Review Damn Him to Hell by Jamie Quaid

Damn Him to Hell Damn Him to Hell by Jamie Quaid
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fabulous new spin on urban fantasy.

After spotting this book for review on Edelweiss, I requested it and ordered book one from the library so I could read them in order.

I was hooked from the first page of Boyfriend from Hell and devoured it so I could move on to book 2.

Quirky, different, and fun this series fit into the urban fantasy genre perfectly even without a vampire or werewolf in sight.

I read them back to back and totally fell in love with this series, the characters and The Zone.

Love, love, loved it. I can't wait for book 3.

Hex and the Single Witch Vehicle City Vampires Book OneBy Roxanne Rhoads
Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team (aka the P.I.T. Crew)

It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.

The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone.
Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.

Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.

Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

Hanna Peach

May 31, 2013
Format: E-book

Genre: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal

Length: ~87,000 words

Book Description:

"Fans of The Mortal Instruments [by Cassandra Clare] will love this!"
After escaping from the Hollows and the Michaelea lightwarriors, Jordan takes Alyx and Israel to Aradale, a secret Rogue community, where they appear to be safe − for now. But did they bring the enemy with them? “Mini”, the strange and speechless young girl they rescued from the Hollows, is not as she seems. Why was Elder Michael keeping her locked up? What is she hiding?
Alyx and Israel are driven further apart as Israel continues to obsess over making Adere human and Alyx hides two secrets from him: that he may be part-demon and that she may be carrying his child, a tri-blood keye that can be used to unlock Hell.
Out in the mortal cities, pieces of Black Stone, the only material that can disrupt the angels’ healing abilities, continue to be stolen to make weapons for Samyara’s dark army. Alyx and her friends must stop them, but this means infiltrating holy and guarded places to steal the Black Stone − a monastery in remote China, a mosque in Saudi Arabia, an art gallery in Florence and a cathedral in Peru.
Can they win this deadly race against the Darkened?

About the Author Hanna Peach

“I write about fantastical things, especially creatures with fangs, magic or wings.
I want to tell you tales that will rip away the glamor from your life, keep you running and fighting and gasping long past the devil’s hour and maybe, just maybe, reality will look a little bit different when you return.
Sit with me around this witchlight. Let me tell you a story.”
At the beginning of 2013, Hanna left her "respectable" career, packed up her life and sold everything except for what fit in a suitcase to be a full-time writer and go "gypsy-ing" across Europe. Even she thinks that she is a little crazy sometimes.
Hanna Peach is the author of Angelfire, book 1 of the Dark Angel series. Angelstone, (Dark Angel #2) is due for publication on 31 May 2013 and Angelsong (Dark Angel #3) is due late 2013.

Excerpt 1
“So,” Israel said, “could I learn to defend myself against your magics?”
“Interesting.” Jordan made a small noise in his throat. “Could a mortal raise a defense against the magics?” Jordan began to pace. “Your only option against the elemental magics – fire, water, earth, air – is just to get the hell out of the way. But the Seraphim don’t need magics to defend themselves against mental magic attacks. DreamWalker and MemorySong can be deflected by using the defender’s own will, his or her inner power... theoretically, if a mortal’s mind was strong enough, they may be able to learn to raise their mental defenses in the same way.”
It sounded like this Rogue was issuing a challenge. “I’ll do it.” Bring it, Rogue-boy. “What do you want me to do?”
Jordan stopped pacing and spun so that he was facing Israel. Jordan looked at Israel in silence for long enough that Israel began to feel uncomfortable. There was almost a leer to Jordan’s stare. The side of Jordan’s lip tilted up. “Are you asking for my help, mortal?”
This cocky prick was going to make him say it. Israel grumbled a little before acquiescing. “Yes, Rogue, I am asking for your help.”
Jordan’s face broke out into a grin. Israel didn’t have a good feeling about this.
“On the basis that I think that this will be… an interesting experiment, I agree to help you.”
“Great.”
“On one condition.”
Of course there had to be a condition. “Which is?”
Jordan pursed his lips and stepped up to Israel. This Rogue was a few inches shorter than Israel, but he had this thing about him that made him seem bigger, taller, than he actually was. Israel lifted his chin higher.
“Which is?” Israel repeated. He wasn’t intimidated by this Rogue, magics or not.
“You’ll do exactly as I say, when I say it.”
“But—”
“And no arguing with me.”
“You said one condition.”
Jordan narrowed his eyes. “And no arguing with me.”
Israel growled deep in his throat. “Fine. I accept your conditions.”

Interview with Laila Blake

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?

Of course, thank you for having me on your blog!
I’m a pretty nerdy person; I love getting into things and obsessing about them – music, books, science, ideas – it’s probably a good breeding ground for writers. I studied Applied Linguistics and I’m a translator and sometimes English teacher as my day job, and I live in a small apartment in Cologne/Germany with a little cat called Nookie. As for the genre – I’ve always liked fantasy realms as escapism, but I also love supernatural creatures. I didn’t want to write urban fantasy because there are certain genre expectations there that I simply don’t want to write about but playing with were-wolves and fae in a medieval setting is just highly enjoyable to me.
What inspired you to write this book?
Apart from the genre, I really wanted to write about a complicated heroine in By the Light of the Moon. I’m a feminist and I am all for strong female leads but I am also a human being and as such, I often feel not quite represented by hard-core, sassy heroines that are so completely unlike me or my friends and the people I admire. I wanted to create a character who doesn’t always feel strong, who has character and backbone but who also doubts herself and struggles with issues that make it very hard for her to fit in. I feel like that describes a lot of young women and readers and I wanted to write about that kind of strength – the strength to be who you are in spite of all that.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
It’s very complicated, much like your question implies. I would say that the most important aspect in the eventual choice has to do with melody and flow of the sound. It has to feel like the character to me.
Especially with this book, I also tried to give certain ethnic and family patterns to naming. And yes, in the very end, I check what the name actually means – and if it is too weird I sometimes change it.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Of course. I think that’s quite normal – you have characters that are basically a safe bet. These are characters that you know inside out, and you know what they say and how they react in any given circumstances. Both Moira and Owain are like that for me.And then there are characters that are more mysterious, less predictable – like Maeve or Brock. They are harder to write but very rewarding in a different way because they can surprise you like crazy.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I don’t really believe in lists when it comes to characters – I have lists for all kinds of things but characters are a very organic construct for me. Mostly it just emerges from their back-story, their looks, their friends, their role in the story. Sometimes I only realize a character’s trait by the end of the book because I look back on the way they behaved through-out. So I’d say it’s a mixture – I give them some planning, a broad outline, a story, a premise and then I let them develop naturally.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series?
Word-building is definitely something that keeps drawing to me towards speculative fiction. I have been coming up with worlds and societies ever since I was a child and I love doing it.For this series, I didn’t want to go over-board. It is definitely a romance, so I didn’t want the world to overshadow that and take away too much time. So I relied on some more or less excepted genre tropes – your typical AU medieval kingdom with lords that rule over different fiefs. As a twist, I added two different races into the story – Fae, who stay mysterious throughout the first book because they are all but forgotten and thought story rather than real thing, and Blaidyn a kind of were-wolf race that was once created by the fae and now lives at the fringes of human society. Blaidyn are covered in prejudice and they have a complicated history with both humans and fae – which comes to haunt the male protagonist in the book. Mostly, I believe in world-building that supports the story rather than world-building first and then putting a story into that verse.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Oh writer’s block. I think everybody does – although I have to admit I try to stay away from calling it that, just because I find that not very helpful. That makes it sound like a medical condition or something we just have to accept – but writing is a job for me, it is what I want to do with my life. And I don’t get translator’s block, or teacher’s block. With those, it’s just called… feeling a bit lazy or unfocussed. I feel like it’s the same with writer’s block. And when I think of it as feeling a little bit lazy or unfocussed, then I can combat those feelings much more easily. Sometimes it’s just a matter of giving myself the day off.
Sometimes I need to clear my head with a nice walk outside or an hour of yoga. Sometimes, I just need to read some great book for half an hour until my head gets into the right place to expel my ideas in well-formed sentences. And when nothing works? Well, then I full-screen a writing doc, set a timer and force myself to write for half an hour. Even if it sucks, no internet clicking, no distraction, no food until I have written at least that much and over time the writer’s block goes away. Maybe not that day or the next, but it goes away.
Do you write in different genres?
Definitely. I have yet to feel the impulse to settle down in anything. It might not be the best idea career-wise but when I have written fantasy for a while, I get this really huge hankering for contemporary. Or when I’ve spent some time writing third person present, I just need to work on something in first person. I just like balance.
In the last few months, I’ve written or co-written paranormal fantasy, erotica, new adult dystopian, fairytale and contemporary YA.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
There are certain tv shows that I am terribly addicted to – and can rewatch to infinity. At the moment, the very worst is Game of Thrones, but also Parks and Rec, Doctor Who, Downton Abbey and the like. I get very emotionally invested. I also have a very real imaginary relationship with John Krasinski ;). Really, I’m pretty average in my guilty pleasures. Also: soda and pinterest.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I really love music. I can spend a whole afternoon and evening on bandcamp searching through indie artists and getting ridiculously excited at my finds. I also have two guitars – one signed by my favourite signer song-writer and I sometimes practice and write silly songs ;). Especially recently, though, writing has very much taken over my life and pushed most other things out – but I’m really into photography and graphic design even though currently that is almost completely limited to appreciating it and getting inspired by it rather than doing much of it myself.
What was the last amazing book you read?
The last book that really blew me away was 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami – I have a thing for magical realism and strangeness.
What can readers expect next from you?
The next thing lined up is obviously the next book in the Lakeside Series, the sequel to By the Light of the Moon. My publisher’s final decision pending, it is called A Taste of Winter and it follows the protagonists away from the sheltered castle into the wilderness where they actually have to work on their relationship and have to face some realities that they hadn’t considered in the first book.
I also have a few erotic short-stories in upcoming anthologies, starting with Ladylit’s Anything She Wants, edited by Harper Bliss, and a Cleis Press anthology about occupational fantasies, edited by Alison Tyler.
Two other co-written novels are currently in the editing stage – one erotic romance, one NA dystopian. So these are at the horizon as well and I’m currently working on an erotic novella by myself as well as avidly planning a YA contemporary one.
Where can readers find you on the web?
Everywhere! Well, that is the goal at least – I’m really getting into google+ right now. The easiest way to find them all is to just check out my homepage @ www.lailablake.com. It links to everything.
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Sure, I would love to.  This is from the fourth chapter of By the Light of the Moon (Lakeside #1).

Moira didn’t bother with shoes; they would be too loud, and this time, she had to get past the wolf, too. She was too desperate to feel the night wind on her face and the cool earth under feet to truly worry about it. Squeezing herself through her door, she managed to close it with softest click and exhaled a sigh of relief before she crept along the hallways, barely allowing herself to breathe. The castle was dark but she knew every loose stone, every carpet and she carefully set one foot before the other, toes first and then she quietly let the rest of her foot follow. The castle was still absolutely silent; she checked every few steps, stopping and holding her breath. Still not a sound anywhere. The stairs were trickier, but she knew the ones that squeaked and how to squeeze herself against the wall and walk so close to where the boards where fixed in the stone that they had no place to bend and creak. Even Blaidyn had to sleep; they were alive, weren’t they? Every creature alive slept and all she had to do was creep quietly enough not to rouse him.She was clinging to the wall, fingertips hooked into the narrow gaps between the stones, carefully setting one foot onto the landing and keeping herself from exhaling a deep breath. She wouldn’t make it past the portcullis but there were other ways, smaller, secret ways in and out of the castle and the wolf wasn’t likely to know any of them. She just had to reach the closest one, down by the kitchens. It wasn’t that far, just a little further and she would finally be able to breathe deeply, to run, to scream if she felt like it.“My lady.” A voice suddenly came out of the darkness and Moira uttered an involuntary squeak before she could slap her hand over her mouth. She furtively looked into the direction she had perceived the voice to come from. For a moment, she was sure she saw two eyes glowing eerily in the dark; they made her step back, her heart hammering rapidly in her chest. Then she heard the soft rasp of a match against wood and a moment later saw a tiny flame at the end of a sliver of wood held in large hands, which brought it to a candle.“There’s no need to be afraid, milady,” the voice said again and now that he lifted the candle to his face, she recognized the Blaidyn. She should have known, she wanted to scold herself, scaring like a little girl. Of course it was the wolf, her own personal prison guard.“How long have you been standing there?” she demanded, trying to sound like his superior. Her voice was croaky and still shaking, and she wrapped her arms protectively around her torso. He didn’t look cruel but the candlelight cast a strange glow on his features that wasn’t inspiring trust or safety, either.“A few minutes, milady,” he answered truthfully. “Since you entered the hallway.”Her mouth opened and then she closed it again. She wanted to be angry and indignant but in grasping for the emotion through the fog of fright, she came up with embarrassment, of all things. He had heard her slowly, carefully creeping down the long carpeted hallway, holding her breath almost the entire time, taking minutes for a distance usually crossed in less than one. And he had stood there, waiting, knowing exactly what she was up to. The very idea made her neck itch enough to press her hand against it as she tried to make out his features again from lowered lashes.“Are you going to stop me?” she finally asked into the silence.“That depends, milady.”
By the Light of the MoonBy the Light of the MoonLaila Blake

Withdrawn and with a reputation for her strange, eccentric ways, young Lady Moira Rochmond is old to be unwed. Rumors say, she has been seen barefoot in the orchard, is awake all night in moon-struck rambles and sleeps all day. Some will even claim her ghostly pallor and aloof manner are signs of illness, of a curse or insanity. The hopes of the peaceful succession to her father’s fief lie in an advantageous marriage. Moira, however, has a hard time attracting suitors. When one does show interest, her family pushes for a decision.Almost resigned to the fact that she has no choice but to play the part she has been given in life, Moira is faced with Owain. A member of the mysterious Blaidyn creatures and a new guard in her father’s castle, specifically tasked to keep her safe. He is different from other people she knows and when one night under the full moon, she makes the acquaintance of the wolf who shares Owain’s soul, she starts to trust him and seek his presence. As he becomes one of the few individuals who doesn’t make her want to hide and retreat, she wants to learn more about him and they grow closer until they share a kiss one night under the moon.Faced with feelings and desires that overthrow everything she thought she knew about herself, Moira knows non-the-less that they have to be kept utterly secret. However much they try, though, they continue to be drawn to each other until one night, Owain discovers something about Moira that shakes him to core.  www.lakeside-series.com Add to your Goodreads ListPurchase on Amazon US

Casting the Characters in Blood Lust

Casting Blood Lust
In an interview the other day, I was asked who I would want to play the lead in my paranormal romance, Blood Lust. It might sound silly, but I was surprised by the question. I hadn’t given a single thought to who I would want to play my characters in a Hollywood adaptation. In fact, maybe I’d be better off not putting any thought into it at all!
It’s become a well-known fact now that Stephenie Meyer’s first choice for Bella Swan was Emily Browning, who looks nothing like Kristen Stewart.
If someday my books are made into movies, I’d hate to have built up the characters’ physical appearances in my mind to the point where I can’t accept someone else in the role. I’m also a bit reluctant to spoil anyone’s personal ideas of what my characters look like. So before I start discussing who should play the three main characters in Blood Lust, let me iterate that these characters can look like whoever you want. Don’t feel like my personal vision of their physical appearances hold any sway whatsoever over your own mental image of them.
1. Eve Samuels – Teresa Palmer (pic 1)
Eve is the main character in Blood Lust. She’s an alpha wolf, so she needs to have a believable, authoritative presence. But she also needs to be beautiful in a girl-next-door kind of way. Australian actress Teresa Palmer fits the bill perfectly, and I say that only because I saw her in the film adaptation of Warm Bodies and truly adored her performance. When she was shooting zombies, it was totally believable. This girl is Eve Samuels, no doubt about it.

2. Jericho – Gabriel Garko (pic 2)
Jericho is the mysterious vampire who bewitches Eve shortly before she is turned into a werewolf. Their bond endures after her transformation, despite their status as mortal enemies. He is sexy, enigmatic and absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. Hello, Gabriel Garko! You are my perfect Jericho! Gabriel actually isn’t quite the right age for the role, but he does look much younger than he is, and I think if he could assume a somewhat ambiguous accent, he’d melt hearts as Jericho.

3. Max Good Crow – Adam Beach(pic 3)
Okay, this is a real stretch. Adam Beach is forty- far too old to portray twenty-nine-year-old Max. But it’s my fantasy cast, and I honestly can’t think of anyone else who would be more suited to this role. I still found him sexy in Cowboys and Aliens, so Adam Beach is at the top of my list for Max Good Crow, who is the town doctor and Eve’s beta werewolf.

Have you read Blood Lust? Who do you think the characters look like?

 About the Author:
I first discovered the world of self-publishing in February 2011, when my 7-month-old son was admitted to the hospital with severe respiratory issues. During his stay in the hospital, I tried to keep us both entertained by downloading several books on my Kindle and reading them out loud.                                         I read a number of self-published books and realized that I had an opportunity to share my writings with the world. I soon decided to quit my full-time job in the insurance and financial services industry, stay home with my son and write. It was the best decision I've ever made. My son's health has improved drastically, and I've never been happier.
I prefer to read and write YA fantasy, romance, and paranormal romance. The next book in my Rapid City Wolves series, “Blood Oath,” will be released for Amazon Kindle on June 1, 2013.

Tee Morris
Tee Morris began his writing career with his 2002 historical epic fantasy, MOREVI The Chronicles of Rafe & Askana. In 2005 Tee took MOREVI into the then-unknown podosphere, making his novel the first book podcast in its entirety.
That experience led to the founding of Podiobooks.com and collaborating with Evo Terra and Chuck Tomasi on Podcasting for Dummies and its follow-up, Expert Podcasting Practices for Dummies.
He won acclaim and accolades for his cross-genre fantasy-detective Billibub Baddings Mysteries, the podcast of The Case of the Singing Swordwinning him the 2008 Parsec Award for Best Audio Drama. Along with those titles, Tee has written articles and short stories for BenBella Books’s Farscape Forever: Sex, Drugs, and Killer Muppets, the podcast anthology VOICES: New Media Fiction, BenBella Books’ So Say We All: Collected Thoughts and Opinions of Battlestar Galactica, and Dragon Moon Press’ Podthology: The Pod Complex.
Tee bought all these skills to the award-winning Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series which he wrote with his wife, Pip Ballantine. When he is not writing, Tee enjoys life in Virginia alongside Philippa Ballantine, his daughter, and three cats.

Right now Pip and Tee are also running a Kickstarter for a brand new anthology and a roleplaying game set in the world of the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences.

Interview with Tracy Lane

What inspired you to write this book?
I loved to read when I was a young girl. I have always wanted to create the worlds I lived in when I was reading a story. In High School I use to write short stories and show my friends. I never submitted anything because I thought I was not good enough to get published.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
All my characters except Tank have been named after people in my life. Jake Weir was named after two people who have passed.  Frank is named after Frank Stallone because I used his personality and it made it easier to connect while writing him.  Jakes mother Stephanie is named after a friend of mine and his father Dennis is named after a boyfriend from 20 years ago that had a huge impact on my life.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
My favorite scene would be chapter four.  I made the live world seem dead and the dead world really alive. I am most proud of that scene.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I traveled to Tombstone Arizona when the ghost hunters were taping. At the time I did not realize it would be used as research, but I did fall back on it at times.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I had a hard time getting this story down on paper. I was frustrated and wanted to give up. I don’t remember where but I saw that if you take 5 to 10 minutes a day to write just one page and fine tune it, you could end up with a book a year. So at 5am every morning after my coffee was done I’d sit at the computer and would write one page and made sure it was pretty decent before I saved it. That process worked like a charm for me!  Before I knew it I could do a few pages each day.

When did you consider yourself a writer?
When I actually had my contract from a publisher in hand. Until that point I wasn’t sure I was actually a writer.
What was the last amazing book you read?
I would have to say the Hunger Game series. I was totally sucked in and could see myself as Katniss.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I love lounging on the couch while reading. I either read sitting up wrapped up in a blanket or laying down propped up on pillows. It’s like Heaven to me.
What can readers expect next from you?
I am now writing a book called Entwined Courage. It is about a planet where dark and light mages rule together to keep the balance. But a dark mage decides he should be the only ruler and has his squire steal the source of power, an orb. The squire gets second thoughts about it and hides it in a young girls knapsack that is visiting. When the dark mage finds out he goes after the girl and the squire gets to her first and they run to keep the orb safe. They have quite a few adventures, some that don’t even pertain to the orb. I am really excited about this book.

Book Description:
Jake Weir, while on the set of his parents ghost hunting TV show, agrees to help a ghost investigate a 61 year-old murder.
Jake Weir is not like the other kids in Dusk, North Carolina. Then again, Dusk, North Carolina is not like other cities. Known as one of the most haunted cities in America, behind Salem, Massachusetts and New Orleans, Louisiana, Dusk is ground zero for Jake's ghost hunting parents.
The Weir family has arrived in Dusk eager to scope out some of the town's 127 reported "paranormal properties," which just happens to be the name of their own ghost hunting show: Paranormal Properties. What Jake doesn't know, and what his parents could never imagine, is that Jake can see ghosts! And hear them. And talk back to them! This talent comes in handy when he runs into Dusk's oldest, most famous ghost: one Frank Barrone, a one-time lounge singer made famous by his booze-soaked ballad, "Barroom Eyes."
Frank was gunned down by a local mobster in 1951 and has been searching for his killer ever since. When he learns that Jake can see and hear him, Frank makes young Jake a deal: if Jake will help Frank find his killer, Frank will help his parents find a ghost to film for their upcoming Halloween Special on Public Access Channel #319. Jake enlists the only friend he's made in Dusk, an overweight tomboy nicknamed "Tank," to help him track down Frank's killer. As clues emerge and old leads heat up, Frank and Jake learn they make quite a team. But will Jake find Frank's killer? And will Frank find a real haunted house in time for Halloween?
“Paranormal Properties is a great, family-friendly Young Adult novel about a boy who can talk to ghosts. Equal parts Scooby-Doo, CSI and the Hardy Boys, you will enjoy getting to know Jake, Frank and Tank as much as I did. Now, if only ‘Paranormal Properties’ was a real show I could watch on TV every week…” ~ Rusty Fischer, author of Zombies Don’t Cry

About the Author:
I was fascinated with the paranormal when I was very young. I always felt like someone was around me even when I was alone. It caused me to be inspired to write a paranormal book where a teenager can see and hear ghosts and actually makes friends with one.
I use to love to write short stories in school and always wanted to be a writer. But raising children and working jobs I just could not find the time to indulge my passion. Then my children grew up and I ended up having two teenagers at home who did not need as much attention from me. I started toying with the idea of writing once again. So setting aside 5 to 10 minutes per day to write at least one page I could end up with a book a year. Now Paranormal Properties is published and I have a list of 8 more books to write. I don't think I"ll be slowing down anytime soon.

Interview and Giveaway with Sandy Wolters

What inspired you to write this book?
My husband, Michael, is the inspiration behind Soul Mates.  I was in bed at that point right before sleep and thinking about how lucky I am to have such a wonderful man in my life.  We were high school sweethearts and we'll be married for 35 years in September.
We're one of those couples that always seem to know what the other is thinking.  I started to wonder how many other lifetimes we had spent together to have such a close, loving bond in this lifetime.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
In my book, Soul Mates, Donovan was a very difficult character to write.  At the beginning of the book, I really wanted the reader to feel compassion for him, but as this character builds, I wanted him to be seen as the villain he really is.   By the end of the book, I wanted the reader to despise him.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
My second book, Justice For Emily, is a romantic/suspense.  This book is much darker than anything else I've written to date.  The characters in this book do everything they can to get justice for a woman in death that couldn't fight for herself when she was living.
I'm a ID (Investigation Discovery) channel junkie.  I love all those shows like Forensic Files, FBI: Criminal Pursuit, and Homicide Hunter.  I was watching one of these shows some time back and saw a story about a woman that was murdered by her husband.  I couldn't get this true life event out of my head and I knew I had to write about it.  I did fictionalize it of course, but the story struck my heart and I knew I had to be true to it.
I researched everything from police investigations to cadaveric spasms for this book.  I learned a lot in the process and I hope the readers find it interesting as well.
There is also a second case that is discussed in Justice For Emily that actually happened here in the Phoenix area that broke my heart.
Do you write in different genres?
I always write in the romance genre, but I have some fun writing in various sub-genres of romance.
My first book, Maggie Mae,  is a contemporary romance with a ghostly paranormal twist.
My second book, Justice For Emily, is a romantic suspense/crime drama with a ghostly paranormal twist.  My third book, A Brother's Love, fits into this category as well.
I had so much fun writing Soul Mates because with the time travel aspects, it's a contemporary romance and a historical romance.  There's also some pretty cool magic involved.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I just can't get enough chocolate.  I have it everywhere in the house.  My desk is always covered with different bags of candy bars and chocolate covered mints.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I love to be in the outdoors (with my Kindle of course).  I'm not a 5-star restaurant type person.  I enjoy camping in a tent, hiking, fishing and hunting.  I have to say that when we camp, my husband does all the cooking. He loves to cook and that means it's a true vacation for me.  I just have to sit around the campfire and wait for him to serve me.  It doesn't get much better than that.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I read every spare moment I have and any place I may be.  This includes the grocery store, the gas station and even occasionally red lights.  Thank God for my Kindle.  I used to have books everywhere.  My car was full of them.  Now, I carry about 5,000 books with me where ever I go.  It makes me all tingly.  LOL
What can readers expect next from you?
I currently have two books in the works:  Carley , a contemporary romance and sequel to my first book, Maggie Mae Till Death Us Do Part , a steamy romantic suspense/crime drama.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Today was indeed a special day. It was not only her birthday, but also a day of festival where all the people belonging to the Clan O’Brien converged on the castle dressed in their finest clothes, partook in games, listened to bards, danced, and indulged in succulent meats and spirits. Today was the first day of February, traditionally the first day of spring in Ireland and the day for honoring St. Brigid of Kildare. Long tables and benches had been set out in the courtyard for all the clansmen and visitors to partake in the celebration.
Maybe, just maybe, if she were lucky, she would get a glimpse of the chief's son, Donovan. She smiled to herself, not understanding the feelings her six-year-old heart felt when her gaze fell on the beautiful Donovan with his dark hair and intense, ten-year-old boyish good looks.
She held the wild rose she had picked on her walk to the castle close to her heart. She didn't know why, but she believed this rose was significant somehow. Her mother had always taught her to listen to her inner feelings so Shannon clung to the rose, knowing it would be of great import today.
As she weaved her way through the people, her spirits soared. Everyone was smiling, laughing, friendly. Moving closer to the inner circle of the courtyard, she noticed many unfamiliar faces among the men. While not unusual at festival time, her curiosity was aroused. As she moved even closer, a cold chill ran down her spine. Questions filled her mind as she became aware that these men displayed none of the lightheartedness of the others—in fact, just the opposite.
Her hand unwittingly flew to the amulet hanging around her neck in a leather pouch to feel its warmth and security. Who are these men? Why do they all look so unapproachable, so angry? Her feeling of unease was so intense that she wanted to run from the celebration and sound a warning of danger. Every instinct within her was forewarning Shannon about the pure evil of which these men were capable.
With such strong feelings of distress running through her body, she didn't realize that she was slowly backing away from where the men had gathered in a single area of the courtyard. As she put distance between herself and these strangers, the tension in her body eased. Though her senses were relaxing, she still clutched her amulet. Turning, she saw a stranger dressed as the frightening men were dressed; yet, there was something different about this man. He was not angry like the others. She felt no evil cascading off of him as she had with the others.
This man was sad, the feeling so strong within him that the air around him seemed to shimmer with it. She stood there, unable to move, watching as people, walking by this man, unconsciously gave him a wide berth. Although the people seemed oblivious to the shimmering aura around him, it was evident they must have felt it for they walked around this force field of sorrow as if to avoid being trapped in it.
Aengus Doyle, heir to the Clan Doyle, sat and stared into his cup of ale. He was burdened by the  viciousness that always overtook him when he sought revenge against those who had murdered the people of his father’s clan—murdered for a few meaningless trinkets and even less livestock. With each day that passed, he knew he was becoming more and more like his bloodthirsty father, who ruled with an iron fist and a heart of stone. He could not help but wonder what had happened to that young lad who had loved life and dreamed of leading his father’s people with a generous, kind heart, rather than with one as black as his had become. Torturing those thieves had excited him as he discovered new ways to inflict pain upon them. It was as if his father had stepped inside him, possessing his body like the devil himself. Now it sickened him to the core.
Lost in thought and blocking all the sounds of celebration from himself, he felt a slight shift in the air pressure around him. A tiny voice made its way through the psychological walls he had set up around himself.
"Excuse me, sir."
He ignored the sweet voice as he forcibly kept his attention on his feelings of disgust about the atrocities he had inflicted on other human beings. He hoped this exercise and his remorse would keep these dark, powerful emotions chained within himself, never to appear to him again. If he could keep them there, perhaps he had a chance to go on with his life.
"Excuse me, sir," the voice repeated.
Without looking up, Aengus snarled, "Go away! I do not desire to have a conversation."
The next moment, a beautiful rose moved into his field of vision. Something in his gut clenched. He looked up to see a little girl dressed in a well-worn smock, holding the rose out to him. His body relaxed as he looked at this beautiful child in front of him. She had golden hair that shimmered in the sun, light-colored freckles dotted her nose, and a beautiful smile crossed her lovely, bow-shaped mouth. Looking into her large, stunning eyes, he forgot to breathe. Her eyes were such a dark blue, they reminded him of priceless gems he had once been shown by his father in his clan's coffers. Her soul shone brightly through these eyes of sparkling sapphire, and he knew he would never forget them. He felt this child looking into his soul and experienced peace for the first time since his journey had begun.
"I picked this rose for you, sir, on my way to the castle." She brandished the wild rose, and her smile grew even larger.
Aengus lifted his hand and gently took the rose from the child. As he did this, she climbed into his lap and put her tiny hand on his face to help steal the sadness from him.
"My name is Shannon. Today is not a good day to feel so sad. Today is a happy day. It is festival and my sixth birthday. No one should feel the pain you do today."
The emotion this child was evoking in him stunned Aengus. At her touch, tension that had ensconced itself in his body flowed out of him. He felt warmth and love emanating from this small angel, undoubtedly sent to him from heaven above. No more words were spoken. Shannon simply looked into his eyes and smiled. Time stood still. He knew this tiny girl was somehow giving him strength, healing his soul. He didn't understand it, but he wouldn't refuse the gift she was passing to him.
Proudly, she told him, "My mother says I have a gift. She says that I'm going to be a very important person when I grow up. I'm going to change the way people think and how they treat others." Her hand moved from his face to clutch her amulet. "You are in danger. I can feel it. You're afraid of losing yourself to the dark side of your ancestry."
She paused as she took the pouch off of her body and held it out to him. "This is my talisman. It's very powerful." She reached for his hand and placed it over the amulet in her own. "Do you feel it? Do you feel the power of it?"
His breath caught in his throat. He could feel the power, power such as that contained in the strong storms at sea. He felt the power surge through his body as if he had been hit by lightening.
"Do you feel it?"
He couldn't speak. All he could do was acknowledge her with a nod.
"The amulet keeps me safe. My mother said to never take it off, but I believe your soul is in grave danger, and you need it more than I."
Aengus stared at her, unwilling to let go of the emotions this child aroused in him. She was offering something so personal, so powerful, to a complete stranger who she felt needed help.
Afraid of his voice cracking, he spoke very softly. "Thank you, little one, but I cannot accept such a gift as this. I have nothing of value to give in return."
Shannon smiled. "The evil from your soul is gift enough. You, too, are destined to change the people around you. You need this to stay safe so you can continue on the path you were meant to be on."
She put the pouch around his neck and pressed it against his heart. His body shook with emotions he had not felt in years. He felt as though he now had the strength to beat the devil himself. He didn't know how or why, but he knew her words were true. He would change the lives of the people in his clan for the better when he became chieftain of the Clan Doyle.
She gently slid off his lap and gave him one last, delightful smile. Without her sitting on his lap, the sharp pain of abandonment, complete isolation, washed over him again.
"I must leave now to go home and help mother bring our food to the festival." Conspiratorially, she cupped her hands to her mouth as if relaying a big secret. "I'm going to walk home through the trees." She giggled.
"My mother says not to walk there because there are goblins and fairies that will carry me off, but I've never seen one."
Immediately alert, he leaned forward and reached for her hands. "Let me take you home. It's the least I can do for you."
Cocking her head, she said. "I love to walk, and I don't live far. You stay and enjoy the festival. I'm glad you feel better. The sadness has stopped shimmering in the air around you."
He didn't want to let her go. He pleaded, "Please, do as your mother asks. Take the road. It's much safer than the trees." He paused, thinking of the ambush he and his men had accomplished just hours ago in trees like these. "There are bigger and much uglier things than fairies or goblins that can hide in the woods."
Her answering smile sent waves of warmth to his very core as she nodded. "Then I will take the road." She turned and walked away from him through the entrance of the castle.
His eyes never wavered from her retreating form. He continued to watch even after she was no longer visible. Reaching up. he gently fingered the amulet. His urge to look at what was inside the leather pouch was strong, but he felt this was something that must be done when no one was watching.
As he sat there, contemplating this tiny, angelic child who was placed in his path, a sense of foreboding settled over him. It was so strong that he found himself upright and moving quickly to his horse outside the castle walls before his actions even registered in his brain. Panic set in. Shannon, his beautiful, six-year-old guardian angel, was in trouble, and he knew it. He had to get to her. He kicked his horse and moved quickly down the road leading away from the castle.
As he approached a sharp bend in the road that hid the path ahead, his heart sank. He knew he would find her around this bend. A woman’s wail sliced through the air and excised all the strength in his body. His horse kept moving forward until they rounded the corner, and he saw her, his little angel, Shannon. She was lying broken on the road ahead of him.
Dropping from his horse, he ran the rest of the distance to her. The hysterical woman, Shannon's mother, was being held back from Shannon's body by other children who were older than his angel, obviously her brothers and sisters.
Aengus knelt beside the beautiful child in the tattered dress and tears fell unashamedly down his face. He looked into her huge, lifeless, dark-blue eyes that were wide open and staring at the sky. She was gone. He placed the beautiful wild rose in her hand and picked up her broken body, trying to wash away the feeling of isolation that her loss was reigniting in him. He rocked her body back and forth, crying for a child who had changed his life in a matter of minutes.
"I promise you, Shannon, I will heed your words and change my life. My soul is safe from the darkness because of you. I will never forget you, and you will be in my heart forever."

About the Author:
I’ve been an avid reader for years. To my husband’s dismay, I have bookshelves full of books, rooms full of books, boxes full of books. My cars have books in them. I just can’t seem to get rid of them after I read them. You just never know when you will want to read it again, right? When my husband bought me a Kindle, it cut down on our need for storage, but it opened me up to books that I might never have experienced otherwise.
The biggest transition in my relationship with books occurred, however, when I, much to my surprise, became an author. I had started having dreams about people I didn’t know. I started looking forward to my dreams every night. Then I realized that I was daydreaming about these people as well. I'd just be sitting there, and these people and their antics would pop into my mind. Finally, I gave in and began writing their story down, something I had never dreamed of doing.
After I wrote my first book Maggie Mae, I had do idea what to do with it. After trying the traditional route for a little while, my husband pushed me in the direction of ebooks, and I’ve never looked back.
My books invariably feature strong women. My husband, Michael, and I have raised two strong daughters, Pilar and Shandelle, and they inspire the characters in my stories. As a matter of fact, Pilar was the main character in my book A Brother’s Love, and Shandelle is the main character in my new release Soul Mates. Justice for Emily was the most difficult book I’ve written, and that was because Emily was the victim of a sadistic, cruel, and abusive husband, who just happened to be the Chief of Police. One of my readers described this books as a “good mystery laced with sex, violence, ghosts and spirits.” The only thing her summary left out was the strength of the two women in this story: Emily and Rachael.
I’ve had fun with all the books I’ve written. I think the fact that I insert real events into my books, things that have actually happened in my family’s lives, is like having a private joke. Knowing that Michael Rogers in Maggie Mae is based on my husband tickles my fancy. I am a very lucky woman!
Although I write romance novels, they always contain a paranormal twist. My latest, Soul Mates, has the added element of time travel accomplished through the magical arts. I imagine my future writings will always contain romance with strong women and men of character, influenced by events that reach beyond what we consider normal, and perhaps seasoned with a little touch of whimsy.

Interview with Jocelyn Adams

Stone Chameleon
Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Hey, great to meet everyone.  I was born and raised a farm girl in small town Ontario and still love living in the country, though the farm’s long gone.  I spend my days working at a high school, and my nights playing with my little girl and writing.
Urban fantasy has settled into my heart and made a home there.  I used to be a die-hard Stephen King horror fan, and I still am, but when a friend put me onto Laurell K. Hamilton, I was finished.  That was it.  I didn’t even know I could write, but I suddenly wanted to, and I wanted to write that kind of book, dark, gritty and filled with neat creatures and romance.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Stone Chameleon is the opener to my Ironhill Jinn series.  Lou Hudson is a preternatural pest exterminator, and also the last of the jinn.  She’s living in secret as her species is condemned and was all but wiped out shortly before she was born.  Her element is earth, and she can transform herself into stone.  When her emotions rise, she can even cause an accidental earth quake.  Add in a bad murder wrap, a gorgeous and grouchy highland vampire in a kilt, some mystery and romance, and you’ll have Stone Chameleon.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Oh yes.  I don’t usually have much of a hard time feeling out characters, but Amun Bassili, Lou Hudson’s potential love interest in Stone Chameleon, really had me stumped for a while.  Beta readers hated him, so I had to do a lot of tweaking to get that love/hate thing to a perfect balance.  Easier said than done.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I’m smiling right now.  I kind of have a thing for really good villains, and while Isaac (the highland vampire) isn’t truly a villain, he makes a damn fine antagonist.  He’s arrogant and demanding, but he’s got a softer side when it comes to Lou that slips out now and then.  I wasn’t sure how much he’d play into the series, but after book one, I’ve decided to keep him around and give him a bigger role.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
It depends on the book and how I’m writing it.  I’m a total pantser, so I often just start writing and the characters pretty much tell me who they are.  When I’m participating in the novel marathon I do each year to raise money for adult literacy programs, I do sketch out basic attributes, both physical and personality, but those often change as I write anyway, so I’m not sure why I bother. J
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
This is one of my favorites.  It’s so very Isaac.
I must have dozed a bit, because something woke me.  A sound?  Remnants of a dream?  The cool water sloshed over the side of the tub as I sat upright and looked around.  The lack of light suggested the sun had gone down, putting the hour at around nine at least.“Miss Hudson, do not test my patience,” Isaac bellowed from somewhere beyond the bathroom door.Definitely not a dream.  My heart tried to escape my throat as I leapt from the bath and wrapped my terrycloth robe around me, still cinching the belt when I entered the living room.Once again, I found Isaac on the patio, his shoulders heaving to add to the huffing bull image he pulled off so nicely.  I should have known he’d show up after receiving my message upon waking, but it still surprised me.  He’d shed his sash and wore nothing but his kilt, a wide black belt, and a brass buckle the size of my head.  Growing visibly calm, he took a few steps nearer, his dark gaze sweeping my body before landing back on my face.  “You’re all pruny.  What have you been doing, trying to pickle yourself?”Maybe I could blame it on sugar aftermath, or possibly stress about Mum, my impending death, or that I’d caused an earthquake with my drunkenness, but his comment cracked me up until I held my aching belly.  When I finished wiping tears from my eyes and shook off the last of my giggles, I found him grinning at me, though it held more petulance than amusement.“You have a lovely laugh, Miss Hudson.”  The grin flattened.  “It would be a shame to extinguish it.”

Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
Ironhill stands on the ground that had been Philadelphia before a preternatural war all but destroyed it thirty years ago.  So many of the jinn fell there that the soil is rich with power, drawing creatures of all kinds to live there.  It’s causing a few problems with the regular old humans who are now well in the minority and are beginning to notice.  Lou does her best to keep the peace and acts as an advocate for all of the non-human races.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
I tend to keep the backstory to a minimum as I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to feel like I’m reading all of the previous books in a series every time I pick up a new one.  There is enough information in book two that a reader shouldn’t be too lost, but it’s still best read in order.
Do you write in different genres?
I do, actually.  I have another pen name that I write adult erotica, both contemporary and fantasy.  Under this pen name, I write contemporary romance, urban fantasy, paranormal romance and a little bit of horror, mostly in short stories.  Under yet another pen name, I’m developing my first young adult literary novel about a child of rape growing up in a small town.  Juggling personalities is rough, but sometimes the muse goes wherever he wants to, and I tend to follow.  J
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I don’t have a lot of those.  Once in a while I like a little bit of Jack Daniels and gingerale.  I’d also go to the end of the earth to have a great piece of toast and honey.  I share that with my main character in Stone Chameleon.  Yum.
What was the last amazing book you read?
That would be Iced, the latest of the FEVER series by Karen Marie Moning.  I didn’t expect to like it so much since the main character is so young and I prefer adult books, but she writes fascinating characters and hooked me right from the first chapter.  I can’t wait to read the rest of Dani O’Malley’s adventures in Dublin.

Blurb:
When a series of unusual murders point to Lou Hudson, Ironhill’s equal rights advocate, as the primary suspect, she has but one choice: find the real perpetrator before her trial begins or face execution.

Lou, the last of the jinn, survives by hiding her abilities after the rest of the elementals fell victim to genocide. As a preternatural pest exterminator and self-proclaimed guardian of the innocent, she’s accustomed to trudging through the dregs of society. Hunting down a pesky murderer should be easy, especially with help from the dashing and mischievous local media darling.

For Lou, though, nothing is ever simple. When she discovers the killer’s identity, to reveal it would unearth her secret and go against her strict moral code, resulting in a deadly catch twenty-two.

Excerpt:

A flare shot over the rooftops to our left. I dove at Blake and slammed him to the pavement as another column of fire streaked toward us. The flames seared my back. The dragon bat was not a happy camper. Someone landed on my backside, crushing a grunt out of me and pounding my shoulder blade while Blake gasped beneath me.

“Bloody hell, Amun,” I said, before I realized he did it to put out the flames eating up my shirt. “Oh, I see. Thanks.”

He pulled me up, and the three of us ducked behind a car in the parking lot beside the Whip and Tickle, a vampire fetish-wear shop. The owl-sized bat swooped over us again, blasting an inferno that exploded the front window of the shop, sending studded leather and melted mannequins onto the sidewalk.

Three of the other creatures we’d hunted lay dead on other streets, the scorpion included, all by my sword when I’d been left with two options: kill or die. Twelve more were contained in three trucks. The bat remained the only unwelcome visitor in Fangtown. Other than us, of course.

“This is madness, Lou.” Amun panted beside me, his arms rising to shield his head as the bat exhaled on a Mini Cooper two cars over, the crackling and popping suggesting we should find a new hiding place.

“I agree with Mr. Bassili,” Blake said, his drawl worsening with his fright. “What the hell in a hand grenade do we do now?”

Rudy poked his almost translucent head out from behind the newspaper boxes he dove behind during the first fiery blast. The poor guy shook so badly I’d have been surprised if he could see anything. I gestured to him to stay put. “We’ve scared it, not something you want to do to a dragon bat.” A deep exhalation centered me enough to think. “I seem to recall the pecking order in a colony of bats. If we want protection from the dominants, we must present an offering of food.”

“And that helps us how?” Amun, his face blackened with soot and smeared with dirt, tilted to rest against the tire of the car, appearing as frazzled as I’d ever seen him. The sight induced a belly laugh that wouldn’t be contained.

He took on a strange expression of one eyebrow cocked and a half-grin, as if he wasn’t sure whether to be amused or offended. “What?”

I waved him off. “Nothing, I think I’m just losing my marbles.” Rising up enough to see around the car to Rudy, I shouted, “Rudy, do you have any rodents in your truck? Rats or mice?”

“No,” he hollered back, “but I can call some for you.”

I nodded. “As fast as you can.”

Flapping came from our rears. Crackling. A blast tossed the front of a car up until it crashed down on its hood, crushing a Mazda behind it.

“Move!” I shoved at Amun and tugged Blake toward the back of the fetish shop, since it was much closer than the front where flames still poured out of the broken window. Amun kicked out with a startling force against the wooden door. It took three tries, but it finally gave. My, but he was strong. We rushed inside and crouched behind a cement wall beside a set of stairs leading down.

“What do you want the rats for?” Amun asked with obvious suspicion. “Tell me you don’t want one of us to go out there and dangle something for that thing to come and snatch, probably toasting us to a golden brown in the process? Because I think I’ve grown a healthy dose of sympathy for marshmallows right about now.”

“Don’t worry, Amun. I’m going, not you. We just need to listen for Rudy to come back, if he hasn’t chickened out and run for the hills. Hopefully rats like to hang out here and aren’t snapped up for evening snacks.” There was a reason the umikan stuck to small, normal pests, other than his ability to talk to them. Although he’d deal with the scarier stuff when the need called for it, he usually didn’t have enough courage to fill a thimble.

“What?” Amun palmed his forehead. “You can’t be serious.” He gestured toward the door. “Have you been oblivious to the destruction that thing caused just in the last ten minutes? It’s pissed, and I don’t think it’s going to care about some little morsel you offer it.” His frown tugged at his features. “Why are you smiling like that?”

I shrugged, hopped up on adrenaline and enjoying the sight of the great Amun Bassili squirming. “This is what I do for a living.”

“You’re enjoying this?” Both of his eyebrows jacked up.

“Yup,” Blake said, rolling his eyes and chuckling from deep in his belly. “Weirdest broad I ever knew. Takes a bit of starch outta the ole manhood, don’t it?”

I wiped the char from my hands onto my jeans. “To do a job one takes no pride in is a travesty, in my opinion.”

At Rudy’s shout from beyond the wall, I said, “Stay here. Don’t come out until I call or you could send the bat into fits again.”

How I came to write the Magic Seasons series
I’d love to say the series was planned and plotted, but in truth it wasn’t.  At the time I typed that first letter, I hadn’t even written anything other than the odd poem for about ten years.  The actual idea to sit down and write a book started as me trying to get the last word in on a friend.
My close friend and I both worked from home in 2006 when From Beltane Magic was written and at that time we spent nearly every day together, whether online or short road trips, even working together.  In the fall she decided she was going on a trip to see family in the states and was going to be gone more than a month.  I was devastated and had no idea what I was going to do with myself while she was away.  When I asked her that question her reply was ‘write a book’ … so I did.
A month later when she returned I was on the second book and the story was just flying onto the pages.  My friend read the first story, and I’m sure she expected a joke in some way and it was my surprised when she was honestly shocked that I had an actual story, with plot—and a good one at that.  The rest they say is history.
Where did I get the idea for the plot?  At first I didn’t really have a plot, just ideas and experiences to put onto paper.  The series really started to form when I began to figure out the characters.  I had just spend two years traveling around to various pagan festivals and met some rather fantastic people along the way.  While I didn’t base my characters on any one person I met at this time, it clear that each character is a mix of many from that time.  I really wanted to share all the knowledge I had obtained in this time and even though I didn’t have the thrill of seeing some of the fabulous things my characters can do, the underlying pagan beliefs are there weaved in the story.
Of course I was as shocked when my sweet paranormal romance turned into something entirely different and the first murder victims were discovered on that damp morning of the Beltane gathering.
***The characters from The Magic Seasons series
I fell in love with each and every one of them.  For almost two years while I was writing this series they were with me all the time, whether I was working, trying to fall asleep or making dinner.  I didn’t want to let them go and deep down inside I haven’t, there will be more to the series later, much later.
While each character is in all of the series, with news being added in later on, I tried to focus on a couple in each book so we could really get to know them.  I didn’t plot their pasts, I sat down and found their names and general personality and then let them come to life and share with me what they were all about.
This is why I fell in love with all of them:
In From Beltane Magic:
Leena is so calm and serene at times writing her scenes and just typing her dialogue made me feel a peace, it was quite amazing to experience.   Aileena (Leena) is a woman that is gentle in everything, her personality and moods. She always feels maternal with her closest friends and would go out of their way to look after any one of them. Her ability of controlling the elements and knowledge of plants make her magic abilities strong and unbreakable.  She is a leader at work and in life, always working hard to keep those around her close, but never allowing anyone to get too close.
Owen is the strong, silent type of male.  He reminded me of a giant teddy bear when I was writing his parts. Who doesn’t love a teddy bear?  Owen is a man that reflects humor and cavalier vibrations to others, he is gentle and caring as is his ability to draw negative and heal others. If you didn’t know him, you would never realize he came from violence.  Knowing how the real world can be, he has vowed to never put himself into the position, or allow anyone else that could open up the world he has carefully sealed shut forever
In The Solstice Heat:
Kasey makes me tired just watching her fly across the pages.  She also makes me laugh and that’s never a bad thing. Kassandra (Kasey) is a woman that exudes energy and brightness; she is as equally passionate when angry as she is when she’s happy. The energy she carries from life comes through in all her magical workings with spells and stones, giving them great magical strength. She is a dreamer and often wishes she could re-write her own story so that she was charming and sophisticated enough to be with a certain wealthy male lawyer she wants more than anything else.
Chris has a dark, powerful magnetism that he keeps carefully under wraps.  I enjoyed unraveling his secrets and finding out what made him that way. Christopher is a force of strength and experience that is carefully hidden behind the easy mannerism he has adapted so carefully.  There is nothing he cannot do where magic is concerned and he has tried all manner of things, whether right or wrong.  His fortune has left him wanting for nothing else in life, except the one thing money can’t buy him, the woman he feels too unclean to approach.
In Harvest Dreams:
Rachel with her careless and recklessness I find myself just a little envious but love her just the same. Rachel is a woman that lives carefree with a buoyant recklessness. She loves being a flirt and has spent many years indulging that side of her personality. Her energy draws other; her character is to protect all those that cannot protect themselves.  When she’s not riding on life, she is helping children less fortunate then herself.
Steven, at first I thought he was the comedian in the group, but I was shocked to find out there was so much more under the surface. Steven (Doc) is man that gives more than his energy usually allows.  He is a highly respected pediatrician that always goes that extra step to ensure all in his care are receiving his utmost attention.  He often sacrifices sleep to spend time with his friends, and he can’t seem to help affably chasing the skirt of the one woman that breaks his easy going charm and makes him forget he’s supposed to be the jovial.  He hides his strength in body and magic, never letting others know that he is more than the carefree man with everything he needs.
In Autumn Dance:
Cora is so graceful and forgiving there is no way I couldn’t find myself drawn to her. Coralee is a woman that represents grace and simplicity.  She has the skill of being able to feel emotion, aura and see beyond the now.  The pain sometimes associated with this gift has forced her to live her life from a distance.  She decided early in life what she wanted, and returned from her years away at school set to obtain her biggest dream. Unfortunately she has found the past few years lacking just that as she waits for the man she wants to stop and look at her instead of every female that throws themselves in his path.
Dade despite nothing ever turning out quite like he wanted it to, I loved the way he tried to help everyone.  Dade is a man that follows life simply, yet his charitable personality brings him a wealth of   satisfaction.  He is the first to lend a hand, the last to stay and help and the one everyone calls when something goes wrong.  Even though his own generous nature fills his life, he still manages to find time enough to get himself into a mess at every turn and spends most of the time imploring forgiveness from the one sexy voodoo witch he can’t seem to ever get close to.
In Winter Mist:
Rhonda, I could never survive as she has, her strength and determination amazes me. Rhonda is a woman that becomes a victim to the vicious attack of a killer.  Even though she survives, she will have to learn to live with the scars for the rest of her life.  In hiding she has to rebuild the strength to get through it. She is forced to spend her days and nights in the company of a detective, that seems to have no other plan in life than to constantly aggravate her and get in her way.
Patrick is the hero in my Magic Seasons world, he came out of nowhere and it took me a long time to find out what makes him tick. Patrick is a man that has lived a rough life undercover in all the wrong places, for too long.  His light Irish charm carefully keeps others from seeing the dangerous man that lies inside.  He is the first for justice and will go out of his way to keep the innocent safe.  He finds himself falling for the woman that was a victim of a sick and vile person and is caught between keeping her out of harm’s way and completing the job he needs to finish. She shows no fear of him and slowly tears away the walls that surround him.
