A country girl born and bred, Dawn Luedecke has spent most of her life surrounded by horses, country folk, and the wild terrain of Nevada, Idaho and Montana. As a child she would spend many afternoons reading books, watching western classics, and Rogers and Hammerstein movies.
When she grew up she decided to leave the quiet country life for a chance to find adventure by serving a successful tour in the United States Coast Guard. During that time she found her soul mate (and alpha male) and started a family and writing career. She’d come home from work to find Eleanora sprawled face down on the Oriental carpet in the séance room, candles smoking black gouts of greasy flame. If there’d been clients, they were nowhere to be found.Her mother had regained consciousness, but that had been about all. Cassie had known better than to lug her around to a bunch of other doctors with their uncomfortable questions and pained silences after the first one had asked, “Your mother does whatfor a living?”Cassie dragged herself away from the portrait. When she was a little girl, she’d believed her mother’s painted eyes were the gateway to a magical world. About the Author: 

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. 

It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. 

Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers her solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. 

Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

An interview with Eustice. Main character of Alex Gulczynski's book Eustice (surprise title!), the first in the three part Reaper Corps series.
Mysterious Questioner: Eustice? That's fairly unique name. Where did you get it from?
Eustice: Name questions? Is that where this interview is going? If so, that's pretty lame start. I don't know where my name came from. I was born. It was stamped on my head. Now I'm here answering banal questions. Next.
MQ: Okay. Moving right along. Tell us a little about yourself.
E: What's to tell? It's a story as old as time. Girl dies, girl gets trapped in the afterlife, girl becomes the center point of the eternal war between angels and demons. You know, same-oh-same-oh. What? That never happen to you?
MQ: Not that I can remember.
E: Great. I guess it's just me then.
MQ: That sounds pretty rough.
E: Sure. It can be. But I've come to love that special squish a demon's head makes as I plunge my scythe into. There is a real art in making sure the spatter doesn't hit you. You really have to swing it just so. Is that weird? It didn't sound weird in my head but now that it's out I'm not so sure. Oh man, this is what my life has come to.
MQ: Well, it sounds like you've had to develop a special set of skills?
E: Yeah, I suppose I have. You don't really know what you're capable of until you're thrust into it. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.
MQ: Why is that?
E:...I don't know if I've become a better person. Maybe it's better not know what you are capable of. There's darkness in everyone. Even in the angels. I've learned that now. God, this whole thing is messed up.
MQ: What whole thing?
E: This! All of it. Life, the universe, everything. It's all messed up. You expect some cosmic plan. Fate or something. You would expect the ones in charge are better than you, but when it comes down to it they're not. When it comes down to it, it's just you. You've got to be strong.
MQ: That sounds lonely.
E: Yeah. Yeah. You know I don't want to talk about this anymore. Time's a wasting and you aren't helping me. I'm gonna go. Someone has to clean up the mess everyone else has made.
MQ: And that person is you?
E: Well, I don't see you doing it. I'm outta here. My scythe arm is getting itchy.

Interview and Giveaway with Dana Michelle Burnett

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I’m actually a very boring person, all I ever do is write and play #DanceMom to my daughter (Don’t believe everything you see on television). I’ve always been sort of dark and twisty, so as a writer, the paranormal is just a natural fit. I honestly believe that there is more to the world than what science recognizes.
What inspired you to write this book?
I was actually inspired by My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. I watched a few episodes and became fascinated by the Irish Traveller culture. I did some research into it and then into some Irish legends and before I knew it, I had the outline for Once.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Once is about a young woman named Harmony Jacobson that falls in love with an Irish Traveller named Kieran, that is part of an ancient, almost immortal, tribe called the Tuatha de Danann. Of course, being almost immortal, you know  Kieran and his family have made some enemies.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
There is a scene between Harmony and Kieran at a pond where she talks about how you never see butterflies anymore and how she misses them. He makes a few appear and it’s the first time that he reveals his abilities, but to me it was just the gesture of doing something just to make her smile that really stuck out to me.
“It was,” I said. “Have you ever noticed you never see butterflies that much anymore? I miss them.”Oh God... That was a stupid thing to say...Kieran pulled at my hand to stop me just as we reached the edge of the trees.“Is something wrong?” I asked as I turned around.“No,” Kieran said as he took my other hand as well and then tilted his head back and closed his eyes. “Just wait.”Suddenly, into the air rose a cloud of orange and black butterflies. They fluttered all around us, landed on my arms and shoulders.I looked at him amazed, “How did you do that?”Kieran stepped forward and brought his lips down on mine in a feathery soft kiss. When I opened my eyes, the butterflies were gone.“Magic,” he whispered and backed away.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
For this book, I researched the Irish Traveller culture as much as possible, but they are a very secretive culture. The one thing that I could find LOTS of information on was the Dale Farm land dispute. I was horrified by the comments that people would leave about how “the only good traveller, is a dead traveller”, bomb the whole place and be done with it, and why didn’t they just move into homes like “normal people”.  The amount of hate really shocked me.  It was like looking back in time to the way my Native American ancestors were treated and from that point on, I knew that even though my book was fiction, I wanted to touch on that.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Just like with my Spiritus series, my goal is that the reader could start anywhere, but in Spiritus series the concept was ghosts and reincarnation, this time it’s a little more complicated than that.  It’s hard to get so much back information into each book without it sounding like a recap.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
The strangest writing ritual I have is that I write everything out in spiral notebooks first, then I use a talk to text program to get it into Word, and then I do my first edit. I don’t know why, but I can’t make the thoughts flow as easily if I just type it directly into the computer. There is something about pen to paper that just works for me. I guess another odd thing would be that I write “out of order”. I may write the ending first, then the beginning, and then the middle.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I of course love to read, but I’m also into flower gardening (so nerdy, I know), and I LOVE old movies. Yes, I’m that odd person under fifty that can quote long passages from Vivien Leigh movies and can name all of Elizabeth Taylor’s husbands. My biggest passion though has to be spending time with my daughter. Since my husband’s death a few years ago, she has become the center of my world and I love getting to watch her grow up and develop into her own little person.
What was the last amazing book you read?
I really enjoyed Flutter by Melissa Andrea. I read it during a dance convention. I had random time in between taking my daughter back forth to class and bringing her food. It was a great story and easy to dive right back into no matter how many times I had to stop and start.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I live out in the middle of the woods and I love to sit out on the back porch and read. My second favorite place to read would have to be in bed.
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m currently working on Far Away, the second book in the Gypsy Fairy Tale series. I’m also in the research phase of another book centered around a pair of witches with a rather unexpected bond that goes back centuries. I definitely very excited about the upcoming year!

I locked the back door and then went to the counter and opened the register. I thumbed through the receipts and placed them under the drawer. It all seemed in order, nothing that couldn’t wait until morning. I grabbed my keys as another rumble of thunder came and shook the very walls.

A loud bang made me jump and drop everything.

What the hell was that?

My heart was pounding as I stood in the center of the room. I waited, listening and trembling, until I heard the sound again.

This time it was more of a slamming sound. I looked around straining my ears until I heard it again, and looked up where it sounded like it came from to see the upper window had come unlatched.

Of course...

I sighed, drop my keys on the counter, and went back into the store room. I was dead tired, tripping over boxes and bumping into barrels as I pulled the ladder out from the back corner.

Every muscle in my body ached as I dragged it out to the front room and under the window. I climbed up, only to realize that it was too short to reach the latch.

Why can’t anything ever just be easy?

I was too tired to go out back into the barn and search in the dark for a taller ladder. Stupidly, I climbed the remaining two rungs and balanced on the very top.

Stretching up on my toes and wobbling, I reached for the latch and grasped it as the bell on the front door rattled.

There was no time to think, but yet it all seemed to happen in slow motion. I heard the ladder crash to the floor, I felt my stomach rise up to my throat as I fell, and then I stopped, cradled in a blur of black that smelled of clover.

There was a low murmur of a voice I did not recognize in my ear, speaking words I did not understand. I wiggled free of the strangers grasp, wobbling on my feet as I tried to stand.Looking up, I was staring face-to-face with that younger man from the parade. He was breathtaking to see up close with full lips and overpowering emerald eyes. I swallowed a few times, trying to remember how to even form words.

“I’m sorry,” I somehow managed to mumble as I backed away.

He cocked one dark eyebrow and pulled those pouty lips into a smirk.“You are apologizing for falling then?”

His voice was enchanting. There was a beautiful Irish lilt to it, but also something else, something hypnotic and mesmerizing that made it difficult to think clearly.

“I um... I guess so.” I stammered, almost tripping over myself to get behind the counter and put some distance between us.

He moved closer, his steps graceful and light as a feather.

“Are you afraid of me for some reason?”

“Of course not,” I said with a nervous giggle, hating the sound of my own voice. “But why are you here?”

“Ah, so it is like that is it?”

I could feel the heat coming to my face, “No, I just mean, it’s so late in the storm coming in...”
“Horse and mule feed.”

“What?”

He smiled; it was a quick flash of white teeth in his tanned face.

“I’m here for horse and mule feed,” he repeated. “Preferably with molasses.”

“Seriously?”

“You sell feed, do you not?”

“Of course.”

He raised his eyebrow again, “Don’t tell me you’re closed.”

“Yes, but it’s fine.” I said, fidgeting from one foot to the other. “Well, what I mean is that it’s the least I can do.”

He kept looking at me with those amazing green eyes and amused expression.

I pointed to the bags stacked in the corner, “Just go ahead and take what you need.”

“I can’t do that Miss," he said with a shake of his head. “I can’t be taking what I haven’t paid for.”

I didn’t know how to react to his quick change in mood. It was almost like I had offended him or something, but something about it had me wondering how fast the police could get here.

“I’m sorry,” I said quickly and opened up the receipt book. “How many bags do you need?”

“Just two.”

“Okay,” I said and went back to writing out his order, anything to give me something to do so that I wouldn’t have to look at him.

He moved closer, shadowing the counter.

“My name is Kieran,” he said in his musical voice. “Just in case you were curious.”I didn’t look up, I couldn’t, my hands were trembling and I knew my cheeks were flaming. It would only be worse if I looked up.

Is he actually flirting with me?

He rested his elbows on the counter, close enough that I could smell the rich clover smell again.

“And what would your name be?” He asked, almost teasing me.

“Harmony,” I answered in a shaky voice. “Harmony Jacobson.”

“Well, don’t we have a pair of unusual names?”

I didn’t answer him. To save myself the embarrassment, I pretended that writing out his receipt took all of my concentration.

“I’m just making polite conversation here,” he teased. “You don’t have to be so embarrassed.”

When I looked up, he was staring at me with those intense green eyes. I couldn’t speak, all that I could do was take his money and hand him his receipt.

He went over to the corner and picked up the two bags of feed as if they weighed nothing, hoisting both up on one shoulder. Stopping at the door, he looked back and gave me one last dazzling smile.

“I shall be seeing you, Harmony Jacobson.”

I remained behind the counter after he left; my heart was beating so fast I was afraid to move from that spot.

Did that really just happen?

After what seemed like a long while, my pulse finally stopped thundering in my ears. I was able to let go of the counter edge and walk out to the fallen ladder in the center of the room.I dragged it back into the storeroom and leaned it against the wall, knowing that it was not where it originally was, but not really caring. My earlier exhaustion was now completely mind numbing. All that I wanted to do was get to bed.

I picked up my keys, switched off the lights and stepped outside. As I locked the door, I could hear the music drifting over from across the street. Even though the rest of the town was dark and quiet, the camp at the fairgrounds was alive with lights and activity.It was like an entirely different world, brought right here to our tiny little town.

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I'm passionate about writing, especially fantasy and horror fiction.  I love reading fantasy -  magic, made-up worlds, mythical creatures - so I had a go at writing it, and got hooked. The dark aspects of the human psyche are fascinating, and I enjoy exploring them in fiction, which gives my fantasy a dark slant and sometimes tilts it towards horror.
What is it about the paranormal that fascinates you so much?  
The ambiguity of what is and isn't real intrigues me. What if what we believe to be real is not?  What if creatures we humans believe to have invented - vampires, werewolves, dragons - really exist? 
What if demons are real? To what extent are they manifestations of the darkness of our own soul?
Is magic real? Although most people in the modern western world deny its existence, most humans all over the world throughout history have believed. Who is right? What if magic is a scientific phenomenon that's still waiting to be discovered? If magic is real, how might it work? What skills might be needed to harness its force? What dangers lie in its abuse?
The fiction possibilities are delicious.
What inspired you to write this book?
I was staying in a ger (yurt) at the edge of the Gobi desert in Mongolia when I the idea struck. It was a vague idea at first - two people who hate each other must become allies to survive, and although they have previously betrayed and harmed each other they must now depend on each other and learn to trust.
The novel also explores the theme of how we're not responsible for what fate deals us, but we're responsible for how we deal with it.
Further inspiration also came from ancient cultures (especially Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Persians and Hittites), from places where I've lived and travelled (in Central Asia, North Africa, Middle East) - including, of course, Mongolia.
Please tell us about Storm Dancer
Storm Dancer is a dark epic fantasy novel, a story of war, ambition, demons, prophecy, magic, courage, redemption and sacrifice.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Storm Dancer is set in a fantasy world inspired by the Bronze Age period and the Middle Eastern region, so I used traditional Arabic, Turkish, Hebrew and Persian names,  and also some ancient historical names. Some names I made up, and some I used because the characters told me so.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Dahoud is a troubled hero with a dark past. He seeks to atone for the terrible deeds he committed as a siege commander, and to build a new life of humility and peace. Ruling the land he once devastated, how can he keep the secret of who he really is? Possessed by a demon that tempts him back into his old ways, how long can he resist the lure? Dahoud fights to protect his people from war's violence - but how can he shield the woman he loves from the evil inside him?
Dahoud was challenging to write, because he didn't reveal his true nature from the start. I had almost finished the first draft before I found out that he was possessed by a demon. That changed everything, and I had to rewrite the whole book. He also pretended to be socially naive, and I believed it for a while and wrote the book accordingly, until I caught on that he had fooled me. Much later, he revealed the nature of his obsession, and finally he confessed just how dark his past was, which meant several more rewrites.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Writing Merida was fun. She's a lovely woman, warm, compassionate, serious, honest and resourceful, but also tight about principles and prudish. I had wicked fun putting her principles to the test and making her do the things she swore she would never do.
For example, when she learns bellydancing in the harem, she asserts that she would never perform in public or let men see her dance. Later, her only chance to escape captivity is by posing as a tavern entertainer and bellydance for the audience. Watching her squirm, then brace herself to push past her own boundaries was interesting. 
She is certain she would never take a human life - but then the lives of a thousand people depend on whether she kills the enemy leader. Will she do it?
Of course she swears never to forgive Dahoud for what he did to her. But perhaps she will... after she gets her own revenge.

How Being a Musician has Made me a Better Writer with Aubrie Dionne

1.      Music has taught me patience, hard work and discipline. Practicing an instrument is like exercising- you don’t see the rewards right away. It takes a good week of long tones to finally start sounding stronger at all and years to get the fuzziness out of your tone. It wasn’t until Grad school-twelve years of playing- that I started to achieve the clear, resonant flute tone that I have today by changing small things with the shape and size of my mouth, my lips, and my chest cavity. So, if anything, music has taught me that patience, hard work, and discipline will yield results sooner or later- you just have to keep working at it.
2.      Music has taught me how much time you really need to invest be a pro. I just read an article in Flute Talk magazine- yup there’s such a thing- about this conservatory teacher who asks his students to practice 20 hours a week- that’s like 3 hours a day! If you truly want to sound professional, than you need to spend A LOT of time with your instrument. I have to practice an hour or two a day just to maintain the level that I’m at for rehearsals and teaching.
The same goes for writing. 500 words a day isn’t going to cut it. Right now I dedicate 2-3 hours a day to my writing, and finally, I’m starting to see results.
3.      Music has taught me how to express emotion. The tools you use with music are different than with writing, but you need emotion in both just the same. With music, you use vibrato-waves in the sound, dynamics-loud and soft, rubato- bending the tempo, and emphasis on certain key notes to achieve an emotional result. They all have to work together in synch and make sense to produce the desired effect. With writing, you can achieve emotion with a mix of internal thoughts, outward actions, character arcs and development, and specific associations to produce a desired emotional effect- but it has to work right together- just like music to produce the emotional result.
4.      Music has taught me how to receive criticism in a positive way and how to use it to better myself. Each week at a music lesson, if you have a good teacher, your teacher will give you suggestions on how to improve. If you take those suggestions, over time you start to see how they can make you a better player. Sometimes you don’t want to hear how you don’t sound clear, or you’re playing the wrong rhythm, but you grow to learn that your teacher is there to help make you better. The same goes with your editor. You have to truly listen to what they are saying and then try to implement it in your writing.

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation--favorite character was Data by far--and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "a concert flutist" when she grew up. She majored in flute performance at the University of New Hampshire on a full scholarship, then secured two teaching jobs at a University and a local community music school. While playing in orchestras and teaching, stories popped into her head, and she used them to make the music come alive for her flute students.
