Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. June 2016 Read: For June, we will dive in to the past and read some of the first stories ever to be considered Science Fiction. For June, we read Classic Sci-fi.

"Classic Novel" is defined in many ways. The interpretation we are using is "... something that has come to be considered one of the best of its kind, is an example of excellence, & has been popular for a long time."

For this poll, after much toil and discussion, we have decided to stick to old books which are less mind-bendy like the utopian books and more creature oriented. Below are books about monsters, aliens, and adventure! I chose only the most recognizable titles from before the 1920s (mostly from the 1800s) and I am sure you will notice that HG Wells & Jules Verne both have two selections each in this poll since their books were most widely recognized in this genre from this time period.
