Welcome to the Tour for Shield: Allie’s War, Book Two by JC Andrijeski

Hi everyone! Thanks so much for joining me today, the first on the Bewitching Book Tour for Shield: Allie’s War, Book Two. I have to say, I’m more excited about this tour than I have been for any I’ve done. I really love this book, even compared to others in this series, which happens to be my absolute favorite one to write. Shield is the book I dreamt about before I’d even written the first in the series, Rook: Allie’s War, Book One. It’s the book where the character of Revik really started to haunt me, and demand that his story be written.
Of course, I don’t want to give away any spoilers as to why that is – or why this took off with this book, in particular, but I will say that something just ‘clicked’ when I started writing this book...and that same something pretty much drove (and continues to drive) the rest of the books in the series, including the “Early Years” prequels. Shield was the book that opened up to me who the main characters really were and what their story was about.

For those who aren’t familiar with the series, here are a few blurbs to give you an idea of what you’re in for ~

Book Description:
“And they say Death will live among them in the guise of a child....”
Grappling with her new identity as “Bridge,” a being meant to herald the end for all of humanity, isn’t even Allie’s biggest problem. She’s also coping with a whole new set of rules around her seer marriage, as well as the power-hungry Rook she helped put in the White House, who is currently doing his best to start a war with China.
Then the boy appears. A sociopath with all of the energetic markings of Syrimne, a highly dangerous telekinetic seer who killed thousands during World War I, he doesn’t appear to have aged in one hundred years.
Worse, he thinks Allie belongs to him.
About the Allie’s War Series:
An urban fantasy paranormal romance set in a unique, gritty version of Earth, populated by a second race of beings called seers, the Allie’s War series centers on the relationship of a strong female protagonist, Allie Taylor, and her antihero guide, Dehgoies Revik. Falling into the new adult genre of books, the Allie’s War series takes place in a modern version of Earth you’ve never seen, that spans centuries along with the lives of its main characters, the seers, and the wars they fight with themselves and their human allies and enemies, (steamy sex scenes in parts!).

Interview and Giveaway with Stavros: Author, Artist, Fangsmith

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to write in this particular genre?
I had a dream.  Back in the early 90’s, while visiting with my then-girlfriend’s father’s in Washington State, I was studying Impressionist painting and poetry.  There was nothing in my world at the time that could have caused it.  But it lit upon me with such terrible ferocity that I woke up at 5am one morning, sweating and excited, and just started writing.  That was the beginning of 15 years of intense research and development.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
I am intrigued by the vampires’ timelessness and variety.  Not their supposed immortality, that’s fiction, but that they have been with us from the very beginning – even before our written languages.  During my research and development for the One Blood series, I discovered stories and references to bloodlust, bloodletting and consumption, and the belief of undead ghouls in almost every country that took shape upon the earth, except a small region in Indonesia, as far back as the oldest oral histories.  That intrigues me.  It sets my brain on fire to think that we, as a species, have grown and developed with the ideology of vampirism since the primordial ooze.
But yet, 99% of Vampire literature and modern culture only goes as far back as the loose-lying threads of Bram Stoker’s inspirations from Vlad Tepes and Elizabeth Bathroy.  It is appalling that some much rich and exciting history is out there, being overlooked for the same ole same old thing.  But! …the variety of fictional vampires, their lore, and intricate histories that have been created from this limited Transylvanian scope isutterly amazing.  It deserves a minute of silent awe.
You have the Count on Sesame Street teaching children how to do arithmetic and sexy gun-totting, leather-clad hotties to the grotesque horror of Nosferatu and a mute clan ravaging Alaskan villages to Rice’s blood-soaked Egyptian lore and the twisted teen-angst glitter of the Sparkly Ones.  Truly, the breadth and scope of the kinds of vampires that are out there is stunning.  However, there is so much more history that we could draw upon.  Imagine if you will, where the vampire could go if all this wonderful effervescent creativity of so many gifted writers began to dig deeper and look further into our ancient doctrines, religions, and lore than what they think they know.  Wow.  That prospect, right there, intrigues to no end….and I can’t wait for those stories!
So….I started writing some of them. LOL!
Please tell us about your latest release.
My latest release is the second volume of Vampire News: The (not so) End Times Edition.  It’s nonfiction - an annual anthology that attempts to collect all vampire happenings from around the world, from both the fictional and the real.  As far as I know, it’s the only thing like it that combines all aspects of vampire culture.  As an anthology we try to encapsulate the previous year in review, collecting articles, news, quips, art, interviews, rants, blog spotlights, vampire balls, fangsmithing, movies and books that were released, webisodes – we really do try to capture as much as we can, giving the reader an honest look at the who, what, when, and where of vampiredom.
What inspired you to write this book?
I got a call from the Vampire Professor, Bertena Varney, M.A.M.Ed, in late December, 2011.  She had this idea for a “little” nonfiction book, and wanted to call it Vampire News, and was wondering if I would be interested to help in some way.  I immediately, said yes, and began brainstorming.  With a name like Vampire News, I began drafting concepts on how to create a “real” news program, hosted by a vampire.  I pitched her my musings, she dug ‘em, and I got to work creating the imagery of The Vampire News Network; while she started contacting authors.  Since she had the books and film angle fairly covered, I ventured into web serials and real vampire culture, tapping my contacts in that vein.  And what started to emerge as we began putting it together was this wonderful eclectic collection of fictional and real voices that I had not heard before.
So, this year, Bertena and I, pushed ourselves a little harder. We went further into the concept, drawing upon the epic Mayan warnings of doom and gloom throughout 2012 and produced our greatest collaborative venture to date.  Now, I’m trying to raise production funds so that I can launch Vampire News as a weekly 5-minute webisode series, featuring News in a traditional newsroom setting, yet slightly twisted toward our gothic sensibilities.  The show would widen its base to include all aspects of horror culture, the paranormal, ghost hunting, and real vampirism, going so far as to have a “Psychic Weatherman” that updates us on how the weather effects our psychic abilities and the paranormal realms.  It’s really very cool, actually.  So, I’m trying to raise the production capital necessary to get it off the ground.  And like the cover on the first edition of VN, we will have a Vampire anchorwoman with revolving human guest anchors….that she’ll dig into at the end of every episode.  I mean…it wouldn’t really be “vampire news” if it didn’t shed a ‘lil blood.
V””V
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Yes.  The vampire, simply known as, Z.  From the One Blood series (Blood Junky & Love in Vein).  Her full, formal name is Zia Jean Bell.  She is a hellcat that inhabits my bones and cuts her swagger through each word.  I never know what she is going to say or do at any given moment – which is both thrilling and utterly terrifying at the same time!
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
No, I don’t do for formulas.  I brew tea in the exact way that I allow my writing process to unfold.  There is a process, yes, but it’s not formulaic.  I simply need to trust my process, show up at the computer each morning, and get my ego out of the way.  I’m merely a tool by which the story passes.
What is your favorite scene from one of your vampire books? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Oooooh, that’s a hard one.  Because, I forget about what I write after I write and edit it.  Really, I’m blond that way.  So, when I pick up one of my books and start reading, I have the vague remembrance of putting time in the chair and typing, but it always reads new and fresh.  Sometimes, I’m blown away.  So, my favorite scenes keep changing with my moods.  But there is this one passage I will share.  It is from Blood Junky, my first novel.  I have just completed a new edit on it for its eBook, which was just released this month, and its upcoming re-release in print, in July.   It is a story that Nsia Bah tells to Linnet and the Vam Pŷr, Dominique De’Paul, after tracking them down in London, in 1774.
“The story my grandfather’s father told him was passed down from all those who had gone before.  Many generations remembered so that we would never forget why we fight.”  The man’s voice was deep and melodic.
“The sun was low in the sky as the three hunters, Aadii, Bala, and Suma returned home with a gazelle on their backs.  As the sun dipped below the treetops, the hunters reached a part of the Savannah where the grasses grew tall.  Aadii took the gazelle from Bala, who had been shouldering the kill.  They laughed and spoke of the hunt, of their wives and children, of stories their elders spoke, as they waded through the towering grass toward the Marula trees on the far side.  The three hunters thought to camp and build a fire under the protection of the trees and return to the village the following morning.  But as they neared the outlying grove, wild beasts did set upon them.
A flash of white.  The rustling of movement.   A beast leapt from one of the Marula trees and landed on Bala who was behind the others.  He was taken under.  The grass came alive with his screams as Suma ran toward him.  Even as his death cries filled the dawning night, the edge of the tall grass began to flap in the direction of Aadii.  He cried out for Suma to come help him.  He had given Bala his spear when he had taken the burden of the gazelle.  Bala’s cries grew faint.  There was little Suma could do.  So he turned to help his friend.  Aadii dropped the gazelle, thinking that whatever it was attacking them would go for the fresh meat instead of him.  But it did not.
Suma ran toward Aadii, shrieking to scare the unseen animal as the bending sedge revealed its path.  He threw one of his spears, hoping for a good clean hit.  He missed and the beast kept coming.  As Suma reached Aadii he brought up his last spear, but the beast was faster and ripped Aadii from the sea of green spraying the young man’s blood across Suma’s face.  When the hunter opened his eyes…there was quiet.  Both of his friends were gone and the grass swayed ever so gently in a light, cool breeze.
Suma knew the beasts were still there.  He could not run, for if he did, he might run straight into them.  He had to wait for them to make their move.  The beasts were in no hurry to reveal themselves and time passed.  They were like no other animal the hunters had faced before.  There was a savage cunning in their attack.  Each advance brought their prey closer to them, instead of driving it away.  Suma was frightened.  He had just lost two brothers of the tribe in the blink of an eye and had scarcely seen a thing.  He began sweating despite the coolness of the night air.  He gripped the thin wooden shaft of his spear tighter as his eyes swept across the tops of the tranquil grass.  Any second now, they would make their move and he would know the face of death.
Again, it was sudden.  One after the other bound from their cover toward him.  In the light of the rising moon, as they glided through the air, he could now see his attackers as clear as day.  Their bodies shone with a white luminescence.  Their long arms reached out toward him, not like an animal, but like a man.  Their thick legs were tucked up to their chests, ready to pounce.  Their bodies were hairless and each had a mane of long black hair that flowed out from the tops of their heads.  They roared…and it thundered as if the heavens itself had cracked.  Suma had never seen men like these before, though he had heard tales of them.  Far to the east where the forest still remained thick against the encroaching desert, a tribe of celestial beings was said to reside.  They were known as Malaika.  But Suma had never heard tales of Malaika hunting men before.
When the beasts sprang from the brush, giving away their locations and the location they intended to be, Suma took off in the opposite direction away from them.  He was the fastest runner of the three hunters and had gained a good distance from the beasts by the time they landed and began pursuit.  But, alas, Suma was not as fast as the Malaika.  They soon gained on him.  He turned ‘round just as one of them leapt at him.  He brought his spear up and impaled the beast through the belly as it landed on top of him.  Both he and the injured Malaika went rolling through the grass, tumbling over one another.  Suma did not waste the advantage he had gained and quickly got to his feet and continued to run.  He ran as fast as he could.  He called on all the gods to carry him, to give him the legs of a cheetah and protect him from the white angels.  When he reached the edge of the grasslands he looked back.  The other Malaika had broken chase.  Perhaps to take care of their injured brother or perhaps because they had enough food from their hunt, or perhaps because they had made the point that they wanted to make.  Whatever the reason, Suma ran.
He ran all of the way back to the village and told everyone what he had seen and what had happened.  Our elders took counsel with Suma and it was agreed.  We would no longer hunt on the lands past the sea of grass.  There were good grounds to the south and in the plains over the western mountain.  We would hunt in those places more and perhaps the Malaika would leave us in peace as they had done until now.  But it was not to be.  Soon, the Malaika began raiding our villages and stealing our loved ones, taking them into the dark night never to be seen again.”
Nsia Bah leaned against the high back of the chair pausing in his tale to give his empty teacup to Laurel, the servant girl, and to take stock of his audience, the Vam Pŷr, Dominique De’Paul, and her consort, Linnet Pangbourn.  Linnet asked him how he had come to be a warrior in his tribe, and so the tale unfurled under the candlelight and hospitality of the Lady De’Paul.  He was sure that Dominique already knew this story.  She had been silent during their time together, letting her consort navigate the conversation.  Perhaps his great grandfather, Musa Bah, told it to her, or she had heard it from some other source.  Nsia had no doubt that she knew a great deal about his people and the beasts of which his tale told.  Her countenance spoke of a deeper wisdom.  Her eyes were calculating and he did not like it when she looked at him.  None the less, he was delighted to see that the young maid, Linnet, was quite taken by the tale and enjoyed his telling of it.
“For many generations,” Nsia concluded, “we were preyed upon by the Malaika at night and they became to be called the Kula Malaika, Shaytan Khalid.  Which in your tongue translates as cannibal angel, devil immortal.” He turned to the silent and composed Vam Pŷr and nodded.  “You know them as Omjadda, others to the North and East have called them Annunaki.”
“That is correct,” Dominique affirmed, finally breaking her lengthy quiet.
“They are our waking nightmare.”  Nsia said, looking down.  “So the responsibility fell to my family and the family of four others to stay behind and protect the village from the Kula Malaika so that our people could cross the mountain to live safely within the center of the great mother.  For over nine hundred generations we have defended ourselves and protected all that we love from these beasts that have hunted us, stolen our women, and sought to disrupt the evolution of Man.”
“Suma was your ancestor,” Linnet said realizing the breadth of the man’s lineage.
            Nsia Bah nodded.  “Yes.”
“Can I offer you another cup of tea?”
Linnet signaled Laurel to come remove her cup, uneaten biscuits, spoon, and saucer.  The tall, slender African, sharply dressed in a beige suit cut in the style of the Colonies, declined a second cup of the lady’s hospitality.
“Then do please tell me Mr. Bah,” inquired Linnet, speaking in a cordial tone, sitting up on the haunches of her gown, “how again you came to be putting a knife to my throat?”
It had happened earlier that night…
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I went to San Francisco and let a character inhabit my body for two weeks.  It was exhilarating, scary, insightful, brilliant, and psychotic.  I’m just thankful I wasn’t arrested.
What was one of the things that you found interesting while researching this or another book?
That the Annunaki were known to drink the sangreal fluid of virgins.  That’s just gross.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I can only write in the mornings.  I have to get out of bed when awoken, or it will be lost.  I have to have silence, because I hear, think, and feel every single thing that each of my characters experience.  I wind up taking breaks at the exact same times every day, when I’m writing.  They just naturally occur.  And I need to have a glass of tea with me at all times.  It helps to keep me hydrated, because I read everything aloud, and I get quite parched.
What can readers expect next from you?
Well, the re-release of the print copy of Blood Junky, with the new edit, in July, and an upcoming poetry chapbook.  I’m still working on book 3, Blood in Vein, of the One Blood series and hope to have that done very soon.  But it is kind of being delayed by talks with producing Love in Vein as a feature film.  The studio is leaning toward the third book in the series being released around the theatrical run of the film.  So, that’s up in the air.  Besides that, I’m editing Robert Kiser’s book, Havoc: Infection for its upcoming release through Crazy Duck Press, and I’m penning an extreme expose’ about some very personal things that have been going on lately.  It’s not vampire, or even horror related, though it is probably the most horrifying thing that that I will ever write.

An Interview with Morgan Crowe from Maggie Berkley's Morgan Crowe Trilogy

An Interview with Morgan Crowe
It's a bright beautiful day outside as I sit down at Fang-tastic Books, waiting for my interviewee, Morgan Crowe, heroine (or anti-heroine, depending on your view) of the Morgan Crowe trilogy, to arrive. When she finally does, she tosses a leather jacket on the table between us and grabs a chair. Morgan looks a bit tired. I wait until she reclines back into her chair, sipping on a grande Starbucks coffee and settles her intense green eyes on me. She stares at me for a moment as I wish her a good morning then clears her snorts. "In a matter of speaking." Using a foot, she snags another chair, pulling it closer, then places her boots on the seat as she leans her head back and closes her eyes. "So, you wanted to interview me. Go for it. I had a long night."I put my question cards in order and pick up a pen, studying Morgan. Tall, slender, with long black hair and pale skin, she is dressed in form fitting faded denim and a red tee stenciled with 'Bite Me' on the front. I feel intimidated, sitting across from her, as well as a bit jealous. Who wouldn't with someone that beautiful dominating the space. As if feeling the weight of my gaze, she cracks open an eye and stares back. "You gonna start?" I mutter a brief, "Sorry" then glance down at my long list of questions and turn on my tape recorder, sliding it toward the center of the table. She glances at her watch then takes another drink of her coffee. "Well, Morgan. I'm pleased to meet you. You are the central character  in the books by Maggie Berkley, called the Morgan Crowe trilogy. Book 1: Enter the Night, introduced you to readers and we got a glimpse into the life you were leading during your banishment from the," I peek at my notes, "Mor'sin'dar Court. It was said you killed an entire family that was considered nobility in the Courts.""I was pissed off.""And so you were banished by King Silvas." I nod. "Okay." I started tapping my pen on the desk until I caught the annoyed look she shot me. "I also understand that the Queen of the Mor'sin'dar hates you, but no one really understands why. Care to elaborate?" I took her silence as a no. "Well, in Enter the Night the readers are introduced to three men who become an integral part of the Morgan Crowe story. Malachi, the Werepanther and also Queen Moriethe's assassin. Ty Bucannon the Werewolf, who we don't his name until book 2 and High Lord Requiem, who has more than a passing interest in you. How do you deal with so much male attention?""I ignore it. I'm not here as their plaything. I have a job to do, so I do it. Being an assassin is a fulltime gig and not something you can take lightly, especially when Moriethe sends her bitch patrol after you.""Which brings me to my next question. You knew Malachi belonged to Queen Moriethe so why let him into your life, and bed, into the first place?""Stupidity. And I was horny." she shrugs. "You should see the abs on the guy."I could imagine but shoved the mental picture aside to continue the interview. "But because of him you lost two close friends. How did it make you feel to know you were a dupe a game Queen Moriethe was playing with you and because of that your friends died? I understand you were also blamed with the death of King Silvas."Morgan's body stilled, reminding me of a show I watched in snakes, where a cobra froze before striking it's victim. Maybe I shouldn't have said that. Turning her head slowly to face me, she spoke in a very calm, soft voice. "We're not going to talk about that."I quickly agreed and went on to my next question. "The readers also found out that you discovered that you had a destiny, via the Cauldron Witch, who you visited when you snuck back into Mor'sin'dar.""I was trying to find out the truth about Silvas' death. My King had to have been murdered by someone close to him.""Did you find anything interesting?""Read the book.""Ah, okay. So, in book 2, Behind the Throne, you seek the help from the daughter of Tibault, King of the Sin'din'dar Court, a rival of the original King you worked for. Bet that didn't go over very well.""Vivienne was happy to see me.""And Ty," I added, "for he shows up in this story too, but this time he has a bigger role.""He's Viv's brother-in-law. She asked him to guard me since I was sasquatch at the time."I picked up a card and read it quickly. "Yes, you were quite heavily pregnant, with twins, right?"Morgan nodded. "Sierra and Thalos.""Malachi is the father." Morgan shrugged."And you and Ty become close in this story. In fact, he's around you for most of the time.""Kid's got a crush. He helped me out until the kids were born." Morgan shrugged again, but this time her face softened a bit before settling once more into its more expressionless visage. "He was a good respite from the others.""Others, being...""The other Sidhe who were also at Viv's. The asshole, Prince Khelvan was visiting at the time and brought his guard.""And, of course, none of you got a long." I smiled slightly. I could see where this was going."As if. Numb nuts couldn't get the hint that he wasn't wanted." Morgan muttered under her breath.I picked up another card. "Prince Khelvan is Queen Moriethe and King Silvas' middle son. Why was he there? Did he know you were coming and hoped to capture you?"Morgan snorted as she tossed her coffee into a nearby garbage can. "Dumb ass can't find his way out of a paper bag, much less find me.  No, he was there trying to woo Vivienne. The two had a romance a long time ago and he thought he could convince her to leave her husband." She chuckled. "Idiot.""But trouble soon finds you anyway for Vivienne is kidnapped by your enemies."A flicker of irritation crosses Morgan's face but she answers. "I have to work with Khelvan to rescue her. We do but Viv was hurt bad and comatose.""Which leads us into book 3: Out of the Shadowedlands. If anything, things get worse for you. Dealing with the after effect of Vivienne's kidnapping, trying to be a mother while your ex and the Queen are after you, Lord Requiem becomes more active (within the Court) in your quest, Ty getting a girlfriend..."Morgan makes a face at that."And having to face that destiny, the one you were apparently not dealing with throughout the whole story.""There's a lot going on behind the scenes that's a bit...personal. I was confronted for not doing what I was supposed to and in the end," she shrugs, "I did what I had to. All's good in the world, so sue me if I took some time for myself.""You mean by running away." That comment earned me a glare. "It's the truth. I don't blame you. You went out of your way to help others when they needed it, but when it was your time to rely on someone else they all were too busy. I'd be pissed too. It's a bit overwhelming. Your King was dead, the Queen and a few others wanted you dead, your best friend was in a coma, and you were getting blamed for everything that was wrong in life. I'd runaway too."Morgan looked at her feet and was quiet for a few moments. "But I got my revenge.""So did you get the happy ending you want?"Tilting her head slightly, she looked at me from the corner of her eyes. "You'll have to read the books."

Out of the ShadowedLandsBook Three of the Morgan Crowe trilogy Maggie Berkley

A storm is brewing in the Dark Courts and her name is Death.
Tired of broken promises and betrayal, Morgan Crowe takes matters into her own hand and carves a destructive path through the maze of political intrigue the Dark Queen of the Mor'sin'dar had created. After rescuing her friend Vivienne from the dungeons of UnderArch, Morgan returns home to discover her son missing, taken by the man she had once given her heart to. Seeking help to retrieve him she finds those she served unwilling to give assistance and realizes that loyalty is not always a two way street. Tired of being used by those she thought of as allies and hunted by those she knows are enemies, Morgan is determined to end the game she had been unwillingly pulled in to and strikes out in fury at everyone around her.
But when her past finally catches up with her and threatens the lives of those she loves, Morgan knows it's time to take a stand. Charged by her dead King to bring justice to him and the throne and still haunted by the prophecy given to her about the future, she must make a decision that could change the ShadowedLands and those who live within its borders forever. With the help of the mysterious Lord Requiem and the young Werewolf Ty, Morgan steps forward to bring a true King to the Ebon Throne and to remove the threat to her and those she loves. Will she give into her destructive nature or will she finally step into the destiny she was born for?

About the Author:
A long time fan of dark fantasy with a touch of romance and horror, Maggie Berkley grew up in a world all her own, one she created as a teenager during her long times of parental lock down due to a rebellious nature. As a youth she created stories and plays for her friends to act out for anyone willing (and at times unwilling) to watch and as time went by drew upon her love of fantasy and horror to write longer stories and fan fiction. Due to the encouragement of friends and family she decided rather than keep her stories for herself she would publish and in doing so created different worlds to feature her vast imagination.
Maggie currently lives in Portland, Oregon, home of the 'Keep Oregon Weird' campaign. She shares her life and heart with her husband of many years, and lives in a home filled with humor and insane pets (a goofy Rotten Ridge who thinks he's a human, and two cats that rule their lives with an iron claw). Much to her surprise and dismay, her son has finally escaped their clutches and is currently the responsibility of the United States Air Force.

Why Mafia Vampires?- Blood Street by Carl Alves

I’ve always been a big fan of Mafia movies and fiction.  Mario Puzo is perhaps my favorite writer outside of the fantasy and horror genres.  Being a horror and fantasy writer, with some sci-fi mixed in here and there, I wasn’t sure how I would ever be able to write a book featuring mobsters.  Although organized crime isn’t as organized and powerful as it used to be (at least in Philadelphia where the novel takes place), it still remains a fascinating subject for me.  The Mafia is all about loyalty, family, revenge; an organization that operates in the shadows with a code of conduct that doesn’t exist in the rest of the society.  To rise in their organization makes you a Man of Honor.  Their tactics are heavy-handed and brutal.  They write their own rules, and ignore the ones created by society.
I am also a big fan of vampire movies and fiction, but vampires have been done and done again, and done again some more to the point where we have to endure sparkly vampires that drip with angst and fawn over similarly angst-filled teenaged girls for reasons that completely escape me.  I wanted to bring vampire fiction back to where it should be.  Vampires are vicious killers, not romantic anti-heroes.  Vampires are not your friend.  They would kill you as soon as blink an eye.  Like the Mafia, lives in the shadows in order to survive.  They also have a code of conduct and are built around a family structure.
What sparked this novel was the combustible combination these two groups, similar in some ways yet still disparate in many other ways, could create.  What would happen if an organized crime syndicate locked horns with a brood of vampires?  Throw in the FBI into the mix and anything can happen.  The result is the Wild West in the streets of Philadelphia.  Writing this novel was good fun, something I hope resonates with the readers.

The Man Behind the Fangs Guest Blog and Giveaway with Tiffany Allee

It’s no secret that I love vampires. I love pretty much any and all types of paranormal creatures to varying degrees and in different kinds of ways. And to be honest, I am a little crazy about worldbuilding and using lots of different types of magic and creatures in my books. So when it came to writing a book geared toward Entangled Publishing’s new Covet imprint, which is a line that emphasizes the romance story over the worldbuilding, it was quite a challenge for me, but a fun one!
Most of my focus moved to the characters. Sure there are some quirky side characters, and a heroine who is (in my opinion) quite interesting on her own, but a lot of the story focuses on the main supernatural character, a vampire named Noah. He’s also the smexy love interest.
Noah is a two hundred year old vampire who spent much of his early vampire life fighting in a hidden war between vampire factions. But the war is over (mostly), and now Noah must find his place in a world filled mainly with humans. Noah is very human in a lot of ways. He has loved and lost, he runs a small company out of his home, and he yearns for Alice, his next door neighbor—although he prefers to pretend he doesn’t.
When Noah is forced to share a cabin on a cruise ship with Alice, he’s also forced to realize that he hasn’t really been living a full life. And that he wants things he feels like he shouldn’t. Noah is quite the vampire, but that is a secret. So in this book, he has to rely on his human side to win over the heroine. Luckily, Noah’s vampire traits are secondary to his charm, protectiveness, and good heart.
It also probably doesn’t hurt that he’s quite the hottie. ;-)

When you read a book with a supernatural love interest, do you find yourself falling for the tough supernatural creature, or the man behind the powers?

Book Description:
Alice Shepard needs one thing: a date for her sister's wedding. And not just any date. A hunk who will make her fiancé rue the day he left her for her best friend. Her drop-dead gorgeous neighbor fits the bill—even if he is a bit quirky and never comes out during the day—and Alice has downed just enough appletinis to ask him. But she makes it quite clear that there will be no funny business.
Spending a week on a cruise ship full of humans while sleeping close to his sexy next-door neighbor sounds like a helluva bad idea to vampire Noah Thorpe. But his friends need time to get him out of a shotgun wedding—a vampire bonding that will tie his fate to a female vampire he's never met. And Alice's offer comes at just the right time.
What could possibly go wrong?

Interview with Danielle DeVor

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?

I’ve always been interested in vampires. I think it started when I was about three and had an obsession with bats. So, writing fantasy and horror was kind of organic.

What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?

I think it’s that you can empathize with them. How can you not feel for a creature that lives so long that he or she watches everyone they love and care about die because not everyone can handle the life of a vampire?

What inspired you to write this book?

People had been telling me for years that I should write a vampire book because I was always talking about them or watching movies, so finally, Mathias popped into my head in a tough situation, and my brain jumped to vampires as the answer.

Please tell us about your latest release.

Tail of the Devil is about a street kid, Mathias, who gets turned into a vampire after being gunned down in a drive-by shooting. His problems don’t end there though. The vampire world believes he is the reincarnation of their long lost king, and after having a bad encounter with the current queen, things don’t seem so black and white anymore.

Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?

I look though baby books for names that suit my characters in both meaning and sound. Time period or region is in the back of my mind, but the main focal point is if the name fits the character.

Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?

Vlad. It was hard to make a historical figure as well as a figure already used in lots of vampire things different.

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?

Nossy is a blast. It is easy to give to him all the orneriness that I don’t get the chance to act on.

Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?

I’m a total pantser, so the characters flow with the story, but some characters I end up thinking about before I write the book.

What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?

The scene of Mathias meeting Nic, the evil sorcerer, is one of my favorites. He was so slimy and easy to write.

Basically, Mathias goes to see Nic with his street friend, Lucretia. Lucretia introduces Nic as someone who can do things to help- for a price.

Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?

While researching the book I have coming out in October by Crescent Moon Press, Sorrow’s Point, I found out that every major religion has some sort of exorcism rite.

What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?

I worked with a wooden practice sword a friend owns to get the feel of it to help with the battle scene.

Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?

Vampire exist alongside us, but their world is separate from ours unless they want or need something from us.

Their official documents are still written in Latin, they have their own form of magic called “blinking” and the rules of their government are very harsh.

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?

I’m just getting started on writing the second book in the series, but each book will be able to be read alone without having something that would lead the reader to be completely lost.

Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?

Mathias makes lists to keep track of things- this is a total me thing. If I don’t write it down, I forget it.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?

I do, but the one thing that seems to work for me is having a deadline in my head that I need to have the book done by. Doing that forces me to keep writing, even if it is something I have to change later.

Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?

I have to write longhand on steno pads with sparkly gel pens. If I don’t use the steno pads or the pens, the words just don’t come.

Do you write in different genres?

So far, YA Fantasy, Adult Fantasy, Horror, YA Thriller, and YA Paranormal Romance.

Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?

I tend to do one book at a time, so it is easy to change because I’m thinking differently for each book.

When did you consider yourself a writer?

When I got my first book contract

What are your guilty pleasures in life?

Chocolate

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?

I play the harp.

What was the last amazing book you read?

Courting Greta by Ramsey Hootman

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?

The sofa in my living room

What can readers expect next from you?

My next book comes out October 15, 2013. Sorrow’s Point is an adult fantasy about a defrocked priest who ends up doing an exorcism on a six-year-old girl.

Where can readers find you on the web?

If Mathias thought being homeless sucked, being a vampire is worse. The vampires who transformed him believe he is the reincarnation of an ancient king. They expect him to quit swearing, use a napkin, and play by their weird, ancient rules. Screw that.

But after the reigning queen assaults Mathias, he has visions of a past life in which he was that king. Turns out the current queen killed him then, and wants to kill him again. He’d better grow up fast, because if he doesn’t his second life may be shorter than his first.

Twenty-two-year-old Beatrice Stevens lives to dance. Two years ago she walked in on the picture of horror: after stabbing her mom 34 times, her father killed himself. She found his corpse still clutching at her mom’s, determined not to let go of her even in death. Now Beatrice freaks out if she’s hugged, loomed over or receives attention from daddy-type guys. Unless she’s dancing—the one thing that feeds her soul and saves her time after time.

Anthony Gowl wants Beatrice from the moment she bumps her adorable nose into his chest. That desire turns into a burning need after he sees her dance. Book Description:
German-occupied Brussels, Belgium, April 1915
Judith Goddard is hiding in plain sight. A dual citizen with family ties to Belgian royalty and the British military, she works as a Red Cross nurse in a German hospital, learning what she can, ever fearful her true allegiance will be discovered.British Expeditionary Force Captain Michael Lawrence is on a mission to rescue the daughter of his mentor. He doesn't expect to find a strong beautiful woman in place of the naïve girl whose love he rejected years earlier.
Jude is shocked when Michael turns up in her hospital, wounded and in German uniform. Though he broke her heart, she agrees to flee Belgium with him—she has information about an imminent attack that she must deliver to the British War Office, before it's too late.
Posing as a married couple, Jude and Michael journey to the border, in constant danger of discovery—and of giving in to their mutual passion…
About the Author:
Julie Rowe’s first career as a medical lab technologist in Canada took her to the North West Territories and northern Alberta, where she still resides. She loves to include medical details in her romance novels, but admits she’ll never be able to write about all her medical experiences because, “No one would believe them!”. In addition to writing contemporary and historical medical romance, and fun romantic suspense for Entangled Publishing and Carina Press, Julie has a short story in the Mammoth Book of Medical Romance.
Her book SAVING THE RIFLEMAN (WAR GIRLS) won the novella category of the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence. Her writing has also appeared in several magazines such as Today’s Parent, Reader’s Digest (Canada), and Canadian Living.
