April Fool’s Day Paranormal-Scope

Photo by Luke Stackpoole on Unsplash

Have fun today! But don’t believe everything!

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:

Pixies love pranks and cupcakes. Your choice!

Taurus:

Elves walk solemnly into the deep forest refusing to be part of this mayhem. Take everything said with a grain of salt. Don’t sign important papers today.

Gemini:

The White Rabbit keeps checking his watch. Be prompt and still schedule in some me time.

Cancer:

Were-pups just want to play. Play with someone who loves you.

Leo:

Faeries aren’t much for jokes. They don’t understand them. Spend some time in a bookstore and get something you would enjoy.

Virgo:

Werewolves are a pack for a reason. Someone close to you needs to hear from you. Even a phone call will cheer them up.

Libra:

Shapeshifters dance with abandon. Plan a party with friends or family. Bring the music.

Scorpio:

A mermaid sings your name. You will meet a new friend and an opportunity will disclose itself.

Sagittarius:

Nessie swims at ease. Finally things are beginning to mellow out. Ignore the pranksters.

Capricorn:

Release the Kraken! This will be a week of mischief and mayhem. Lay low. Maybe take some time off and do some things you’re always wanted to do.

Aquarius:

You cannot drown in the arms of the mer. An old flame will brighten and may reach out to you. It’s up to you.

Pisces:

Were-bunnies are  hopping everywhere. Some of the gifts they are leaving are chocolate. Have fun but don’t eat too much.

Are You Ready for April Fool’s Day?

Photo by Christopher Alvarenga on Unsplash

They say seeing is believing, but then again, look closer. Things are not always what they seem.

In some countries, there is the practice of playing jokes and pranks on April 1st. The  Scandinavian countries seem to particularily enjoy this. There are newspapers that like to participate by publishing one false story to see if readers catch on.

Where did these pranks and jokes originate? And why April 1st?

Some blame Geoffrey Chauncer and his Canterbury Tales, while others say no no. In 1508, French poet Eloy d’Amerval referred to a poisson d’avril (April fool, literally “Fish of April”), possibly the first reference to the celebration in France. Apparently, there is an attempt to put a paper fish on the person’s back without their noticing. On that date, a Flemish noble observed other nobles sending their servants on silly errands with notes of nonsense.

A lot of this is being quoted from the Wikipedia, so please excuse my perchant for frivolity. Here goes:

Although no Biblical scholar or historian are known to have mentioned a relationship, some have expressed the belief that the origins of April Fool’s Day may go back to the Genesis flood narrative. In a 1908 edition of the Harper’s Weekly cartoonist Bertha R. McDonald wrote:

Authorities gravely back with it to the time of Noah and the ark. The London Public Advertiser of March 13, 1769, printed: “The mistake of Noah sending the dove out of the ark before the water had abated, on the first day of April, and to perpetuate the memory of this deliverance it was thought proper, whoever forgot so remarkable a circumstance, to punish them by sending them upon some sleeveless errand similar to that ineffectual message upon which the bird was sent by the patriarch.”

Because pranks and jokes are common in so many countries, people tend not to to anything serious on that day waiting until April 2 to conduct business as usual.  So beware on Monday when April comes along. Smile, laugh, but remember it’s all in good fun or at least meant to be.

The Dark Side of Us

If you’ve read enough of my blog posts, by now you probably realize that I’m a pretty optimistic person. Even when I run into touch situations that get me down, I usually don’t stay down for very long. I’m what one would call a “glass half full” person. As such, I usually think the same thing about others. For instance, even when someone has messed up, I’m always trying to see the good in a situation or the good in that person. And most of the time, this really does seem to work out. We humans are a wonder considering how well the good majority of us follow a rule of law. We aren’t chained in place, we simply rein our baser instincts in for the most part.

Recently, I’ve been listening to a podcast called Cold that does a deeper dive into the Susan Powell disappearance back in 2009. In listening to this podcast, it is pretty tragic hearing everything that happened and it gives you insight to just how complex we humans can be. I know this isn’t the first time I’ve wondered if a type of person can changed or be “repaired” for use of a more callous word. We all have our issues and “skeletons” but I always find myself giving pause in these situations that go so extreme. What happened to have it end up that way? Was there no other recourse? Was there some way this tragedy could have been avoided? Can we really change who we are fundamentally and if so, what is considered fundamental? I realize there is so much we don’t know about the human mind and for that reason these cases always leave so many of us baffled.

My husband doesn’t get why I listen to these sort of murder mystery cases, but despite my positive outlook on life, I’ve always been drawn to puzzles of all sorts. Perhaps it is the need in me to fix or try to make something better. I think all of us or at least hope a lot of us have this every now and then. Otherwise, where would or world be?

Thanks for reading and have a good week.

A Very Unexpected Paranormal-Scope

Photo by Banter Snaps on Unsplash

On my side of the planet, the world is getting brighter, and Spring is making itself known. I, for one, is grateful for it’s warm presence.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:

Were-catepillars are sitting on mushrooms giving advice. Only take advice from someone you trust.

Taurus:

Were-puppies frolic in the new warm grass. Plan to go frolicking with friends. Enjoy your life.

Gemini:

Cuddle your local Bandersnatch. You may be surprised how a little kindness makes you a new friend.

Cancer:

Pixies are dancing on their heads. Things are not what they seem. Never judge by appearances.

Leo:

Were-kittens are hiding everything. I know you put things safely away, but do you remember where they are later.

Virgo:

The Jabberwocky has spread its wings with an eye on a new location. Travel may be in your future. How exciting!

Libra:

Were-frogs love to crook the love songs of Spring. Get some new music to enjoy.

Scorpio:

Scorpio dancers may look like fun but be careful. A unthoughtful action or word can sting.

Sagittarius:

Were-bunnies are hopping everywhere. Enjoy the gifts they bring and be sure to share with others.

Capricorn:

Were-goldfish are not crackers. You may find your fortune suddenly increase. Save or spend wisely.

Aquarius:

Were-Robins are looking down with one eye. What are they looking for? Have you dropped something? Keep a keen eye out.

Pisces:

The Were-Hawk swoops down on the unexpected opportunities. You will have new choices to make.

Your Time

I love the quiet of early morning. I often write about the craziness and fast pace of this world because it is something very relevant to me and many people I meet. Additionally, I ‘m forever seeking out ways to manage my own “load” in this world and that usually involves some sort of breaks with family or just relaxation in general.

This weekday morning, as I steal a moment to myself to write this blog, I’m reminded of the “when” in a day. You see, I am a morning person. I can do nights on occasion but in general, I think more clearly in the morning hours. This quiet, peaceful time after several hours of sleep (I wish I could say 8 but it isn’t always so—this is something I try to strive for and can’t stress its importance enough) is my favorite part of the day as the world around me is asleep and I feel as if I’m getting a secret peek at life’s vulnerability. A little coffee and a nice view go a long way on these mornings.

We all have our preferences— morning versus evening, time to hear ourselves think. It is important to take these moments in time to reflect and meditate, even if that simply means hearing yourself think. We can’t be everything to everybody in these chaotic lives we lead if we can’t make time to be ourselves first.

Happy writing this week and don’t forget to spend some time with just you.

Flawless… Doesn’t Exist

Why is it so hard for us to admit we are wrong or even that at times, we need help? I think about literature through the ages… by Homer, Dante Alghieri, Shakespeare, Austen, Dumas, Dickens, Poe, etc. They all wrote about flawed characters. But then, in many ways, to be human is to be flawed, is it not? Then why we do we have such a hard time accepting these flaws?

Now, I don’t mean to be hypocritical so I will come out and say that I place myself in this exact group when I ask “we”. I can logically say that I am flawed but if one were to ask me whether I embrace these flaws, my answer would be a resounding no. Not to mention, even though I realize that I have many flaws, I also find it harder to admit some versus others. For instance, admitting I am an emotional eater is not as difficult as admitting I can be an overbearing mother or wife—there are different degrees of difficulty.

This all being said, it is very hard to move past these flaws or even continue to improve upon them without the acknowledgment that they exist. Additionally, our mission to improve ourselves is a journey full of tradeoffs and sometimes we aren’t willing to sacrifice to gain. What I have learned personally though is that embracing these flaws can prove very beneficial—even if they are not something we can even change. If anything, they teach us more about who we are and what we stand for. And if we can get smart about them, they can also help us understand when we sometimes need a little help to move forward.

Happy writing this week!

A Very Irish Paranormal-Scope

Photo by Amy Reed on Unsplash

I didn’t believe in four-leafed clovers, until a friend gave me a jar filled with them. I had searched in vain. She told me that all she had to do was look down and there they were at her feet. Now I believe.

While I am not qualified in any way to read neither stars nor planets, I am intimately linked to the paranormal in the world in many ways. So are you.

The paranormal-scope is for entertainment purposes only and is not meant to guide your life by.

Aries:

Leprechauns have left a four-leafed clover on your doorstop. Always pause and pick up your luck.

Taurus:

A Gancanagh is an Irish male faery known for his seductive ways. Someone will try to talk you into something you don’t want to do. Stand by what you know is right for you.

Gemini:

The Fear Gorta is a phantom of those that suffer from hunger. Give to a charity this week that feeds the poor.

Cancer:

Never eat the mushrooms from a faery ring. They are poisonous. Take care with everything you eat this week.

Leo:

A pooka can lead you astray from the best path for you. Consider the advice from those you don’t know, then go and get expert advice from those you do know.

Virgo:

A Merrow sings in the waves. You need a day off for solitude and reflection. Perhaps a walk along the beach will give you peace.

Libra:

The Selkie is torn between our world and the sea. Sometimes it’s good to change scenery to get a better perspective on life. Plan a getaway!

Scorpio:

The Clurichaun loves good drink and inhabits wineries, pubs, and wine cellars. If he talks about hidden treasure, wish him well and go on your way. Whatever you do, don’t follow him.

Sagittarius:

The Joint-Eater will sit next to you invisibly in a restaurant and eat have your food. You wanted to eat smaller portions anyway.

Capricorn:

Queen Mab crosses your path. Smile and wish her a good day, then continue on your way being careful never to turn your back on her. She may gift you with good fortune for your gracious manners.

Aquarius:

Failinis, the famous undefeated hound, finds you irrestible. It bring good fortune to its new friend.

Pisces:

Glas Gaibhnenn, the legendary cow with green spots, has come your way. Not only will you get a bounty of milk, but good fortune will pour in abundance.

Spring laughs in my ear everytime I see Irish step dancing. I love all dancing, but for me the exuberant joy in Irish step dancing melts the winter blues away. Enjoy! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
