The OWL by Jennifer L. Scott #poetry

Welcome to the final video and blogpost for the year on The Daily Connoisseur. I wrote a Christmas poem called, The OWL, and had the vision to make it into an animated film. I do hope you enjoy it.
The Owl On Christmas Eve I saw him, The owl upon my ledge. His yellow eyes they sharpened, The stars inside them pledge.
To convey certain wisdom, Of what I am not sure. We both just stared with held breath, A winter moment pure.
Mistletoe and rustling wind, The owl called out to me. “Peace is all there is,” he said. Atop the sorrel tree.
Presently a star did fall, The clouded moon was missed. Unexpected snowfall came, With snowflakes that I kissed.
Opening my eyes I saw, The owl had flown away. Returned he to his warm bed Awaiting Christmas day.
Thank you to Ruhama Azfar Rubai for creating the animation and to Evan M. Gallagher for editing the film.
And thank you for your support this year on The Daily Connoisseur. This was the best year yet on the blog and YouTube channel and you are the ones who have made it special! I appreciate every video you watch, every comment you leave, and every time you share my work. Thank you.
I will be taking a break until January in order to spend time with my family this Christmas. I am wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy new year! See you soon!

Life-Changing Homemaking Secrets from LITTLE WOMEN Part 2

Our homemaking series continues as we explore part 2 of life-changing homemaking secrets from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Today's video shares tips 8 - 15. If you haven't seen Part 1, you can check that out here. 8. Housekeeping aint’ no joke On page 107 Hannah, the housekeeper declares, “Housekeeping ain’t no joke”. Do you want to see the note I wrote down when I read this? Here it is: HAHAHA TRUE! Long term, sustainable housekeeping is serious business. It’s hard. It never relents. There is so much truth in Hannah's observation. It's important for everyone in the household to grasp this funny, plain-spoken truth. 9. Housekeeping should not lay on the shoulders of only one person. “The comfort of all depends on each doing her share faithfully.” (p. 112 Chapter 11 Experiments) Whether you hire help, or have a family chore system, or both, the homemaker should be aided in housekeeping. It should never fall on one person's shoulders. Ashley Buffa, a member of the Chic Society has a Smart Kid Chore System, if you need help in this area.
10. We need to reframe our thoughts about hard work. “Work is a blessed solace” p. 156 In chapter 16, “Letters” , we learn that we should take comfort in our work. It gives us "solace". On page 150 the sentiment is reiterated as work is described as a “panacea for most afflictions”. 11. Don’t miss the homeliest tasks People who hire everything out miss the homeliest tasks (p. 220) This tip refers to people who hire everything out, including interior decorating. Unless the homemaker makes a conscious choice to put personal touches in the home, those homes are missing the beautifying “homeliest” tasks. 12. If homemaking isn’t done regularly, nothing else goes well. On page 236, Hannah shares further truths about homemaking. If we don't get it done regularly, everything is disturbed. That's why a scheduled routine that is consistently adhered to is so crucial to overall success. 13. Make the best of what you have (p. 237) This is a theme we explored often in the Little House books. We need to make the best of what we have until we can upgrade. That upgrade might never come... or take years to come. So we need to find contentment now. 14. A homemaker’s happiest kingdom is home (p. 358) Meg and John had a bit of a rocky start to their marriage and home life, but Meg comes to the conclusion that her home is the happiest kingdom and should be treated as such. We could all benefit from this very royal mindset. 15. A Homemaker’s Spirit lingers in the home (p. 389) Beth's spirit lingers on in the homemaking, proving that a homemaker's spirit remains in the home, long after they are gone. Life-Changing Homemaking Secrets from LITTLE WOMEN

My homemaking series continues as I share 15 Life-Changing Homemaking Secrets from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. This is part one, which will share tips 1 - 7. I hope you enjoy today's video.
Here are today's seven tips. Please watch the video to hear me expand on all these thoughts.
1. Peace provides a pleasant home atmosphere The March family knows that a peaceful home is paramount for a happy home life. (p.11)
2. Replace your “leave me alone look” with a “Can I help you?" look (p. 14) Now don't get me wrong... I'm not telling us to mask our emotions and serve our family all day long. But most of us can adjust our attitudes and replace some of the negative looks on our faces with more positive ones. (I'm writing this mainly for myself, ha!)
3. Homemakers need true “breaks”. Marmee admits she never enjoyed housekeeping (p.108!) and is looking forward to her day off. We need true breaks where we don't do any housework or homemaking at all. This is critical to refresh our spirit.
4. Sometimes homemaking needs fresh eyes. Laurie had a fleet of maids but his parlor was still unsuitable. Jo was able to come in with a new eye and quickly refresh the room before company came over. (p. 49) We can benefit from asking someone to help us refresh our home as they can approach it from a fresh perspective.
5. A humble home can feel rich with love. (p. 50) Laurie doesn’t have a mother and even though he is wealthier than Jo, he envies her home life because she does have a mother. This parallels The Secret Garden, where the affluent Mary Lenox envies Martha's (the maid’s) home life with their wonderful mother. A wonderful mother can make a home feel rich. (p. 57) Laurie took comfort in that “humble” home of theirs.
6. Homemakers need their own space in the home that is truly theirs On page 105 we are introduced to Marmee’s corner. Marmee had a corner that she went to every day and sometimes it was the only neat space in the house. All homemakers should have their own corner. Marmee’s corner was always neat and pleasant.
7. Perpetual idleness is detrimental to home life “All play and no work is as bad as all work and no play” In chapter 11, Experiments, the girls do an experiment of only having fun and no work while they are on vacation. They find that idleness is actually bad for them. “Lounging and larking doesn’t pay” p. 112
Stay tuned for Part 2 on Thursday where we will explore tips 8 - 15...

Comment of the WeekAussie Connoisseur writes, "I loved your tip about getting inspiration from old films. I think one reason some people don't wear nice pyjamas is due to their budget. Particularly for women, that clothing budget has to stretch a long way due to the cost of quality undergarments. My solution is to have lovely things but have less of them, and take very good care of them."
That's the best solution! Thank you for sharing your observations.

Now that I’m finished baking the muffins, let’s turn to the dried orange ornaments that I make every year. These take a few hours to prepare in the oven so I will prepare these tonight. They make the house smell amazing. Take your orange slices or whatever citrus fruit you’d like to use and slice thinly. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 200 degrees F for up to 4 hours. When they are finished I let them sit out overnight to fully dry. This is what they look like the next day. You can use these as ornaments for your Christmas tree, or to decorate presents like I’ll be doing tomorrow.

But first, it’s time to clean up the kitchen by candlelight… It’s been a long day of baking and ornament making.

Fallen Fir candle by Otherland

Welcome to a new day. I shared with you last year that I am done buying wrapping paper! It’s way too costly and I can never seem to find a print I totally love. So I have taken an affinity to the brown paper packages tied up with string approach. I use brown recycled craft paper to wrap my gifts and like to make them festive with bows, stamps, paint, gift tags, and other items from nature like rosemary, lavender, bay leaves, orange slices, and more. Wouldn’t you love to receive something wrapped like this? We are giving our neighbors Allens Scottish Shortbread this year. When the packaging for a product is this pretty, you don’t even need to wrap it! I am just tying it with string and adding a gift tag and orange and rosemary for decoration. I don’t know about you, but I’ve built up a big appetite for lunch.

Pre-bake the pie crust for 10 minutes, until just starting to brown. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool.","Whisk together the eggs, cream, salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Stir in shredded cheese, onion and imitation crab. Top with the crumbled herbed cheese. Pour into the pie shell.","Bake for around 40 minutes, or until the center is fully cooked. Enjoy! "],"@context":"http://schema.org","@type&q..."}

Today we are going to have a crab quiche, a perfect festive brunch for the holiday season. I begin by whisking together four eggs, a cup of heavy cream, salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce. Then I add a cup of shredded cheese and 8 oz of crab meat. Real crab meat is always best but you can use imitation crab meat in a pinch if necessary. Now I add a half cup of chopped scallions (my favorite) and whisk it together. Now I’m taking a deep-dish pie shell that I’ve pre-baked for ten minutes in the oven and adding the quiche mixture to it. I cook this for around 35 – 40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the eggs have cooked all the way through. I’m serving this with some steamed asparagus. This was delicious for lunch today and I also enjoyed it for breakfast the next day.

How to Wear Presentable Sleepwear Every Night + The Latest in Sleepwear

How do you get into the habit of wearing presentable pajamas every night? I'm sharing 5 tips with you in today's video along with selections from the latest in sleepwear.
In Lessons from Madame Chic I write about the concept of looking presentable always, which includes sleepwear. Please note: due to supply chain issues, the hardcover of Lessons from Madame Chic is not available until January. Kindle and Audible versions are still available.
🌛5 tips to help you wear presentable sleepwear every night

1. If you are holding on to sleepwear that is not presentable… ask yourself why. Why are you holding on to things that are past their prime? Moreover, why are you wearing them daily? Especially when you probably have nice things that you’re saving for special occasions. Don’t save your nice sleepwear for special occasions. Today is the special occasion.

2. Get rid of everything that is not presentable. Don’t even hold on to it. Don’t think about it. Get rid of it. If it has a hole, stains, is saggy, doesn’t fit properly, it's time for the sleepwear to go.

3. Organize your sleepwear storage. However you store your sleepwear, make it easily accessible to you. Store your out of season sleepwear somewhere else. In the middle of summer, you don’t need your flannel pajamas in your top drawer confusing things.

4. Start to wear it every night… even if it makes you uncomfortable to wear nice things. You will eventually tune your taste for it.

5. Get inspiration from films. Watch a period drama where there is a night scene and notice the sleepwear. Draw inspiration from films and books to give you courage to dress well at night in your own home.

Do you like to wear presentable sleepwear on a nightly basis?

Add the rest of the parsley."],"@context":"http://schema.org","@type&q..."}

Date Night Surf and Turf

This one doesn't have a printable recipe as I really "winged" it. I steamed the cold-cracked lobster meat with a wedge of lemon for a few minutes until it was fully cooked. The filet mignon steaks were covered in extra virgin olive oil, seasoned with salt and pepper, and seared for around 3 to 4 minutes on each side until they were medium rare... (or in the case of what actually transpired: medium well). This was served with a side of steamed green beans, and roasted new potatoes. The lobster and steak was topped with melted Irish butter and the lobster was sprinkled with Old Bay seasoning. What a delicious dish!

Comment of the WeekChristiana writes, "You have lit a fire in my soul, Jennifer, and rekindled my love for the arts through your videos. I was on the verge of nervous collapse as a mom of 4 small children. I’d lost so much light in my eyes. Your videos have reconnected me to pursuing tiny bits of passion and beauty in my life— thanks to you I have been endeavoring to make a ritual out of the mundane: cleaning the grime off of stovetop and admiring the shine as I finish; sitting down to play the first page of Mozart’s “Rondo Alla Turca” to keep from losing my piano skill; to keeping stacks of books by my bed and reaching for books at bedtime instead of reaching for my phone. I have honed in on my personal style and now use a capsule wardrobe."
Christiana, I couldn't be happier to hear about these changes. I am thrilled that The Daily Connoisseur has been a part of your transformation. Keep going!

The Chic Assignment Season Finale

Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to The Chic Assignment Season Finale. What a year it has been. The Chic Assignments have accompanied us through the good times and the bad, bringing us out of our reality into a different world… a world of art, music, and poetry. I thought in this year’s finale for this series, I’d explain to you why these videos are so important to me and how they can be a force for good in our lives.
The Chic Assignments have inspired me to add art to my life in many ways… one of them has been to play the piano more regularly. I’ve been practicing Johan Sebastian Bach’s Sheep May Safely Graze. I’m not the best pianist… but that’s not the point. We shouldn’t strive for perfection, but for joy. In intention is to inspire you to find the art in your everyday life.
I hope you will watch today's finale, which recaps the amazing artists we have studied and the modern musicians we have enjoyed. The Chic Assignment series will resume in February, 2022. If you have any suggestions for artists to study, please leave them in the comments.

My whole life I couldn't let go of it & felt a sort of death from that. I took up ballroom dancing 2.5 years ago & have been slowly working on ballet & feel so wonderful now. A Glow Up After 40 | The Inner Work

A Glow Up after 40... today we are discussing some of the inner work needed.
Welcome back to The Daily Connoisseur. In Part one on the Glow Up process, we focused on the outer work... how to look good. In today's video we are going to look at a few key aspects to having an inner glow up. This is in no way a comprehensive list. I am only sharing 5 points today.
A glow up is a mental, physical, and emotional transformation for the better. In part one we talked about some of the key points to a glow up regarding looking good. Today, let’s discuss the inner work involved in a glow up because it’s vastly more important.
This is not a comprehensive list... these are just 5 points on a very long list of inner work that must take place. I can do a part 2 if you'd like to hear more...
⚜️ What I'm Wearing
Dress by Lilysilk Daily15 for 15% off

⚜️ Mentioned in the videoAtomic Habits by James Clear Mother Culture by Karen Andreola Myka Meier Modern Etiquette Made Easy The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
1. Individuality Who are you? Did you know that you are totally unique? As humans we are in some ways all the same: for example, we all have a nose. But we each have a unique nose that is not replicated on anyone else. We all have different fingerprints. We have different lines on our face. Our eyes are different colors. What makes us laugh is different. We are attracted to different things. We probably all like music, but the music we like is different. Who are you? What is your unique stamp on the world? Many women who reach their 40s find themselves having suppressed their individuality over the past few decades… whether it was to fit in at work, or with other moms, or with your family. How can you express your individuality? If you have lost your individuality, it might be time to look for it again.
2. Confidence I can confidently say that confidence comes with age. As a chronic people-pleaser and introvert, I struggled with confidence in my 20s, and even 30s. When you hit 40, you begin to realize that sometimes no matter what you do, someone isn’t going to like you. Or they will have a problem with you. You realize that you have nothing to do with that. In the past, you might have done backbends to please other people and really tried hard to make them like you. When you turn 40, you just accept: this is who I am. I am confident in that. People are not going to like me and that’s ok. I’m not catering to that percentage of people in my life. I’m going to unapologetically be who I am going to be. Here is another key to remember: all the mistakes, rejections, and failures in your life actually help you! They build on your confidence. How? You learn from them.
3. Passion This goes hand-in-hand with individuality. You might have squashed your passions over the past decade or more while looking after other people and getting established in life with your home and work. Now you’re probably still looking after other people, because that doesn’t ever change, but you have a little space to breathe. Or you just came out of a breakdown and realized you don’t do anything you’re passionate about anymore. You used to play the piano, or the guitar, or the harp. You used to sing in the choir. You used to paint. You loved painting. You used to read more. You used to write poetry. You used to dance. You used to laugh. Now it’s just working and paying bills, and cooking dinner, and folding laundry and the flame of your passions feels extinguished. Well, it’s time to get that back. In The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Jean Brodie declares on her 40th birthday that she is "entering her prime".
4. Compassion Having compassion and grace for people who think and do things differently from you is an integral part of having a glow up. Kindness and compassion perhaps go farther than anything you can do internally.
5. Ambition Ambition is a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. This is not to be confused with having work ambition…. Getting to the top of your profession. If that’s what you want to do, that’s totally fine. I have aspirations for that myself. But ambition can be anything from, wanting to be the top lawyer in your firm, to living a slow and intentional debt-free life off grid. Do you see what I mean? It’s going to look different for everyone and that’s ok. What are your goals? Do you have ambitions? Your ambition could be to homeschool your kids and give it your absolute best. Your ambition might be to write a book in your spare time and get it published one day. Your ambition might be to read 7 novels next year. Or to start walking every day. What is your ambition? And how are you going to achieve it?
Thank you to Skillshare for bringing us today's video.
