Interview and Giveaway: Hell’s Mercenary by Luke West

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I’m 25 years of age, and was born and currently reside in Queensland, Australia. To be honest I just started writing without being aware of what genre I was heading into. I have always been an avid fan on Fantasy and anything Paranormal; I guess writing in one of these genres was inevitable. I love creating worlds and characters with abilities far outside the norm. It’s hard to do that in any other genre.
What inspired you to write this book?
Before writing this particular book, my hard drive was filled with only half completed novels. This was starting to bug me, and I started doubting my ability to ever finish one. For fun, I started writing the prologue to Hell’s Mercenary and I just couldn’t stop. When I wasn’t typing, I was planning the novel on scrap paper. I loved the characters, the worlds and the situations the both of them were open too.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Hell’s Mercenary is the first of three books from the Intervening World Chronicles. Arliah lives a mundane life in Hell. In order to escape she unwillingly signs a contract with the devil. Before she knows it, she is signing out at Hell’s reception desk, and traveling up the lengthy elevator ride - eventually arriving at Earth. Her mission is to find out the secrets of Heaven, and bring them to Hell. Meanwhile the people on Earth are battling against each other to secure one of the weekly tickets in Heaven.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
A little bit of everything really. Obviously in a fantasy novel having the name Michael isn’t exactly realistic. I use online search engines and name generators mainly. Some authors find this to be the hardest part of writing the novel, matching a name to a character can be daunting.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Yes! In Hell’s Mercenary, a character named Quookum eventually enters the book. She is a little, nosy old lady whose opinion is the only one that matters. I actually watched a lot of old people at shopping centers just to get a feel about the way they act. I ended up writing a complete background story on her for my own sake.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Ida is my favorite. She is a Witch who lives deep within Hell’s forest. She lives alone in a little old cottage and that’s how she likes it. Ida is a kind old lady, but is well aware of the art that is black magic. I have a special bond with her.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I let the character come out to play why I write. I usually have a fare idea of who they are and the purpose they have in the book. No matter how planned I am though, they always seems to have more to their personality then I realize.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
One of my favorite scenes is when the main character Arliah re-enters Hell. This is home to her, but it’s the first time the reader is welcomed down under. Certain elements of Hell are symbolic to what perception is already out there, but I wanted to develop this one step further. Hell has shopping centers, banks, grocery stores and children’s playgrounds. All of which the people can enjoy without a smile.

Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
In the first book of the series, my main focus was to introduce the reader to the different worlds, and explain the difference between them.
Earth – A deserted world: a place of patience, hope and misery. This is the waiting zone for the humans. They must kill each other for the bounties that hover over their heads. The people with the highest bounties win a life-long ticket to Heaven. The people that try and don’t succeed, end up in Hell for 12 months. Once their expiration date approaches, they are sent down the Tunnel of Abyss, which turns them to dust.  The humans who don’t want to participate can stay on Earth, lingering in fear. Arliah must travel through Earth to find the gates of Heaven.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
If the reader was to only read the first novel, they would miss out on the heart of the story, the history of the characters and why the world they live in is so brutal. I believe book two will be the most important.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Unfortunately yes. The longest it has lasted was six months. I rely on close friends and family members to pull me from the rut. When I don’t write, I’m not myself. It usually starts with me writing several pages of “rubbish” only to delete them afterwards. Very frustrating.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
Listen to music that would best describe the scene I’m about to write. It may be Evanescence or a top 40 hit.
Do you write in different genres?
Yes. I typically write Fantasy/Paranormal, but I’m working on a Horror. It’s not your typical “jump out of you seat” horror, but more “obscure.” I have a few general fiction ideas up my sleeve too.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
It is challenging. Pulling the reader in and keeping them interested really depends on how you evolve the story. Keeping them interested with a horror story and keeping them interested in a romance is a completely different thing. This is what I find the most challenging.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
That’s a tricky one. I guess any writer will find this the most difficult transformation. I only published my first peace a month ago, so I guess then. I have been writing since I was 12, but never imagined my work being read by others.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Dr Pepper and Peanut M&M’s. Even though the packet says to share, I don’t personally like the idea :D
What was the last amazing book you read?
I loved The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. One of my favorite books to date!
What can readers expect next from you?
I like to be different. I notice the different things in life, and the different/unique personalities out there. I hope to release a book that you can’t compare to any others, yet can’t remove your eyes from. That’s the goal anyway.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Although the wide-open space that the desert provides gives me a certain realm of safety, it also opens up a new world of danger. This desert doesn't just contain sand; it owns the gates to Hell. The sun exits, allowing the moonbeams to guide my way. The sweat that once consumed my skin has now gone, allowing coldness to enter my body. The night is black, showcasing the thousands of stars that make up tonight's sky.
My legs begin to ache, proving I must be close. As my eyes scan the area, I can't help feel the oppressive silence. No noise from banished souls, no echoes from the outer city, just deathly quiet. Too quiet. I take in the outline of the lift. A small rectangular shape, outlined in silver metal. If I were any taller, I’d have to duck or my head would be covered in bruises. A batch of unsettled butterflies take up residence in my stomach. Something is not right. Standing in front of the rusted lift doors, something is definitely telling me not to push the button alerting the lift to my presence.
Surveying the situation, I become concerned with what little protection this scene provides me. The humans must be laughing at the target I am so readily providing them. To them I am no threat at all, just a young woman with long black hair and skin so white I could pass as a ghost. My bright blue eyes could be my only chance of scaring them off. I realize I'm not a bulky woman with muscles like a professional wrestler. I don't have devil horns sprouting from my forehead. My appearance betrays no mythical power with which to fight them off. I'm just a girl.
I rely on my black leather trench coat, my high leather boots and my visible tattoos to composite the bad ass image I need to survive in this place. I pull my dagger from its hilt, happy that my glove hides the ring. Allowing a smile to form across my face, hoping to display the confidence I only hope I possess. I wait. Seconds turn into minutes. The unsettling feeling staunchly refuses to leave me. With my dagger still at the ready, I slam my left hand against the button on the panel.
I jump when the lift jerks into motion. This is the only sound I have heard in hours. I wait. The eerie creaking of the rusted chains pulling the carriage to the surface echoes loudly through the desert. No hiding my presence now.

Book Description:
If you were faced with the abominable decision to die or kill a loved one to survive, would you be the honorable sacrifice?
Hell’s Mercenary. The Urban Fantasy novel from the Intervening World Chronicles, by up and coming author Luke West.
Tobias is the Devil – the ruler of Hell. For years he has banished the souls of innocent humans only to compliment his ruling status, but slowly things are starting to change.
Fewer souls are struggling down the elevator ride eventuating at Hell’s reception desk, yet heaven is reporting an influx of angel’s climbing the staircase into the clouds.
Tobias begins questioning the rules with his sister and rivalry – Constance – the leader of heaven.
When his inquiries go unanswered, he entrusts his assistant Arliah with a mission she simply cannot refuse, yet reluctantly accepts.
Her uncanny nature and gothic philosophy only cause havoc among Hell’s people, and their eyes slowly open as they begin noticing her continual departures through Hell’s gates and presumably into the beauty of heaven.
What Arliah soon comprehends is that the gates of heaven are located at the other end of Earth.
Earth – A deserted world: a place of patience, hope and misery. The only escape is to win the game; your target – the humans with the leading bounties.
Will her black magic connections lead her to the gates of heaven – a world believed to be the light at the end of the tunnel? Or will her newfound supernatural powers carve the third strike against her signed contract?
Her mission – find heaven, and once she does, bring it to Hell.

Interview with Bev Allen

First, tell me a little about your book and why you wanted to write this particular story….
“Jabin and the Space Pirates” is an action adventure story set on an imagined colony world in a possible future. It is, despite the title, very much aimed at the older YA reader as it tackles some very adult themes.
There are pirates , nasty ones, and assorted villains; there are soldiers and heroes, the odd prince of the blood and a beautiful slave girl, but more than that, it is the story of one teenage boy’s journey from despair to hope.
It’s not a space opera.  One of my reviewers described it as “allegorical fiction” which delighted me, as that was very much what I was aiming at.  So if you like your scific with loads of hardware and all the clever techno stuff,  this isn’t for you. Think of it more as fantasy, but without the swords, sorcery and the really cool clothes
I wanted to write about how a lack of loving care and bullying can destroy a person’s self-worth, undermine them and take away their self-esteem. And I wanted to write about the causes - drugs, abuse, sex trafficking and neglect.  Far too many kids today are dealing with these horrors and not one of them deserves it.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated or did you always just know?
I’ve always known. Even as a very little girl I told stories and as time went on I wrote them down. After a fashion…I’m dyslexic and it wasn’t until I got my hands on a word processor that I was really able to put down on paper the stories in my head.
What inspired you to write your first book and what was it?
I collect boy’s school fiction from about 1900 to 1940 and my first full length book was one of these, but set in the future. It was enormous fun to write and it went down very well with my kids and their friends, but it wasn’t really something for publication. At least not in that form, but I may revisit the whole idea one day.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Some of it is. My own self-worth was badly undermined when I was a small child and a teenager. I understand how easy it is to convince yourself it is all your own fault and to look for reasons why you deserve what you are going through.
How do you chose when/which characters die in your books?
That’s a hard question. I think it depends on the plot. The king is assassinated for plot reasons, soldiers are killed in the fighting, but apart from that, no-one dies in this book. Although, it is implied that the main villain hangs, which I like to think he did.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
My two newest finds are Ben Aaronovitch and Alan Bradley, but they aren’t very new. I am always on the look out for someone new to read who captures my imagination.
Who do you look up to as a writer?
A lot of writers. A list of talent that fills me with awe and would, if I listed them, make you yawn. Let’s say Terry Pratchett, Georgette Heyer and George MacDonald Fraser would be leading the charge.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your book?
Probably the title. The addition of “ and the Space Pirates” gives the impression of a children’s book and it is most definitely not a kids book. No under 14s imo, possibly no under 16s.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I find difficult is scenery. I find painting a word picture of the landscape very hard. Buildings are easier, but the rest takes long hard work and sometimes I have to resort to a sketch pad and map it all out..
What book are you reading now?
I’ve not long finished Ben Aaronovitch’s “Whispers Underground”, the latest in his Rivers of London series. I adore these books, they are so original and so fantastically well written.
Who designed the cover? And do you help with them?
A lovely man called Bradley Wind designed it for me. I gave him some thoughts and he came up with the idea.
Did you learn anything from writing your books and what was it?
That is a really difficult one to answer. I think I have learnt not to be so willing to put myself down. Before, even though a dozen people had told me I could achieve something, it would take only one to sneer and they would be the one I believed. I am more inclined to listen to the others these days…not completely, but I’m prepared to give them a little more credence.
If you could be one of your characters, who would you chose?
I think I would be RSM Jivan Singh.
Are there any books you think some of us should read, just because?
Everyone should read “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Yes. If you are or you become parents, bring your kids up to be the sort of people you want to raise your grandchildren.

Who's Your Favorite Vampire Bad Boy by K.A. Last

Hi Roxanne, and thanks for hosting my Fall For Me tour stop today. I’ve always been one to gravitate towards the bad-boy whether it’s in a book, on the big screen, or in my favourite TV show. There’s something about the fictional bad-boy that gets my heart racing. That’s probably due to a combination of excitement, the fact that they’re usually hot-damn sexy, and wanting something I can’t have. You can’t blame a girl for fantasising, right?
Today I’d like to share with everyone my top five vamp bad-boys that aren’t Edward Cullen. Now, I’m the first to admit that I love Twilight, but I’m also first to admit that I prefer my vamps mean and bad-ass over sparkly. Still, one sparkly vamp made my list, but he’s mean and eats people.
5. Eric NorthmanTrue Blood – Played by Alexander SkarsgårdWhen I first started watching True Blood, I was all for Bill, but as the seasons went along, Eric came into his own for me. Hmmm … muscles and fangs make the perfect combination. Who wouldn’t want a vamp like this chewing on their neck?

4. JerryFright Night – Played by Colin FarrellJust look at him! Enough said.

3. Riley BiersTwilight – Played by Xavier SamuelOk, so he sparkles, but look at that face.

2. Angel/AngelusBuffy The Vampire Slayer – Played by David BoreanazAngel is a tortured soul, but when Angelus arrives on the scene—look out! He comes in at a very close second, but only because this tragic hero—when he has his soul—is a little on the soft side. Like I said, I like them mean. But … that hair! I just want to run my fingers through it.

1. SpikeBuffy The Vampire Slayer – Played by James MarstersSpike is my number one bad boy. He is make-your-skin-go-all-goose-bumpy sexy. Then there’s the wit, the humour, and that look in his eyes. Plus, when he is mean, there’s no half-assed about it. Even when he gets his soul back, he’s still got the swag.
I’d love to know who your number one vamp bad-boy is, and why.~ K

(My fave vamp bad boy in this list is Spike- while the Angel/Buffy love was epic, Spike chose to be a good guy and do good things even without a soul, then he chose to get his soul back- now that's a bad boy with aheart of gold.  Plus thta accent and snarky sense of humor- love it. But my current fave vamp bad boy who didn't make the list- (OMG how could he not make this list) is Damon Salvatore played by Ian Somerhalder. Now that's one gorgeous vampire bad boy *drool*) ~Roxanne

Interview and GIveaway with Skhye Moncrief

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I’m a paranormal and fantasy romance author formally educated in geology and anthropology. This seriously impacts my writing. I LOVE to world build where studying culture ad nauseum leads straight into playing with myth. Well, you can’t create a culture without adding an ideology! So, I always tend to write based on something that’s standard like werewolf mythos but tweak it quite a bit by the end of chapter one. Now, when I read, I tend to read for sexual tension and world building. If there isn’t a romance, I’m usually bored with the story—unless I’m researching something and intrigued by that subject. From that interest, I find I almost always have some sort of sexual tension in each scene of my works.
(sexual tension + intriguing world building = awesome romance) I’ve learned through reviews that my type of world building is very complex. I don’t just have a bottle with a curse on it that the heroine touches to travel through time. I usually play with subject matter that I rarely find in romance—political and ideological conflict. I believe you have to have the right motivations for a historical or you have to create them for futuristic/fantasy romance or your story just feels like it’s missing something. But that’s my preference, reflecting my university interests—the slant of this question’s answer. Whether it’s another planet, another culture, or another time period, I jump into the challenge head first and have loads of fun fleshing out the tale!
What inspired you to write this book?
BIG BAD BEAST is a long novella that follows the novel LOVING LUCIUS. BBB’s heroine Josie first enters the Werescape in LOVING LUCIUS. She’s dealing with serious grief and finally works through the anger phase in BBB by facing the werewolf shifter who she’s always loved but never found a way to connect with…I had to write her story, because it was left hanging in LOVING LUCIUS, for readers who wonder about secondary characters. Initially, I had planned to write some novellas with both of these stories and a third. LOVING LUCIUS grew too long. So, I ended it when Lucius’ romance ended and wrote two werewolf novella romances to carry on with two aspects from Lucius’ novel.
Please tell us about your latest release.
My latest release is BLACKBERRY WINE. It’s a Werescape romance that follows BIG BAD BEAST. The blurb can tell readers plenty…
To drink or not to drink? Either choice just might be the death of Colt because Hell hath no fury like a Raven scorned.
In the blink of an eye, Raven lost it all but regained a future. That's when she was ten. Thirteen years later, she's come full circle. In her breeding prime, attractive, wealthy, and powerful, she's what every Normal and Shifter male dreams of possessing. But she's not about to let a man make decisions for her. She can kick-ass with repairing machinery and running a homestead. Then the world stops when she sees him...
Bound by blood and honor, Shifter Colt can't shake the way his Wolf craves Raven. But he must because his brother found her first. And why does she fall into her little awestruck trances whenever her gaze falls upon Colt? His Wolf demands Colt sink his fangs into the salty flesh of the sexy female who can't function when he's nearby.
And everywhere Raven turns, she faces an even worse chapter in the Werescape's shootout at her supposed-to-be Okay Corral. Well, thank goodness every girl has a few tricks up her sleeve--fast draw, guts, all the muscles of one magnificent guardian Shifter, and a few bottles of her special-recipe brew...Temptation never uncorked a sweeter seduction than 2065's BLACKBERRY WINE.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' namesDo you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I’ve actually done all of these tricks. What I do usually depends on whether the story takes place in a historical setting—then I look up appropriate names. In the WERESCAPE series, my werewolves have two clans in North America. One clan’s offspring are named after the (Roman) Caesars. The other clan’s offspring are named after strong powerful animals. This notes the Shifter’s origin and hints at whether or not a man is as trustworthy as another…
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Jackal from Werescape Book 1 was a challenge to write because I loved the crazy American military dragon hunter in REIGN OF FIRE. *everyone gasps* Why, you ask, do I claim to have watched a movie reviewers said was geared toward teenage males? Well, first it’s apocalyptic! Then it had Gerald Butler…And I love dragons. But, the movie inspired Jackal because I loved the emotion in Matthew McConaughey’s eyes. So, I set out to make a character that expressive. Jackal was born. I still like him best out of the heroes I’ve created.
Do you have a formula for developing characters?
Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write? Oh, never. I would have to waste time and energy writing those things down when I’m too antsy to write the story. And, I’ve learned that characters evolve quickly as a writer creates rules (and rules grown out of rules) in story worlds. So, I find it’s easier to just jump in and write until I realize a character needs something and go back to tweak the character. The tweaks are quite simple once you’re in character…
Do you write in different genres?
Yes. Paranormal. Fantasy. Futuristic. All my books are romance, even the ones labeled erotic by my publisher. Those books have solid romantic growth. I’ve read erotica to understand the market and find true erotica simply lacks soul for me. My characters have soul. So, they need romantic growth. I call my “erotica” romantica. It’s usually erotic because I push a boundary not allowed in traditional romance. I have long explicit sex scenes that often grade across the fringes of acceptable…
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
Not at all. Well, unless I’m trying to write contemporary. I’ve started writing a few contemporaries. Unfortunately by the end of chapter one, something has jolted those stories into the paranormal or fantasy realm! I blame that on my fascination with culture (cultural studies). I just can’t sit and think “no magic” or “no myth”. Now, I was trained to think scientifically about everything. But, writing myth, legend, magic, and about the future is just way too much fun! I find it difficult to write straight genre stories.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Wolf writhed in agony because she was even more beautiful when she hissed words through grated teeth. But I'm unlike the Shifter Tacitus who seeks challenges. No. I prefer my females docile and safe at home. Josie will never be either.
Mine, Wolf growled.
"Gods-damn-it, Hostillian. Don't growl at me. Just let me pass." Her pale blue eyes glinted like they had a Shifter glow of their own.
Play, Wolf hummed.
Sit. Quiet. Let me think.
Her heart thrashed like she faced a grizzly.
And she'd said Augustus had that damned wink when he gave her this assignment. He sent her on purpose. Hell, I can't let her go out with the curfew a few hours away. Not that tight little ass and those pouty lips. What kind of Guardian would I be if anything happened to a female? "There's nowhere you can go this time of day. You have to stay here." Hopefully, I sounded calm. But she has a way of working from every angle to pry my flesh from my bones. A way of forcing every one of my blood cells into my swelling cock.
"You're kidding. Right?" she snarled. "You and me in the same space until morning?"
She's right. But I'd be damned if she got the best of me in any discussion. "If you behave, everything will be fine," I managed calmly.
"Me?" she crowed, pointing at the floorboards with obvious rage reddening her cheeks.
"You're the one who accused me of coming here on purpose. I offered to leave too."
Unfortunately, I couldn't allow her to win. "You will behave. I have seven teens here learning to grow wheat. But they're highly impressionable--"
"How dare you suggest I'd seduce them!" She thrust up a finger and stabbed the pointed tip into my chest. "I don't know when the last time was I even looked at a youth the age of the one that just left. He's scrawny."
The solid fingertip jabbed harder with each of her words.
Not hard enough to soften Wolf's cock. "You're not leaving this cabin until sunrise." I turned my back to her, leaned an elbow against the biting doorframe, and stared at unfolding grassy prairie beyond the gaping gateway.
Movement even farther out noted my loping students in their Wolfskins were returning to prepare for the evening meal. "You'd better find something to do, Josie. The boys are back.
In were-form. And they'll be shifting shortly. If you don't want to mislead them by staring at their nude bodies, you'd better back away from the door and find something to do."

About the Author:
Aside from muscled men in fur, leather, denim, or kilts, I love cultural ecology, cultural evolution, cultural relativism, and natural processes. Big ideas. Simple concepts that manifest in world building to crazy people like me who studied anthropology and geology before turning to writing romantic fiction. My rule of thumb is to love the good, the bad, and the ugly of every culture in my tales so every aspect of my stories resonates as real as possible.

Interview: Ragnar the Murderer by Lily Byrne

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I am a mum, writer and editor living with my family in Southern England. It’s hard to remember what inspired me, I have just always been interested in history, and relationships/ romance, so why not put them together? I wrote a couple of Victorian historical romances but that era is so close to the modern age, I wanted to go right back into the past.

What inspired you to write this book?
I wanted to see how people in different centuries dealt with the universal subjects of love, rejection, parents opposing your love etc. These things have happened since humans first appeared- what was it like in different centuries?
Please tell us about your latest release.
My latest release, ‘Ragnar the Just’, is with the same characters—Ragnar, Aelfwyn, Bjarni, Kjartan, Steinar etc—but this time an M/M romance, set in 10th century Britain where same sex relationships were far more taboo than in the 21st century.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I search for names popular in the time period. I used various Viking and Anglo Saxon lists of names, and I must admit, I got rather carried away with names. Many people have said the names are confusing and unpronounceable, whereas I don’t think so. But its made me think that maybe I should stick to shorter, simpler names in future.

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?I just love writing Kjartan, he’s so naughty! He is the opposite of me, he will try anything, do anything. He does what he wants and other people have to fit in with him. I’ve always been a good little girl, doing the right thing, but he’s my alter ego, the dark side!

Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
I found out really interesting things about Norse culture and 10th century England. There is a site, the Viking Answer Lady, run by Gunnora Hallakarva, which has vast amounts of information on the Norse, and another site, Regia Anglorum, which is a re-enactment society with loads of details about everything the Anglo Saxons did.I could go on for hours talking about my research, I LOVE doing research, but I won’t. I was shocked the other day when I learned some writers don’t like researching!

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
I think they could all be read as standalones actually, as the three books all have explanations of what happened beforehand in the story. The third one is an M/M romance and was kind of meant to be a spin off, but my publisher included it in the series.

Do you write in different genres?
I started off writing contemporary drama about forbidden love, but I find modern life far less interesting than historical periods, so changed over to historical romance/ crime. I might go back to contemporary, but my publisher says my historical books are more interesting.

When did you consider yourself a writer?
Since I can remember. I’ve always written stories, I think my first was about a family saga about children around my age and their hamsters. I can’t imagine not writing, it’s a good escape, its therapeutic and to have my books published is my dream come true.

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I am a passionate fan of motorsport, especially motorbikes. I have been to a few events at Brands Hatch and Thruxton and always watch MotoGP and Formula 1 on TV. I used to watch Superbikes but they aren’t shown on TV anymore… I even had a Rally driving experience for my birthday a few years ago, it was exhilarating. I jumped up and down with excitement on the spot for 10 minutes when I got home, I nearly fell through the floor!I also love films, and watch as many as I can, and get into endless geeky discussions with my fellow fans about who starred in which film, who was Darth Vader’s father and such things.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Well I’m editing a book at the moment for my publisher, Taylor Street Books, but I don’t want to say the title cos it isn’t ready yet. Lets just say it’s a psychological thriller to do with Europe, World War 2 and good versus evil! It is an amazing book by a talented writer, watch this space!

What can readers expect next from you?
I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a fourth Ragnar novel, but I wrote two last year so I’m a bit worn out at the moment, what with the editing and mummy duties. It would be about Ragnar discovering his real father (he’s illegitimate) and secrets to do with his past and ancestry. I may have to kill off a major character in this one as well, they didn’t live long in the 10th century…

A tale of love and treachery.
It is a time of uneasy truce, of two races living side-by-side, inter-marrying even, but forever on the look out  for treachery among their neighbors.
They meet, they bathe together and they consort. Life is short, fun is likely to be brief, and opportunity has to be seized wherever it can be found without unleashing long-held rivalries and carnage.
Then the youthful Dane, Ragnar, falls in love with Aelfwyn the Angle who is already promised by duty to one of her own village.
Ragnar and Aelfwyn's passionate love affair is a secret which will never be hidden for long, but theirs is not the only secret around.
When Ragnar finds himself charged with murder, he and Aelfwyn are forcibly parted. But is Ragnar really a  cold-blooded, cynical killer or is there a more sinister plot being played out?

Lily Byrne
I faffed around at writing for many years until I had my daughter, but becoming a mum seemed to kick start something in me: I realised that I now had a purpose and time was limited, so I must get on with it.
The winter of 2009 was severe and as I and my family live in a small village, we were house bound by unusually deep snow for southern England. So I settled down in my office (i.e. the corner of our bedroom) and began my first book, which was published in 2010.
I haven’t stopped writing since. I go through phases of planning my story, writing furiously, or editing it. It is much easier now my daughter is at school and I get a few hours of work done each day.
My daughter has truly been an inspiration to me: she has had severe health problems in her short life but is always smiling and laughing, planning for the future, full of ideas. Working at home writing and editing has been ideal, I love my life.

The Halo Effect by Pamela Crane

The Halo Effect by Pamela Crane
Excerpt from Chapter 4
Pushing his glasses up his pointed nose, Allen Michaels diverted his stare from the front row beauty and glanced down at a collection of story synopsis ideas as he waited for the last of the students to arrive. His month in Westfield had confirmed it; Westfield provided the perfect setting for his next screenplay, a suspense thriller. He knew from skyrocketing box office sales that audiences loved small-town murder mysteries and he was determined to deliver. A tremble overcame his clamped hands and he hastily wiped moisture from his clammy palms onto his Dockers. Self-consciously straightening his collar, he checked to make sure his attire was in place – an obsessive habit since youth. His nerves were getting the best of him this morning, but that could be a combination of the breakfast sausage he’d eaten and his body’s sluggish adjustment to the climate. But getting acclimated to the northeastern winter wasn’t the only thing on his mind; he had a class to teach. The last of the students drifted in. Allen inhaled and formulated each word in his head before he spoke. He paced across the room, examining the pairs of intense eyes peering up at him. He drew a blank. Stage fright.“Welcome, class.” It took every ounce of strength to push the words past his chapped lips. His world had been turned upside down in the past six months. I shouldn’t have come here. But after all that had happened, he also knew this was the perfect diversion from the paparazzi. He could lay low, get a fresh perspective, and start over. Maybe get a good story out of it as well. He would take it day by day. As his thoughts threatened to smother him, the strain in his shoulders crept up into his skull. Reality was harsh, and the fragile thread that held him together in front of this roomful of strangers weakened. He knew he had to get through these few weeks unscathed. So he shook off the discomfort that swept over him and proceeded with the class. “My name is Allen Michaels.” He looked over his glasses at the group before him. “So you all want to be screenplay writers?” That was easy enough.A pause, then a mumble of affirmations rose around the room. “Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’m a writer, director, producer … and now your teacher. I’m going to help you make your dreams come true. To begin, I want each of you to write out a single word that expresses why you want to be a writer.”He waited for the shuffle of bags and whine of opening zippers to die down, then studied their contemplative faces. So eager. So brimming with enthusiasm. It reminded him of his own beginnings, and how similar circumstances had led him to this very moment. The possibility of a teaching venture first came to him several months back. Needing a break from Los Angeles and the bitter memories associated with the place, he decided to take a brief sabbatical. It was no big deal being uprooted like this; he’d been drifting around for years, moving from one city to the next, shifting from one life into another. However, this time was different. It wasn’t his usual step up to bigger and better; he had grown accustomed to certain luxuries, and under normal circumstances he’d be searching out a location that would accommodate his trendy lifestyle of fancy restaurants and regular pampering. But his latest emergency had afforded him no such time. The weight of Los Angeles and its insatiable press suffocated him, and he knew if he didn’t get out soon, he would choke. All he needed was a few weeks. Just some time to regroup. After considering options for passing the time, he liked the idea of lecturing. He thrived in front of an attentive audience, once he got over the jitters. So the next order of business was where. Far enough away to leave the past behind. Though he rarely frequented the east coast, he warmed up to the thought as things got rocky with his ex-wife. That, along with all the right doors opening, led him to Westfield, New York. His one-room rental from elderly Mrs. Ellsworth was sparsely furnished, and he required nothing more than the basic necessities to avoid cluttering his newly minimalist life. Arriving in New York with little more than a suitcase and carry-on, the man appeared anything but extravagant, with the exception of the brand new Mercedes E-320 that he rented upon stepping onto New York soil. Snowflakes drifted outside his classroom window. The crystallized distraction invited his eyes to scan the parking lot beyond. His shiny black Mercedes with beige leather interior – his only noteworthy symbol of success – was already covered in a dusting of snow and salty residue. He made a mental note to check on snow tires later. A cough from the back row signaled that the students were finished. “So let’s hear some of the responses. Just shout them out,” Allen said with a dramatic flair of his hand. “Money,” a blond girl initiated. Ah, but the love of money is the root of all evil. “Fame,” said another. And fame can turn on you at any moment.“Fun.” Work is always work, my friend. And then the golden ticket answer. It was as if he had heard himself say it, or think it, but it came from the front row corner. “Passion.”“Now that’s an answer, class. Passion. You could do anything for fortune and fame, but writing is about passion. And I’m going to help you cultivate that passion. Since this is a beginners’ course, we’re going to start with the basics. In order to begin, you must know your voice. What makes you tick? What inspires you? What are your darkest secrets?” He paused for a moment, watching the thoughtful expressions on the students’ faces as they leaned in. He proceeded with an air of confidence. “Before we dive into screenplays, I want each of you to listen up. This is not for the weak of heart. If you don’t live and breathe and eat and sleep this, you aren’t going to make it. If you aren’t ready to commit your all, I want you to leave now. Get up and leave.” He pointed to the door. Pairs of curious eyes met others’ around the room. They appeared either scared of the crazy man ordering them to leave or wondering if he was serious, but nobody moved. “Alright, that settles it. We’re all in,” he said with a clap of his hands. “Now, I want to see your heart. Each of you will write a page about yourself. Harness your energy and put in on paper. Get as personal and real as you can.” He felt the momentum. Everything was clicking. “Tell me why you think you have what it takes to make it in this field.” His material flooded him in one memorized tidal wave. It felt good to view the admiring gazes of so many. He congratulated himself on the idea of hosting a writing class. Not only would it put some money in his emptying pockets – a result of a creative drought and lawsuit-happy ex – but the ego boost would be worth it. “Does anyone have any questions so far?” As if on cue, several hands shot up around the room. Allen addressed a scruffy kid in the back row.“Can you tell us about Hollywood? What is the industry like?”Allen’s mind rumbled through a variety of answers. How should he answer? With the truth? That Hollywood had been both his single best friend and his worst enemy? It embodied the injection of his next high, but the subsequent low would hit rock bottom. Hollywood was full of plastic people and fake smiles, but it was home nonetheless. It was where he felt fulfilled. Yet it had rejected him the moment he took one wrong step. His love affair with the entertainment industry fed on having a big name in a small world. Hollywood devoured people then spit them out. And for some strange reason, he gravitated toward it … needed it. He was the Allen Michaels. He was the epitome of success, but had achieved that at a price. For Hollywood was laden with media vultures who knew how to dig up old wounds and tear them open. The glare of their spotlight illuminated any darkness. And now his name, smeared with past sins, was ruined. Lucky for him, pop culture news managed to skirt around the remote town of Westfield. No, he wouldn’t tell them the truth. Instead he would tell them what they wanted to hear. That the fame and fortune was gratifying, but it also required hard work and creativity. That it’s a tough market, but worth the blood, sweat, and tears. And boy were there a lot of tears. Settling on the first words that took form, he answered, “It’s everything everyone wants, but only a few are cut out for it. And much of it is about who you know. I’ve spent the last thirty years perfecting my work, networking, and building a name for myself. So before any of you think you can waltz in and claim your fame, you need to refine your craft. That is what I’m here to do for you. And perhaps one day I’ll be your ticket to success.”Like golden honey dripping from his lips, he knew they’d eat everything he fed them. He gave a satisfied smirk at his own cleverness. “Moving on … I’m passing out your syllabus.” A couple of papers fluttered to the floor as he shuffled them from his desk into his hands. He clumsily bent to pick them up, only to lose several more in the exchange. An overeager student … the woman from the front row… beat him to the loose papers on the floor, and he let her. Watching her tend to his mess, Allen almost caught his breath when she looked up at him from her crouched position. She has the face of an angel. She had captivated him when she first walked in, but up close she was even more beautiful. When she had collected the last of the papers, he leaned in. The fresh scent of her hair lured him closer. His gaze fell upon the attractive curves of her body then upward to the most innocent green eyes he had ever seen. “Why thank you. What’s your name, young lady?” “Haley Montgomery, sir,” she replied with a shy grin. Her voice was sweet and tender. Haley Montgomery … what a beautiful name. “Thank you, Haley. And please call me Allen.” She retrieved the last of the fallen pages and shoveled them into his arms. They momentarily stood eye-to-eye while he absorbed her glowing radiance. Dark hair complemented her emerald eyes. Based on her appearance, she looked to be half his age, but this woman gleamed with childlike playfulness. At the same time something about her expressed deep maturity – the type of maturity that would cause her to appreciate someone with his life experience. Gently brushing past him, she headed back to her seat. When they bumped arms in passing, she flashed him an apologetic smile. A warm sensation spread through his body. A peace seemed to surround her; somehow her presence made him feel secure. He had to admit, her magnetism caught him off-guard. Though he had come to this town defensive and elusive, this woman’s genuine kindness crumbled his wall with one momentary grin. Was there something else behind that smile? It was subtle, yet inviting. His ice blue eyes followed her as she sat down … her body movement was graceful and fluid. Soft curls fell into her face and she pulled the strands away with manicured fingers. How he wished he could be those fingertips caressing that cheek! Shakespearean poetry cascaded through his thoughts. Everything about her intrigued him, but something specifically beckoned him to approach her … something that he couldn’t quite put his finger on. For the next few moments she unknowingly held his intent gaze. He watched her read the syllabus, wondering if her thoughts clung to him as his did to her. Did she imagine tenderly tracing the outline of his face? Or running her fingers through his hair? The thought splashed over him that perhaps she noticed him as more than a teacher. The moment ended all too soon as his internal query was interrupted by a cleared throat from the back row. There was no time for contemplation as several blank expressions waited for further instruction. “Let’s outline the details of the first assignment …” and as he resumed talking, his attention never left the green-eyed beauty in the front row. She was exactly what he had been looking for. And if she didn’t yet know it, she’d know it soon enough.

Interview: The Chosen Series by Christine James

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
~~ Sure, I'm a stay at home mom of two wonderful boys. I don't write for the money but because I love to create interesting characters and places.  I'm not sure what exactly it was that inspired me to write this genre.  I think mostly it was to see if I could do it, and do it well.  It's not my original genre to write in, so I'm still learning it as I go.
What inspired you to write this book?
~~I've always had a fascination with angels.  It was never supposed to be turned into a novel.  It was written out of pure boredom.
Please tell us about your latest release.
~~My latest release is the final tale in The Chosen Series.  It wraps up the emotional journey.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
~~I don't have a particular formula for this.  I try to create names that aren't commonly seen in books.  I try to give them names that fit their personality.  However, more times than not, about half way through the book, I change one or more character names.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
~~ Angie was the most difficult to write because she had so much going on.  It made my head hurt at some points.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
~~I absolutely LOVED creating and giving life to Lucy (who comes along in Final Redemption)
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
~~My two favorite scenes both take place in Final Redemption.  One being a football scene between all the characters.  I love this one because I find it amusing.
My second favorite scene comes at the end of Final Redemption.  It is emotional and in fact, I had to step away from it for a few days because I literally cried when I wrote it.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
~~This has got to be one of the most difficult things I've ever done in my life.  Building a world that exists only in my imagination and putting it to the page is daunting.  There are so many aspects to consider.  Do I want to make it believable or just go all out and make it ridiculous? Honestly, my preference are paranormal books that feel like they could be very real. Sometimes they unavoidably blend together.  I'll see something/someone at the grocery store and think, hmmm that looks like something Lucy would wear.
Putting together a series is even more daunting because the majority of the foundation has to be put together in the first book.  This can get boring to the reader if not done correctly.  As a writer it is extremely frustrating to do sometimes.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of?
~~If the readers jump in with Risen then they should be fine.  There are new characters and I try to quickly cover some of the things from Fallen.
Can these books be read as stand alones?
~~The only book that could possibly stand alone in this series is Fallen, but even that book, in my opinion, feels like there needs to be more.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
~~I believe that an author puts a small piece of his/herself in every character they create.  I am no exception.  Each one of my characters have a bit of my personality in them; calm, angry, irrational, whiny, irritating, blunt, strong with leading skills, stupid, goofy and so many more.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
~~I suffer from writer's block often. When that happens I turn to my best friend and she helps.  We call it 'literary constipation'.
Do you write in different genres?
~~Yes, I do.  I write crime/thrillers and historical romance.  In fact these are my favorite genres to write and what I originally started in.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
~~At times yes, because I have to remind myself that when writing a crime/thriller book they are just humans.  Which sometimes can be scarier than any monster I can ever create.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
~~Though I've been writing for at least 20 years, I didn't consider myself a writer until Fallen was published.  I just considered myself a story teller.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
~~Listening to boy bands from late 90's.  Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, etc
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
~~I design and decorate cakes.  If I'm not writing I have to have an outlet somewhere.  I'm also an avid reader.
What was the last amazing book you read?~~My current obsession is anything by Karina Halle
What can readers expect next from you?
~~I'm curretly working on my next project, UnderCity, and hopefully will be releasing it by the end of March or Mid April.  Then in the summer I will be releasing another crime/thriller.  Swelter

“K, boys, it’s shirts against skins. Lose ‘em,” Lucy said, pointing to the guys and ignoring Thad.
“I beg your pardon?” Thad said, aghast.
“Why do we have to be skins?” Josh complained.
Lucy looked at Erin and they both shrugged and grabbed the hems of their shirts, preparing to haul them over their heads.
“Whoa!” Sable said, covering his eyes immediately.
“Wait,” Josh, Angelo, and Thad said at the same time.
“Hell, yeah,” Blaze chimed in.
The girls stopped right before they fully exposed their chest. “What? You guys act like none of you have ever seen a pair of boobs in a bra before. Josh saw mine a few hours ago and I know, for a fact, that three of you have seen hers outside the bra.” Lucy looked pointedly at Thad, Blaze, and Angelo.
Erin’s head snapped in Josh’s direction. “JOSH!” she screeched, accidentally letting loose a snap of electricity.”
Josh sailed backwards and landed on his backside in a mud puddle.
“Ow! Damn it Erin, that hurt,” he said climbing to his feet and brushing the mud off his shorts.
“Well, my sex life is no one's business but my own” Erin said crossing her arms tightl

 About the Author:
I'm a born and raised small town girl. I love fishing, camping, big and loud trucks, but don't let my boots fool ya, I can slip out of my boots and into a pair of heels in no time flat! I love books and movies and it seems that there is never enough time to read or watch them all. I bake and decorate cakes (in my free time) pffft what's that right?
My husband is my world. He has been my cheerleader as I strive to achieve my writing goals; he's helped pick me up and dust me off when I get rejected; he laughs with me, and more times than not he laughs AT me, and he lends a shoulder for me to cry on. He's my rock but more importantly he is my best friend. We have two beautiful sons, Dillyn (8) and Traben (2). They are my angels and by becoming an author I want to show them that their dreams can come true. I have something that not many people can brag about. I have my parents (both amazing God Fearing people married 31 years) and my AMAZING in-laws (married 44 years) these two couples are part of my inspiration. I am also fortunate to call my three younger brothers my best friends. I have a few close friends that have helped me come so far.
I value my relationships and treat them all like rare gems, because they are all special and unique in their own way. I love making people laugh, no matter what. Life is too short to be so serious all the time.
Writing has always been a dream of mine. It's been a comfort when I'm hurting and an outlet when I'm mad. It is my security blanket.

Hex and the Single Witch is free for your Kindle Feb 13 and 14 at Amazon

Please spread the word so everyone can get their free copy

Hex and the Single Witch Vehicle City Vampires Book OneBy Roxanne Rhoads
Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team (aka the P.I.T. Crew)

It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running the town.

The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women in the city.

Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike Malone.
Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is on the fritz.

Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.

Hex and the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

Interview with Cami Stark

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in
this particular genre?

I love doing anything in the North woods! My family and I have a small
place in northern Wisconsin; where I spend the majority of my free time.
It’s also where I do the majority of my writing. I love getting lost in a great
story, whether it is a book or movie, depends on who is in the room.
I chose erotica for three reasons. First, I love to read that genre. Second, I
choose erotica because of the readers, they are such passionate, loyal
people. Third, I love creating the characters and seeing how much trouble
I can get them into!

What inspired you to write this book?

My daughter inspired me to write. She is a brilliant writer herself and I
want to be a role model for her. I would never want her to waste her own
talent.

Please tell us about your latest release.

“All She Craved” is a six part novella series, “The Agreement” is the second
book in this series and released January 29, 2013. In this episode we see
the main characters, Trisha and Michael, really start to get to know each
other while exploring there sexual relationship. We also take a beautiful
trip to the Hawaiian Islands where Trisha discovers this adventure may
have her in real danger.

Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to
match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do
you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?

The character names in the “All She Craved” series were chosen because I
wanted to convey to my audience that the this is an all American couple
that goes on an adventure together. Also, I spent about ten years in
medical sales before becoming a full-time writer. Trisha and Michael are
both in the medical industry. So, I wrote what I saw.

I use BabyNames.com. The site allows you to search names by time period,
country, meaning...etc. It’s a great site!

Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?

The most challenging character to write would be Michael. I am working
on the third episode now and it’s written in Michael’s voice. This is difficult
for me because I'm not a man but, I know what I like in one!

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?

The character I most enjoyed to write thus far has been Trisha. Trisha has
so much of me in her attitude and personality. I think that if I were ever in
her position I would go for it!

Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a
character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just
let the character develop as you write?

I do have a formula. It is a little silly but, I create a character list. This list
states who the character is related to (unless they are the lead), there
physical attributes (if applicable), and there role in the story. I then use
google image search and find a picture I can envision. It really makes the
characters come to life.

What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it,
without spoilers of course?

Definitely the airplane sex with the Delashe! I also like the softer scene’s
between the couple when they discuss the past. Also, the end is a real cliff
hanger!

What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book
related research purposes?

I would say the most interesting thing I have physically done for book
related research was travel. The “All She Craved” series takes place in the
beautiful Hawaiian Islands. The islands are probably my favorite place in
the world. Everything you read on the pages are places I have been.

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs,
that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be
aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?

The books should be read in order. A reader could read the second without
the first; however, they maybe a little lost at first.

Do you write in different genres?

I do actually. I am currently working on three projects (I always tell my
fans that I have undiagnosed ADD so, I have to do multiple things at once)
one is the next installment of “All She Craved.” Second, is a contemporary
romance novel that doesn’t have a name yet. Third, is a non-fiction novel
about my life.

Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?

It’s challenging and exciting. The hardest part of writing in multiple
genres is promotion. You have to load up on your contacts!

What was the last amazing book you read?

“Naked” by Raine Miller. What a great book!

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special
reading spot?

My favorite place to read is the treadmill! A good read can keep me
moving for some time and I appreciate that.

not everyone appreciated a size 8 frame, but I worked hard to maintain
it.”

Before There Were Angels by Sarah Mathews

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I’ve long had a fascination with ghosts and things that go bump in the night. I suppose I’m also a bit of a ghoul – ghastly murders fascinate me – I feel drawn to places and objects that have horrific histories. I dread to think what this means – but writing about it all is definitely cheaper than visiting a shrink!

What inspired you to write this book?
A story that someone told me – they were dealing with a real life Rafaela – the murderous and psychotic ex-wife in the book. It was truly terrifying and I knew that I wanted to put this crazy woman in a story. She seemed to drip with venom and evil – irristible for a writer!
Also, San Francisco. The city is almost a character in itself – I love this city, I love its history, its atmosphere, its politics and most of all its ghosts. San Francisco is riddled with ghosts.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Before there were Angels deals with a couple under siege by the husband’s unhinged ex-wife. They have moved into a haunted ‘Victorian’ with a terrible past – and yet as events spiral out of control, it begins to appear that ghosts don’t have to be dead.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Actually the names in my books are usually bastardized versions of people that I know. I like to have a little fun with it. Friends often get cameo roles. Enemies have been known to be murdered… horribly.

What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I once broke into a property where somebody rather famous had died. I then got myself locked in and had to spend the night in the bedroom where the body had lain, undiscovered for some days. I tend to do my breaking and entering with an assistant/look out these days.

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
This is the first book. Though I am now working on the sequel and there have been some discussions about a prequel.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
Hah! My protagonist’s wife is very like me. She also is obsessed with morbidity and ghosts. Perhaps I should send her to a therapist in the next book?

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I have deadlines and agents and publishers to keep happy. Sure, there are days when I’m feeling less creative but I just have to write through it. Keep writing – write anything – just get your word count done. Sometimes I have to delete everything I wrote the next day, but the exercise keeps you moving forward, disciplined and often opens up different directions for the book that you hadn’t considered before. What I’m trying to say is the only way out of writer’s block is to write through it. That’s what works for me, anyway.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
The desk that I write on came from a house where the whole family was killed – there’s a blood stain on it. Apart from that, I mainline coffee. I think most writers do.

Do you write in different genres?
I do – under different names.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres? No, not at all – though I do need to finish one project before the next – I need to immerse myself in the atmosphere and if you’re trying to write a cook-book at the same time as a paranormal horror, I find your steak recipes can get a bit bizarre.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
When I was four years old and I wrote and illustrated my auto-biography. I also included my death – which was falling from a hot air balloon at the grand old age of twenty-eight. Pleasingly, unlike some of my characters, I do not appear to have the gift of foresight. (That said, I still haven’t been in a hot-air balloon.)
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I’m like a magpie – I can’t walk past a costume jewellery stand without buying something sparkly. Handbags are another weakness. Red wine in the bath and trashy TV on my laptop. Oh – and visiting haunted houses and hideous death scenes. At least I’m well accessorized when I do visit!
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I’m a simple soul – give me a book and a dog at my feet and a cat on my lap and I’m happy.
What was the last amazing book you read?
The Wedding Gift by Kathleen McKenna. Knocked my socks off – a must for any ghost-story fans.Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?In the bath, in bed, in the car (not while driving!). The only time I don’t have a book in my hands is when I’m writing one. What can readers expect next from you?
The sequel to Before there were Angels.
Where can readers find you on the web?
I’m not very good at publicity, but I’m told by my publishers that there will be a Facebook page shortly – so you’ll be able to reach me there. Please come and join me – I’d be happy to answer any questions anyone has. Also – I love to hear people’s ghost stories!!

Before There Were AngelsSarah Mathews
Taylor Street Books
She was the ex-wife who wouldn't go away
When Luke leaves his wife, Rafaella, divorces her, moves to the US, meets Belle, falls in love with her, and then marries her and her two young sons, they all settle down to live happily ever after.
Until Belle spots an ad for a classic San Franciscan Victorian in which four murders have just taken place. It's ideal: it's a Victorian, it is probably haunted and it is unbelievably cheap to rent.
However, they could probably have done without the terror, torment and tragedy that pursued them in their new house.
Should they have stayed in their cozy mid-city apartment and spared themselves the anguish of what was to come? Possibly, but Rafaella was not the kind of woman who was ever going to leave them alone.

Chapter 1

There was a time when everything was perfect, when there was pure love, and pure hope, and pure dreams – pure ecstasy.

We had it all.

But that was in the time before there were angels. Avenging angels.

And some angels will avenge anything.

When I saw her for the first time, that was it. Pure love even pure thoughts, for a second or two.

She was tall, lithe-limbed, with knowing eyes and Scandinavian white hair that invited me to dive my fingers into it to make her tense and preen.

Yes, those pure thoughts really did only last a few seconds.

Astonishingly, my immediate reaction to her was reciprocated. She wanted to rake her hands through my hair too (dark and tangled) and to run them down me as we kissed, as she told me afterwards many times when we reminisced about that first meeting.

We were a human taste explosion that neither of us had ever experienced with anyone else, and it wasn’t as if either of us was inexperienced.

Nothing had ever happened to us like this and nothing could again, or so we thought.

We were magic together from that first moment of that impossible soul fusion.

And already our best moments were behind us, and not for want of trying.

Before she became an avenging angel.

About the Author- Sarah Mathews

Sarah Mathews lives in San Francisco and has written her first book set in an architectural symbol of the city - a 'Victorian'.
There is the slight  problem that while there are reputedly several ghosts who march around the city, there are very few murders that take place there, however Sarah seems to have corrected that
