Twirl and Dip #SnipSun #snippetsunday @KMNbooks @JudgeYourBook
From the snippet a few weeks ago. I posted the next few paragraphs from there. Before they went into the kitchen, Drake asked if Eastyn would arrange an evening at the park where they show movies during the summer with some old friends of theirs. She didn't think it was a good idea.
This is Eastyn speaking as she offers a sweet from the oven.:
"Do you want to try one? I added something extra to the mix and I'd like it if you told me what you thought."
Snippet:
"I'm not one to pass up a dessert."
She found a spatula and scooped a cookie on to a plate. Then she went into her walk-in freezer and pulled out vanilla ice cream and scooped a generous amount on top of the cookie.
Handing him a fork, she slid the plate toward him. "Be careful, the cookie still hot."
He took her warning and took a cautious bite but with the cool ice cream the oven hot cookie didn't do any harm. The gooey goodness tantalized the tongue with chocolate, toffee and something he couldn't detect but surely he'd died and gone to heaven.
"Well?" she asked.
He held up his hand and took another bite, chewing at his leisure. She pursed her lips and her hands went to her slim hips.

He chuckled. "It's the best, Eastyn. I haven't tasted anything like it."
This won him a wide grin and her eyes sparkled with delight.
"So, what's the special ingredient?" he asked as he took another bite.
"Can't say."
"And if you did, you'd have to kill me?"
"That could still be arranged." She winked, but then became serious. "Okay."
"Okay what?" He frowned, not following.
"I'll call Piper and Billy and arrange for us to all meet at Burry Park."
He wanted to do a fist pump and yell 'yes!' but since it probably wouldn't go over well, so he settled on saying, "That would be perfect." Well, almost perfect. He wanted to win Eastyn's heart again and that required much more than sharing lunch and dessert. She didn't trust him yet. He could see it in her eyes and the way she watched him. She had her guard up and he couldn't blame her. They had a past. They'd been best friends and so much more but it didn't mean she wanted to revisit what they once had anytime soon. Maybe she never would again but he had to try. Being so close to her now made him wonder what the hell he'd been thinking to risk it all in the first place? Stupid. Yeah, plain and simple off his rocker stupid.

She seeks help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lars' rock-and-roll life just may be the death of them, too.

Three decades later, 30-year-old Rowan Beckett recalls things only Haley Rose would know, and she can belt out songs in the same unique fashion. However, Rowan couldn't be the missing rock star since Haley would now be in her 50s. Could Haley Rose have come back reincarnated as Rowan Beckett? Or is Rowan as delusional as her family suspects?

"Sounds lonely." Her voice had softened, and he met her gaze.
Snippet:
"Sometimes, yes," he told her and wanted to tell her so much more. He missed being able to share his dreams and his worries with someone who really cared about him. He was always on his guard of late, never knowing if what he said would end up in the news, and if it did, it was never an exact quote, but something contorted to fit the story they were after. "Eastyn–"
A timer went off in the kitchen and the moment ended.
"Excuse me," she said and hurried to the other room. He slid off the stool and followed. He spotted her reaching for mittens on the counter before turning toward the ovens. She pulled out trays filled with large shaped cookies, and another one with muffins. That must have been the sweet scent wafting on the air he detected earlier.
"Those look yummy and smell great, too."

"You always did have a sweet tooth." She smiled and he was glad the tension from moments ago seemed to have evaporated.

"In the media, it looked like friends always surrounded you," she said as if the word friend proved vile. "New friends," she added. "I thought you forgot all about us little folks back home."
Snippet:
He sighed heavily with regret. He wanted to reach out so many time but after he broke things off the way he had with Eastyn he thought nobody would want to talk to him. "I was surrounded by people. There's a difference. I'm not sure which ones are my friends and it always seems like they want something from me."
She didn't say anything for a few seconds. He didn't want to look at her. He didn't say that to get sympathy. He just stated the facts.

Something new I'm working on. It's a second mer-tale with Sirena and Jack from Mermaid Cove and Seaside Sundaes. (Work in Progress)
Title might be: Yo Ho Ho and Buttered Rum Shortbread
Snippet:
Jack O'Casey would be arriving soon for their morning dive, a ritual they entertained daily. During the summer months, they took to the sea at the entrance of smuggler's cave, located beneath her store where rum smugglers of old docked to unload their goods. During the winter months, they opted for taking Jack's boat. Being a half-mermaid, the bloodline being from the Merrow clan of Ireland, the ocean's temperament didn't hamper her in the least, but it could prove treacherous for Jack, who was human, and the cave's entrance proved tricky when there were calm waters, but perilous when stormy.
Sirena donned the black bikini, then slipped on her blue jeans and long-sleeved shirt with yellow and white flowers. Next, she gathered her long curls to the nape of her neck and grabbed the ponytail holder on the dresser wrapping the strands within its folds. Once done, she glanced in the mirror with a nod of approval then jogged downstairs from her two-bedroom flat to her store below. She glanced at the clock on the wall behind the counter. "5:20," she murmured. Plenty of time for her morning activities planned: Diving and then baking shortbread at Jack's restaurant before heading back to open Smuggler's Den at ten.

Meeting another Merrow is a surreal but swimming away to live happily ever after in an ocean world is not as sweetly tempting as Sirena thought. Where the mer-prince goes, Jack cannot follow. Giving up what she and Jack have is like giving up sweets—forever.
At the New Year's Eve bash, the prince will reveal what he's cooked up, but he's about to underestimate Jack, who has no trouble preparing a plan of his own.

"Billy is going to be a father?" he said with a chuckle. "I can't imagine." The last he'd seen Billy, he was still riding his motorcycle to places and working at the hardwood store. "We should all get together." The words came out of his mouth before he could rein them in but since it was the out there, why stop now. "Maybe we could all meet at Burry Park for a movie. Like old times."
She stared at him as if he'd lost his marbles, but it was worth a shot that she'd agree, but then her next words left him deflated.

End of the Road
Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago, and his death was ruled an unfortunate accident. Despite the fact that he can't recall what happened to him in his last moments of life, he is convinced that he was murdered. He has been trapped in limbo until his daughter Cecilia unearths his journal and is able to see him. She seeks help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lars' rock-and-roll life just may be the death of them, too.

The '80s rock star Haley Rose and her boyfriend went missing without a trace on October 31, 1988 and were eventually presumed dead. Three decades later, 30-year-old Rowan Beckett recalls things only Haley Rose would know, and she can belt out songs in the same unique fashion. However, Rowan couldn't be the missing rock star since Haley would now be in her 50s. Could Haley Rose have come back reincarnated as Rowan Beckett? Or is Rowan as delusional as her family suspects?

Snippet: WIP (cont. from last week where Drake told Eastyn he wasn't seeing his girlfriend anymore.
"We want different things. She wants to be in the limelight and she's not happy if she's not the center of attention." Though Tara wanted to separate, she'd been blowing up his phone with her texts, wanting to get back together, but he knew she didn't mean it. It was probably a publicity stunt to keep her name in the tabloids. At the last photos hoot he was at with the band, the photographer told him Tara's budding career as an actor had slid when she announced she didn't like puppies or something of the sort on the set of her last movie. Who doesn't like puppies?
Thinking about movies had him wondering about summer nights in Hartsville, and he asked: "Do they still show movies downtown during the summer?"
City Hall used to set up an inflatable 25-foot screen in Burry Park with movies beginning after sunset. They'd go every Friday and snuggle close despite the heat and munch on homemade popcorn they'd microwave before leaving the house. Eastyn would bring soda pop from her fridge.

"Yes, they do," she said. "The first one starts in a few days."
"Really?" he didn't quite keep the excitement from his voice. "Those summer nights were fun. Piper and Billy would join us sometimes, too." Piper was her best friend since they were in diapers, or so they tell everyone. Their mothers had been friends since grade school. "Are Billy and Piper still together?" He realized he didn't even know.
She reached for her soda and took a sip before answering. "They're married and expecting their first baby. Any day now."

Eastyn has her soda shop to run and specialty ice creams to create. Only the place is falling apart, and she may have a haunted jukebox that chooses songs to communicate. "So…you aren't pining," he said and hemmed and hawed to say more but then decided what the hell. He might as well find out now. "Does that mean you're seeing someone?" Please say no. Please say no, he chanted silently to himself.
Her back went rim rod straight again.
Shit, he mentally chastised himself. He should have eased into that question better.
"I don't believe that's any of your concern." Her words plucked angrily, ready to snap their moment of a truce.

"You're right, but I'm curious, you know, as a friend," he said and knew if he didn't say something smoother to ease the tension, she'd end their conversation altogether. "We were once friends," he hurried to say, and that seemed to catch her attention. She met his gaze, and his confidence picked up a beat. "I hope you will one day be my friend again," he added. "I miss her." He held his breath for her response, and dang, the woman took her sweet time in answering him.
"Not at the moment," she finally said, making him frown.
Not at the moment. She didn't even want to be friends?
"I mean," she said and tucked an imaginary hair behind her ear, a nervous tick he remembered all too well. "I mean," she said again. "I'm not seeing anyone right now."
Which meant she had been with someone in the past. Of course, she'd dated, idiot. Only, he didn't want to think about someone else holding her and kissing her, and he refused to let his mind imagine what else this guy had done. He swallowed back the lump of regret, threatening to choke him.
"And you," she asked. "Are you still seeing that model?" The words seemed to stick in her throat.
Maybe she'd been just as curious to know about his love life. "Officially, we broke it off two months ago, but truthfully, it had been much longer than that. We haven't been in sync for a while."
