New IELTS questions from the UK – August 2025 (General Training)

Our subscriber D.M. kindly shared the writing questions from his recent IELTS exam in the UK, below:

IELTS Writing Test – General Training

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You have a friend who works as a fitness instructor. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:

– describe your current fitness routine
– ask him/her to create a fitness plan for you
– include some questions you have about fitness

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Some people believe that it is better for company decisions to be made only by managers, while others think that it is beneficial to involve employees in the decision-making process.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you work or study?
– Can you describe the house you live in?
– What would you like to change about your house?
– What do you usually do in your free time?
– Do you think it’s important to have a lot of free time? Why or why not?
– Did you have much free time when you were a child? How did you spend it?
– Would you describe yourself as a patient person? Why or why not?
– How does patience help in daily life?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a conversation you remember clearly. You should say:

– who you had the conversation with
– what the conversation was about
– when and where it took place

and explain why you remember it so well.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Is body language an important part of communication?
– How do you communicate with someone who doesn’t show emotions?
– What skills are needed to communicate effectively with people?
– Do you think communication skills are natural, or can they be learned?
– Has the internet improved the way people communicate with each other?
– What are some negative effects of online communication compared to face-to-face interaction?

Writing task 1 (a report)

The chart below shows the actual and predicted population size of three cities in 1990 and 2000 (in millions).

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Many young people change their jobs or careers every few years.

What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative trend?

New IELTS questions from the UAE – August 2025 (General Training)

With thanks to our student H.A., who recently sat the IELTS exam in the UAE, here are the Writing questions he remembered:

IELTS Writing Test – General Training

Writing task 1 (a letter)

You would like your friend to join you on a camping trip. Write an email to your friend. In your email:

– invite him/her to go camping with you on a particular date
– explain why you would like him/her to come with you
– give details about the trip

Write at least 150 words. You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

Some companies promote their employees based on the number of years they have worked in the organisation.

Do the advantages of this practice outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you work or study?
– Why did you choose this field?
– What do you dislike about your job / studies?
– Do you prefer using a laptop or a tablet?
– Do you often work on a computer?
– What tasks do you usually complete on a computer?
– Do you think computers make work or study easier?
– How would your life be different without computers?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a place with many trees, such as a forest or a park. You should say:

– where it is
– how you first learned about it
– what you can do there

and explain why you would like to visit this place.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Do people in your country keep plants at home?
– What kinds of plants do they usually grow?
– Is it possible to grow plants on a balcony or in small spaces?
– Should governments make urban landscaping a priority?
– How can planting more trees in cities improve people’s lives?
– Do you think schools should encourage children to learn about gardening and plants?

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

– Do you like going to the beach?
– How often do you visit the beach?
– What do you usually do when you are at the beach?
– Do you prefer relaxing or being active when you visit a beach?
– Do you often stay up late at night?
– Why do you stay up late, or why not?
– What do you usually do when you stay up late?
– How does staying up late affect your next day?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a goal you have achieved. You should say:

– what the goal was
– how you worked towards achieving it
– when you achieved it

and explain how you felt after reaching this goal.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– What does success mean to people?
– Are people who were disciplined as children more likely to be successful than others?
– What are some common ways to measure a person’s success?
– Do you think success is more about personal happiness or financial stability?
– How do cultural values influence the definition of success?
– Can failure be an important part of achieving success?

– Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
– Do you work or are you a student?
– What do you like about your studies?
– Is there anything you dislike about your studies?
– Do you like looking at photographs?
– What kind of photographs do you enjoy taking?
– How often do you take photos?
– Do you prefer taking photos of people or places?

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a funny movie you have watched. You should say:

– what the movie is called
– when and where you watched it
– what the movie is about

and explain why you found it funny.

Part 3 (Discussion)

– Why do some people enjoy watching funny movies?
