Giveaway with Melody Manful

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I’m eighteen, like the color black, because it’s easier to wash J and I have a little brother and sister. On top of being ‘trying’ to be an author, I’m also a songwriter and works for a record label here in Denmark. What inspired me to write Dominion were angel stories my late grandmother told.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
What fascinates me about the paranormal world is the fact that anything can happen in there, you never know when you are going to meet a hot alien, or even Dead himself. When it comes to the vampire world, I’m a sucker for the way each author tries to interpret his or her visions on them.
Please tell us about your latest release.
My latest is also my first, Dominion, which is a story about a seventeen-year-old girl, Abigail, who thought she was on the ride of a lifetime when she find out that guardian angels existence, but her life started trembling down when she find out not all guardian angels were here to guide, and her ride was about to land with an explosion.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
The most challenging character to create was Tristan. I had to make sure he wasn’t too much of the same thing. I had to somehow make him seem human, although Tristan is an angel. In the beginning I set him on a pedestal and it was really hard to bring him down from it whiles the story progressed.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Gideon’s character was fun to write, for those who’d read the book you’d wonder why, even think I’m a little bit crazy, and I wouldn’t blame you if you do. I like writing his character because I had to challenge myself to see just how far I could go trying to create a world for a character as him. I had to start him off as being annoying, and gosh, sometimes the thoughts I myself wrote from his POV annoyed me. I knew he had to sound all conceited, spoiled, and a total brat, but I still couldn’t help rolling my eyes during those scenes. The challenge though was building him from an annoying disliking character to a loving one, well almost, a loving one.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
Dominion feature both our world and a make believe world of the angels. The angels world differ from ours in the sense that the buildings aren’t the same, though morals are, the angels have a different sense of code they have to live by, and their life are somehow all heading in the same directions as guardian angels, although with different ambitions.

Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
All of them have. Somehow I managed to put a little bit of myself in each one without even knowing it. It was only when I was reading the final work that I saw some glances of myself in them.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
A really big spoon, a can of peanut butter, music and a really good book!
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
My passion is working on how I can become a pirate or superman! Childhood passions and dreams… still have them! Haha, okay some of my other passions are learning about the film world, I watch films, behind the scenes and documents about directors, set designers, location scouts and all thing filmmaking. I’d like to work on set of a feature movie in the future, preferable an action movie.
What can readers expect next from you?
The next book from me would be the sequel to Dominion, which I’m working on at the moment. It will take off right after the events that took place in Dominion.
Where can readers find you on the web?

What makes great science fiction? Guest blog with Maria Hammarblad

What makes great science fiction?
In my opinion, there’s one basic premise that must be fulfilled to make an interesting story regardless of genre: it must make readers care what happens. Whether it’s science fiction, fantasy, a thriller, or something happening in a historical setting, the reader needs to be interested in the characters and their fate.
The forest can be immensely dark and scary, the palace vast with marble floors and tremendous chandeliers, or the spaceship engines so clever they could almost work, but if there aren’t any people there, who cares? I might stay up at night to imagine my own interplanetary drive, but I’m not likely to stay up reading about someone else’s. The hero in great peril is a completely different matter. In that situation I have to know if the heroine will arrive in time to save him, and with the character’s life at stake, logic dictating two in the morning is past my bedtime doesn’t stand a chance.
This sounds self-evident, but trust me, as a writer it’s really easy to get caught up in details. Also – in my opinion – this is where many science fiction authors stumble and fall headfirst. Sci-fi writers generally have a burning interest in science, the future, and space. If we didn’t, we’d be writing something else. This interest poses both a trap and an opportunity.
I know exactly what the spaceships in my books look like, I know what the worlds look like, how big a space station is in relation to the hero’s ship, and I have a general idea of how I want the ships and worlds to work. Most of my readers couldn’t care less. They want to know if the heroine will make it back home in spite of being abducted by a crazy murderer.
Here’s the thing though; whatever details about science and worlds make it into the finished story must be plausible. I’m not saying it has to be real or invented yet, but it must be somewhat credible. If nothing in the book sounds like it could be real, no one will believe it, and readers will lose interest without even knowing why they’re bored. If it does seem real, it can be both thought provoking and fascinating.
Remember I said the interest in science/future/space is both a trap and an opportunity? The interest will drive writers to learn more and perform actual research. Incorporating elements of reality will make a better story. On the other hand, it will also tempt writers to put too much theory in there. Everyone’s different, of course, but unless it’s woven into the story, page after page with details about imaginary artificial gravity would bore me to tears.
There’s much more to science fiction, of course. Many books offer provocative ideas, take readers to a dystopian future, show how new technology can impact our lives, or why not speculate in someone travelling back in time, changing history. The same basic ideas apply; whether gruesome or jolly, the story needs to be entertaining, and at least somewhat feasible.

When Alexandra wakes up in an unknown environment, populated by a cat-like woman with a tail and a hologram of a rockstar, she knows she has to be hallucinating. Maybe she hit her head, or finally suffered that nervous breakdown. It doesn't get any better from finding out she died and was taken into the future by the elusive Adam, whom she can't remember, or from people telling her she's on a spaceship.

The last year or so is gone from her memory, and she has no choice but to try to adapt. As days go by, her new environment becomes more and more unnerving. She finds herself helpless, and completely dependent on a man who isn't even human.
"Brand New World" is the first novella in the "Embarkment 2577" series.

Author Bio:
Born in Sweden in the early 1970's, Maria showed a large interest for books at an early age. Even before she was able to read or write, she made her mom staple papers together into booklets she filled with drawings of suns and planets. She proudly declared them, "The Sun Book." They were all about the sun. She also claimed, to her mother's horror, that her being on Earth was a big mistake and that her alien family would come and bring her home at any moment. This never happened, but both the interest in space and the passion for bookmaking stayed with her.
As an adult Maria's creativity got an outlet through playing bass in a number of rock bands, and through writing technical manuals and making web pages for various companies and organizations. She did write drafts for a few novels, but the storytelling muse was mostly satisfied through role playing online on Myspace. It was here, while writing stories together with people from around the globe, she stumbled onto Mike. They started talking out of character, and she moved over to Florida to him late 2008. Today the two are married and live in the Tampa Bay area with three rescue dogs.
Besides writing and playing bass, Maria enjoys driving off-road, archery, and Tameshigiri.

Paranormal or Contemporary. DOES MARITAL STATUS INFLUENCE WHAT WE READ?

Paranormal or Contemporary.DOES MARITAL STATUS INFLUENCE WHAT WE READ?

Good morning and thank you for inviting me to make a stop by your site on the blog tour for FOREVER HERS, book 5 of the FITZGERALD FAMILY series. The other day I was at a friend’s house for a girls’ night out when the subject of what readers prefer to read came up.“Readers are rigid and once they love a certain genre, they’ll stick with it,” one of my friends insisted.“That’s true. I only read paranormal romance,” another one added.“Why?” I asked. “I like to escape from my reality. You know, kids, chores, work, and get lost in someone else’s world. I want to live vicariously through the heroine and imagine myself being courted and loved by a shape shifter or a vampire.”“Oh, I love erotic romance. Nothing keeps my juices flowing like erotic and guess who gains, me and my husband when I put the book down,” the next one added with a giggle.“That’s because you *itches already have a man and once you finish reading your paranormal and erotic books, you can slide in his arms and get your groove on,” the only unmarried friend in the group retorted. “I’m single and searching, so I want to read about a women like me, women who believe in the possibility of meeting Mr. Right every time we leave home for work or head to the club. I want to imagine walking into a coffee shop and bumping into an eligible man, a man who loves the same drink but hates the pastries I can’t live without. He could be a millionaire, a detective, a doctor, an artist with lofty goals, a teacher, or an entrepreneur. I want to drool at the possibility of putting my hands on him, getting carpet burns with him, breaking several laws of nature in the elevator or in my car, fighting with him over mundane things like squeezing toothpaste from the top or bottom, sleeping with socks or not, taking out garbage, licking the cream from the Oreos. I want to pretend I’m the heroine when he takes time from his busy schedule to stop by her place of work to bring her the damned pastries he can’t stand because he loves her.”By the time she finished, we were all laughing hard, but listening to them got me thinking. Does marital status influence what books we read? If you’re a housewife, would you lean towards paranormal romance and erotic out of boredom or to spice your sex life? If you’re single and searching, do you lean toward contemporary? Who gets romantic suspense? Urban fantasy? Women fiction? YA?Personally, I think readers are versatile and will try any genre as long as the story is absorbing, a book is by their favorite author or is recommended by a friend. What do you think?

Drama Queens with Love Scenes by Kevin Klehr

OTHER PEOPLE’S VERSIONSKEVIN KLEHR GUEST BLOG
They say that when we watch a movie version of a novel we’ve read and loved, we’re never truly satisfied with the result. It’s because our own little film version has played out in our head as we read the book. Nothing else seems to compare with our original concepts.
One night, two friends who had read my novel, started debating on the personal attributes of one of my characters. One saw Guy, my angel being, as strong and silent. She believed he was full of wisdom and a great friend to have. My other pal believed Guy was insecure, and needed more help from the people around him, than he could give of himself.
Somewhere in the middle of those two views, sits my version. I use the word ‘insecure’ on the promotional blurb, and have him described by one of my other characters as a bit ‘Gomer Pyle’. So as an exercise, I started asking others what they thought of this character. One reviewer saw him as someone who has always been on the outside, looking in. A slender angel who is a bit sad that he’s never had a true friend. As an author, it’s fascinating to hear these other points of view. In fact, what that reviewer said, I had never really thought about, but agree that that is how he turned out to be. As characters find their own voice within your novel, readers hold a mirror that sheds light not only on that character, but how they view their own world as well.
Getting back to my two friends who analysed my angel, they continued to evaluate the central romance in the book. Again this was based on their own personal experience.
My female buddy saw it as a personal growth story centred on the main character, Allan. She also believed that love interest, Warwick, was self-centred. My male colleague definitely read it as a love story, with many obstacles to cross before Warwick and Allan finally get together. The reviewer I asked saw Warwick as a passionate man, who sees things the way he wants to see them, and not as they are. She also summed up Allan as a dreamer who doesn't have the confidence to go after what he wants, or to express his true feelings.
Again, somewhere in this breakdown sits my version, and as an author this feedback is invaluable. Not only because you realise that what you’ve set out to say is being understood, but also because what you’ve set out to say can be reinterpreted. Come to think of it, that’s how life works. If only our intentions were not up for review, but I digress.
We like to think as artists, we have a fundamental truth to share. We use it as the spine of our story and hope to bring the message home. What we forget is that others may take that message a different way, but like the characters in a novel, how they see another person’s motives depends on their own life experience.

About the Author :
Kevin lives with his long-term partner in their humble apartment (affectionately named Sabrina), in Australia's own 'Emerald City,' Sydney.
He calls himself a bit of a 'media tart,' having worked both professionally and voluntarily in television, radio and online. His longest running passion is a weekly radio program he and his partner, Warren, produce for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander station, Koori Radio. Since 2005 they have been discovering music, both new and old, and interviewing local artists and community leaders. Every Saturday night, the Rhythm Divine is heard across Sydney and via the world wide web.
From an early age Kevin had a passion for writing, jotting down stories and plays until it came time to confront puberty. After dealing with pimple creams and facial hair, Kevin didn't pick up a pen again until he was in his thirties. His handwritten manuscript was being committed to paper when his social circumstances changed, giving him no time to write. Concerned, Warren snuck the notebook out to a friend who in turn came back and demanded Kevin finish his novel. It wasn't long before Kevin's active imagination was let loose again.
Kevin is currently at work on the sequel to Drama Queens with Love Scenes.

VampCon by Armand Inezian: Mama Let Your Children Grow Up to be Monster Slayers

Mama Let Your Children Grow Up to be Monster SlayersOver the years, there has been a lot of discussion in the media about children and their relationship to play-fighting, whether it be watching pro wrestling, violent video games, or toy guns. Let me be upfront and say that I thinks it's important for all of us to engage in this discussion. I'm a dad myself, and I think our children's health is of vital interest to us all. We want to keep our kids safe, and a lot of us are considering how far we want to let fantasy violence go, and what kind of rules to apply. So let me just start by saying that I've killed thousands. Possibly tens of thousands. I've killed robbers, murderers, Nazis, KKK members, Cobra soldiers, Decipticons, terrorists, skeletons, skeleton-kings, goblins, ghosts, dragons, giants and- well- the list goes on and on. It also started in fantasy play when I was six or seven. Gradually I moved from action figures, to board games, to role playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons) and video games. So yes, all my killing was fantasy-killing, but as fantasy killers go, I'm up there. My parents were amazingly tolerant off all the fantasy violence, and as for myself,  I didn't even really think about it. It was just there, like air or water. Just there.I can also tell you this: that I'm an amazingly gentle and easy-going adult. In my entire life (not including karate class) I've been in one angry fistfight and a few lamo shoving matches, and I've never seriously hurt anyone. I don't even like hurting tiny animals. I'm the kind of guy who will pick up a worm instead of stepping on it. (confession: I do kill mosquitos, spiders and centipedes in my house)Anyway, I really didn't think much of any of this until I stumbled onto an interesting book called "Killing Monsters" by Gerald Jones.  The book took the conventional wisdom of banning toy guns and turned it on its head. Gerald Jones suggested that fantasy violence, the killing of monsters, is a coping mechanism for a cruel and difficult world. We all know the real world can be a monster. Every day people die under terrible circumstances. Corrupt governments and terrorist groups murder helpless men, women, and children with near-impunity. Gang violence harms (and kills) innocent bystanders. Wars, food shortages, and corrupt regimes take far too many lives. The world is painfully unfair, and most children become aware of this at an early age.One way that children can process this is through fantasy. In books and movies, heroes are permitted to exist, and the complex evils of the real world are simplified into monsters. In fantasy play and fantasy novels, good and evil are boiled down to their purest essence. When many children use toys guns/ swords/ wands to kill monsters or aliens or even human villains, they are expressing a form a release, a  subconscious, mini-protest against the cruelty that exists in far too many corners of our world. When it comes to our own kids, my wife and I have engaged in some deep discussions about fantasy violence. Generally we have arrived at the following conclusions: 1. We do not allow any realistic toy guns. 2. Fantasy guns (like orange "laser" guns) are okay. 3. It's generally okay to kill robots. 4. It is not okay to pretend to kill people that we know! 5. No fantasy killing in the kitchen! It seems to be working for now.So moms and dads out there across the land, please do think about your children and fantasy violence. Please talk about it, and read about it, and debate it, but at the end of the day, remember that there are two sides to this issue, and that slaying monsters can sometimes be a cathartic activity.~Armand Inezian is the author of VampCon, a dark fantasy thriller containing thousands of bullets, hundreds of vampires, two portals to damnation, and one bloody chance at redemption. Guest Blog with Marianne Morea Author of the Cursed by Blood Saga

One question you wish an interviewer would ask.
This week an interviewer asked a very interesting question. She asked, “What is one question that you wish an interviewer would ask, but hasn’t?”I thought about it, and the question that came to mind was: “Has anyone ever tried to make you feel embarrassed or self-conscious about the genre you choose to write?”My answer to that is, “Yes. Quite often, in fact.”When people find out I’m a writer, the next question usually begs, “Oh…what do you write?” It’s at that point I pause, bracing myself for their reaction. Now, I should preface that I live in New York…the self-proclaimed publishing capital of the world…so it goes without say that there are more than just a few literary snobs trolling the cracked sidewalks of the city that never sleeps, and they have no problem letting my words, “I write paranormal romance/urban fantasy–vampires and werewolves, etc.” hang in the air between us like fumes from toxic waste.Noses wrinkled and a ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’ look usually accompanies the standard, “Oh,” response, immediately followed by, “I guess some people like ‘white noise’ after a busy day.”At this point I smile politely and reply, “Yes, romance and fantasy are fun to read, and that’s why it’s a billion dollar a year industry.” …and then, I walk away leaving them speechless.I used to commute into Manhattan everyday for work, and before the age of ebooks, I would read my romances on the train ride into Grand Central Station. I can’t tell you how many times I’d catch people stealthily craning their necks to read over my shoulder…many times the same snotty women that looked down at my choice of book while in earshot of their gaggle of friends.CJ Ellisson, a friend and fellow author says she just cuts people off at the pass, using humor to offset the reaction. She just answers the loaded question with the words, “Vampires and Sex.” According to her, that either shuts people up or makes them laugh. Good either way.I recently tried CJ’s approach at the post office. The gal working the counter sees me weekly, mailing out book giveaways and swag to contest winners and such. When she asked what it was I kept mailing out, I responded, “My books.” Of course, she asked what kind of books, so I replied, “paranormal smut.” The gal laughed so hard, she actually snorted! So, there you have it! Now, every time she sees me walk into the post office, she smiles! Maybe I’ll surprise her and give her a copy of Twice Cursed. Her smile may be accompanied by a blush the next time I see her, though! LOL!I LOVE what I write. I’ve always loved the dreamy fantasies that follow a well written romance or urban fantasy, regardless if it’s paranormal, contemporary or historical. It’s escapist, and brings an element of ‘what if’ to the mundane of everyday life. Reading the genre, as well as writing it, brings a smile to my face, and keeps me coming back for more everyday. I’m sure you feel the same way, or you wouldn’t be reading this blog…So the next time you’re at the beach, or sitting on a bench at the park, or on a train, plane or bus, and someone says, “What are you reading?” Answer with pride and remember my words.“Because it’s fun!”

About the Author:
Marianne Morea is a New Yorker, born and bred, and for the most part her stories and characters embody the grit and complexity of the city. An avid traveler, she uses her experiences from around the world in all her books. There isn’t a place her characters live or travel that she haven’t been herself, and through her words, tries to transport my readers. Like most authors, her love affair with the written word started as a child with the books she read. Even today, she loves to read almost as much as she loves to write. Marianne’s favorite stories are the ones that transport her, that bring her to places and introduces her to characters that leave readers breathless…the ones that spark the fire of her imagination, allowing her to dream in the world of ‘what if?’ She’s always been a scribbler, and from the time she could write her name, Marianne has been making up stories. So it was no surprise to family and friends when she earned degrees in both Journalism and Fine Art, but after working in the trenches of Madison Avenue as a Graphic Artist, she decided to do what she loves most fulltime. Write.
Her dark paranormal romance, Blood Legacy, is the first book in her Legacy Series, and takes you from New York City to the Costa del la Luz in Spain, to foggy London and the romance of Rome. The story also takes you back in time 300 years to a place rife with conflict and brutality, bringing an historical edge to my vampires, their lives, a love that spanned the centuries and the search for absolution and redemption that carries death in its wake. Hunter’s Blood and Twice Cursed are books one and two in Marianne Morea’s contemporary shifter series, Cursed by Blood. The story is set on the east coast of the U.S., taking you from the rocky coast of Maine to the heart of New York City, the NYPD and the vampire underground. Revenge and the struggle for power all play a part in this urban fantasy suspense, where Weres and Vampires are forced to work together to solve the mystery of what’s tearing their veiled world apart from the inside out.
In the meantime Marianne is also a founding member as well as a former President of The Paranormal Romance Guild, a not-for-profit organization for readers and authors of the genre. She’s now a PRG Board Member and Co-Chair of the PRG Event/Marketing Team. She is still writing, and when not sitting ‘bichok’ (but in a chair hands on keyboard), she’s spending time with her husband and three kids, traveling to exciting, romantic places …for inspiration, of course! Who says dreams can’t come true?

Interview with Emily Kimelman

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
While my books are numbered in chronological order I don’t think they have to be read that way. It’s something I worked on really hard actually. I feel it’s important for readers to pick up any book and be sucked into Sydney’s world without wondering what the f happened in the last one.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
I considered myself a writer once I sat down and wrote every day. I felt that to finish my first book, to be ballsey enough to write fiction for a “living”, I needed to take it seriously from the start. I figured a writer is one who writes so if I wrote a set number of words each day then, dosh garnet, I was a writer.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
drugs, drink, and food.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
My husband and I are big travelers. He proposed to me in JFK long term parking (get it?). We promised each other that the trip we were about to embark on was just the beginning of many adventures. Right now we are in India for two months, when we return to the States we’ll be driving cross country with a friend who is moving to San Fransico, then we’ll put our boat back in the water and roam the Hudson River for a couple of months. I also love to cook. Especially pasta, bolognese is my specialty. I’m not great with complicated recipes but if it calls for standing over a big pot and stirring then I’m your woman.

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I love reading on the foredeck of my trawler, OUR WAY, where Sean and I live in the summers. I can lean against the front windows, stretching my legs out straight. Kinsey, my dog, usually comes and cuddles up. There is almost always a breeze and I have a big hat to block the sun from my face. Whenever a boat pulls into the marina I look up and wave then dive back into the world of make believe.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
Yes! Check out this video about Baboons kidnapping feral puppies and raising them as pets. Amazing!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2lSZPTa3ho
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m working on another Sydney Rye mystery right now. Parts of it take place in India (where I’m living for the next two months while I write the first draft) and Dan is one of the starring characters. Sydney is going to have to face not only corruption and injustice but also her own intimacy issues thanks to Dan’s persistent hotness.
Where can readers find you on the web?
I’m on Twitter (@ejkimelman), Facebook, Instagram, and my website where I blog about my travels and the Sydney Rye series.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I will often interview my characters in free write form. The scene in DEATH AND THE DARK where Sydney’s trainer, Merl, explains how he ended up as a dog expert came from one of those free writes. It was about a thousand times longer and less coherent but Merl’s story grew from me setting a timer and refusing to remove my fingers from the keyboard until it rang.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
One of the things I strive for is to be able to work anywhere. I’ve been whittling down on my “must haves.” Basically, all I need now is either a computer or paper and pen/pencil. In a pinch I can even use my phone. Because I’m always on the move I can’t be too picky about my environment for writing. Often, I luck out like now when I’m sitting on a friend’s Veranda in Goa, India with my feet in the sun. But I’ve also been squished between giants in economy class and managed to pen a couple thousand words.
