Interview with D'Elen McClain

For most of my life, I’ve gobbled books up in every genre from biographies to romance. Mystery novels were my favorite go-to and kept me awake long after my family went to bed. In 2006, at the age of 45, I fulfilled a lifelong dream and became a police officer in a rural Arizona community. I’m now a detective specializing in sex crimes and the last thing I want to read, when I finish my shift, is a mystery novel. To truly relax, I escape the real world and immerse myself in vampires and werewolves. For this same reason, I write paranormal romance, and fulfill my need to fix the world, one alpha male character at a time.
What inspired you to write this book?
As a child, I fell asleep writing stories in my head. I continue to use this technique as a good way to relax and clear my mind of the day to day stresses from my job. The world of Fang Chronicles developed during many sleepless nights and I finally decided to put it on paper. I always knew I would write, but needed to reach a point in my life where I was ready to sit my butt in a chair and do it. Writing is one of the biggest stress relievers I have and the friendships I’ve developed with readers are priceless.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
After developing and stowing characters in my brain at night, I spend my days off work typing them. I always have a well-developed picture of each person but for some reason they seldom cooperate. They argue, fight, whine, and use bribery to get their way and more often than not they win. As the keyboard controller, I always have the last say, so if you ever wonder why I kill someone off it’s because I’m a vindictive writer and I refuse to loose every battle.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
In my world of Fangs, vampires and weres discovered after hundreds of years fighting that they are the key to the other’s survival. Each pack of weres is ruled by a vampire, but with longevity there must be a catch and mine is the ability to produce children. For weres—breeding with humans is the only way to procreate. Between mates, the desire for offspring is strong but sacrifice of the very love that binds them is the only way they can fulfill their longing. Throw in deadly werecats with a few evil vampires and Fang Chronicles exists in secret alongside our everyday lives.
Do you write in different genres?
Yes, I first started blogging about my true-life adventures of being a mid-life police detective. My blog turned into a book and then I wrote the first Fang Chronicles, Amy’s Story. Since then I’ve published three additional books—Bad Luck Officer, F C: Emily’s Story and F C: Zenya’s Story. I’m currently writing Bad Luck in Small Town based on a homicide investigation, and F C: Mandy’s Story.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
No, it saves my sanity. When writer’s block hits I work on another book in progress. I maintain two blogs, Twitter, and Facebook accounts though this year I hired an assistant to help with the popularity of my Fang Chronicles books. Please don’t worry though, if you send me an email, or private message on Facebook, Brittany passes them on. Her primary function will be author guest posts and interviews on the Fang blog, soon to be featured on Fang Fridays.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
For me there’s a difference between the words writer and author. From the first word I put on paper, I became a writer. The road to author took longer. Being self-published has been an extended journey but I will never forget my first fan letter. I printed the email and placed it in my wallet. It’s still there today and will always be my defining moment when I claimed the title of Author.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I have many pleasures but with age I’ve learned to leave guilt behind. Chocolate, red wine and hard rock music are prevalent in my home. My preferences lean toward Hershey’s, Dona Sol sweet red, and Buckcherry. My husband is well-aware of my (Buckcherry, lead singer) Josh Todd fantasies.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
Since early childhood I’ve loved animals. I’ve had a pet scorpion, tarantula, and many fish through the years but nothing warms my heart like dogs. Charlie, our one-hundred and sixty pound Rottweiler, is ruled by Duchess, our ten pound Chihuahua. They both trained me and my husband to provide treats and obey all commands.
I’m also an avid gardener with a small piece of paradise in my backyard. It includes a goldfish pond, strawberry patch, and assorted vegetables and herbs. In the spring, I’m sporting dirty hands while holding earthworms and ladybugs but in summer, you’ll find me reading next to my waterfall on my favorite lounge chair and holding a tall glass of ice tea.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Anything and everything by Ilona Andrews. I’m a huge fan of this husband and wife writing team. I need them to write faster but gosh life comes to a complete standstill in my house when I gobble up their latest book so I’m probably lucky they don’t.
Where can readers find you on the web?
My blog http://fangcronicles.wordpress.comhas all the latest Fang news but you can also find me on Twitter @delenmcclain and Facebook http://www.facebook.com/delenmcclainI also blog all things cop at http://badluckdetective.com
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Fang Chronicles: Zenya’s Story
Nicolas’s body was giving out. Lack of food, torture, and the loss of his pack had finally taken away his will to live. The next beating would be his last. No vampire had visited him in weeks. When he got here, he swore he would take cats with him when he died, but that wasn’t going to happen. Thoughts of revenge barely managed to get past his pain and suffering. His friends would need to handle the retribution for the murder of his pack.He fell asleep thinking of death.A small ray of light entered his cell. His cloudy mind knew this was it. Did he have a burst of energy to fight one last time? He didn’t think so.He heard the steps of a single cat coming closer than normal. Maybe it realized he was so close to death it no longer mattered. A shadowed form knelt beside him. The cat was inches from his body.A thread of hatred broke through his agony.Fuck yes, he would be taking one of them with him in death. Every bit of alpha’s power he possessed brought him to his knees, and his restrained arms successfully wrapped around the throat of his enemy. His weak hands should have been able to twist the head off, but this death would take longer. He would slowly squeeze every drop of air from the monster’s body. With a clouded but glinting gaze, he looked into the face of the man beneath his death grip. Zenya’s green eyes stared; panic evident and her small hands came up to grasp his. She was a female cat and one that he knew. The shock caused him to loosen his grip, but her terror remained, and low gasping words came from deep in her throat.“Amy sent me.”His fingers relaxed. His raspy words sounded in her ear. “Helping me won’t keep you from death.”She was taking deep breaths but never looked away. “Fine, but kill me when you no longer need me.”“That can be arranged.”

Interview with Maer Wilson Author of Relics

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
First of all, thank you for letting me stop by today. I live in the high desert of Southern Nevada and love it here! I have two dogs, who are my kids. They insist upon it. I co-host a literary podcast, MythBehaving, which is loads of fun and has been an awesome experience so far. Also I feature other writers on my blog and try to keep folks up to date on my own work. I used to be a professional stage actor in Southern California, but I retired out years ago. Now I teach Theatre at a local college.
I’ve read fantasy and sci fi for years as my main reading genres, so this was a natural genre for me to write in.
What inspired you to write this book?
This book actually grew out of the main characters, Thulu and La Fi. I used to play World of Warcraft and there were several people in our guild whose names began with “Moo”. This one couple especially was confusing and I thought I’d give them nicknames based on their in-game names. The result was Thulu and La Fi and when I saw the names, the characters were in my head saying, “No, we don’t belong to them. You need to tell our story!” So, I sat down and wrote the first draft in five weeks. Of course, the subsequent drafts took over a year and included ripping out the entire second half of the book and rewriting it.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Relics is an Urban Fantasy set in San Francisco. It’s the first book in the series, "The Thulukan Chronicles", which follows detectives Thulu and La Fi as they navigate an Earth forever changed by the return of myth and magic. Their detective agency deals with supernatural clients, the dead, undead and anything else that comes their way. They’re hired by an ancient daemon to find the missing relics he needs to close a dangerous portal.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
It depends on the name. Thulu and La Fi grew out of a game, yet I then had to choose names that they could be nicknames for. Fiona was an easy one and I played around with last names until I came up with Thulukan to get Thulu. For many of the other characters, like Reo, I knew his stage name but not the rest. I wanted his initials to be BAM and his onstage persona to be completely different from his real life. I wanted what everyone called him to be a cool name, too. I did research until I came up with Brandon Arreo Malone. Some of the other characters required research to get the right flavor for what I wanted their names to sound like or mean.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Hands down that has to be Jones, although all of the magical characters can be tough since they are so old. Jones though, is well over eight thousand years old and a daemon besides. I try to make him enigmatic and charming and wise. Hopefully that comes across, but I don’t think of myself as those things, so I have to work at creating that illusion. He has so many facets and layers that it really isn’t work though. He is a joy to write.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
That would have to be La Fi, although I really enjoy creating characters and love all my characters. La Fi, though, is the one who is in my head the most, demanding I tell her story. I’m enjoying how she is evolving as the series goes on.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I let them develop, but I also have them pretty solidly in my head. I spent years in theatre and creating characters onstage is pretty much second nature to me. I think that helps with creating them for the book. Some simply spring from my head to the book. Other times, I work on getting exactly the right tone and feel. As far as lists go, I keep a timeline with notes on appearance, but not personalities. I know who they are so well that it’s almost like describing real people when I write them.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
That would be the shower scene. I’ll include it at the end. J
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
I’m hoping they can be. I explain enough in Book 2 that it stands on its own, but will want the reader to go back and pick up the first book. I imagine that Book 3 won’t be quite as easy, but who knows, since I have not finished writing that one. The overall story is gaining complexity as it goes, especially with the changes to Earth.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I have to be comfortable. I’m envious of those who can write anywhere. I need to be at home and in my study, at my desk and kicked back, with my feet up on a small ottoman. I don’t really keep to a schedule for the novels, although I’m writing something every day. I also write for my website, podcast site and two gaming fansites. I like to listen to music when I write and usually have a film or gaming or epic soundtrack on. Nothing with words usually, though, because that would be distracting. Soundtracks, though, are awesome.
What can readers expect next from you?
Portals, Book 2 of The Thulukan Chronicles, is complete and going through the last round with my beta readers before I submit it to my publisher. I’ve begun Book 3, Crossroads, which I’m very excited to fully get into. Two prequel short stories have been completed and gone through my beta readers. I also have a historical fantasy, The Journal, sitting on a back burner, teasing me now and then.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Sure and thank you for asking. From the above-mentioned shower scene:The door opened. A cool draft of air wafted my way, swirling the steam in the shower. I peeked out to see Thulu shutting the door behind him. It was a great view.“So, have I ever mentioned that I'm a soul reader?”I moved forward to clear the small waterfall and gave him a suspicious look. One never knew with Thulu.“No, I don't think you've shared that bit of information.”“I'm quite good at it, actually.” He sat on one of the side seats and motioned to the one across from him. I moved to the other seat.Nodding, he continued, “I'm quite surprised you didn't know this. In some circles, I'm known as the Great and Wonderful Reader of Souls.”“Oh, really? I'm shocked that this could have escaped my attention all these years.”“Well, this is the perfect time for me to read yours. Being that you're all pruney.” I looked at my hands. They were pretty pruney. I shrugged and held out my hand palm up.

The Nosferatu Brotherhood with Annie Nicholas

I’ve been a vampire groupie for as long as I can remember. My first memory of them is the movie Dracula by Frank Langella (1979) when I was seven years old. (We were camping and a neighbor had a small black and white TV.) But my favorite is Francis Ford Coppola (1992) Dracula.
I’m not going to bore you with a trip down memory lane of vampire movies that have influenced me but I thirty *cough* something years in my head. When I was beginning to play with the idea of writing a book I knew it had to be vampires. I’d be sitting at a desk for hours on end writing so it had to be about something that I loved.
The idea of my Nosferatu Brotherhood was born one night while trying to figure out what my angle would be on the mythology. I loved the 1921 movie Nosferatu. (I actually had a link to the full movie from my website until recently.) I didn’t want my vampires to be beautiful. I wanted gritty and fierce.
So my version of the myth separates the vampire nation into clans. The Nosferatu clan polices all other vampires. Rumor is they traded more of their humanity for greater power. This makes them appear less human. All of them are bald with pointed ears. All are ruthless when it comes to keeping the laws. Not just anyone can be turned into a Nosferatu. Only male vampires can survive the transformation, no humans could, and definitely not any females. This makes them a brotherhood of sorts.
I loved this idea so much I used in two of my series. The Vanguards and The Angler.

Interview with a Vampire, Penton-Style

Will Ludlam here. I’m a lieutenant in the vampire scathe that’s taken over the small town of Penton, Alabama. There are about seventy-five of us who moved here to the middle of nowhere with our bonded human familiars (no coercion, I promise).
See, this vaccine was created to fight a human pandemic virus and it turned the blood of vaccinated humans poisonous to us. Poisonous as in, will kill us faster than a speeding wooden bullet. Humans don’t even know we exist, and they’re in danger of wiping us out anyway by starving us.
Vampires everywhere are freaking out, let me tell you. And there are crazy, starving fanged people wandering all over the place (one of whom is my evil powermonger of a biological father), so we wanted to get away from the city. Believe me, Penton’s about as “away from the city” as it gets.
But I’m bored, so I decided to start a Penton newsletter. Will’s World—catchy, eh? Today, I’m interviewing our scathe leader Aidan Murphy. He’s the guy in charge. The big guy. The head---
Aidan: Will, shut up. If we’re gonna do this, ask your questions. I have work to do.
Will: Yeah, yeah, fine. Okay. Tell us about yourself.
Aidan: (silence)
Will: Gonna play it like that, are you? Well, I’ll tell them that you’re Irish but have been in the American Southeast for almost two centuries. You were turned vampire more than four hundred years ago. You are too serious and stubborn for your own good, which drives your lieutenants crazy, by the way. You grow flipping FLOWERS, which isn’t a very manly vampire thing to do, if I say so myself. And you have women throwing themselves at you because they like that whole broody, tortured thing you have going on, but you think women are too much trouble. Which is good for me because I like some variety in my—
Aidan: *Rolls his eyes.* Will, shut up and ask a real question.
Will: Grump. Okay, what gave you the idea of creating this big scathe and buying a ghost town in rural Alabama to repopulate?
Aidan: It was getting too dangerous out there for our unvaccinated human familiars. So many humans got the pandemic vaccine that it’s hard for vampires to find people to feed from. I didn’t want our fams kidnapped for the black market that’s springing up for unvaccinated humans, or for the vampires who follow me to be staked in order to break their bonds with their fams. Penton, Alabama, seemed like the perfect solution. It’s isolated. It was virtually a ghost town, so I was able to buy up all the property. Everyone I allow to move here just wants to be left alone to live in peace.
Will: Well, except the peace thing isn’t working too well right now, is it?
Aidan: *Glares at Will* This is off the record—I don’t want to see anything about attacks and wars and beheadings in the newsletter, got me?
*Will nods, but has fingers crossed behind his back.*
Aidan: My psychopath of a brother, Owen, attacked us, then your maniac of a father turned out to be behind it. And some more of those self-righteous peacocks on the Vampire Tribunal are siding with him. We’re going to have to fight them or be destroyed, I’m afraid.
Will: Since we’re talking *coughs* off the record, what about this doctor you kidnapped—er, I mean—have visiting us in the locked rooms under the clinic? Tell us about Krystal Harris.
Aidan: You’re the one who found us an unvaccinated doctor. She’ll be perfect, you said. She’ll want to live here, you said. Well, guess what? The woman can’t be enthralled worth a damn. She’s stubborn, too. And she does NOT want to live here. She tried to stab me with a freaking fork.
Will: Aw….you like her.
Aidan: *Narrows eyes* Interview’s over, and it’s your turn for patrol duty. Get to it.
Will: Methinks he doth protest too much….Okay, okay. I’m outta here.

Book Description:
The bloody war between the Vampire Tribunal and the defiant scathe of Penton, Alabama, rages on, forcing its residents and their bonded humans to retreat into the underground fortress of last resort: Omega. There, Will Ludlam is charged with the care of Penton's humans, though he longs to fight alongside his vampire brethren. He knows the risks: as the renegade son of the Tribunal's vicious leader, Will's capture could doom the resistance.
Yet he is determined to prove his worth to his adopted scathe, to his vengeful father and to former US Army officer Randa Thomas, his beautiful, reluctant partner. Randa has little faith that a former member of the vampire elite has what it takes to fight a war. But as their enemies descend upon Omega, Will's polished charm and Randa's guarded heart finally give way to the warrior within.
Fans of Susannah Sandlin's Penton Legacy are sure to devour this long-awaited third installment of the steamy paranormal series.

Release date: October 9, 2012Publisher: Montlake Romance
Book Description:
With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal.
A Scottish gallowglass warrior turned vampire in the early 17th century, Mirren Kincaid once served the Tribunal as its most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the Tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the Tribunal wants him back on their side—or dead.
To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer—actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn’t believe he deserves?
It’s a town under siege, a powerful warrior in a battle with his past, and one woman who can make the earth move—literally—as the Penton Legacy continues.

Book One Penton Legacy seriesBy Susannah Sandlin
Following a worldwide pandemic whose vaccine left human blood deadly to vampires, the vampire community is on the verge of starvation and panic. Some have fanned into rural areas, where the vaccine was less prevalent, and are taking unsuspecting humans as blood slaves. Others are simply starving, which for a vampire is worse than death—a raging hunger in a creature too weak to feed.
Immune to these struggles—at first—is Penton, a tiny community in rural Chambers County, Alabama, an abandoned cotton mill town that has been repopulated by charismatic vampire Aidan Murphy, his scathe of 50 vampires, and their willingly bonded humans. Aidan has recruited his people carefully, believing in a peaceful community where the humans are respected and the vampires retain a bit of their humanity.
But an unresolved family feud and the paranoia of the Vampire Tribunal descend on Penton in the form of Aidan’s brother, Owen Murphy. Owen has been issued a death warrant that can only be commuted if he destroys Penton—and Aidan, against whom he’s held a grudge since both were turned vampire in 17th-century Ireland. Owen begins a systematic attack on the town, first killing its doctor, then attacking one of Aidan’s own human familiars
To protect his people, Aidan is forced to go against his principles and kidnap an unvaccinated human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time since the death of his wife in Ireland centuries ago.
Dr. Krystal Harris, forced into a world she never knew existed, must face up to her own abusive past to learn if the feelings she’s developing for her kidnapper are real—or just a warped, supernatural kind of Stockholm Syndrome in which she’s allowing herself to become a victim yet again.
Susannah Sandlin’s REDEMPTION is the first in the Penton Legacy series. Book two, ABSOLUTION, will be out September 18, and book three, OMEGA, on December 18.

FIVE THINGS UNDER THE FULL MOON -Guest Author Margot Berwin and a Giveaway

Last night was one of the first warm nights in New York City and it was a full moon too, so I took the elevator up to the 15th floor and sat on the roof all night under the moon and wrote. I was thinking about how much I love being a writer, especially when everyone else is asleep and no one is bothering me, and so I decided to write this post on my five favorite things about being a writer.
DaydreamingGuilt-free sitting around is one of the best perks of being a writer. My ideas come from dreams both at night and during the day—I actually get paid for closing my eyes and laying in bed and then getting up really fast and writing everything down before I forget. My bed is always covered with books and notes and I even sleep with my laptop. I get some complaints about that-but I don’t care!
TravellingI don’t always love writing in NYC—it’s noisy and crowded and there’s too much going on all the time, so sometimes when I get an idea for a book I’ll go live somewhere else for awhile. I sublet my apartment and rent a place in a new city where no one knows me and I can be a whole new person. For Scent of Darkness I went to live in New Orleans. For my first book, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire I lived in the south of Mexico. Sometimes I travel in my own neighborhood too. I’m a huge perfume fan as you can tell from the topic of my book. I like to walk from my place on 14th street, all the way uptown to Bergdorf Goodman’s fragrance department and spend a few hours surrounded by beautiful cut glass bottles and awesome un-affordable scents!
Saying I’m a writerWell, to tell you the truth, this one works better if I say I’m a writer of paranormal erotica. Guys are instantly more attentive--no surprises there. Although my books are more mind manipulation than physical, I do have a dating and sex column in the bushwickdaily.com and I have written erotic stories for nerve.com. Another funny thing is that when you say you’re a writer, people always want to tell you stories so that you’ll write about them!
Book touringWhen I go on a tour I go to a different city every day and I never stay anywhere for more than 14 hours. With Scent of Darkness I went to New Orleans, Miami, Nashville, Connecticut, Colorado and Alabama. Oh Brooklyn too of course, but that doesn’t count because it’s only five minutes away on the L train. I got to see a lot of places, really quickly, and more importantly I got over my huge, lifelong fear of public speaking.
Just sayingSaying what I want to say without too much interference from other people is one of the great pleasures of being a writer. My editor at Random House always says “at the end of the day, it’s your name on the cover of the book, so do what feels right to you,” I love her for that!
