Netherlands' World University and School, not yet in the Dutch language ...

Hi Nanette,

What are you doing with music these days? And do you ever find your to playing your Oboe?

Playing music toward my first Scottish Small Pipes' album presently, and both giving and taking piping lessons in Skype in the process.

Warm regards,
Scott
- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/western-honey-bee-re-my-upcoming-honey.html (in the 'bagpiping' label). Did you ever make any recordings, either solo or with an orchestra?

Hi Nanette,

Glad to hear you're all well. Teams looks interesting, as does MS's related OneNote, It seems robust and well thought out, but one still can't draw pictures easily on a computer screen with a stylus for note-taking and art-making! MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch is in Google for Education, and am interested what might emerge here too with regards to Google Meet, and Teams' Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity. Hopefully you and your family will be able to go hiking from home - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForHiking?src=hashtag_click - in 1  #RealisticVirtualEarth and even visit virtual Harbin - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1232786005675012097?s=20. Beautiful Canyon 94516, in a forest, where I live (which I don't think you got a chance to visit :( is pretty nice while sheltering at home presently). Continuing to seek a partner to begin a family here ... :) To be seen! Playing music toward my first Scottish Small Pipes' album these days, in addition to developing World Univ (eventually in Dutch and re The Netherlands!) ... would like to be soaking more at virtual Harbin, as well as taking an occasionally Yoga course with Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten in Greece, but I'm pretty well otherwise. How are you, Nanette? Wishing you all the best in this strange time re genetics.

Warm regards, Scott (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/genes?m=0 with nearly 35 recent blog posts about the coronavirus pandemic).

PS :) Very glad to hear your  walks in the forest nearby and Reading books in the sun. Warmly, Scott

Hi Scott, yes we’re busy teaching and learning online. Our boys are following their weekly schedule of lessons, now at Teams. I am making instruction video’s for my own class and talking daily with them at Teams. Coming 2 weeks we have a holiday, but indeed: nowhere to go but at home. Weather is good, so taking walks in the forest nearby and Reading books in the sun.
How are you? How is life in California?

Bagpiping - Scottish Small Piping - Playing, and Learning

Well, Ma,

How are you?

I have begun playing today early, beginning around 11:30 am, and with an effective focus, I think -
practicing with inspiration - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm

(which is the very first idea here, and which I had never thought of in terms of listening to Stuart Liddell on Youtube, or in any other specific way; and here again is the amazing - "Stuart Liddell - Lunchtime Recital 2010: 4 of 8" ...

https://youtu.be/e7zvKbl1R54 )

-  per Stuart Liddell, and then 2 first Hornpipes nearly up to speed, with metronome, and toward my Honey in the Bag Scottish Small Pipes' album ... Am observing all this psychologically as well, in terms of learning. :)

Will likely play a bit more soon! How's your day going?

Love, Scott

Hi Ma,

How's your day going and how are you?

More on music-making, and learning: I had tuned each of the 2 drones separately with electronic tuner, earlier, corking the chanter and one drone, and then using the tuner for the other drone, and then for the chanter, taping both of the drones. Everything was tuned nicely to A (it's so nice to be able to play in concert A:), although I had to blow more softly with the bellows than otherwise for tuning the sound of each tube, since the other tubes were corked. My SSP were nicely tuned. But then when I played through some tunes with metronome, I observed at the end of playing 2 tunes that I was blowing a little too hard, and that had lead to a waver (meaning they were a little out of tune) again ... It's good learning with electronic metronome / tuner ... and after which I turned back to listening to Stuart LIddell for further inspiration. And soon I'll head back to recordings of all 4 lessons with Connor Sinclair for further specific learning regarding my playing and his teaching.
What are you up to this weekend?
L, ScottI explore this and much more here today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/boreray-st-kilda-sheep-are-you-teaching.html :)

In Kerala, India:
(in a Google Hangout)

Feb 6, 2017
Hi Prem! Developing wiki World University and School - :-)::-) where anyone can edit and thereby teach or lran - and eventually in your languages and any language. How are you?
http://worlduniversityandschool.org/
Where are you in India too?

*

I am in INdia Kerala

the university

*
Hello in Kerala (which I've visited). Here's the beginning CC India World University and School http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki... with its CC MIT OpenCourseWare planned in Hindi and languages in Kerala too, each a wiki school which you can edit for open teaching and learning (before we move to a new wiki emerging from Wikidata/Wikipedia (and its 358 wiki languages) ... See too for example ...http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki...

*

pl. make it clear scott. what you r expecting from me

*
I opend the site
and got no clesr idea

*
Hi Prem, Greetings from the American Friends Service Committee / San Francisco Quaker Meeting - have you ever edited a Wikipedia article in English, Hindi or Malayalam for example? On the open Wiki school side, World University is like this.
On the free, CC OCW degree side, you'll be able to study for a free university degree at World University, and eventually not only in English but probably in Hindi too.
Because WUaS is wiki, you can start teaching right now - pick or ADD a wiki subject to World University about something you love - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki... - and teach to your web camera, for example. Read through some of the subjects here, and what appeals to you?
What do you do? (Please remember WUaS is moving to a better wiki soon,  with a database to support it).

*
I am Qualified in Theology and Journalism. Now I am running a media firm in Cochin / India

*
Great, Prem - while WUaS hasn't begun yet a Malayalam language wiki subject/school (or ones in other languages from Kerala), here's the Hindi language WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki... - as an example of where WUaS is heading, but not yet in Hindi. Looking forward to staying in communication.

*
Do you have any plan to start in Malayalam. please let me know. Another thing is I want to know more about WUaS. Apart from the website please give me more information in terms of What is ? How it function? Is it a online college? or is it a supportive hand for all universites around the globe? I have so many questions?
Please send a mail. premuesi@gmail.com
I have so many ideas to convey with you and if possible i can be associate with you in this huge project
pl let me know

*
Hi Prem, Just noticed now your email from February ... sorry I didn't notice it before ...

How can I work for your your projrct
I have an idea that will change the whole world of wiki pedia

*
March 2017
Prem,

Good to know of your interest in Malayalam language World University and School, which is wiki and CC MIT OpenCourseWare-centric ...

Here's Hindi language WUaS (planned in Hindi) ...
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki...
... check out the MIT OCW ... Malayalam language will resemble this ... in the Malayalam language.

And here's India WUaS ... planned in each of all 22 official languages in India, potentially as  online universities ...

Sounds good. There's a waver in the tuning of the Scottish Small Pipes when I have one drone going and am playing an E on the chanter (I noticed recently). Getting each of the 3 tuned independently to A with the tuner, is a step in the right direction. Bellow blowing differs between High A and Low A too, but tuning to the tuner can help one get there to a tuned set of bagpipes, as one learns to hear them (and the waver or no waver on the A :).

Stuart Liddell's fingers are so independent from each other, and he plays so 'sure footedly' (like a Boreray Ram??, and am wondering if this is a Boreray Ram horn -

to ConnorRoddyAndrewScottHi Connor, Roddy, and Andrew,

Greetings. I realize the National Piping Centre is closed, but I'm writing to you sheltering-at-home (due to the coronavirus pandemic) with the following idea which just came to me.
After re-visiting a lesson recording from 3/10/20 with Connor (there is / used to be a GHB Sinclair chanter :) yesterday evening, and your mentioning your growing up listening to the Pipers of Distinction GHB Series - https://lightlink.com/siusaidh/musicd.html (and below) - in which you Roddy, Principal of the NPC, are one of the soloists on CD, I wonder about inquiring if I could explore creating another album in this series. It's possible you, Roddy, or Finlay MacDonald (or you, Connor or Andrew) know the series' producer, for example. What would be the steps for this, if you have some thoughts in these regards?
Creating an album is a good further focus for learning and improving my piping in a variety of ways. And working with you 3 National Piping Centre pipers would help focus my "Honey in the Bag" Scottish Small Pipes' album in even new good ways regarding an album in such a series. And could such a Pipers of Distinction Series even do promotion and distribution? (I've been wondering about this, - for example, if I were to do the whole album on my own). And such a series would also offer a kind of structure, very different from my going forward with this SSP album solo / alone. And Series like this could benefit from growth, and new albums (as products or a good even).
Could it be listed like (from below:):
Piper of Distinction

Walking, dancing or moving 2 miles per day, during this time of coronavirus pandemic?

Hi Ma,Am appreciating our communication in general - and also about movement and walking. If many people walk 3 miles per hour on average, 2 miles would take 40 minutes. Down & back to the Canyon P.O. 94516 is 1.2 miles, and my other 2 walks here, also involving big hills, are similar / a little bit less - so time to double my daily walk + ! ;) (and add in a little invigorating Angela & Victor inspired Yoga too ... for a revolutionary 45 minutes per day?:)L, Scott

*
And or 45 minutes of dancing at home to music that dances me :) am going to begin creating some sets of youtube videos of such music !L, Scott

Hi Ma,

There aren't really midges, no-see-ems or many mosquitoes even around here, which is quite nice, and the temperature will be around 70 F in afternoons for the upcoming week :) ... And here below is a bit of a re-write of my earlier email. I want too to be able to share Google Maps with you with the route I walked penciled in, for example, but in a brief search didn't see how to do this. Here's Ridgecrest Road and Redwood Hwy Canyon 94516 where i live https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ridgecrest+%26+Redwood+Hwy,+Canyon,+CA+94516/@37.8328741,-122.164702,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x808f881297fc8633:0x5989dabaac0c7fdd!8m2!3d37.8328699!4d-122.162508 without much maps greenery and I can't easily show you where I went ... Just Tweeted (and also re-Tweeted) about this question to someone in Maine - see below.

So again:

No see 'em Trillium out on a new long walk just now.

I went down into 'Indian Valley' to the east, and from the bottom, then a new way, walking all the way up north to the very top rim of this valley. I then hopped the locked fence which has a "fire road" sign posted on it (and is probably used  to keep any recreational vehicles from making a big loop in this cattle grazing land) and I was soon back where I've quite a few times at a saddle looking in many directions, and near the rusty basin and potential warm pool to be (for hippy types) and which nascent robots will help prepare. It took a little more than 30 minutes, and I rested under a nice tree, then walked back about 5-7 minutes to where I live. I then brought in some quickly-dried laundry from the line, - and so was out of doors, with laundry hanging too, for about an hour. So I probably walked for 35 minutes or probably nearly 2 miles.

No trillium sitings, but I'm beginning to identify a few species of flowers. I did plant my 3 herb starts (parsley finally, oregano and sage), - and got a large flower pot of lettuce for when I run out of salad lettuce I get at store - while sheltering at home during this coronavirus Covid-19 'national emergency' and 'state emergency' too.

How was your day, and what did you see?

L, Scott

PS
Hi Richard @rmbyrne How please to draw in and share on Google Maps with a friend the route I walked cross-country? A while ago you Tweeted how to add measurements in Maps to a ski slope, but I'm not finding this now, & idea here is similar ~ #RealisticVirtualEarth Ideas? Thanks!

L, Scott

[Wikimedia-l] Proposal towards a multilingual Wikipedia and a new Wikipedia project

Hi Denny, Markus, and Wikimedians / Wikidatans,

Thanks so much for this momentous next step in Wikipedia & Wikidata's ~300 languages, and for this great overview "Keynote by Denny Vrandečić at SWAT4HCLS 2019" HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY, EDINBURGH CAMPUSKeynote by Denny Vrandečić at SWAT4HCLS 2019https://youtu.be/yzVA7YLwhTE  & thanks too for mentioning the evolution of Wikipedia's medical content (at 21 mins.) & the genetics' focus re GeneDB (at 22:30 ). Appreciating also your approach to Wikidata to Wikipedia in ~300 languages regarding the Constructors, Content, Renderers' approach (from 34 mins to 39 mins).
Looks like Wikipedia is developing the next big multilingual step, - and for the 146 languages in Wikipedia with less than 10 editors in their communities (at 42 mins) out of its 300 languages.
Thank you so much Wikidata founder (now at Google) Denny Vrandečić !
Best regards, ScottPS. Am staying tuned for CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch's planned online medical schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School - and online teaching hospitals - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Hospital - planned in each of all ~200 nation states' official and main languages, for the practice of online medicine. (CC-4 WUaS donated itself to Wikidata in 2015 for co-development, and received the WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017, but they're not yet interoperable).

[Wikimedia-l] Proposal towards a multilingual Wikipedia and a new Wikipedia project

As some of you know, I have been working on the idea of a multilingual
Wikipedia for a few years now. Two other publications on this are here, I
have bothered you with mails about it here previously too:

https://research.google/pubs/pub48057/

https://wikipedia20.pubpub.org/pub/vyf7ksah

I've also been giving talks about the topic in several places about this
idea, some of them have also been recorded:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzVA7YLwhTE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLiJ6E9sG6U&list=PLQVG_tuf3Q2fji-CwqEDRJpZuf23wevrq&index=13

I gathered some awesome feedback in those few years (also from some members
of this list, thank you!), and I also implemented a few prototypes trying
out the idea, learning a lot from that.

All of this has helped to sharpen the idea and come up with a more concrete
proposal. In short, the proposal is that we do a two-step approach: first,
allow for capturing Wikipedia content in an abstract notation, and second,
allow for creating functions that translate this abstract notation into
natural language (For simplicity, I gave this two steps names, Abstract
Wikipedia for step 1, and Wikilambda for step 2. I realize that both names
are not perfect, but that is just one of the many things that we can figure
out together on the way).

I wrote up this proposal in a paper, which I uploaded to my Website almost
two weeks ago, and I also submitted it to Arxiv. And as soon as it was
published on Arxiv, I wanted to share it with you and see what you folks
think (I wanted to wait for it as Arxiv would allow the URLs to remains
table - my Website has gone down before and might so again).

https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.04733

The new proposal is much more concrete than the previous proposals (and
therefore there is much more to criticize). Also, obviously, nothing of
this is set in stone, and just like the names, I am very much looking
forward to hear suggestions for how to improve the whole thing, and I will
blatantly steal every good idea and proposal. I am not even sure what a
good venue for this discussion is, I guess, eventually it should be on
Meta?, but also about that I would like to hear proposals.

Abstract Wikipedia is a proposed extension to Wikidata that would capture
the content next to the Wikidata items. Think of it as a new namespace,
where we could create, maintain, and collaborate on the abstract content.
Similar to the Wikidata-bridge, there should be a way to allow
contributions from the Wikipedias to flow back without too much friction.
The individual Wikipedias - and I cannot stress this enough - have the
choice to use some or any or all or none of the content from Abstract
Wikipedia, but I most definitely do not expect the content of the current
Wikipedias to be replaced by this. In fact, I have no doubt that any decent
article in any language Wikipedia will remain superior to the outcome of
the proposed new architecture by far. This is a proposal for the places
where the current system left us with gaps, not a proposal to turn the
parts that are already brilliant today dull and terrible tomorrow.

Wikilambda is a proposed new Wikimedia project that allows us to share in a
new form of knowledge assets, functions. You can think of it as similar to
Modules or Templates, but a bit extended, with places for tests, different
languages, evaluation, and also for all kind of functions, not only those
that are immediately useful for one of the Wikimedia projects, and most
importantly, shared among the projects. So one of the first goals would be
to increasingly allow fo a place to have global templates, another idea
that has been discussed and asked for for a very long time. Wikilambda,
just as Wikidata, is expected to start as a project supporting the
immediate needs of the sister projects, and over time to grow to a project
that stands on its own merits as well.

We don't really have an effective process for starting new projects, so I
am trying to follow a similar path that we took for Wikidata back then. And
back then it all started with Markus Krötzsch, me and others talking about
the idea to anyone who would listen until everyone was bored of hearing it,
trying out prototypes, and then talking about it even more, and improving
all of it constantly based on your feedback. And then making increasingly
concrete proposals until we managed to show some kind of consensus from the
communities, you, and the Foundation to actually do it. And then, well, do
it.

So, I've done some of the talking, with researchers, with the public, with
some of you, and also with folks at the Foundation, to figure out what next
steps could be, and how this can be made to work. Here's a more concrete
proposal. Now I am here to see whether we can find consensus and be bold. I
want to hear from you. I want to hear what you think what the right place
is to discuss this (here, this list? Another mailing list? Meta? Wikidata?
Some Telegram or Facebook group? (OK, I was joking about the latter)).
Which parts of the proposal are good and which need improvement? Where is
more detail or clarification needed to allow for a meaningful discussion?

Just as with Wikipedia and Wikidata and our other projects, this is a crazy
idea at first. Maybe even more crazy than our other projects. And the only
way there is a chance of us being successful is, if, eventually, thousands
of us work together on it. The only way this worked in the past is by being
open, start out collaboratively, discuss the path forward, and work towards
creating the project together.

Stay safe,
Denny

Thanks, Connor, Roddy and Andrew, And Finlay

Thanks for your email. I've removed you from this email thread, Finlay. (Am waiting to see how NPC lesson developments work out, Connor).

Inspired also by the great piper PM Stuart Liddell, and thinking of creating PHYSICAL albums after my first upcoming "Honey in the Bag" SSP album, I see that Stuart doesn't list many web recordings - http://www.stuartliddell.com/about - WITH just something on the Web here from 2016 - http://www.stuartliddell.com/music. With my significant focus on the virtual or the digital (I teach a course about the I.T. revolution - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html) ... I still see a place for the physical, like a CD, ahead ... and especially in countries like Scotland and all around the world (where the SF Bay Area might think in terms of a musical recording online only, for example) ... since I think the 1) virtual/digital and 2) the physical will continue to play a significant role in music recordings into the future - but in what ways newly? ... There's an emergent opportunity for defining this (and even brainstorming-wise in the WUaS Press - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress/status/1249451894725959680?s=20, for example, and with blockchain ledger etc).

Thank you.

All the best, Scott

Hi Ma,

Will keep my eyes open for Pacific trillium when I head out soon for walk ...  did you see any trillium today?

Good conversation with Petros Kalligas near Athens, Greece, for an hour yesterday re World Univ & Sch ... how was your day?

Am waiting for a call back tomorrow from Kim at state of California's / county's health care options' dept. saying I'm back in Kaiser ...

Lesson tomorrow or next week is another possibly related question ... may begin daily playing earlier than 10 or 10:30 today (am seeking to understand this psychology :)

Hope you have a good week ... if this is all a Covid-19 'fire drill,' to some extent, when can we start becoming social per Denmark and Norway again - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1247324560942182402?s=20 (and below) - or is a little further 'coronavirus work' still ahead in the USA, differently than in those countries, (their languages) and cultures - and exposure too to (SARS CoV2)?

Amazing too for my big project -

"Already, universities are planning for a fall without students on campus — just in case"

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/04/13/metro/already-universities-are-planning-fall-without-students-campus-just-case/ and is an in depth article. (Am able to see this behind the pay wall in the Tor browser). I wonder if the President of Brown, Christina Paxson, mentioned here is related to the MIT Professor of Anthropology, Heather Paxson whom I think grew up as a Quaker, having gone to Haverford as undergraduate, and Stanford for PhD. Not sure - bu Christina Paxson did go to Swarthmore, and grew up near Pittsburgh, interestingly.

Good morning, Ma,

How's your day going, and what does getting out hold for you? How are you doing, and what are you thinking re where you live about developing practices for living together in a time of heightened genetic-transmission-risk awareness?

Am curious when Wikipedia in many languages and, say, all the trillium species' pages with their pictures and text in Wikipedia could be used to, or will inform, a realistic virtual earth for 'keying' (logical step by step process of identification) flowering plants, so called angiosperms, and almost newly automatically with our smart phones.

Could all of these images to be used to compare with actual flowers be stored / organized in a multi-dimensional SINGLE realistic virtual earth?

Related beginnings (which I began) and in which there are already many Tweets -

Realistic Virtual Earth for Species -

Looks like Wikipedia thanks to Wikidata founder (now at Google) Denny Vrandecic is developing a next big multi-lingual step with A.I. for 146 language communities of its 300 languages (with far-reaching implications for my big project).

Connection with a partner / wife ... ? ... am waiting ... on nature partly ... and potentially Cuttyhunk 'culture' as well ... Desiderata-wise too

Got something in my left eye in middle of night - need to get it out now. I'd like for it to migrate out to the lid's edge, where I could remove it, but it hasn't yet. Just looked briefly and couldn't see it ...

Hoping to hear back from the county that I'm back in Kaiser today with a return phone call from Kim ...

Inspired too by the great piper PM Stuart Liddell, and thinking of creating PHYSICAL albums after my first upcoming "Honey in the Bag" SSP album, I see that Stuart doesn't list many web recordings - http://www.stuartliddell.com/about - WITH just something here from 2016 - http://www.stuartliddell.com/music . HI Ann, Ma, Alden, Sandy, Cathy and Steve,

I was able to dredge up Annie Brown's OregonTrail.net email address and add it above (a different kind of Oregon Trail :). I don't think it works any longer - does it Ann? :)

Looks like the Oregon Trail in one sense was over by 1840, as a footpath, but wagon trails started about then apparently, and then the first intercontinental railway was completed in 1869 - and wagons did stop at The Dalles, and board ships on the Columbia River from there probably for quite a while in here, I'd hazard.

"The Oregon Trail was laid by fur traders and trappers from about 1811 to 1840, and was only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Trail ... :)

Would love to explore the Oregon Trail in The Dalles in a realistic virtual earth for history (am thinking Google Street View with time slider, avatar bots we can talk with - and in the back of our glacier glasses :)

Peter B, am thinking that it might be logical to stream to the new WUaS Livestream channel you helped create. So it might be great to stream to the second WUaS Livestream channel below, or connect the two even - and for next week, when Petros and I are seeking to explore doing another outreach Livestream (for which we did a test run today). Am thinking, Peter, that it might have made sense, re PS below, for me to log into the new LiveStream email account for today. What do you think?

Hi Ma,

Nice to talk! And thanks for letting me know about Trilliums around you. (I learned a bit).
It looks like nodding Trillium is Trillium cernuumhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trillium_cernuum
And here's a disambiguation from drooping Trillium -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nodding_trillium_(disambiguation)
And here's a list of most of the Trilliums - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trillium

Thank you, Scott.  I think you found it.  Much more helpful than my two wildflower guides.  In the morning I’ll try to send you the photo of the one I took today.  See if you think it’s the same.  It was interesting to note there is a Pacific trillium that I’d never heard of.

Love,

hi Ma,
Nice to talk ...
Appreciating ...
https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html ... in ongoing way, for its thinking ... & re 'Go placidly ...' ... I see on Google Smart TV a number of pictures of pairs of a species (eg dolphins, fulmars, penguins, two primate monkeys with different color fur looking each other in the eye, as if communicating, and potentially in Africa, etc.) and individuals too (a sea turtle swimming under water, a number of other amazing underwater pictures re swimming even, & a whale doing a back flip) which display regularly ... and appreciate how many life forms come remarkably through time in such interesting habitats. And when will this knowledge thru pictures become interactive knowledge in an immersive realistic virtual earth virtual world, akin to the thinking-wisdom in the Desiderata, esp. if we live as long as Bristlecone pines or Koi fish?
Learning from nature and media ... and knowledge too.
...
Nodding trillium ... what are you up to this week?
Love, Scott
PS
Connor emailed saying he has a way to accept payment now for private piping lessons, but that blocks of lessons would be available thru the NPC when it reopens, and I have 1 remaining in first block of 10. Seeking to play more daily, than my current daily playing. (Would I have liked to have known about this NPC change or policy when I first signed up for 10 lessons last summer, and initially with Finlay? I think I was aiming to begin lessons without thinking what comes after. Am appreciating Connor's playing and instruction).

Am appreciative too of Guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument about seeking out private lessons - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - as code too.
And am appreciating the Desiderata about career - of which piping is an element for me of my career in a way.
Beyond bagpiping ... on to further dolphin play, metaphorically, and practices for eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology -  http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm - which I'm just re-visiting exploring ... :)

very nice version of St. John's Passion by JS Bach ...

Hi Ma,
Happy Easter. Am enjoying this Johannes-Passion much -MILTON ABBEY CHURCH
VOCES8: Johannes-Passion, BWV 245 - JS Bachhttps://youtu.be/KrG5TMjEHMM

Regarding - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/leptopoma-snail-johannes-passion-by-js.html - I also found this warm and positive Kim Stafford video on Haiku in the Gorge, and may send it to Annie. It's germane with regard to my first book of poetry "Haiku~ish" - "Haiku~ish: and Other, Loving, Hippy, Harbin Poetry"
https://www.amazon.com/Haiku-ish-Other-Loving-Harbin-Poetry/dp/0692049037
 - as well. I wonder too if she knows of Kim.

Kim Stafford on Haiku in the Columbia River Gorge
"Oregon Poet Laureate Kim Stafford on Haiku"
https://youtu.be/c3uJ_MEqPAQ

And Kim Stafford was a conscientious objector in the 1970s (as was I in a way), and in the Church of the Brethren interview - https://youtu.be/0GEEkan_uRk (Brethren Community Television) - he describes himself as a 'wild child' in the '60s and '70s, at about the 12 minute mark - which I take as a reference to being a hippy. Good to hear.

I think it was in an Oregonian newspaper article from yesterday even that I learned of Kim Stafford, but I can't find it now. And this "Poems for the Pandemic"  - https://projects.oregonlive.com/kim-s... - isn't it, albeit it's interesting that Kim Stafford is writing Coronavirus pandemic poems, and in the Oregonian. Am appreciating too the image of a poet I'm seeing and hearing, - as well as learning of a kind of pacifist alternative progressive western history of him and his father. I don't hear this history all that much these days.

And here's an interesting talk by his father, also a Lewis & Clark Professor in Portland, OR -

"William Stafford - You must revise your life"
https://youtu.be/norNi7k8GYo
Both father and son seek to make writing poetry accessible, and not formidable! Great :)

Some interesting articles regarding some of what we've communicated about:

And here's a Covid-19 dashboard - https://sites.google.com/view/covid19-dashboard/ and from Google and Wikipedia (in ~300 languages)! And could this become the bases for avatar bot electronic medical records for all 7.5 billion people (and re my World University and School's online medical schools and teaching hospitals in all ~200 countries, and in all 7,117 living languages!!!)? ... You at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University ... Have you seen that Google and Apple are talking about developing an App for contact-tracing? These are huge generally progressive companies, I'd say ... It could be amazing to help all 7.5 billion people with online electronic medical records.

Hi Scott,

Some of the most wonderful music was created for the church.  I’m listening to Bach’s St. John passion on WQED.  I’ve heard it live a couple of times - most recently at Calvary Church in Pittsburgh.  This airing is by Resonance Works, a small group in Pittsburgh - and they are doing a wonderful job.

Thank goodness some of this music is available via modern technology.

It’s very cold here - hope it doesn’t go down to freezing tonight because a lot of the flowering trees are just about to bloom.

Hope you had a good safe day and trust you were able to get in a good walk.

I’m trying to read ‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison.  The black dialect is almost indecipherable to me.  But she sure can write.  We’re going to read 'Song of Solomon', one of her other books for our  Book Group gathering via Zoom in May.

Love,

Ma

Hi Ma,

Just listening to this 'Johannes Passion' - https://youtu.be/SQl4BD6TS5w - by JS Bach. It's a very beautiful piece of music. Thanks so much for mentioning this!

We read Toni Morrison's 'Song of Solomon' (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/06/rest-toni-morrison-you-were-magnificent-leading-writers) at Reed College around 1981 - she's one of the most moving writers I know of ... where moving literature can be a great or wonderful motivation in reading English literature, and black American literature! Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' too! Enjoy! (And check out Zora Neale Hurston's 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' re moving ... and which describes someone getting bit by a rabid animal - raccoon, I think - fascinatingly ... and may have explored questions of Voo Doo too ... and re its biochemistry from a substance in a sea urchin - may have read about this later???...The action in 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' all takes place in Florida ... a possibility for your book group too? Zora Neale Hurston was also an anthropologist / folklorist - as am I an anthropologist and a would be folklorist too ... and Zora was involved in the Harlem Renaissance in NY too in the 1920s, I think). :)

As I write the above an image appears on my Google Smart TV of a pool of water in a creek with mossy dark stones that could conceivably be on Harbin Hot Springs' property, but am pretty sure it isn't. Makes me want to get on with my next Harbin ethnographic book project, this one both actual and virtual, physical and digital - and engaging the new social science method I'm developing - ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - but first my Scottish small pipes' album / CD (for the physical), "Honey in the Bag" ... as well as my next - 4th - book of poetry (https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity). (Would also like a new therapy for 'eustachian tube dysfunction' to have developed - perhaps from Boston scientists - and even re MIT Kevin Esvelt's 'sculpting evolution' - https://www.media.mit.edu/people/esvelt/overview/ . . . or Harvard's Jennifer Lewis's soft materials / robotics - https://robotics.harvard.edu/jennifer-lewis).

All on an Easter weekend! :) Happy Easter.

Love, Scott

HI Ma,

Good Saturday to you as well! :)

Just found edifying this:

" 'Rest, Toni Morrison. You were magnificent': leading writers on the great American author"
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/06/rest-toni-morrison-you-were-magnificent-leading-writers

And here she talks about her 1977 book:

"Toni Morrison : Song of Solomon"

https://youtu.be/RTAQHbLFi84

For your interest, and in a related vein -

"Zora Neale Hurston wroteTheir Eyes Were Watching Godin 1937 while in Haiti collecting folklore on Vodou. ... Most acknowledge Hurston's interest in Haitian Vodou, but their analyses of the impact of this belief system on her work frequently do not extend beyond perfunctory glosses."
https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv47w2rj

And since Toni Morrison's "Beloved" was published in 1987, I'll bet it will have been an expression of a yet more experienced writer.

Blogged about 'Johannes Passion' and Toni Morrison and Kim Stafford and much more today here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/04/leptopoma-snail-johannes-passion-by-js.html :)

Hi Ma,

I just stumbled upon the Oregon Poet Laureate, Kim Stafford, who's inspiring to me in these first 4 video beginnings, - and who's poetry I was able to get into, and feel an affinity for, right away ...

Kim Stafford has just become a kind of model for me, as a kind of activist, with roots in the Church of the Brethren, an historic peace church, as a Professor at Lewis and Clark college in Portland, Oregon, and in his presence in the media above. He also went to the University of Oregon in the late '60s and early '70s, and there are echoes of this (bits of hippiness) in his bearing, as well as in his poetry. I appreciate his connection with the land, his warmth, his vision ... echoes of the Browns in eastern Oregon ... and even re Oregon identity questions and culture for me. He also plays his guitar sometimes at readings - as folk singer with parallels to Pete Seeger. He also has an ear for Oregon sounds, Pacific NW native Americans. He has good communication skills.  He's taught poetry workshops or  "offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan" (https://graduate.lclark.edu/live/profiles/236-kim-stafford). His father was also a poet, I find interesting, and his biography is here - https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/william-e-stafford.

I searched on "Was poet Kim Stafford a hippy?" and didn't find anything. The self-identification as hippy, or the characterization of being a hippy by writers, social scientists, academics, writers is an interesting 'lack' I find. Why don't more people identify as hippies which they may have been in the 1960s and '70s, I ask myself in these regards, sometimes.
