This installment of the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast keys in on the presumptive presidential nominees’ relationships with important parts of their coalitions. First, in an interview on “The Breakfast Club,” former Vice President Joe Biden said, “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.” The crew talks about Biden’s relationship with black voters, then debates the findings of a new study suggesting that — contrary to the conventional wisdom — President Trump does not have a unique appeal to white working-class voters.

In turn, Trump has called for Obama and his administration to be investigated. In this installment of the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast, the crew asks who is benefiting from a high-profile conflict between Obama and Trump in an election year. FiveThirtyEight Debate Club: What’s The Best State In The U.S.?
Welcome to the very first FiveThirtyEight Debate Club! While we’re all still working remotely, we figured now would be the perfect moment to try to divide the office even further. With that in mind, various members of our staff will be holding debates on a range of subjects.
On this first episode, we debate an oft-argued topic here at FiveThirtyEight: What is the best state in the U.S. — or, more specifically, if you could live in only one state in America and never leave, which one would it be, and why?
Watch the video above to find out our favorite states, and be sure to tell us yours on YouTube or Twitter.
And for future episodes, let us know if you have a debate topic you’d like us to take on.

All but about a dozen states are in some phase of reopening after COVID-19-related shutdowns, and projections of the pandemic’s death toll in the U.S. have correspondingly increased. In this installment of the FiveThirtyEight Politics podcast, the crew discusses whether an overarching plan is in place for this stage of the crisis — and how Americans are behaving regardless. They also look at the latest data suggesting a competitive race for control of the U.S. Senate and consider a poll showing that American men may be deluding themselves about their role in child-rearing during the pandemic.
