The Hunters and the Queen: The Element Series-Book One by Virginia Vayna

The Hunters and the Queen is the first book in the Element series. I aim to have book II, The Gypsy Hunter, finished by summer 2013. I am not completely committed to the title of the second book, so when the book is released it might have a different title. In the Hunters and the Queen, food is used to show a subtle difference between the hunters and those beings that still hold their heartbeat. As you may know, once an individual fully becomes a hunter they lose their heartbeat. Hunters also lose their ability to eat cooked food, and they further lose their ability to eat almost all food. Food is used to show a character contrast between the main character, Jolán Vajnbirg, and the Order of the Hunters. Traditionally, food holds the capability to create comfortable relationships in society, to bring joy and delight to people, so eliminating such food comfort from the hunters was deliberate. Explaining the sub-human qualities of the hunters through food helped me connect to the darker side of the hunter. As I wrote The Hunters and the Queen, I listened to a lot of dubstep and to music with qualities similar to the group, The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I have attached a brief playlist that joined me as I wrote the book. The playlist indicates the artist, the song, and the album name.

I hope you enjoy the story.

Book Description:
While working on her studies at the Churchill Military Academy in Kinsburgh, England, Jolán Vajnbirg’s final year at the academy develops into a year of competition, aristocratic love, reincarnated spirits, and a calling from the sky world to help save earth from the death and destruction caused by the order of the hunters.
Jolán Vajnbirg is an often reserved, yet occasionally outspoken young woman living in Kinsburgh, England. She has a relatively easy life living in her quiet England town. She has a full-ride swimming scholarship to the Churchill Military Academy. She has a strong mind, she has an athletic body and she has a loving family and caring friends. Even though her family has a modest income, Jolán makes the best of her situation and excels at anything she puts her focus towards.
The sky world is steadily preparing Jolán for her future fate. Jolán will need her friends to help her battle the order of the hunters. The hunters have upset the universal balance of earth, and the hunters have upset the sky world.

Please Welcome Liz Long to Fang-tastic Books Today

I love magic. Most of my favorite books are fantasies that involve magic in some way and I adore witches (I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen every episode of Charmed). I love the idea of witchcraft, that there are people out there who can whip up a potion to help others or save the day (since we of course know that magic used for personal gain is always, always a no-no!)
I also like to combine realistic circumstances with magic – sort of a balancing act to keep readers in the story despite being able to suspend their disbelief. We can read about Hogwarts all day long, but it was the way in which Diagon Alley was just on the other side of real-world London that caught our attention, that you could get to your train through a brick wall that convinces us to look for Platform 9¾. Much of the excitement in Charmed episodes was from the Halliwell sisters avoiding getting caught by humans since they had to operate in everyday San Franciso. Even while we know it’s fiction, we love the idea of getting caught up in it – with a realistic approach that twists magic in our everyday lives, we can imagine ourselves getting wrapped up in the world we’re reading.

“Witch magic was powerful, but not nearly what the movies made it out to be. Humans could explain away most of their subtle magic. A witch’s magic was more natural with potions and rituals, no wands required. Each witch’s strength was different.”
Ruby, our protagonist, becomes one of the killer’s main targets due to her special abilities. She actually has the capacity to use mind control, though she likes to call them “mental suggestions” to avoid freaking anyone out.
In one scene, Ruby is at a crowded bar with her friend Cooper. While Ruby is not one to abuse her power, sometimes she can get away with it – in this instance, a way to get the bartender’s attention for a drink. Here’s how she does it:
“She focused her gaze on the drunk guy who’d caught the bartender and let a wave of energy roll off her towards him. She narrowed her eyes, mentally suggested the man get a cab. A second later, the man paused mid-conversation, blinked as though waking up from a nap. He cut off the bartender, shaking his head, and walked out the door without another word. Ruby could see him through the window as he hailed the first banana yellow taxi down the block.
Then she turned her eyes on the bartender, who’d taken the opportunity to grab a sip of water. As soon as he felt Ruby’s eyes on him, he dropped what he was doing and looked around the area until he found her. Like a moth to a flame, he headed straight over, ignoring all the others who tried to flag him down for a drink.”
So while Ruby and others are certainly terrific witches with firepower behind them, I wanted to do it in a way that relates back to the reader as a normal human. Ruby’s gift is rare, but not as powerful as some might think. Most with her gift can only give suggestions in a thought or give people headaches. And most witches in my world perform self-protection spells to avoid getting caught in magical crosshairs, so it’s not even like Ruby can go around controlling everyone in her path.
In doing things this way, I hope it’s easier for readers to get caught up in the excitement and emotions of the story. They can relate to the characters, but also see themselves in this normal city. Don’t we all like the idea of magic hiding right underneath our noses?
About the Author:
Liz Long is lucky enough to have a dream career in magazine publishing as an editor and writer, yet still have time to create adventures on the side. If you catch her staring off into space or talking to herself, don’t worry – it’s just her imagination at work.
Liz graduated from Longwood University with a BA in English, though her professors might be disappointed to hear she reads more fantasy fiction than literary novels. She also loves action and thriller genres. This book probably won’t change your life, but she hopes it steals you away from reality for a while.

Book Description:
Sophie doesn't believe in happily ever after. These days, she'd settle for alive after sunrise.
Advice columnist and newly-appointed oracle to the demivampire, Sophie Galen has more issues than a Cosmo collection: a new mentor with a mean streak, a werewolf stalker she can't shake, and a relationship with her ex's family that redefines the term complicated. And then there's her ex himself, who is more interested in playing leader of the vampire pack than in his own salvation.
Becoming a better oracle is tough enough, but when Sophie encounters a deadly enemy - one she never dreamed of facing - it will take everything she's ever learned in order to survive.

Interview and Giveaway with Nancy Cohen

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to write in this particular genre?
I write romance and mysteries and have 18 published works in my repertoire. My humorous Bad Hair Day mystery series features hairstylist Marla Shore, who operates a salon in sunny South Florida. When not cutting and coloring people’s hair, she solves crimes along with hunky Detective Dalton Vail. Shear Murder is the tenth and latest title in this series.
I like the challenge of plotting a whodunit. These stories don’t focus on forensics or crime scene details. Once I have my victim, I determine who might have had reason to kill the person and why. Figuring out how the suspects are linked together is what draws me to write mysteries. It’s all about their relationships. Then there is the continuing cast. Marla and company, after ten books, have become my friends.
On the other hand, my wild side urges me to write romantic adventure. I started out writing sci-fi romance. My books in this genre have won the HOLT Medallion Award and Best Book in Romantic SciFi/Fantasy at The Romance Reviews.
Then I decided to try something different, so I set my new paranormal series in contemporary times. The Drift Lords Series takes place in a modern setting and involves Norse mythology. Think Thormeets Lord of the Rings.
When I write paranormal romance, logic still prevails like in a mystery, but myth and magic enter the equation. Anything can happen to my main characters. They can go on a quest, get captured by the enemy, brave volcanic vapors and demons. They can have adventures that I can’t do in a reality-based modern mystery. Even though my Drift Lords series takes place in a contemporary setting, these paranormal elements enliven the tales and expand the possibilities for my stories.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
I am not a fan of vampires or werewolves. Myth and magic appeal to me because they bring added depth to a story. For example, in the Drift Lords series, evil trolls are the villains, although I call them Trolleks. One of them could be the woman walking down the street. But watch out if she touches you. The Trollek touch conveys a chemical that turns humans into mind slaves. Shifters, elves, dwarfs, descendants of the Norse gods, dragons, and more inhabit this world, mixed in with every day humans like you and me. People don’t know these creatures exist. Having paranormal elements in a story gives it a twist that can be refreshingly different. That unseen world lends thrills and chills to what may seem like an ordinary setting but is far from it.What inspired you to write this book?
Warrior Rogue is a direct sequel to Warrior Prince. It’s a continuation of what happens to one of the characters at the end of the first story, but it is not necessary to read them in order. Each book in the series features a different hero and heroine with their own set of problems, even though overall the Drift Lords may be working toward a common goal.
The idea for the series came from a ride at Disney’s Epcot theme park. In the Norway pavilion is a ride called Maelstrom. You board a boat that glides into a dark tunnel and rises up a steep incline. At the top are three trolls who cast a spell on you to disappear. Suddenly, your boat is whisked backward through time into Norwegian history. I loved the idea of evil trolls, magic, and Norse mythology.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
Just as the Earth has tectonic plates, dimensional plates exist on a cosmic energy level. These fuel an electromagnetic grid that intersects at twelve distinct geographic areas. These points, known as Vile Vortices, are sites of anomalous activity. Twelve such locations exist around the world. The Bermuda Triangle is one of them.
When the dimensional plates grind against each other, the resultant pressure forces open a door between dimensions. Normally, the event horizon at this natural rift produces a substance called cors particles. When their mass reaches a critical level, the resultant pressure forces the rifts to close.
The Trolleks have devised a means to force open the rifts and keep them from shutting down. With the portals remaining open, the accumulation of cors particles will breach the point of no return. The dimensional drift will widen, causing a massive shock wave that will destroy everything in existence. In the meantime, the Trolleks have invaded Earth with the goal of enslaving mankind.
The Drift Lords are born with a special trait that becomes evident at puberty. They are able to smell cors particles, meaning they can tell when a portal is open. Their job is to repel the Trollek incursion and seal the rifts. However, it’s not so simple this time. They need the help of a special group of Earth women with special powers to deal with the mythological element and to fulfill an ancient prophecy.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
In each book, the team has a specific task to complete toward their goal of eliminating the Trollek threat, but you can jump into the series at any time. Each book features a different hero and heroine with their own set of problems to overcome. With my mystery series, too, you can enter any time as each story stands alone.
Please tell us about your latest release.
The action in Warrior Rogue starts off in Tokyo where our hero—Paz Hadar—is stranded. He is unable to contact his team and lacks his equipment and weapons. Jennifer Dyhr, an American woman he meets there, offers him a ride to the States in her business jet, but along the way they are assaulted mid-air. Jen and Paz get into one scrape after another, all the while trying desperately to get home.
Jen doesn’t believe Paz when he tells her she’s his destined mate and her powers are needed for his mission to succeed. But when she becomes a target to the enemy because of her heritage, she must rely on the devilishly handsome warrior to keep her safe.Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?I use Norwegian names whenever possible, since my series is based on Norse mythology. But it isn’t essential. Sometimes I’ll just use names that appeal to me.Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I have devised a character development sheet that I use in the beginning. I’ll want to know my person’s short and long term goals, what’s inhibiting him from reaching them, and why these are important. I’ll also want to know how the love interest will help complete him and how his character is going to grow or change by the end of the book.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Paz and Jen are on their way home on her business jet when they are attacked mid-air by Trolleks, who materialize inside the cabin. Paz has to make an emergency landing after an electromagnetic grenade disables the plane’s electrical systems. I consulted a commercial airline pilot to get the details correct. It’s such an exciting scene. This is the first time Jen meets a Trollek, and it is a memorable encounter. She’s astounded by Paz’s skills when he fights the beasts and lands the plane. Up until that point, she had believed him to be an ordinary citizen albeit a hunky guy.Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
My research involved such topics as Chinese junks, sea serpents, dragons, theme parks, alchemy, electromagnetic weapons, and more. I looked into the energy properties of diamonds. Mythology plays a large part in Warrior Rogue, of course. It was all interesting. I’d like to visit Himeji Castle in Japan, which became the model for my enemy fortress. This site had an online video that was immensely helpful to me in setting the scene. What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I went to a Russian shvitz at a Miami Beach hotel, got into a swimsuit, and snooped around the spa with a notebook and camera hidden under my towel. Those scenes are in Perish by Pedicure, Bad Hair Day Mystery #8. I’ve also toured a biohazardous waste material treatment plant, an aquaculture research center, and stayed overnight at a haunted hotel. These experiences have enhanced my mystery series.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
My sleuth, Marla Shore, is like me in many ways. We both share the same heritage and type of upbringing. She has hairdressing skills that I lack, though, plus she’s younger and more outgoing. She’s a lot braver, too. I wouldn’t dare venture to some of the places she’s gone in the Bad Hair Day series. But we share a nurturing instinct. She cares about her customers and wants to raise their self-confidence by making them look good. I went into nursing to take care of people. So we have that trait in common.Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I don’t believe in Writer’s Block. If I can’t write, it is because I’m too distracted by promotion or outside influences, or I’ve been disheartened by a bad review. I’m never at a loss for what to write because I plan it all out beforehand. I write a complete synopsis before I start Chapter One. This acts as my guideline and gives me direction, although the story may change once the characters take over. The constant marketing may get me down, in which case a weekend break may be in order. Or sometimes world news proves a distraction, and the work loses meaning until I remember how my stories provide escape for readers from their daily toil. That’s my goal, to make you forget outside strife and become immersed in my world.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
My first published book, Circle of Light, came out in 1994. That’s when my dream came true to be a published author. I was a writer before that, making time to write through a full-time job and raising children. But there’s nothing like holding a physical book in your hands and seeing it on the bookstore shelf. Now it’s different with the advent of digital technology, but a new release still provides a thrill.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
Reading, fine dining, cruising, lunch with friends, movies, outlet shopping.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I have a “reading couch” that is way past its prime, but I’m so comfortable on there that I hate to change it. It’s in our den next to a front window.
What can readers expect next from you?
Coming next is another Bad Hair Day mystery, Hanging By A Hair. And then I expect my 20th book to be Warrior Lord, #3 in the Drift Lords Series. I still have a final round of proof-reading to do on that story.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Sure, this scene is from Warrior Rogue, #2 in the Drift Lords Series.Paz killed the power just before touchdown. Jen’s teeth clattered together as they bumped the beach, bounced into the air, and bumped again. Sand spewed in all directions. Then the jet skidded along the narrow strip toward a tangle of trees ahead.“We’re not stopping.” She stared forward with horrified fascination, her heart threatening to jump out of her chest.“Hold on.” Paz pressed on the brake pedals. His hands gripped the wheel, arm muscles bulging with strain. They tipped sideways, and a terrible rending noise tore the air. Jen’s blood froze solid as part of the wing ripped off with a horrendous scraping sound. The deck tilted, and then suddenly, they stopped. Her side of the jet dipped toward the sand. She breathed in a couple of rapid, shallow breaths—stunned they were still intact. A grove of bamboo stood dead ahead. If they had not stopped, they would have been skewered.Dear God, we made it.She sat motionless, unable to budge, her body trembling.“Get out.” Paz jabbed his thumb toward the exit. “Fire is a risk since we weren’t able to dump the fuel. Plus we need to vacate this site.”His grim face told her there might be other reasons for haste. What if the natives were hostile? One thing at a time, Jen. Get your ass out of here.Paz collected the parts from his wrist device, unsnapped his harness, and rose. Jen followed suit, but she gathered her wits enough to grab her purse while he popped the escape hatch. Her cell phone was inside. Maybe, by some miracle, it would work in this remote location.“Come on, we can’t waste time.” Paz signaled to her from the open hatchway. She staggered toward him. Peering outside, she was glad to note they didn’t need the emergency chute. They could easily jump the short distance to the ground. Holding her long skirt, she leaped after Paz onto the beach. He caught her in his muscular arms and gently eased her down. His tousled hair, determined jaw, and ocean blue eyes had never looked better.“Thank you. You saved our lives.” On impulse, Jen rose on her tiptoes and kissed him. She’d only meant it to be a brief expression of gratitude, but Paz’s gaze intensified. He swept her into his arms and gave her a passionate kiss that left her breathless.

Interview- Deceiving the Witch Next Door by Melissa Bourbon Ramirez
Hello Melissa, welcome to Fang-tastic BooksCan you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Thanks for having me at Fang-tastic Books. I didn’t set out to publish e-only, or e-first, books, but when the opportunity arose, I couldn’t resist. I had my romantic suspense series, Deadly Legends, and jumped at the opportunity to have it published. When I got the chance to write Storie’s tale in Deceiving the Witch Next Door, I was thrilled. Magical realism in a contemporary world is right up my alley. E is a very fun and quick format and I adore bits of magic twisting within an ordinary world. It’s how I’d like the world to be.
What inspired you to write this book?
The whole concept for the Storiebook Café, the bookstore/café in the book, was inspired by a store of the same name in a little Texas town called Glen Rose. Glen Rose is a cute little town, and the owner of the store, also named Storie, just sparked this idea. I asked her if I could base a book off of her store and name, she said, “Of course!”, and I went to town writing!
Basically, Storie is a down-on-her-luck witch who’s not very good or experienced at what she does (for a variety of reasons). She and her friend, Harper, set up a bookshop/café in Bloomington, and she runs into Reid Malone, a man she once had a, um, run-in with years ago. They don’t see eye to eye on things and sparks fly. It’s a lot of fun!
Please tell us about your latest release.
I’d love to J Deceiving the Witch Next Door is a short contemporary romance with a light paranormal twist. It’s about Storie Bell and Reid Malone and the love story that began for them twelve years prior to when the actual story takes place. It’s Southern, a little spicy, and a lot of fun.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
The moment when Storie first realizes that maybe Reid Malone isn’t so bad is a favorite of mine. She thinks he’s going to do (and want) one thing, but he does something different and that surprises her. It felt right and was a great way to bring them together, even if later in the scene a big conflict rips them apart again.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I visited a nudist resort when I was researching Bare-Naked Lola, the 3rdbook in my Lola Cruz mystery series. Talk about surreal. It was a very interesting experience.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Sometimes, when writing sex scenes, I struggle a little bit. My mom is my biggest fan and when she first bought Sacrifice of Passion, I was horrified that she’d be reading the sex scenes. She laughed and said she knew she’d be shocked that I knew the things I wrote about! I’m 46 with 5 kids, so I got a good chuckle out of that. Still, I always think, holy smokes, my parents might read this!
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I’ve recently had to give up dairy, which has been a struggle. I love cheese and have a café mocha addiction. I’ve adapted to soy mochas and lattes, and use coconut milk at home, but I still do miss cheese. That would be my guilty pleasure at the moment, only I can’t have it, so it’s more guilt-free!
What was the last amazing book you read?
The Room. I still haunts me. It’s tragic and compelling and a great book.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
My nighttime ritual includes reading just before I go to bed. I have the NOOK app on my iPad and that’s typically what I read on these days. If I don’t read just before bed, something feels off.
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m working on the next book in my Magical Dressmaking cozy mystery series. Book 4, A Custo-Fit Crime, comes out in July. It is a cozy mystery series which also takes place in small town Texas, and like Deceiving the Witch Next Door, it has a bit of magic woven in to make things interesting.

Of course! Here’s an excerpt:

Bloomington, Texas wasn’t far from Austin, but to Reid Malone, it might as well have been light years away. Thank God for the lake. No matter how much he hungered for city life, this place—especially on a day like today—was his solace.
He parked on the bluff in the trees near the old haunted fishing cabin, popped open a beer, and readied his fishing pole. Maybe it was college life and worrying only about himself that he had missed back when he was stuck in his hometown. Back here he had his dad and the bar to worry about. He needed to earn a little cash over the summer, but he was already counting the days till he could get back to the city and put his newly minted diploma to use.
Dark clouds pooled in the distance. A storm was coming in, and it made him breathe easier. There was nothing like the vast Texas sky. In the distance, loud rolling thunder cracked and flashes of lightning streaked through it. Before long, the sky would open, the rain would fall, and the temperature would drop twenty degrees in a matter of minutes. Being here helped put things in perspective for him. The big sky and the power of the storm helped him relax. When he spent time at the lake, he stopped taking things so seriously and the long summer months ahead seem manageable.
The thunder cracked again, and that’s when he saw her.
Storie Bell.
She tore over the dirt road in her daddy’s beat-up old truck, the tires kicking dirt until she skidded to a stop not a hundred yards from him. But she never looked his way. He cast out his line, just watching her. What was she was doing here by herself?
It took her a good while to get out of the cab, but when she did, he nearly dropped his pole. Jesus, she was gorgeous. He’d seen Storie around town a few times and he knew she was pretty in an offbeat way, but now? In her cutoff jeans and white T-shirt knotted below her breasts—luscious, beautiful breasts, from what he could see—she was all curves and flesh and bronzed skin. Her hair, like no color he’d ever seen, shimmered in the fading afternoon sunlight. The coppery tint was almost otherworldly, he thought, leaning forward in his lawn chair.
He’d heard tales about her strange behavior and quirky habits, but all he could think was that she was a damn siren. A girl next door who could bring a man to his knees with one crook of her finger.
She released the tailgate and climbed into the back of her daddy’s truck, standing on the edge, raising her arms like she was trying to harness the thunder that was slowly rolling in. At first he thought she was just trying to capture a breeze and stay cool in the humid July heat, but then the clouds moved faster and turned in the sky in time with her rotating hands. He couldn’t tell what she was up to, but a silent alarm sounded in his head. “What the hell?”
He was so enthralled that he finally gave up trying to fish. He tossed what was left of his beer into the garbage and moved into the shadows of the trees. She might need help, he reasoned. What woman came out to the lake in this kind of weather unless something was wrong?
His attention never wavered as he got closer. God, she was beautiful. And now he had the best view he could get out here in the open. He didn’t know her, and certainly wouldn’t act on his attraction for her, but hell if he didn’t want to memorize every last detail of her face and body now that he was seeing it spotlighted as she stood on the tailgate.
She moved like a blade of grass, softly swaying in the fading sunlight. Her arms stretched upward, her head tilted back. She stiffened, just for a split second, and a shudder passed through her. Thunder cracked overhead, a flash of lightning sparked through the dark clouds…was it seconds later?
He stared at the sky. That wasn’t right. The order was wrong. Lightning came first. Thunder came from the shock wave from the heat, then cooled off the lightning bolt.
Before he could wonder about it any more, Storie jumped down from the tailgate and plowed headlong into the lake. Somewhere in the distance, a cat wailed, as if sounding the alarm. Shit. Reid jumped up, starting toward the water’s edge. “Christ, woman, what are you doing? You don’t swim during a lightning storm!”
She kept going, striding forward against the force of the water. He froze, waiting. Watching. She stalked through the muck, finally bringing her arms overhead and diving under the water.
A network of light broke through the clouds, a crash of thunder following. The right order this time. Maybe he’d imagined the reversal.
His breath clogged his throat as he counted to ten in his head, waiting for her to break the surface. Ten came and went. And then fifteen. He searched the dark water. Where the hell was she?
Something had to have really upset her for her to come up to the lake alone with a storm brewing, and what in the damnation had she been trying to do up there on the tailgate? Had she been drinking? Was she trying to get electrocuted? Could she even swim? Oh, Christ, if she were drowning…
Without another thought, he ripped off his shirt as he raced to the water’s edge.
He just hoped they both didn’t get electrocuted.
He dove under the water, but it was brown and murky and he couldn’t see. He swam, breaking the surface to get some air, then ducking down again to keep searching. Above him, the sky flashed with light. The boom of the thunder traveled through the water like a muffled drum.
For a brief moment, the lightning allowed him to see under the water, but there was no sign of her. Panic swarmed his cells until he could hardly think. He was too late.
But then his arm brushed something that recoiled from his touch. Storie!
He kicked off the soft, smooth bottom, pushing himself in the direction he thought she’d gone. He peered in front of him, frantically searching until he made contact again. This time, he shot out of the water, dragging in a ragged breath and getting his bearings.
The clouds had grown darker, but it was still light enough to see. Bubbles popped where he thought she was. So she’d come up for air. He lunged, but then stopped as her head appeared, breaking through the surface of the water. And then, just as he’d imagined it, she rose like a mermaid, water cascading off her dark hair, off her skin, off the T-shirt clinging to her body.
“You’re okay.” He exhaled, catching his breath and reorganizing his thoughts.
Wide-eyed, she gasped, turning to him. He wasn’t positive, but her eyes looked red-rimmed, as if she’d been crying. She blinked and sank back down so that only her shoulders and head were above water. Her eyebrows knitted together and she dipped her chin, peering at him. “Reid Malone? Is that you?” She didn’t wait for an answer before asking, “What in tarnation are you doing? You scared me half to death!”
That made two of them. “I thought you were drowning.”
“I wasn’t.” She’d reached the part of the lake where she could stand. This time when she rose from the water, she was like a phoenix, all fire and glory against the backdrop of the orange, yellow, and red streaking the horizon. She walked toward her truck, water dripping from her cutoffs, from the white T-shirt still knotted at her rib cage.
“Yeah, I can see that,” he said, coming out of the water behind her. He swallowed, stifling every bit of his physical reaction to seeing her. “Next time you’re not drowning,” he said with a low growl, “I’ll just leave you to it.”
She stopped at the tailgate, putting one hand on the edge of the beat-up truck, and then, like the damn siren he knew she was, she turned to face him, catching his stare. “You do that, Reid,” she said, real slow, her soft Southern accent as luscious as her body. She hestitated for a moment, her eyes glistening, then as if she’d bolstered her strength, her gaze flicked to his chest—and below, before rising to his eyes again. “And you can just take yourself a good long look, because this has been a crap day. I’m leaving Bloomington in the morning, and this is the last you’ll ever see of me.”
He heard what she said. Crap day. Leaving Bloomington. But all he could do was swallow and drink her in. Long legs, curvy hips in those low-rise shorts heavy with water, the corners of the pockets slipping down farther than the edge of the shorts themselves. And that T-shirt, sticking to her body, plastered against her dark, taut nipples and the curves of her breasts.
Oh yeah, he took a good long look—every bit of her seared into his brain, from the light dusting of freckles across her nose to the tips of her toes.
And everything in between.

Blurb:
Down-on-her-luck witch Storie Bell never thought the biggest threat to her future would be Reid Malone, the very man she’d run from years before. After striking it rich in Texas shale, he’s back in town, and he seems hell-bent on getting in the way of her bookstore’s grand opening.
A witch trying to blend in in a small southern town is hard enough, but now he’s seriously testing her strict No Kissing Mortal Men policy.
But even witches don’t have a spell for that.
Reid knows there’s much more to Storie than meets the eye. But right now he has only one mission: to infiltrate her shop so he can snatch the elusive secret ingredient to his father’s million-dollar moonshine recipe.
Once he does, he can go back to the city and get out of his small hometown, a place in which he has no future. But as the days go by, he can’t help falling for Storie in every way…and every encounter brings him closer to finding out what happens when you try to deceive a witch.

Paranormal romance has long been a genre grounded in heavy world-building and dark, tortured heroes. We love those traditional paranormals at Entangled and have an amazing selection under our Select and Edge imprints.
Book series like Rosalie Lario’s Demons of Infernum , Tiffany Allee’s Files from the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency books, and Nina Croft’s brand new Order novels are just a few of Entangled's offerings.
But if there’s one thing we know about paranormal romance, it’s that it breaks rules. All kinds of rules. And that’s where the Covet imprint comes in. Covets are firmly grounded in the contemporary world, but each novel brings in supernatural twists, breaking the contemporary and paranormal rules, alike.
Covets have all the sexiness, emotion, and happily ever after that readers have come to expect and love from Entangled. With our launch this month, we’re bringing five titles to the forefront of this rule-breaking imprint. Greek gods, witches, demons, shifters, vampires … there’s something for everyone.
To find out more about our launch titles, chat with authors, participate in special events, and to find out what books you’ll be coveting next, visit the Entangled website , follow us on Twitter , and LIKE our Facebook page . We have lots of exciting events coming up, and Round Two of our launch in May!
Take a look at the first Covets, and start adding to your TBR pile.

Rubenesque Rapture Playlist

Thanks so much for having me here at Fang-Tastic Books!
In Rubenesque Rapture, Shayne and Anna are experiencing a landslide of emotions. We have Anna, a woman that just lost the mother that meant everything to her. She is grieving, terrified, and hopeless. Then this gorgeous, powerful man walks into her life and not only saves her, but shows an intense sexual interest in her that her past has not prepared her for.
Then we have Shayne. Shayne has experienced just about everything life has to offer.... Repeatedly. In some ways you might even say he's a true cynic. Being alive for several lifetimes, he's had plenty of sex with plenty of gorgeous women. Yet here is this plus-sized female, and he can't get her out of his mind. His interest quickly goes from passing to have to have. She's driving him wild with lust, yet he can't get her to yield. It's enough to drive any Endurer to desperate measures!
I wanted to share a music playlist that you can listen to while reading the book. Some of them are ones I listened to while writing, while others just seem to fit. I listed chapter suggestions with these, but it's definitely not set in stone. Some of the songs are appropriate in other areas of the book as well.
Rubenesque Rapture Playlist:Auld Lang Syne (Prologue)Metallica - Fade To Black (Chapter 1) The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony (Chapter 2)Chicago - The Glory of Love (Chapter 3)Shinedown - 45 (Chapter 4)Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer (Chapter 5)Staind - Right Here (Chapter 6)Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say (Chapter 7)Pink - Who Knew (Chapter 8) Daughtry - Home (Chapter 9)The Fray - How To Save a Life (Chapter 10)Sarah Brightman - Deliver Me (Chapter 11)Coldplay - Clocks (Epilogue)
As you can see, it's quite a variety! What are some of your favorite songs from the list?
I really appreciated the chance to be here today. I'm going to be checking back to interact with anyone that posts a comment. Thanks again for taking the time to participate!

I've always had a love of the paranormal and romance, and I'm a true romantic at heart. I love taking romance to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The hotter the better! You're going to see some pretty wild and crazy stuff in my books, so be prepared!

Richart d’Alençon, the hero of “In Still Darkness”, is a two-hundred-and-thirty-year-old immortal who can teleport. When he rescues Jenna McBride from the clutches of psychotic vampires, he is rewarded with a scorching kiss. One he can’t forget no matter how often he reminds himself that immortal/mortal relationships never work. Richart is completely captivated. So captivated, in fact, that he endeavors to date Jenna. Or court her, as he puts it. He is a couple of centuries old. Unfortunately, Richart is pretty rusty in the dating department. (It’s been several decades.) And keeping his vampire hunting profession and his immortality a secret isn’t exactly easy when her every touch inflames him and makes his eyes glow. :-)

Four of today's most exciting paranormal authors take readers into the thrilling realm of vampires, immortals, and other supernatural beings with a thirst for illicit desire...
Out Of Control by Alexandra Ivy
Ph.D student Angela Locke has a crush on her sexy professor, Dr. Nikolo Bartrev. When she learns he's actually a Sentinel with extraordinary powers, she joins forces with him to catch a psychopath. But soon, their hottest pursuit is of each other...
Ties That Bind by Nina Bangs
Cassie Tyler agrees to sub for her friend at the funeral home where she works. But she gets more than she bargained for when a group of men attack her and a vampire comes to her rescue. . .
In Still Darkness by Dianne Duvall
Immortal Richart d'Alençon can't forget the woman who rewarded him with a sensuous kiss after he saved her from a trio of vampires. While Richart knows that loving a human can only bring trouble, the taste of forbidden lust is too great to resist. . .
High Stakes by Hannah Jayne
When vampire fashionista Nina LaShay's design contest rival is found dead, she's the prime suspect. Sexy photographer Pike is number two. He's the kind of man who makes Nina salivate. But will she have to reveal herself to have him--and to save them both? Or does Pike have a secret of his own?
Praise for PREDATORYand “In Still Darkness”
“These four fabulous authors give us lovely little tastes of their vampire worlds. These stories will be especially appealing to fans of the various series that these shorts fit into. It is always fun to get an additional glimpse into our favorite universes.”— RT Book Reviews
“Readers will appreciate the rich characterizations and kick-butt action of Duvall’s “In Still Darkness,” as Richart d’Alençon, a 200-year-old Guardian, woos charming Jenna McBride with warmth and passion while keeping his vampire-hunting life secret.”— Publishers Weekly
Excerpt
Richart stumbled backward and wrapped his arms around the woman to keep her from falling.
Clinging to the front of his shirt, she buried her face in his chest. “Is he gone?”
“Yes,” he responded, surprised she was so coherent. When vampires and immortals turned, glands formed above the retractable fangs they grew that released a chemical much like GHB under the pressure of a bite. So she should be slurring her words.
Hell, he was surprised she still stood.
“What about the others?”
“They’re gone,” he assured her. Or they would be soon. A quick glance confirmed that they were shriveling up like mummies as the virus, unable to heal their wounds fast enough to keep them from dying, devoured them from the inside out in a desperate bid to live. By the time it finished, nothing would remain of them save the clothing and jewelry they wore.
Weaving on her feet, the woman straightened and looked up at him. She couldn’t be much more than five feet tall and he was six foot one. “Y-your eyes are glowing.”
Her pupils were dilated, blocking out almost all of the pale green, leaving only a few flakes of brown.
Richart retracted his fangs. “Yes. I know it looks bad, but—”
She shook her head. “I think they’re beautiful.”
Was that the drug talking? Or did she really think so?
“You saved me,” she said, awe and gratitude in her melodic voice. Loosening her death grip on his shirt, she cupped his face in both hands.
His heart skipped.
When was the last time a woman had touched his face so tenderly?
When was the last time a woman had touched him at all? Other than his sister punching him in the shoulder, doing her damnedest to kick his ass when they sparred, or doling out a hug here or there, he honestly couldn’t remember.
“Thank you,” the woman whispered. Rising onto her toes, she drew his head down and brushed her lips against his.
The contact hit him like an electrical shock. His heart began to pound as she tilted her head and increased the pressure, brushing, stroking. She combed her fingers through his short, black hair, sending shivers through him.
He parted his lips, met her tongue with his when she boldly thrust hers forward.
Pure heat.
She leaned into him, clutched him tighter.
His body hardened. His breath shortened. His arms tightened around her.
Her knees went limp. Her lips tore away from his as her head fell back. Her eyes closed. Her mouth hung open, lips pink from kissing him.
Richart stared down at her as his pulse pounded in his ears.
Yeah. She was out.

Interview : Super Dark by Tanith Morse

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Hey guys! My name is Tanith Morse and I’m the author of YA trilogy Super Dark. I’m from the UK and live in a lovely place called Wandsworth. I’m an avid reader and a serious chocoholic. I write paranormal romance because it’s one of my favorite genres.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Super Dark is a love story about two kids called Sam and Elliot who are thrown into a terrifying world fraught with danger and intrigue. There are many themes explored in the book—guilt, passion and redemption are the main ones that spring to mind. You might say I specialize in dark characters. My stories are very character driven and when I write, I let the hero and heroine dictate to me which path the plot should take. In Super Dark, the good guys are not completely good and the bad guys are not completely bad—something that happens in real life.
Do you write in different genres?
I’ve always wanted to do a trilogy and experiment with different genres so I saw this as the perfect opportunity. I wrote book one as an urban thriller, book two as a gothic romance and book three as a Roman noir. All the same characters feature in each book, but you will notice a change of tone within the stories—something I did on purpose to ramp up the tension.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
When I’m not writing I work as a freelance film director. I also enjoy seeing family, eating chocolate and reading.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
My favorite scene in the book is when Lee paints Sam’s portrait. It’s the first time that Sam completely lays herself bare to him. She really opens up and the emotion in that scene is just so raw and beautiful. Lee has a way of teasing the truth out of Sam, and once she starts talking, she can’t stop. All that hurt just flows out of her and as a result, the two of them grow much closer. Easily my favorite scene in the novel.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
I wouldn’t advise reading the books as stand alones. Without reading the first book, a lot of stuff won’t make sense so with Super Dark, it’s definitely best to start at the beginning and work your way through to the end.
What was the last amazing book you read?
I just finished reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King. After more than thirty years, that man is still on top of his game. I literally lost sleep reading that book. I’ve always been fascinated by the conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination, and the level of detail King went into was astounding … all that historical research must have taken years and yet the ideas are still so fresh and unique. Definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
Actually, my favorite place to read is on a train. There are a lot of distractions at home, so a long train journey is the perfect time to get cozy and catch up on my reading.
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m working on a book about a boy who can speak to dogs. It’s a dark thriller with romantic elements once again set in south London. I’m really excited about it.

Read a Sneak Peak of Fiery Edge of Steel: Win a $25 GC or Signed ARC
In writing this book, I was inspired by a number of things, among them an old French imposter case, two children's songs, and a fairy tale. I wanted to explore the themes of love, betrayal, knowledge, death, and duty. To set up those themes I could think of no better way to open this book than to recreate a Haljan version of the 16th century execution of Arnaud du Tilh, the man who impersonated the French peasant Martin Guerre.
Fiery Edge of Steelis the second book in the Noon Onyx series, which is genre-bending fantasy with elements of mystery and romance. The setting is post-apocalyptic, but it's not dystopian fiction. In fact, Armageddon is old news. The demons won and life has continued, albeit in a world that's more dark and dangerous than before.
In Dark Light of Day, the first book in the series, Nouiomo "Noon" Onyx, a 21 year old post grad magic user, had to choose between death or training to become a demon peacekeeper or Maegester. In Fiery Edge of Steel, Noon faces a different question.
I wanted to try something new for Fiery Edge of Steel's release. So with the help of participating bloggers, Roxanne Rhoads of Bewitching Book Tours, and my publisher (who provided the ARCs), I decided to give everyone an exclusive sneak peek at part of Chapter 1. There are a total of six parts. I'm giving away six signed ARCs of Fiery Edge of Steel (US only; one during each post) and a $25 eGift Certificate to the bookstore of the winner's choice (international). The best way to follow the tour is to start at the beginning so you can read the excerpts in order. Check Bewitching Book Tours website or mine (www.jillarcher.com) for the full schedule and list of participants.
Thank you for letting me share Chapter 1 of Fiery Edge of Steel with you.

Starting today and going through May 11 each day a new excerpt is being revealed from Chapter One of Fiery Edge of Steal. Stop by each site to read a new sneak peak and enter the giveaway.
Chapter One Part One
In pre-Apocalyptic times humans stoned their criminals to death by throwing rocks, sharp pieces of metal, and other debris at the wrongdoer until they were so bloody and beaten, death was inevitable. It was said that, until jaws were broken or skulls were smashed, all wrongdoers cried for it to end.
Everyone got their wish.
Stoning demons is impossible, of course. Trying to kill a demon by throwing rocks at it would be like trying to take down an alligator by blowing soap bubbles at it. So, in modern times, public executions call for a Carne Vale—a “farewell to the flesh” ceremony where waning magic is thrown instead of stones. The practice is even more brutal than its ancient counterpart, but just as cowardly.
Ari Carmine and I stood elbow to elbow in Timothy’s Square, waiting for the awful thing to begin. Beside me, Ari squeezed my hand. He likely meant the gesture to be reassuring, but it made me feel trapped and I pulled my hand free. I glanced up at him, quirking my mouth in a half smile meant as an apology. He looked down at me, expressionless, but I could feel his signature, that wispy magical aurora that allowed uncloaked waning magic users to sense one another’s presence. Ari’s signature was warm, as always, but today it was laced with blistery bits, as if the glowing embers of a dying fire had been kicked at me. It made standing next to him uncomfortable.
Around us, the crowd of Hyrkes—humans with no magic—continued to build as students from both St. Lucifer’s and the Joshua School gathered. The heat from the unrelenting overhead sun was oppressive. Since there were no trees in Timothy’s Square, there was no shade. There was no cover. Nowhere to hide from what was to come.
Peering over my shoulder to check for possible unobserved routes of escape, I made the mistake of catching Sasha de Rocca’s gaze. Sasha was a distant cousin of mine, but that didn’t mean we were close.
He sneered openly at me.
“Dressed for a funeral, Noon? Do you really think mourning is appropriate for a Carne Vale?”
Automatically, I glanced down at my indigo sheath. In Halja, midnight blue—the color of the sky when Lucifer was struck with the lance that killed him over two millennia ago—was the color of mourning.
“The thing deserves to die,” Sasha said, his low voice burbling up out of his thick barrel chest. Suddenly his cold, crinkly eyes and dirty blond beard seemed far too close. I stepped back.
It wasn’t that I was afraid of Sasha. My power was far greater than his. But, unlike Sasha, I hated using mine, and he knew it. I hadn’t thrown magic since last semester when my demon client had almost killed me. The St. Lucifer’s faculty had given me leave to table my magic use over the semester break, but now that classes were back on, my “recovery” was officially over. I was expected to come out of my self-imposed dormancy today, and I was expected to come out of it so that I could participate in the one thing I abhorred.
Killing.

Book Description:
Lucifer and his army triumphed at Armageddon, leaving humans and demons living in uncertain peace based on sacrifice and strict laws. It is up to those with mixed demon and human blood, the Host, to prevent society from falling into anarchy.
Noon Onyx is the first female Host in memory to wield the destructive waning magic that is used to maintain order among the demons. Her unique abilities, along with a lack of control and a reluctance to kill, have branded her as an outsider among her peers. Only her powerful lover, Ari Carmine, and a roguish and mysterious Angel, Rafe Sinclair, support her unconventional ways.
When Noon is shipped off to a remote outpost to investigate several unusual disappearances, a task that will most likely involve trying and killing the patron demon of that area, it seems Luck is not on her side. But when the outpost settlers claim that an ancient and evil foe has stepped out of legend to commit the crimes, Noon realizes that she could be facing something much worse than she ever imagined.…

Book Description:
Armageddon is over. The demons won. And yet somehow…the world has continued. Survivors worship patron demons under a draconian system of tributes and rules. These laws keep the demons from warring among themselves, the world from slipping back into chaos.
Noon Onyx grew up on the banks of the river Lethe, daughter of a prominent politician, and a descendant of Lucifer’s warlords. Noon has a secret—she was born with waning magic, the dark, destructive, fiery power that is used to control demons and maintain the delicate peace among them. But a woman with waning magic is unheard of and some will consider her an abomination.
Noon is summoned to attend St. Lucifer’s, a school of demon law. She must decide whether to declare her powers there…or attempt to continue hiding them, knowing the price for doing so may be death. And once she meets the forbiddingly powerful Ari Carmine—who suspects Noon is harboring magic as deadly as his own—Noon realizes there may be more at stake than just her life.

Jill Archer is the author of Dark Light of Day, the first book in the Noon Onyx series. Raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jill now lives in rural Maryland with her two children and her husband, who is a recreational pilot. She blogs about books, movies, interesting people, and various weekend adventures.
