Interview : Super Dark by Tanith Morse

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Hey guys! My name is Tanith Morse and I’m the author of YA trilogy Super Dark. I’m from the UK and live in a lovely place called Wandsworth. I’m an avid reader and a serious chocoholic. I write paranormal romance because it’s one of my favorite genres.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Super Dark is a love story about two kids called Sam and Elliot who are thrown into a terrifying world fraught with danger and intrigue. There are many themes explored in the book—guilt, passion and redemption are the main ones that spring to mind. You might say I specialize in dark characters. My stories are very character driven and when I write, I let the hero and heroine dictate to me which path the plot should take. In Super Dark, the good guys are not completely good and the bad guys are not completely bad—something that happens in real life.
Do you write in different genres?
I’ve always wanted to do a trilogy and experiment with different genres so I saw this as the perfect opportunity. I wrote book one as an urban thriller, book two as a gothic romance and book three as a Roman noir. All the same characters feature in each book, but you will notice a change of tone within the stories—something I did on purpose to ramp up the tension.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
When I’m not writing I work as a freelance film director. I also enjoy seeing family, eating chocolate and reading.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
My favorite scene in the book is when Lee paints Sam’s portrait. It’s the first time that Sam completely lays herself bare to him. She really opens up and the emotion in that scene is just so raw and beautiful. Lee has a way of teasing the truth out of Sam, and once she starts talking, she can’t stop. All that hurt just flows out of her and as a result, the two of them grow much closer. Easily my favorite scene in the novel.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
I wouldn’t advise reading the books as stand alones. Without reading the first book, a lot of stuff won’t make sense so with Super Dark, it’s definitely best to start at the beginning and work your way through to the end.

What was the last amazing book you read?
I just finished reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King. After more than thirty years, that man is still on top of his game. I literally lost sleep reading that book. I’ve always been fascinated by the conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination, and the level of detail King went into was astounding … all that historical research must have taken years and yet the ideas are still so fresh and unique. Definitely one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
Actually, my favorite place to read is on a train. There are a lot of distractions at home, so a long train journey is the perfect time to get cozy and catch up on my reading.
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m working on a book about a boy who can speak to dogs. It’s a dark thriller with romantic elements once again set in south London. I’m really excited about it.

Tanith Morse grew up in Wandsworth, south London. From a young age she developed a great love of horror films and gothic romances. Her favorite director is Tim Burton and her favorite authors include Charlotte Bronte, Stephenie Meyer and Suzanne Collins. When she isn’t writing, Tanith enjoys directing short films for the festival circuit and looking after her cat, Mambo.
