every day. I love Pinrose Perfume JSCOTT for free shipping: Secret Genius, Merry Maker, and Mystical Misfit. I would love to know... what is your favorite signature scent?

10 Days of Dinners | Intermittent Fasting

I often like to share "what I eat in a day" videos on YouTube... mainly because I love watching what other people eat in a day. Today, I'm doing a variation on that idea and sharing 10 dinners I recently enjoyed (plus a bonus meal).

When I say "dinner" I mean the biggest meal of the day. Sometimes that is lunch for me. I do the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting. I have breakfast at 9:00 a.m. and my last meal by 5:00 p.m. and then do not have anything to eat after that.
Of course you can enjoy today's video whether you do intermittent fasting or not. Hopefully it gives you some inspiration on what to serve your own family for dinner.

Comment of the Week

Jerri G. writes, "Hi, Jennifer. Thanks for the wardrobe videos. I've been working on this for about three years. After making a few mistakes, I am getting closer to what works for me and my climate, (south Texas). I have become much more selective about what items make it into my wardrobe and I am also willing to wait if I can't find the right piece. This is quite a turn around for me and I find it liberating."
Hi Jerri, I'm so excited for you to start the ten-item wardrobe journey! It's a very liberating experience!

Outfits of the Week | Winter in California | Ten-Item Capsule Wardrobe

I'm sharing outfits of the week from my winter ten-item capsule wardrobe. This winter has been very mild in California and I'm bringing out some spring dresses to layer. I hope you enjoy today's video

I do the ten-item capsule wardrobe, as chronicled in my Madame Chic books.

I was under the weather today and forgot to take my mirror selfie. So here is an image of the outfit from the video. I love my Thursday boots!

Foil-packet Roasted Fish with Vegetables
I am going to write out these instructions in a more general way as things will vary depending on how many people you're serving, etc. Cut off a large piece of foil and spray with cooking spray. You can line this with parchment paper if you do not wish to use the foil. Add as many veggies as you like. In today's video I add spinach, sugar snap peas, and radishes. Place your fish on top. Cover the foil packet so the fish and veggies are all enclosed. Roast in the oven on 400 degrees. If your fish is frozen, you will be roasting for 30 - 35 minutes. If the fish is thawed, you will roast the packet for around 20 minutes. Always test the fish to see if it is done before serving. Serve the fish and veggies over rice or noodles. This is a very easy way to cook fish and it's easy to clean up too!

Comment of the WeekHeather B. writes, "I really enjoy your interviews with Dr. Tae, she is so kind and knowledgeable. I'm so glad you talked about portion size, this was so helpful! I have a set of beautiful flow blue china from the late 1800s, the dinner plates are 8", the size of a salad plate today!"
Hi Heather! I am fascinated by the changing of plate size over time. Modern plates are indicative of our larger portion sizes. Thanks for watching!
I hope you enjoyed today's What's for Dinner video. If you have any great recipes, please let us know what you've been making in the comment section. Your comment could be chosen as comment of the week on the blog.

Intermittent Fasting Correct Portion Sizes | Dr. Patty Tae & Jennifer L. Scott

Join me and Dr. Patty Tae as we discuss correct intermittent fasting portion sizes on The Daily Connoisseur.

What portion sizes should we be having for our meals? What is the number one reason why intermittent fasting fails? How can we confidently train our appetites to enjoy a healthy portion size? We are discussing all of this in today's video
I do the 16:8 method of intermittent fasting, also known as time restricted eating, but this video is for anyone who is interested in learning about proper portion sizes, whether you do intermittent fasting or not.
Please note: this video is for entertainment purposes only. Please consult your doctor before trying intermittent fasting. Portion sizes will vary for each person and their unique health needs.

Meditative Homemaking on a Rainy Winter's Day

The rain is falling in tempered streams today. I’m able to do some meditative homemaking in peace. Won’t you join me?

Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. I have a light homemaking list to tackle today. I need to do the laundry, clean the kitchen, and make some pretty arrangements from the winter garden. And, of course, have a cup of tea.

Candle by Cellar Door Candle Co. Music Box by Music Box Attic, Painting by Jeffrey Lloyd Barnes, Flowers from Horchow.

But first, I need to finish getting ready. I find that getting dressed each day improves my motivation. I carefully select an outfit from my ten-item wardrobe based on the weather, what I’m doing that day, and how I’m feeling. Then I accessorize my outfit accordingly. I usually style my hair and wear light makeup. When I open my music box jewel box each morning and hear the Music of the Night, I can’t tell you how happy I feel.

Time for the laundry. I do a little bit of laundry every day. There’s always at least one load that needs to be done. Today, I’m doing the children’s laundry. I’ll get that going and then go downstairs to clean the kitchen. Here are a few quotes on laundry that I love:

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." - Pablo Picasso

“We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry.” - E.B. White

“As for laundry, I might characterize it as approaching the moral realm; there are days when it seems a miracle to be able to make dirty things clean.” - Kathleen Norris

“I love doing laundry! Except for putting it in the dryer, taking it out and folding it and then putting it away.” - Anonymous

The kitchen is one of those areas that needs constant daily attention. There’s a flow and function that takes place in the kitchen each day. Items to throw away, recycle, food to prepare, dishes to wash, dishes to unload, floors to be swept, tablecloths to lay down, herbs to cut, flower arrangements to refresh. There’s a lot. I probably didn’t even cover 1/3 of the things that take place in the kitchen each day. The key is to not procrastinate with it, but rather to enjoy it and get it done with. On a day like today, when I’m waiting for the rain to return, I like to be with my own thoughts. I get the best ideas while I’m cleaning the kitchen.

Ok, now that I’ve gotten the cleaning work done in the kitchen, it’s time to have some creative fun. My parents gave me some giant grapefruits and lots of lemons from their garden so I’m going to do a cheerful citrus arrangement on a platter. I think this will look best on the ledge above the table, so I need to wipe that down first. There’s something so cheerful about the color yellow! Right now, our yellow roses are in bloom too. What a great pop of color on such a gloomy day.

Time to venture outside for another winter arrangement. During the winter months when the garden is largely dormant, I like to get creative with my bouquets. Our bay tree not only produces bay leaves for cooking, but they look beautiful in arrangements too and are very fragrant. I’m going to clip some leaves before the rain returns. Sometimes I’ll combine the bay leaves with lavender, which we also have on hand this winter, and the occasional roses that are experiencing a winter bloom. This particular bay leaf arrangement is for the living room. I’m going to place it in a blue and white ginger jar to liven up the dark corner with some vibrant life.

By the way, people are always asking how we keep white sofas with small children. Well, this is my secret. I cover the sofas in white and cream plush blankets. They protect the sofas and still look pretty good. I wash the blankets once a week. And if company comes over, I’ll generally take the blankets off. But that’s how we do it. I love the coziness of this room. My favorite part in the room is the artwork.

Let’s enjoy a cup of tea together now. I can tell the storm is returning. It’s getting windy outside. I’m using the Pique hibiscus beauty elixir. I love this tea. It’s delicious. I’m having it with a slice of cherry pie… and reading Gwen John’s biography by Sue Roe. I’m taking my time with this book but keep coming back to it. John’s life was so interesting, and I love her artwork. I like to study artist’s lives. I find the creative process fascinating.

The rain is beginning to fall again. The air is changed with moisture. I need to close the shutters upstairs. Thank you for joining me today for meditations on homemaking. I hope I was able to keep you company with your homemaking today too.

How to Look Good from Behind | 5 Tips to Look Great

We tend to style ourselves from the front. We will do our hair that way. We don’t look at the back of our outfit. Today I’m here to ask you: what do you look like from behind? Do you even know?

I'm going to share 5 key areas we need to focus on in order to look good from behind. Let's go!
⚜️ Featured in the videoLint rollers 3-pack Bra strap tape Foot file (this is the best!)
⚜️ What I'm WearingRungolee silk blouse DailyC for free silk face maskMerSea Courtside sweater Mer Sea Hampton Duster (long sweater)Mott & Bow grey jeans JLS10 for 10% off Velvet Smoking slippers by Jon Josefballet flats by Jane Winkworthearrings by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% off pearl bracelet by SKYE Jennifer20 for 20% offNail polish Ring Me by Londontown JenniferS for 25% off Lipstick by Besame dusty rose

1. The head. Many people don’t think about this. A lot of ladies style their hair looking only at the front. In order to reach the back of your hair you might pull it all forward but when you finish, have you smoothed out the back? Make sure the back of your hair is as presentable as the front.

 2. The back. Here are a few unpresentable things that might be happening back there: your bra strap might be showing. You might have an ill-fitting bra causing pinching of the rolls, rather than a smoothing effect. Your tag could be sticking out. How many times has that happened to you? . You might have lint or dog hair on the back of your shirt. It's always a great idea to use the lint roller on your blouse before you put it on so you can reach all the spaces. If you have trouble with your bra straps staying in place you can use wardrobe tape to keep them hidden.

 3. The derrière. So many things to consider here. Always look at your outfit from behind. Is the view flattering? Is it what you want to see? If you’ve read Lessons from Madame Chic you will recall the story about the woman who had a hole in the bottom area of her trousers. Complete horror story, right? Make sure there are no holes. Also, make sure your pants fit correctly. Are they too tight? You can find smoothing undergarments that can help.

 4. Legs- however you like to maintain your legs, pay attention to those too. For me, I need to make sure my skin isn’t ashy and dry. That’s a big problem I struggle with. Don't forget to moisturize your legs if they are going to be on display. Don't forget the magic power of hosiery! Hipstik (JEN15 for 15% off) is my favorite hosiery brand. I love the elastic waste that never slips or fails.

 5. Your heels! This one is huge! Dry, cracked heels are very unflattering.  If you are not able to take care of this, wear shoes that cover your heels. This foot file is the best one I have found and you can find it for a good price on Amazon

How to Use Your Planner to Develop Good Habits and Achieve Goals

Happy New Year! It's great to be back on The Daily Connoisseur.

Most of us have a planner but we don’t use it optimally. In today’s video I’m sharing how you can use your planner for more than just scheduling your month. You can use it as a tool to help you develop good habits and achieve your goals.

⚜️ Planners Day Designer planner CONNOISSEUR10 for 10% off Planned & Proper planner DAILY10 for 10% off Budget planner (undated) Simple New Year Lists
⚜️ What I'm WearingLilysilk white silk blouse Daily15 for 15% off Mott & Bow Grey Jeans JLS10 for 10% off Nail polish by Londontown Guarded Jewel JenniferS for 25% offSKYE Jules 18k gold crystal pearl necklace Jennifer20 for 20% off MerSea Courtside sweater in black SKYE pearl bracelet Jennifer20 for 20% off

Here is my 5-step process to developing good habits through proper planning:

1. Write down your goals. Most planners have a section that allows you to write down goals. If not, they might have a few blank pages that you can use for this purpose. Why should we write down our goals? I am linking a Forbes article  that shares the neuroscience behind writing down your goals in order to achieve them. The neuroscience occurs on two levels: external storage and encoding. Both of these components work together to help keep our goals front and center in our minds.

 2. Visualize the end as if it’s already happened. Ask yourself: What do you need to do to get there? So take your goal and imagine that you’ve already achieved it. It can be something as big as publishing a book or something as small as clearing the clutter from your closet. What does the end look like? What will it take to get you there? This step is purely thinking.

 3. Write down all the action steps that you need to take to get you there. Schedule this in your planner. If we are going with the example of the book, you will need to write it, right? So make a plan to write every day. Draft out the time. Make sure it’s consistent. Make it realistic. Let’s say you plan to write from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. each morning before the family wakes up. Write that down in your planner. If your goal is to declutter your closet, write down the action plan for that. Do you notice that so far, all we’ve been doing is dreaming and writing? This is the crucial foundation.

 4. Set a deadline and mark this in your planner calendar. If I know someone is coming over, I can tidy the house like a maniac. That deadline sets me into action. We need deadlines to accomplish our goals. Set deadlines for your goals. If I have a deadline to finish a book manuscript, you better believe I’m going to take that seriously. Set a realistic deadline to achieve your goal.

 5. Actually do the action steps. Consistently. Hold yourself accountable. Do it. When you finish each day, check it off in your planner. Commit to these actionable habits for 30 days at a time. When you are finished with the 30 days, you might not want to quit. Let’s say you want to read 5 classic books this year that you’ve always wanted to read. Set aside time each night before you go to bed (instead of watching TV) that will allow you to read for 30 minutes. Guess what? After 30 days, I bet you will enjoy the new habit so much that you won’t want to quit and go back to your old ways.

BONUS: Keep your goals to yourself. Don’t speak about your goals unless you have someone you love and trust implicitly with your dreams. Many people lack vision or have a negative outlook on life. And all it takes is for someone to belittle your dreams to make you to fall slightly off track. If that does happen, just hold that criticism in your pocket and smile at their lack of vision when you finally do achieve your goal.
