Homemade Flour Tortillas

TPW_1095I don't made flour tortillas from scratch very often because they take a little time, but every time I do (and I did yesterday) I vow never, ever to buy tortillas in the store again. Flour tortillas are high on the list of things that just don't translate well to mass-production/supermarket fare, and while larger urban areas do have specialty markets that offer fresh tortillas for sale, I don't happen to live near one. The tortillas in my store are lifeless, wrapped in plastic, and were...

Masculine and Manly Winners

The winners of the masculine and manly mixers are:

#1733 Querida: "My favorite man is my Hubs. He's easy-going, even-tempered, British – all things I'm not myself and need in my life. My Daddy would be my favorite, but he's not British, so Hubs edged him out."

#21298 Alison Elizabeth: "Sorry boyfriend, I love you, but my Dad is number one. He's just too goofy not to be!"

#29837 Angela: "Daddy Dearest!"

Congrats, winners! Contact prizes@thepioneerwoman.com to claim your loot.

Masculine and Manly

Because Father's Day is less than a month away, today I'm giving away three (3) KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixers in this industrial (read: not shiny and red) "Imperial Black" color. It's masculine and manly…but don't let that dissuade you womenfolk from entering! It works just fine for chicks, too.

Restaurant-Style Smashed Potatoes

Sorry. I'm on a restaurant food kick lately. First the Grilled Chicken and Pineapple Quesadillas last week, then the Fried Mozzarella Sticks yesterday…and now this.

TPW_8617This.

TPW_8541Here's what you need. Red potatoes, bacon, softened butter, sour cream, green onions, salt, pepper…

And a very special ingredient.

TPW_8548These. French Fried Onions. This is not a paid advertisement. This is a recording.

You can also fry your own onions using my Onion Strings recipe. I'll throw a parade in your...

Fried Mozzarella Sticks

TPW_9000Okay, okay. Fine. Mozzarella sticks, American chain restaurant, yum, good, everyone loves them, yada yada yada.

Please listen. You haven't tried fried mozzarella sticks until you've made them yourself at home, and you haven't tried fried mozzarella sticks until you've made these fried mozzarella sticks. Marlboro Man loves American chain restaurant mozzarella sticks (he's such an easy date)…and last night he proclaimed these the best he's ever eaten. Then he gave me the key to his heart...

Salted Caramel Brownie

TPW_8738I fought the caramel. And the caramel almost won.

Okay, people. I posted about my experience in Charlotte, North Carolina. That the trees were beautiful the people were warm and welcoming and the men all sound exactly like John Edwards. But without the media scrutiny. I also wrote about a box of pastries from a local French bakery, specifically the tea cakes and the salted caramel brownie, which pretty much changed my entire outlook on brownies in general.

My post was melancholy, as I do...

Run, Don't Walk

I've been playing catch-up ever since the family and I returned from our Orlando vacation—something about six humans walking around theme parks for seven days that brings your life to a screeching halt—so I'll save my new recipes for next week, after I've had time to dig out from under the sunblock-smeared carnage. I'll just warn you that Monday's recipe is unforgivable. If you have any sense about you or respect for the basic principles of eating healthy, you'll stay far, far away.

Noodles and Other Important Matters

I have a new recipe to post tomorrow, but today I have several matters of utmost importance:

ONE

While I was gallivanting around Florida and who knows where else, three blessed angels took over my Tuesday duties on the Tasty Kitchen Blog.

ericalea red curry coconut noodles 01 mainEricalea, prolific Tasty Kitchen member, prepared this recipe for Red Curry Coconut Noodles, which had originally been submitted to Tasty Kitchen by Nika. Here are a few of Ericalea's beautiful process shots:

Grilled Chicken & Pineapple Quesadillas

TPW_8348We returned from Orlando around noon Sunday, and after a quick stop at the grocery store and the long, desolate drive down our long, desolate gravel road, I headed straight…for my kitchen. I'd been gone for exactly two weeks.

As God is my witness, I'm never leaving my house again!

Until next week.

We ate in restaurants (obviously) the entire time we were in Florida, and at Hard Rock Cafe twice. I ordered things suggested to me by the waitresses both times I was there (It's a hobby I have...
