Twirl and Dip (WIP)
She glanced at him as if startled by the questions. "I'm fine."
"Just fine?"
Her eyes narrowed, and he prepared himself for the onslaught of tongue lashing he was sure to get. "You didn't think I'd pine away for you, did you? I moved on just like you did." She squeezed her eyes closed before looking at him again with a shake of her head. "That was rude. I'm sorry."
He studied her with longing with longing he couldn't hide. He didn't have the words to make what he did go away. He hurt her and he'd done it on purpose, making him the biggest jerk in the world. "I didn't think you would pine away for me. You're the strongest-minded woman I know, and you deserved better than my sorry arse."
Once she realized he meant what he said, her shoulders relaxed. "It seems a lifetime ago that you left," she said. "So much has happened in my life, and yet, seeing you again…"
"It conjures old memories," he finished her thought.
"Yes," she said with a sigh.
"Not all bad, I hope." And he prayed she would agree.
"No, not all bad." She gave him a whisper of a smile.

Snippet: WIP (Last week, Drake and Eastyn speak at the same time.)
"You first," he said since it was the gentlemanly thing to do after all.
"I saw your performance on TV the other night," she said as she reached for her soda.
"Yeah, which one?"
Her slender shoulders lifted in a shrug. "I'm not sure where it was, but someone had posted it online. I think you were at the Greek. You were really… uh… energetic."
He wanted to laugh at her choice of words, but she at least attempted to talk to him, and it was more than he deserved. "Thank you, I guess. Was that a compliment?"
(That was ten. A little more.)
Her lips twitched, but she didn't full-out smile. She was holding back, but if small talk was what she wanted, he'd oblige for now.
"How are your parents?" he asked. He spent so many evenings there at their dinner table, and yet it seemed a lifetime ago.
"Good. They're both good."
He nodded. "Your Aunt Janet?" He always liked her aunt. She had a great sense of humor and made the best homemade pizza.
"She's doing well, too."
And you?" he asked, his voice lowering a notch. "How are you, Eastyn?"

Snippet: WIP
He headed back up front, where he found Eastyn seated at the counter, waiting for him before she dug into her sandwich. He slid onto the stool next to her.
"I didn't know what chips you wanted," she said. "You used to like corn chips."
"Still do," he told her and tore open the bag, dumping the chips onto his plate. He reached for the grilled sandwich with the bread fried to a golden brown. He bit into the cheesy goodness and closed his eyes. Summer days and moments with Eastyn, and all of it flooded his memories of home. He took another bite and another. Neither spoke, but the whole time, he was itching to ask her a million questions.

Like, did she have a boyfriend because if she did, that would put a kink in his plans to woo her? Well, it wouldn't be easy anyway.
She must have had a few questions for him, and they both spoke at the same time, making them chuckled, which broke the tension.

Snippet: WIP
A few minutes later, she placed dishes on the counter with grilled cheese sandwiches, then tossed a few chip bags there, too. Grabbing two bottles of soda pop from behind the counter, she popped the cap with opener she must have nailed to the counter. As she poured the dark fizzy liquid into to glasses filled with ice, the crackle and pop filled the air from the sudden intrusion.
"Foods done," she said and her clear blue eyes met his. It didn't take her long to realize he'd been staring. Her cheeks flushed a pretty pink that slid to her ears and didn't that just make her look even more adorable.
"I'll wash up first," he said and stood to his full height and headed for the bathroom with sure easy strides despite the jumble of nerves he felt rippling in his belly. He was going to have lunch with the woman. Sure, it was one of many he had with her before but this one was different. This one would tell him if he had a remote chance of starting over with her, making things right.

Snippet: WIP
Did she invite him to join her? He cleared his throat. "I'd love a grilled cheese sandwich. Thank you," he said and was surprised at how calm his voice sounded as if this proved the most normal invitation from an ex who should probably hate him.
"Coming right up," she announced and went to work at the large stove top in front of the bar meant for frying up multiple meals at the same time, just like in the 40s diners of old, only this appliance appeared much newer.
He had fixed the sign but stayed rooted at the table instead of going outside and hanging the fixture. If he did, he wouldn't be able to watch Eastyn cook or listen to her hum as she prepared them lunch. So he stayed and let the flood of memories reminded him of another time: her cooking him a meal while they chatted about what adventure they'd partake in for the day. He would help prepare, too, by chopping and mincing, though he was sure Eastyn would claim he snacked more than helped. His lips curved at the memory of days gone by, but when she glanced over her shoulder at him, he quickly lowered his gaze and pretended to fiddle with the wires.

Snippet:
Eastyn hadn't been all dolled up like the women who draped his arms when he attended the Hollywood parties and premieres. No she wore jeans and a vintage Civilized Heathens tee, makeup to a minimum and her hair pulled pack in a ponytail. More beautiful than he remembered, and he had pretty good memory. God, he missed her so damn much.
However, daydreaming about her was out of the question if he wanted to fix her sign. A few seconds later he found the culprit that put the W and I in the Twirl and Dip on the fritz. "There you are," he murmured to the faulty wire. As he worked with careful moves a surgeon would be proud of, the scent of something sweet a buttery wafted on the air, making him wondered what the delectable treat tantalized his senses could be, even his stomach rumbled as if anticipating a sample.
"It's almost noon," Eastyn announced and he looked up to see her by the counter, obviously keeping her distance from him. Probably a good idea since he wasn't sure how well behaved, he'd be if she came too close. He wanted to draw her into his arms.

His fantasy of holding her again almost made him miss her next words.
"It's nothing fancy. I'm making grilled cheese, but you're welcome to join me if you want."

He should have listened to Eastyn and waited, but no. Before he left, he got on one knee, proposed, and pledged he would be back for a fall wedding. There's nothing worthy about broken promises etched in tears.
He stopped what he was doing and took in the shop's décor of pink and turquoise, down to the leather seats and stools at the counter, gave the 50s style soda shop charm. Luckily, his stupidity didn't stop her from making her dreams a reality and opening the restaurant.
He caught sight of the jukebox in the corner which matched the color scheme to perfection. He thought he heard a record playing a few minutes ago but now it stood quiet. He glanced toward the doorway of the kitchen where Eastyn worked preparing her pastries or whatever she planned for the day. He wished she peek out just so he could see her face again. He hadn't laid eyes on her for five years before today, but when he had, his heart slammed into his chest as if he'd suddenly been jolted awake.
