Before There Were Angels by Sarah Mathews

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I’ve long had a fascination with ghosts and things that go bump in the night. I suppose I’m also a bit of a ghoul – ghastly murders fascinate me – I feel drawn to places and objects that have horrific histories. I dread to think what this means – but writing about it all is definitely cheaper than visiting a shrink!

What inspired you to write this book?
A story that someone told me – they were dealing with a real life Rafaela – the murderous and psychotic ex-wife in the book. It was truly terrifying and I knew that I wanted to put this crazy woman in a story. She seemed to drip with venom and evil – irristible for a writer!
Also, San Francisco. The city is almost a character in itself – I love this city, I love its history, its atmosphere, its politics and most of all its ghosts. San Francisco is riddled with ghosts.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Before there were Angels deals with a couple under siege by the husband’s unhinged ex-wife. They have moved into a haunted ‘Victorian’ with a terrible past – and yet as events spiral out of control, it begins to appear that ghosts don’t have to be dead.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Actually the names in my books are usually bastardized versions of people that I know. I like to have a little fun with it. Friends often get cameo roles. Enemies have been known to be murdered… horribly.

What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
I once broke into a property where somebody rather famous had died. I then got myself locked in and had to spend the night in the bedroom where the body had lain, undiscovered for some days. I tend to do my breaking and entering with an assistant/look out these days.

With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
This is the first book. Though I am now working on the sequel and there have been some discussions about a prequel.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
Hah! My protagonist’s wife is very like me. She also is obsessed with morbidity and ghosts. Perhaps I should send her to a therapist in the next book?

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I have deadlines and agents and publishers to keep happy. Sure, there are days when I’m feeling less creative but I just have to write through it. Keep writing – write anything – just get your word count done. Sometimes I have to delete everything I wrote the next day, but the exercise keeps you moving forward, disciplined and often opens up different directions for the book that you hadn’t considered before. What I’m trying to say is the only way out of writer’s block is to write through it. That’s what works for me, anyway.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
The desk that I write on came from a house where the whole family was killed – there’s a blood stain on it. Apart from that, I mainline coffee. I think most writers do.

Do you write in different genres?
I do – under different names.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres? No, not at all – though I do need to finish one project before the next – I need to immerse myself in the atmosphere and if you’re trying to write a cook-book at the same time as a paranormal horror, I find your steak recipes can get a bit bizarre.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
When I was four years old and I wrote and illustrated my auto-biography. I also included my death – which was falling from a hot air balloon at the grand old age of twenty-eight. Pleasingly, unlike some of my characters, I do not appear to have the gift of foresight. (That said, I still haven’t been in a hot-air balloon.)
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I’m like a magpie – I can’t walk past a costume jewellery stand without buying something sparkly. Handbags are another weakness. Red wine in the bath and trashy TV on my laptop. Oh – and visiting haunted houses and hideous death scenes. At least I’m well accessorized when I do visit!
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I’m a simple soul – give me a book and a dog at my feet and a cat on my lap and I’m happy.
What was the last amazing book you read?
The Wedding Gift by Kathleen McKenna. Knocked my socks off – a must for any ghost-story fans.Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?In the bath, in bed, in the car (not while driving!). The only time I don’t have a book in my hands is when I’m writing one. What can readers expect next from you?
The sequel to Before there were Angels.
Where can readers find you on the web?
I’m not very good at publicity, but I’m told by my publishers that there will be a Facebook page shortly – so you’ll be able to reach me there. Please come and join me – I’d be happy to answer any questions anyone has. Also – I love to hear people’s ghost stories!!

Before There Were AngelsSarah Mathews
Taylor Street Books
She was the ex-wife who wouldn't go away
When Luke leaves his wife, Rafaella, divorces her, moves to the US, meets Belle, falls in love with her, and then marries her and her two young sons, they all settle down to live happily ever after.
Until Belle spots an ad for a classic San Franciscan Victorian in which four murders have just taken place. It's ideal: it's a Victorian, it is probably haunted and it is unbelievably cheap to rent.
However, they could probably have done without the terror, torment and tragedy that pursued them in their new house.
Should they have stayed in their cozy mid-city apartment and spared themselves the anguish of what was to come? Possibly, but Rafaella was not the kind of woman who was ever going to leave them alone.

Chapter 1

There was a time when everything was perfect, when there was pure love, and pure hope, and pure dreams – pure ecstasy.

We had it all.

But that was in the time before there were angels. Avenging angels.

And some angels will avenge anything.

When I saw her for the first time, that was it. Pure love even pure thoughts, for a second or two.

She was tall, lithe-limbed, with knowing eyes and Scandinavian white hair that invited me to dive my fingers into it to make her tense and preen.

Yes, those pure thoughts really did only last a few seconds.

Astonishingly, my immediate reaction to her was reciprocated. She wanted to rake her hands through my hair too (dark and tangled) and to run them down me as we kissed, as she told me afterwards many times when we reminisced about that first meeting.

We were a human taste explosion that neither of us had ever experienced with anyone else, and it wasn’t as if either of us was inexperienced.

Nothing had ever happened to us like this and nothing could again, or so we thought.

We were magic together from that first moment of that impossible soul fusion.

And already our best moments were behind us, and not for want of trying.

Before she became an avenging angel.

About the Author- Sarah Mathews

Sarah Mathews lives in San Francisco and has written her first book set in an architectural symbol of the city - a 'Victorian'.
There is the slight  problem that while there are reputedly several ghosts who march around the city, there are very few murders that take place there, however Sarah seems to have corrected that

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?

I've always been into fantasy, at a very young age one of the first books I ever read was the hobbit and I was always dreaming away and making up stories and I think as I grew up that never seemed to leave me. I prefer my dream world to reality. Reality is a lot harsher and unfair at the best of the times, but in your own day dreams the world becomes what you want from it.

What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?

I think ever since Buffy and Angel I’ve been obsessed with vampire. I think it’s the dynamic of their relationship that appealed to me and of course he is extremely sexy.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was just browsing through the internet and I came upon a site about grigoris, how they were forbidden to fall in love with humans made me curious to find out more about them,  then once I researched it a little more I realised it would make a good book. Please tell us about your latest release.

Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?

Because most of the characters in my book our angels, I wanted to pick names that were associated with fallen angels, so I found a great website telling you all the fallen angels names and what they meant.

Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?

Amy was hard to write for, especially in the attack scene. I had to try and imagine what I would feel like and how I would react if that had happened to me.

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?

I love writing about Michael and his relationship with Amy. The more I write about Michael the more I seemed to fall in love with him myself.

Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?

No formula at all. I just try to let their characters build up through the story.

What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?

I didn’t realise how hard it would be to answer this question. Probably, my favorite scene for me would be when she realizes she in love with Michael, can’t say any more without giving anything away.

Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book

After I finished writing the first one and started to write the second installment, I came across a website with more fallen angels names on it, and one of the fallen angels was called Amy, president of hell, but that’s for the sequel.

Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?

I think there's a part of me in Amy; I think her strength comes from me the way she mangers to deal with every obstacle that’s thrown at her. I like to think I have a similar trait. I'm also in love with my joggers and trainers like she is.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?

Yes a lot. I go off and play the xbox or read a book. I recently read the others, but it disturbed me so much that I’m put off reading anything for the moment.

Do you write in different genres?

Not at the moment, I’m not sure if I could write anything else.

When did you consider yourself a writer?

The day m own book was delivered to me. That’s when I realized I was a writer. I was so proud of myself that I had managed to achieve it and stick with it, because there was so many times, I wanted to just dump the book in the recycle bin.

What are your guilty pleasures in life?

Lots of things. Celebrity big brother at the moment and mcdonalds and the big bang theory because everyone makes me feel guilt when I sneak off for the hour to watch it in bed.

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?

I love telly, vampire diaries, arrow eastenders. I’m a proper telly addict.

What was the last amazing book you read?

The others, by James Herbert. It was disturbing and then to find out at the end its based on a true story, its put me off reading anything. But before that I read all three hunger games book in two days, loved them fantastic books.

Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?

In my bed with a box of chocolates, and a cup of tea.

What can readers expect next from you?

Book two of the series is already out, so I’m hoping to start book three of the series very soon.

Where can readers find you on the web?

Face book, is the best bet. I’m still very unsure how twitter works but im always on face book ready to chat or to answer questions.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?

I looked up towards the shadows that had formed a ring around me, dancing delicately over my body and in the center was darkness, a shadow that had crept out from the night walls and was now lingering over me. A dark energy had my wrists pinned to the ground leaving me paralyzed. I stared up at the silhouette of darkness and I watched with terror as the monster shifted, showing a glimpse of a human face trying to escape through the dark. His head was shaking erratically left to right, revealing his features. Within a split second, a shadow of a man was sat on top of me with deep penetrating eyes, which seemed almost hypnotic but were also filled with sin. They were soulless, without a touch of humanity. He was the devil, the devil on his darkest day.

The Night My Husband Killed Me by Kathleen Hewtson

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
There’s not much to say about me beyond the obvious facts of my unusual beauty and intellect and that I once thought I was a Silver Backed Gorilla for six years. As to why I picked this genre, heck I like rich people who go off the rails I mean I don’t like them but I like writing about them.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
Because I’ve never once met anyone myself included who doesn’t have a ghost story, everyone does, and I think we all want to know what happens, why are they around, will it happen to us, does being a ghost mean you’re in hell or is that just the way it rolls out for some people? If so why?
What inspired you to write this book?
I knew the whole Natalie Wood story stunk, no way did a girl terrified of dark water who couldn’t swim get into a little dinghy, and who beat her up first? From there I had to go onward and the other three ladies were always on my radar so it became a book.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Well this one is about Natalie Wood, Nicole Simpson, Sunny Von Bulow and Colette Macdonald four beautiful innocent victims the next one is about Casey Anthony and she is neither beautiful nor innocent to my mind at least and it will be called The Night My Mother Killed Me
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Names are rough, I like to stick close enough to the real names for them to feel familiar to me but maybe not close enough to get sued  When that doesn’t work out I just use a friend or relatives name.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Yes, writing about the murder of children is excruciating that last scene took me three weeks to complete and it was only five pages long, in the upcoming book the opening which tells how the little girl was killed took me two months, for seven pages.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Yes my one totally fictional book I loved both Leeann and Jessie with a passion they became family members.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
99 percent of what I write is based on actual events but as I learn their lives backwards I come to know them or think I do and then when they are alive again to me I let them tell their own stories, I’m often very surprised by what they have to say.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Well favorite may not be the right phrase but I spent six miserable hours floating in dark water in the Pacific in a nightgown and a down coat to capture Natalies death and I totally wanted to write it out!
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
Everything about this was interesting but it left me with the same unanswered question I had at the beginning. How do you do this, how do you kill someone? Particularly someone who loves and trusts you, what turns a human into a monster or were they monsters to begin with and how can any of us ever tell?
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
It’s a tie, floating in the ocean all night, blowing up my jeep by accident and breaking into a dead heiresses house and getting stuck there, strange genre, strange research.

How does this world differ from our normal world?
The people I write about are either very rich or very famous or very beautiful or all of the above, that’s not the normal human experience they have everything they lose it and it’s a reverse fairy tale that’s not normal its Disney if Disney were filmed in hell.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Each of these books is a stand alone story, I hope the reader finds it that way.
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
No not at all, I’m about the most ordinary person alive and these women were never that.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
It took me twelve years to write one paragraph once, I handle it by reading other people and over eating
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
Yes I am (obviously) a little over the top in my research lol and then my writing is just boring and regimented Monday thru Friday 8am till 5pm or 8am till 2am if I don’t get my daily five pages laid down.
Do you write in different genres?
Kind of, I write in faction, true crime that is fictionalized and then straight up horror.
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
No because my two genres are pretty close.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
Its funny I still don’t, I’m just someone who writes not a real writer at least that’s how I feel, I never even tell people I write unless I’ve known them for a while it feels funny saying it.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Chocolate, and really bad horror films
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
My husband, great books, family and friends, San Francisco
What was the last amazing book you read?
Until The Twelfth of Never
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
I have a small couch in the corner of my kitchen that overlooks the bay, that and bed and bath too!
What can readers expect next from you?
The Night My Mother Killed Me, a not so loosely based novel about the Casey Anthony Case
Where can readers find you on the web?
Kathleen Hewtson Facebook or Taylor Street books
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book? Okay
I’m a ghost by choice, I don’t know if that happens in every case. Seconds after he broke most of my bones and carried me back to our bedroom to finish bleeding, I saw the light that people talk about. I even saw my oldest little one standing inside it…smiling…waiting, not broken anymore. If I could have left I would have. I didn’t want to stay in this terrible little apartment── a place where even before he killed us we had never been happy.

There is the beautiful, life-loving Nicole, who might just have gone back to the stunning athlete she loved, if only he hadn’t killed her first. Then there is Sunny, heiress to one of America's greatest fortunes, sent into an irreversible coma for paying too much for all the wrong things. And finally, there is Colette, the high school sweetheart who married the golden boy and endured a marriage of increasing lies and disappointment, culminating in her death and that of her little girls shortly after Valentine’s Day.

Interview with MM Shelley

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I grew up in a household full of boys, with four brothers in the house I was often out voted on what we would watch on TV. We grew up in La Puente, CA a Latino community. My writing, I believe, has been greatly influenced by the Latin heritage in which I was fortunate to grow up in. I enjoy reading YA and this seemed like a natural fit for me.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
With the paranormal there are so many possibilities and I enjoy discovering the unexpected.
What inspired you to write this book?
There is one scene in Murder on Mars where my central character, Ava arrives at the New Orleans airport and finds a band playing near the taxi and shuttle area. This actually happened to us, it was amazing and such a welcome. To hear music played with such soul I had to incorporate this experience into the story. It was the little things such as this that provided me with the inspiration for this story.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Murder on Mars is a mystery suspense, it begins with sixteen year old Ava Lopez arriving in New Orleans after learning that a good friend of hers has disappeared. She begins to track him down by piecing together what he had been doing the last few days before he disappeared; she discovers a hidden world within the city.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I do like to use names that are from the area that I’m writing. For my Hawaiian series I matched the characters to names that had special meaning for each character and for Murder on Mars I didn’t want to use popular names from Louisiana, I wanted them to have a more authentic feel without being cliché.  Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I do create have a spread sheet for each character and I list everything about them and will often come back to it while I’m working on the story and add to it. I find that the more time I spend with them the more I learn about them and will have to go back to certain aspects of the story to blend that in.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
I discovered many interesting folklores while researching this book, one that will be the central mystery in the next book.
Do you write in different genres?
I would like to, but for now I’m going to stick with Paranormal.
Where can readers find you on the web?

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
New OrleansThey told her to never venture down alleyways on dark nights—not when the moon was hiding, too afraid to show itself. She was also told to never let her cell phone run low on its battery, so low in fact that a call could not be made on it. Her cell phone powered down on its own moments ago and was useless to her now. A howl reverberated down the alleyway, at first it sounded far away, but it seemed to travel down the alley until the howl become deafening. Rosemary had to cover her ears as she quickly looked about for signs of the beast that made the noise. Chiding herself for being fearful she urged herself down the alley, drawing her arms close around her almost as if she meant to ward off evil spirits to keep her soul safe. She had made her decision very late into the night; her mind had raced from one scenario to another. Seeking peace Rosemary grabbed her coat, still dressed in her nightgown she walked to Henry Davis’ home. He kept a residence in the Garden District, a residence he had assured her his own wife didn’t even know about. A dark shadow blocked the light from a street light at the end of the alley.  Rosemary halted her steps, straining her eyes she tried to make out the form within the shadow. Squinting, her eyes unable to see, she took one step closer then gasped in fear. It was the last sound she made as an unseen blunt force struck her from behind dropping her to the ground. Rosemary’s breathing came to a stop and her eyes went missing from their sockets with the greatest of ease.“No witness,” a raspy voice stated. “No witness,” it repeated once more. A shadow dropped down beside Rosemary as it searched through her pockets, they did not come away empty handed. Clutched within the shadowy grasp was a diary containing loose pictures, within seconds the shadow was gone leaving behind the remains of a fallen Rosemary.

Guest blog with Karin Shah Female vampires? Yes or No?

Female vampires? Yes or No?
I enjoy hanging around the discussions on my Goodreads groups. In my Gotta Have Paranormal Romance with Kick group, a thread was started that really got me thinking. A reader confessed that she hates when the heroine in a PNR is a vampire, and this sparked quite a string of agreement from the group. Others came out in defense of this lady vamp or that lady vamp. Half-vampires were championed, as well.
What was going on? I wondered. Then, I noticed that usually the female vampires that were liked had a hero who was also a vampire/shifter/berserker/insert your creature of the night here -- and it came to me. The readers didn't like it because vampires are insanely strong and if the hero is human, that makes the heroine physically stronger than the hero.
We want to imagine ourselves as the heroine, but no matter how strong we want her to be, the hero has to be stronger. If he's human, can he still be alpha?
But there's more than one kind of strength. Is it enough if the hero is more resilient? If the emotionally damaged female vampire can lean on the human hero's rock solid -- uh hem -- support? Does the human hero work if he offers her something no one else can?
What do you think? Female vamp (or whatever) and human hero? Do you like it? Can it work?  I'd love to get your opinion and hear about books where you feel it doesn't work  or it does. Or if I'm way off base, and the negative reader reaction comes from something else? Aggression or blood taking or whatever? I'd love to know!

Interview with Folami and Abeni Morris

What inspired you to write this book?
Folami: Ever since I got the idea for this story, I couldn’t get rid of it. I would envision the characters, hear them, I even dreamt about Hyalee once. One day I just had to write it all down.
Abeni: My sister asked me to write the story with her. I don’t know what could be more inspiring than that.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Folami: Our book, The Exemeus, is really about the length people will go for love and for freedom. The character Dephon is being hunted by the Treptonian government, because he inspires hope. To stay alive he needs the help of the world’s greatest warrior, unfortunately she’s dead.
Hyalee, our other main character, has to discover what she’ll sacrifice for love and for duty. Her world is being taken over by a holocaust like dictator, but to save the planet she might have to give up more than she could ever imagine.
Abeni: To me, this book is about two characters on the road to self-discovery. They both have to discover who they are as people in order to survive.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Folami: It really depends. Sometimes we take a word and play with it until it’s a name. Hyalee’s name we saw on a waitresses tag at Chili’s. When we looked it up it meant beautiful meadow in Cherokee.  We thought it was fitting. For other characters, we look up names from different cultures and find out what they mean.  We do a little bit of everything to find the perfect name.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Folami: I loved to write about Virginia. I am always thinking up snide things to say, but I hold my tongue, because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. I love the fact that with her I can be totally uncensored. I look forward to writing from her perspective more than anyone else.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Abeni: I have a lot of favorite scenes. I love the introduction of the character Bristol and how you can tell that something is going on, but only Hyalee seems to notice.  And when Mrs. Johnson comes in and is surprised to see him, I love her reaction. I love how there is so much going on in that scene, but it all has to hum under the surface. It was the hardest scene to write, but to me it is the best to read. It makes you want to go on this adventure with Hyalee even more.
Folami: My favorite scene would be the first kiss. I don’t want to give away any more than that, but the scene shows the importance of perseverance.
What is the most interesting thing you have physically done for book related research purposes?
Abeni: On Father’s Day, my sister and I drove to 53 Clarendon Heights in San Francisco- the setting for the Johnson house. At the time the house was for sale and it was having an open house, so we left the kids with our parents (we’re horrible children) and visited this 3.5 million dollar mansion in San Francisco.  It was a nice break from reality and it got us on the same page about what the house looked like.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Abeni: Eating foods I know my body doesn’t need.
Folami: Unfortunately, mine is Coca Cola. Caffeine practically runs through my blood.

What was the last amazing book you read?
Abeni: Twilight
Folami: Demons at Deadnight, it was literally my favorite read of the past year.  That and Angel Fall. I’m actually going to cheat and list them both as the most amazing reads.
What can readers expect next from you?
Abeni: They can definitely expect the sequel. Our main focus now is making sure the next book is even better than the last.
Where can readers find you on the web?
Abeni: We are on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheExemeus
Our website is www.folamiandabenimorrisbooks.com
Folami: Our blog is www.theexemeus.blogspot.com

When hundreds of assassins are dispatched to neutralize him, Dephon is forced to fight back. His only chance of survival is to enlist the aid of the greatest warrior the world has ever known. The only problem is, she's been dead for 13 years.
About the Authors:
Folami and Abeni Morris are a sister-sister writing team. Together they wrote (and rewrote) The Exemeus series, somehow managing to accomplish it without murdering one another. Despite their facial similarities, tendency to finish each other’s thoughts and stick up for each other constantly, no, they’re not twins and thus deserve their own individual bio.Folami Morris
Folami grew up in the tiny city of San Mateo Ca, where nothing ever happens and no one ever leaves. She went to Xavier University for undergraduate, getting her B.A in physics and her B.S in Biology. After graduation she returned to California, to live in an even smaller city, where even less happens, Antioch Ca. During this time she escaped the monotony by hanging out with her imaginary friends Hyalee and Dephon, and by writing the Exemeus. She finally escaped to Queens NY and now realizes that quiet and tiny aren’t so bad.Abeni Morris
As luck (and logic) would have it, Abeni grew up in the same tiny little town as her sister, then she too escaped to the tinier town of Antioch. She has yet to leave. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood development from Cal State East Bay. She is the mom of two amazing kids, who swear that they deserve a percentage of the book proceeds and a ton of the credit. At least she raised dreamers.

HOT Excerpt from Chapter 1 of Vanilla on Top

I smirk with a confidence I’m not completely feeling. “Nice of you to join me, Tony.” I relax against the brick and check him over from head to foot, making sure he knows with just my eyes exactly how desirable I find him. You can do this, don’t panic. He won’t laugh at you.

I nod toward the stacked chairs. “Take off your coat.” He slips the expensive garment from his shoulders, pulling the starched fabric of his shirt across his defined chest. I nod my approval and his eyes glint with desire in the dimming light.

He smiles, seemingly eager to play whatever game I’ve got in mind. “Anything else?”

I push down my inner anxiety and grin, in what I hope is a teasing manner. “Your tie.”

His eyebrows shoot up, but he loosens the knot and pulls the material free. The red silk slides over his shirt, and then is tossed carelessly toward his coat.

Holy crap, he’s doing it. He’s listening to me. What now?

“Unbutton the top two buttons of your shirt.” The command springs unbidden to my thoughts.

He complies and reveals the golden skin below his throat, with a few stray chest hairs visible near the neck of his undershirt. He looks so good I’d like to grab his shirt and rip it open, licking the skin as it’s uncovered.

Holy cow, where did that come from? I’m not this aggressive woman I’m pretending to be.

“How’s that?” he asks.

My pulse pounds so loudly in my ears I can only nod, afraid I’ll give too much away if I answer. I clear my throat, reaching for nonchalance. “It’ll do.” My hands slide to my hips and I take the plunge, pouring every ounce of courage I possess into my next actions.

I grab my skirt’s black material and work it slowly up my thighs. Tony’s eyes grow round as he follows my movements.

“Get down on your knees,” I say, forcing out my voice in a firm tone. Keep it together, girl! He looks like he’s game. Keep going.

I tug the fabric up, until my skirt scrunches up around my waist and my black lace underwear is bared to the night air. The handsome man’s breath rushes out and I worry he’s going to balk, leaving me here with my skirt rucked up like a fool.

The intensity of the sexual moment overwhelms me a bit and I slide a finger over my heated mound, teasing the aroused flesh underneath. Desire pushes me to be bold. “Did you not hear me, Tony?” Strength pours into my voice, making me sound more sure of myself than I feel. God, if he laughs at me now, I’ll die.

Tony steps closer and sinks to the cobblestone terrace, reaching with two eager hands toward my hips. He buries his face in my crotch and breathes deeply. “You smell so good.” He rubs his cheek back and forth against my panties. “What do you want me to do?”

A shudder ripples through me as the breath of his whispered voice warms my skin through the thin lace. He wants me to tell him what to do. I can do this.

“Kiss me,” I rasp, my voice barely above a whisper.

His soft lips press against the thin garment as the heat from his flesh teases me higher. My every sense feels on high alert during this encounter. I’ve never done anything so daring in my entire life. The next kiss presses harder and little shocks of arousal dart through my core.

“That’s nice,” I say, resisting the primal urge to grind myself into his face. “But I need more.”

I glance down into Tony’s light brown eyes and see an intensity I’ve never seen on a man’s face. To know it’s directed toward me feels even more amazing. “Tell me what you want.” His hot hands skate up my thighs to rest near the aroused juncture between my legs.

I feel the wetness pooling in my panties, my body eager and ready to be with this man I just met. More than anything I want his fingers teasing me to a release. “Slip your thumbs under my underwear and stroke me.”

He pulls his hot lips away from the damp cotton panel of my panties and breathes deep. “Yes, ma’am.”

A prickling ignites my skin, sending the hairs on end when he calls me ma’am. I like it.

I like it a lot.

Two thick digits slide under the delicate fabric, one angling for my aroused bud and one slipping deeper toward my waiting wetness. A jolt of pleasure rips through me the second his thumb makes contact with my clit. An instant later, his other thumb presses against my tight opening.

“You’re very wet.” His voice rumbles into the evening, almost reverent, like I’m a precious object he’s not sure how to handle. “I want to taste you.”

“Not yet.” There’s no way I could handle his mouth right now. I’d lose it completely and my credibility on driving the bus in this scenario would blow up in my face. My breath hitches and I gather myself, aiming for calm, cool and collected. “Only when I say.”

A moan of protest echoes into the night, cutting off when his hungry kisses pepper my thighs. My legs widen of their own accord and I slide down the cool brick a fraction of an inch, heedless of the snags my clothes will receive. The stiffness of his thumb pushes deep inside me and after a few plunges a small groan erupts from my lips.

It’s been months since I’ve been with anyone. I’m so turned on by this man doing exactly what I want, what I told him to do, that I fear I won’t last long. The slick pressure on my clit starts to circle, driving me even higher.

“Come here and kiss my mouth,” I say. His hands pull away and I feel bereft of his touch. I hastily add, “Don’t stop touching me. Use your fingers instead.”

In a flash, the sexy businessman stands, ravaging my mouth with a passion I’ve never had directed toward me. A deep rumble sounds in his throat while his lips cover mine. The frenzied action reveals his pent-up arousal and desire, and I’m almost giddy with the power surge I feel. He truly wants me. Not just what I can do for him, but wants me and what I’m making him feel. What a rush!

Two slick fingers pump into my sex while Tony sucks on my bottom lip, nipping it once in his haste. He leans in to deepen the kiss and the length of his erection presses against my hip. I want nothing more than to tell him to take me right here—to beg this gorgeous man to do me until I scream his name—but a part of my brain still holds on to the act.

I bet he can have any woman he wants any time. I need to stand out from the others. For once, I want to be the desired one. My mind empties as exquisite waves of pleasure build and spill through my limbs.

I break the intense kiss to focus on what I need to do. “On your knees,” I whisper. “Now.”

Interview with Brett Davis

Please welcome Brett Davis to Fang-tastic Books today.
Brett, what is it about the paranormal that fascinates you so much?
First of all, thank you, Roxanne, for this opportunity. As for the paranormal, for me, it's a way to look at life from a different angle. Paranormal stories are usually about the real world but they add a twist and let writers explore some pretty serious issues — how we treat others who are different from us, or how we would behave if we could live forever — in a fun way.
What inspired you to write this book?
I wanted to write a secret agent adventure story that explained why it was that the hero never gets killed. My way of explaining that was to make him a zombie. He can't be killed because he's already dead!
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Getting into the head of my zombie character was pretty tough, as he's sort of mentally frozen in 1983. I have him in the modern world now and had to try to keep track of what he would know about this world and what he wouldn't understand.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
My lead female character, Abigail Callisto, was fun to write. She's an electronics whiz with a flair for the dramatic and is a bit of a secret agent herself. Her character grew and developed over the course of the rewrites and in the end I have her taking up a pretty serious responsibility.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
The final showdown scene is my favorite. Some of the zombie lore I used is pretty accurate to actual voodoo, but at the end I introduce a pretty big twist of my own. You haven't ever seen a zombie behave like this before.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
The whole concept and structure of voodoo is really interesting. It's one of the last pantheistic religions in the world and the way the gods interact with people is very different from most other religions. It's very direct in some cases.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of?
Well, let's just say that by the end of the book the title character is being kept alive by the love of a young girl, and love can be a fickle thing sometimes.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
Sometimes. I have made my living as a writer since college, or even high school, really, so I know you just have to power through it and get something on paper. Even if you have to change it later, at least you have something to work with.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
I would say I started writing seriously when I was 21, and haven't stopped, although I take a break now and then.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
Photography is number one, right up there with writing. I love to take pictures in any form, digital or film. Travel is next, and fortunately those two go together very well.
What can readers expect next from you?
A sequel to this book, although it's still in the planning stages. And, last year I wrote and shot an indie movie, so now I'm editing that and hope to have it out somewhere later this year. It has vampires!

The leading man is a ex-Navy SEAL controlled by a witch doctor. When he meets an American girl caught up in island intrigue, they fall in love even though he's been dead longer than she's been alive.
About the Author
Brett O’Neal Davis is a native of Florence, Ala., and attended the same high school as Sam Phillips, who discovered Elvis Presley. He studied journalism at the University of North Alabama and the University of Missouri, writing about music whenever possible. He also briefly “fronted” the one-man punk band Screwhead. Despite clearing $1.50 in profit on consignment sales of the band’s lone album at Salt of the Earth Records in Columbia, Mo., he turned to the slightly more stable world of aerospace and defense journalism, working today in the field of unmanned systems and robotics in Washington, D.C.
He is the author of four science fiction and fantasy novels, all published by Baen Books. The first, The Faery Convention, was listed among the best fantasy novels for 1995 by Science Fiction Chronicle, and Two Tiny Claws was named to the 2000 Books for the Teen Age List by the New York Public Library. An occasional panelist at area science fiction conventions, he also has discussed fiction writing at National Press Club events and at literary festivals, including the annual T.S. Stribling celebration at the University of North Alabama. Mama Lona’s Man is his first foray into paranormal romance, but it won’t be the last.
