Um 7:30 start my first business day after isolation. Today with me: the mask and a form signed by me, on which I confirm that I have not left Shanghai in the past 14 days, that I have not met any infected people and that I am healthy myself. As these forms always require a passport number, the passport must also be included. When I leave the residential complex in which I live, I get a day pass, which I hand in again if I want to go in at night. This way, the property management keeps track of who has just returned to Shanghai and has to register.
The office floor is mostly empty and cold. We are looking forward to finally seeing our colleagues who are not isolated. Of course without physical contact and with a respectable distance. My weekly ration of masks is ready on the desk. After work, it goes back home in record time. Past closed shops and restaurants. I am no longer isolated, but it dawns on me that the difference in everyday life will only be formal. Back in the house, I'm alone again. My wife and children are still in Germany. Numerous neighbors as well.

Um 7.30 Uhr beginnt mein erster Arbeitstag nach der Isolation. Heute mit dabei: die Maske und ein von mir unterschriebenes Formular, auf dem ich bestätige, dass ich Shanghai in den vergangenen 14 Tagen nicht verlassen sowie keine infizierten Personen getroffen habe und selbst gesund bin. Da diese Formulare immer eine Passnummer erfordern, muss der Reisepass auch mit. Bei der Ausfahrt aus dem Wohnkomplex, in dem ich lebe, bekomme ich einen Tagespass, den ich wieder abgebe, wenn ich abends hineinmöchte. So behält die Hausverwaltung den Überblick, wer gerade nach Shanghai zurückkommt und sich registrieren muss.
Die Büroetage ist größtenteils leer und kalt. Man freut sich herzlich, endlich die Kollegen wiederzusehen, die nicht isoliert sind. Natürlich ohne Körperkontakt und mit respektablem Abstand. Auf dem Schreibtisch liegt meine Wochenration an Masken bereit. Nach Feierabend geht es wieder in Rekordzeit zurück nach Hause. Vorbei an geschlossenen Geschäften und Restaurants. Ich bin zwar nicht mehr isoliert, doch es dämmert mir, dass der Unterschied im Alltag nur formeller Natur sein wird. Zurück im Haus, bin ich wieder alleine. Meine Frau und unsere Kinder sind noch in Deutschland. Zahlreiche Nachbarn ebenso.
Die viruseindämmenden Maßnahmen in Shanghai werden an den folgenden Tagen entgegen meinen Erwartungen noch verschärft. Jüngste Vorkehrung.

Was amazed to learn at luncheon in Canyon with a friend yesterday (3/14/20), Bill R., (who is my old landlord in SF, and who's brother-in-law is in the defense industry in the Virginia, DC area), that he said that the COVID19 virus occurred from an archery contest in Wuhan, China, and Americans (and Chinese to, I think) were part of this, and that there was a vial (presumably with genetic material in it) involved ....

So philosophical skepticism with all the evidence one hears in this very strange time of novel corona virus COVID19 has very much merit.

But I wonder further, very very speculatively, that some people hopped on a airplane to Italy, Iran, South Korea, and the state of Washington, and thus spread the virus from this vial ... (see, too, this speculatively and questioning radical action blog post - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/03/rabies-dramatic-it-seems-1-as-if-some.html - re thinking about this line of inquiry further, but where this archery and vial explanation and origin is a brand new contribution to asking questions about all of this).

As a member of the RSOF, and with non-theist Friendly leanings, and having had a person from San Francisco Friends/Quaker Meeting (SFFM) say he was from Ministry and Counsel ask to meet me in a park for hiking along Skyline Drive in Oakland to talk on behalf of this committee, mention another woman in SFFM Quaker Meeting who was also on this committee (re legitimacy or collaborator even???), and then proceed to tell me his erotic fantasies for kids (his niece/nephew pulling his pants down - which hints at incest too), I don't know if I think Online Quaker Meetings would help prevent against such a subculture among Friends/ Quakers. He seemed also to be seeking to invite me onto this committee, or possibly similarly 'corrupt" or 'co-opt'??? me. And then, in a related vein which psychiatry would potentially help with I think, - observing a young person come on sexually to me, and onto another young person, I again don't know whether online Meetings would be protective to Friends / Quakers / individuals, newly in the context of the 'National Emergency' regarding the novel coronavirus (which may have many subtexts regarding protection of Americans, for example) that the US government declared yesterday, if such issues as I mention above aren't addressed by excellent psychiatrists, and potentially in a Quaker vein. There are other related issues I whistle-blew about at SFFM 2 or so years ago, and never addressed. (I realize there may have been mitigating circumstances with people from other countries involved at SFFM, and who may have been psychotic - as Friend Brigitte Alexander, touched on in an email to me a month or two ago ), that compounds these issues, for example. But I am concerned that SFFM and PYM as well haven't addressed these issues in a way that psychiatry could offer help for. (Brig's husband, George Alexander MD, was a brilliant psychiatrist, and with a fair amount of experience with Quaker Meetings and Quakers too, albeit an atheist, but has since passed away, and both Friends Caleb Alexander MD, as well as his mother Brig might have some good ideas in these regards and concerning finding a good psychiatric team and similar). There are some other instances of sexual misconduct with kids which I observed at SFFM I'm not mentioning here.
So, I hope that the SF Quaker Meeting, and Pacific Yearly Meeting (and any other related Quaker Meetings - FGC, etc.?), can try (excellent) psychiatry, and regarding the law (state and federal), as well as management by the Boards of SFFM / PYM / FGC (realizing that not all Quaker Meetings have Boards). And I have the sense that these Meetings have not addressed their issues with sexual misconduct with children, for example. CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch is planning online psychiatry - and in all ~200 countries' official and main languages - but WUaS isn't there yet. For the time being, there's the ongoing potential to call Friends' Hospital in Philadelphia (it's the oldest continuously operated mental hospital in the US, since 1813, and is still operated in the manner of Friends in one way or another, I think) for assessments. Since a National Emergency was called yesterday at the US federal level with regards to the 'corona' meme (replicating cultural unit), I wonder too whether there might an opportunity anew to begin addressing these Meetings' issues beginning early next week - potentially to the great benefit of the parties involved. I'm writing to further follow up on my concerns about misconduct with children in the SF Quaker Meeting, and possibly in PYM, as well as in other Quaker organizations (FGC?, New England Yearly Meeting, PFM? ... ),

Brigitte, and Caleb (MD), thanks for your email today to me, about your thoughts for responding to sexual misconduct with children (as paraphilia potentially - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovemap), for example, in Quaker Meetings, which I've added below. And thanks for acknowledging explicitly that it occurs in Quaker Meetings (an important first step in psychiatry, I understand), and naming the pathology (or ? ... a better term than sexual misconduct or paraphilia?), I think some might say. And since you came from Germany at age 4 to Quakers in Philadelphia, and attended Quaker schools, and then MIT, I appreciate your perspective as a refugee (and Holocaust survivor as well) especially. I'll add that I've felt like a refugee from a deeply wrong-doing SF Quaker Meeting at times in recent years, and wonder how to protect innocent children there into the future. Perhaps we can all develop a conversation about how to stop this situation among Friends, at SFFM, and even as a kind of, or expression, Quakerly conscientious objection. And I'm learning also about approaches to such issues for MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School - about how to stop situations that potentially harm people, and turn them into victims? Further thoughts, all? And I do think of this as a psychiatric issue (protecting children from sexual predators), rather than an issue of autonomy of Quaker Meetings (which you suggest today, Brig), that can be addressed best and to the benefit of many parties by excellent psychiatry. By calling Friends Hospital out of the state of California and asking for an assessment, I think there's much potential to protect kids in a way that might not be possible by seeking medical support in the SF Bay Area.
Brig, to refresh your memory about what you wrote on Friday, December 13, 2019, here's a quote:

Since a National Emergency was called on Friday, March 13, 2020, at the US federal level with regards to the 'corona' meme (replicating cultural unit), I wonder too whether there might an opportunity anew to begin addressing these Meetings' issues beginning early next week - potentially to the great benefit of the parties involved. Friends' Hospital's phone number again is 215-831-4600 for assessments. I'm concerned with protecting Quaker kids (and regarding one ~10 year old, D.S., for example, who looked abused when I knew him in First Day School at SFFM, but for which I don't have evidence).

Re the latest one, about pedophilia in Quaker meetings, I can't recall what I wrote before but here are some thoughts now:
1. Each Meeting is autonomous and every situation is different - thus there is unlikely to be a universal solution.2. A Meeting first has to be alerted to a problem and try to determine whose problem it is, the person's or the Meeting's.3. Depending on that, there are usually local resources that can be marshaled to address the problem. 4. Friends Hospital has undergone many changes since the 80's when all three of our kids worked there for a year. It is nolonger a Quaker, free standing institution but part of one of the larger medical systems. That does not preclude it havingable staff, but that similar able staff exists in S.F. No reason to call F.H.5. If you think this is a special problem of Quaker meetings you could try writing an article for the Friends Journal and see if the editors agree.6. Personally I think this situation exists in many areas of our society. Most parents try to teach their children how to protectthemselves against exploitation, unwanted touching, etc. 7. In Pittsburgh Meeting adults who have contact with the children are screened. I don't know the full protocol.

Meditation and Yoga seem sensible in this infodemic, which may be scaring people in different ways (all of Italy is in lock down, not just 16 million people in northern Italy, for ex.), where meaningless 'memes' per Dawkins - see “Richard Dawkins and the meaningless meme” https://gu.com/p/3gzcq/stw (as a fascinating clarification of what memes mean for him, and regarding his playing the clarinet into a swirl of related color and shape behind him and all around at video's close ... all as memes) - are going viral as #ViralMemes (replicating cultural units). Dawkins coined newly the word meme in his 1976 "Selfish Gene" book drawing a comparison to genes, but on the cultural side of life, in contrast to the biological side, and mentioning in particular, as example, the 'aggressive' rabies' virus as genes which replicate themselves by making the host mammal thirsty and aggressive/attacking - and for the the way ideas propagate from mind to mind (ranging from a favorite novel to a pretty summer dress were examples he gave, I think).
Memes would also be meaningless regarding genes which replicate, and these COVID-19 ones which do so aggressively.

A great deficit in news' reporting and data sources, to my way of thinking, is the lack of distinction and clarity between the novel COVID-19 virus and known coronaviruses (see, for example, this NYT's article which mentions 4 known coronaviruses ), news' source to news' source, data source to data source, country to country and language to language - and regarding what else could be happening under the news' 'blitz' on coronavirus; see https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/03/diamond-eureka-this-start-up-is-using.html - regarding Francis Boyle's "Bioweapons Expert Speaks Out About Novel Coronavirus" as well as very speculatively regarding possible 'radical actions.' And could this also even have been a genetic 'goofball' 'accident' or experiment, by possible related genetics' biology laboratories? ????? All ethical minefields of the highest order. (And re all 5 possible radical actions I mention here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/03/diamond-eureka-this-start-up-is-using.html - and with the WHO continuing to call this infodemic a PANDEMIC, a 'pan'-demic? )
Appreciating yesterday, in a related vein, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article: "UPMC testing, but still no positive COVID-19 tests"https://www.post-gazette.com/news/health/2020/03/09/UPMC-still-has-no-positive-COVID-19-tests/stories/202003090104with its explicit focus on COVID-19 (and possibly in contrast to 'known' coronaviruses), and testing (and that Pgh hasn't seen any cases yet).
In all the press I've read (and it's been a fair amount, and in 2 languages), there's been no clear distinction, again, between the novel COVID-19 virus and known coronaviruses (see, for example, this NYT's article which mentions 4 known coronaviruses, and COVID-19's lack of effect on kids in China, curiously):"Inside China’s all-out war on the coronavirus"

Memes would also be meaningless regarding genes which replicate, and can be deadly, and these COVID-19 ones which do so aggressively.
Meditation and Yoga seem sensible in this infodemic, which may be scaring people in different ways (e.g. all of Italy is in lock down, not just the 16 million people in northern Italy, for ex.), where meaningless 'memes' per Dawkins - see “Richard Dawkins and the meaningless meme” https://gu.com/p/3gzcq/stw (as a fascinating clarification of what memes mean for him, and regarding too his playing the clarinet into a swirl of related color and shape behind him and all around at video's close ... all as memes) - are going viral as #ViralMemes (replicating cultural units). Dawkins coined newly the word meme in his 1976 "Selfish Gene" book drawing a comparison or direct parallel with genes, conceptually but on the cultural side of life, in contrast to the biological side, and mentioning in particular, as an example, the 'aggressive' rabies' virus as genes which replicate themselves by making the host mammal thirsty and attack / aggressive - and for the the way ideas propagate from mind to mind (ranging from a favorite novel to a pretty summer dress were examples he gave, I think).
What to do in a time of emergency like this? And could / will a similar experiment / 'accident,' if this hypothesis is plausible, happen in the areas where we live?
And how can MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch planning to code for all 7.5 billion people (each a Wikidata PIN #, Wikidata Q-item # in Wikidata's 300 languages, or similar ... ), help further with "Rapid response capabilities needed: molecular diagnostics, vaccines, neutralizing antibodies, and homes easily converted to off-the-grid full-recycling quarantine-biospheres. Not just for this epidemic, but the next one" beyond the ideas spelled out in the 3 blog entries above, I wonder?

Hi All,

Glad to hear that Barbara Salisbury on the mend, and may come back to play for Scottish Country Dancing in Open Band on a Monday at some point - such good news!

Regarding the Novel Corona Virus COVID19 (INFODEMIC) it seems further understandable, hypothetically - that the Wuhan virus one is the novel one per Boyle (see below) and with limited lifespan and highly contagious as genes (and some people got on a plane and flew to Italy and Iran and state of Washington with it etc., and spread it), and also then that there's a different 'normal' or "known" corona viruses, one which turns up in many tests, and isn't quite so deadly it seems. Am keeping my eyes open for data and articles that might between distinguish the two - https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/ap... - somehow, if this hypothesis has merit

May come to Open Band tomorrow after all, having received the music last night - contingent up further reading of this infodemic. Hoping to see some of you there! :)

Am wondering if there's an opportunity here with MIT banning events with 150 or more people, for World Univ & Sch to develop collaboration, even, with MIT lectures in Cambridge that top 150 people - and regarding this up-to-250-people in Google Meet, and for WUaS to collaborate further with MIT engineers in related remarkable ways in these regards. For related questions, I can make people WUaS admins in Google Meet, as well as give people WUaS email addresses from Google Education, all of which could be useful to people in different ways, and will share this information with everyone in this thread. I need to look further into (your) what "they mean by live streaming? ... Or does it mean you can use Hangout Meet directly for streaming? It would be interesting to find out. If it was the case you could even get rid of Lightstream AND have the increased capacity of up to 250 participants in a video call. Wow!!!!"

Um 7.30 Uhr beginnt mein erster Arbeitstag nach der Isolation. Heute mit dabei: die Maske und ein von mir unterschriebenes Formular, auf dem ich bestÃ¤tige, dass ich Shanghai in den vergangenen 14 Tagen nicht verlassen sowie keine infizierten Personen getroffen habe und selbst gesund bin. Da diese Formulare immer eine Passnummer erfordern, muss der Reisepass auch mit. Bei der Ausfahrt aus dem Wohnkomplex, in dem ich lebe, bekomme ich einen Tagespass, den ich wieder abgebe, wenn ich abends hineinmÃ¶chte. So behÃ¤lt die Hausverwaltung den Ãberblick, wer gerade nach Shanghai zurÃ¼ckkommt und sich registrieren muss.

Die BÃ¼roetage ist grÃ¶Ãtenteils leer und kalt. Man freut sich herzlich, endlich die Kollegen wiederzusehen, die nicht isoliert sind. NatÃ¼rlich ohne KÃ¶rperkontakt und mit respektablem Abstand. Auf dem Schreibtisch liegt meine Wochenration an Masken bereit. Nach Feierabend geht es wieder in Rekordzeit zurÃ¼ck nach Hause. Vorbei an geschlossenen GeschÃ¤ften und Restaurants. Ich bin zwar nicht mehr isoliert, doch es dÃ¤mmert mir, dass der Unterschied im Alltag nur formeller Natur sein wird. ZurÃ¼ck im Haus, bin ich wieder alleine. Meine Frau und unsere Kinder sind noch in Deutschland. Zahlreiche Nachbarn ebenso.

Die viruseindÃ¤mmenden MaÃnahmen in Shanghai werden an den folgenden Tagen entgegen meinen Erwartungen noch verschÃ¤rft. JÃ¼ngste Vorkehrung.

Um 7:30 start my first business day after isolation. Today with me: the mask and a form signed by me, on which I confirm that I have not left Shanghai in the past 14 days, that I have not met any infected people and that I am healthy myself. As these forms always require a passport number, the passport must also be included. When I leave the residential complex in which I live, I get a day pass, which I hand in again if I want to go in at night. This way, the property management keeps track of who has just returned to Shanghai and has to register.

The office floor is mostly empty and cold. We are looking forward to finally seeing our colleagues who are not isolated. Of course without physical contact and with a respectable distance. Am glad he touches on Universal Basic Income (experiments?) but am wondering how long into the future Piketty (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Piketty) is envisioning this for nation states, especially regarding developments in aging reversal / longevity - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/longevity. Not very much analysis of the significance of the internet here whatsoever, although am wondering whether his parents could have known Manuel Castells in 1968 in Paris.

As a prospective undergraduate English major at MIT OCW-centric World University and School this autumn 2020 (since WUaS wasn't able to make courses available for credit this past January per your expressed interest and inquiries), these WUaS 4 year (licensing and accrediting) degrees would explicitly not involve traveling to the US to start your degree. (If you decided, for example, after 4 years and receiving your degree, to apply to and matriculate in the online WUaS Medical School, this might involve some travel outside India, but not necessarily to the US - e.g. brainstorming-wise, in academic Toyota Teaching Hospital Vans as medical schools with tele-robotic molecular surgery, and robotic CRISPR gene editing technologies).

I'd like to introduce you as well here to not only Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX, and MIT Prof of EECS, but also to Nimisha Asthagiri, edXâs Chief Architect - https://blog.edx.org/edx-insider-meet... - who also has a MIT BS degree in Engineering (EECS) from 1997.
