Hi Lukas,
I just updated this blog entry - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/peak-district-bill-gates-and-steve-jobs.html - with your information.
Do you have a LinkedIn profile? (Mine is https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottgkmacleod/)
In the meantime, it's with regards to the idea of hikers and hillwalkers WIKI-contributing their own experiences in video and photos (via Google Glass Enterprise, for example) into something like Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth (with AllTrails) that could make all the hikes that 10 Adventures offers accessible by other people, including disabled people (and created in part, too, by your hikers). (I'm calling this process of wiki-adding to a virtual world ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, eg see https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/20... - and see the 'label' for this in my blog too). It would be great to communicate further about how some of this could work. It might be something 10 Adventures could even reach out to prospective hikers for your organized trips with - the opportunity via a kind of community service to help create the hikes you offer virtually. Hikers might love this, - and spread out all over the globe doing this (including esp. on 10 Adventures' trips).
Kind regards, Scott

to me
Hey Scott,
Thanks for getting back to me. So firstly, the Veggie Vegabonds isn't me :) I have had a chat with them some time ago, but those are two different entities on the web. Mine is 10Adventures.com. I use the .co email as I email a lot, and I use the .com one just for internal stuff mainly.
This is actually the link I was hoping you might want to have a look at https://www.10adventures.com/hikes/peak-district-national-park/. And I was hoping you might want to link to it. This would be a huge help to boost this region higher on Google.
As for your ideas, I do like the idea of being able to experience the whole trail in VR. Or just to walk it on the screen. I think it would help people who want to know what to expect. It might not be suitable for those who like surprises. My wife has a fear of exposure and sometimes we don't know if she can go on a hike as sometimes we read comments about exposure but we don't know how bad it is. So there's a risk to get stuck on trails that way. But, saying that, on 10Adventures, each route has been created by real people. That's actually what we are promoting. Instead of putting the routes together by looking at google or other maps, sitting at home, never doing them ourselves, the collaborators we found and the guys at 10Adventures personally have hiked these routes and recorded the GPS. So in a way, I think your idea is useful, but then it also allows everyone to appear as an expert for all the trails, without any real knowledge about the real deal.
An example is Alltrails.com. The route descriptions are autogenerated. And they rely completely on the comments of people who update the route information. But not all routes are popular or have even been walked by someone. this means, if you pick a route on that website, you rely on someone creating the route (possibly auto-creating the GPS too) and auto-created text about the terrain. This might not be the most reliable way of hiking, especially talking about the more difficult trails.
But, I do imagine your idea would be great. I imagine it would be awesome to have for each route, so people could do a test walk on their computer before choosing to do that trail.
Well, please let me know what you think about the Peak District guide. I would really appreciate it, and it would really help me a lot if you'd link to it. But I will fully understand if you are not interested.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Lukas

Hi, Lukas,
Thanks for your email. Is this you - https://veggievagabonds.com/yosemite-national-park-hiking-trails/? Photos in my daily blog posts are sometimes related to their content, sometimes not. Am happy to add a link to your guide to this blog post (but I don't think the post has that many readers). Please send the link and I'll add it.
With regard to your '10adventures.co' hillwalking project - https://www.10adventures.com/our-cont... - am curious what you're observing about virtual hiking or walking. Am seeking to facilitate a realistic virtual earth for everything including virtual hiking from home, for example, and with regards to, for example, Google Street View - https://twitter.com/rmbyrne/status/1232048856831078402?s=20. Will we be able to hike all 2650 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail or through the Peak District on an elliptical, and from home, in a digital mask? To be seen ... (Much of this emerges from my actual-virtual, physical digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gate here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ and "walk" down the road "4 miles" to Middletown, CA (accessible from https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~).
And will hikers be able to add to this developing realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth +) with something like Google Glass Enterprise (see below).
Regards, and cheers,
Scott

Hi Scott,
I am writing to you regarding your article "Peak District: Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were pretty good friends", which I have found here: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/peak-district-bill-gates-and-steve-jobs.html. I thought it's great.
In this article, you have mentioned The Peak District. I have actually written a detailed and accurate region guide about The Peak District, that I would love to show to you. I think it has all the information about each trail, thorough route guides, and even GPS coordinates anyone can download for free.
I was hoping you might be interested in seeing it. And I also wanted to ask, is there anything I could do that would make you consider linking to my guide about The Peak District?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Lukas

Hey Candace, (Alden, Dieter and Lukas/Mindaugas),
How are you, Candace? And where are you- and after all your perambulations? Am thinking further about virtual National Park hiking, or virtual hiking, and especially after further talking with Alden Smith ' 07 at a Thirsty Thursday in SF (thanks, too, to Dieter '01 above for convening this). Are you the head of the National Park Service, Candace '96, and based out of Death Valley NP, by any chance? :) ... or right up there at least :)
I just came across Maine-r Richard Byrne's "How to Measure Distance & Share Views in Google Earth" - https://youtu.be/zwDmWFOYc4o - on Twitter ... "Tour U.S. National Parks in Google Earth" - https://twitter.com/rmbyrne/status/1232048856831078402?s=20 (https://www.blog.google/products/earth/visit-us-national-parks-google-earth/ and http://edtechfitness.com/tour-u-s-national-parks-in-google-earth/) - and it made me wonder further about your and my conversation concerning virtual hiking in Death Valley NP, - and even for the benefits of movement on elliptical machines etc. from home. Alden had mentioned the word "effort" regarding what's involved in visiting places (re tourism), as we talked at the Reed College Thirsty Thursday, and I find this interesting since one definition of tourism per MacCannell, p.42, relates to "For the purposes of this paper, tourism can be defined as visiting marked sites, often involving travel, or more specifically, following offsite markers to onsite markers" - http://scottmacleod.com/anth250v.htm (and https://www.academia.edu/15259682/Gazing_at_the_Box_Tourism_in_the_Context_of_the_Internet_and_Globalization_Internetity_ ). So if one explores further, regarding a kind of social theory of tourism, the idea of effort as part of visiting places, and in lieu of traveling even, it seems possible to generate effort from home on elliptical machines. If one were viewing sites in a digital mask, or the back of one's glasses, I'd posit that this is a touristic experience as well. So how to generate such virtual touristic experiences further - and from the field?
And in what ways, Candace, might we explore hikers in Death Valley NP, and even with Google Glass Enterprise, with the TensorFlow chip (semiconductor) for images and working with Google TensorFlow AI software, while hiking and streaming video and images into Google Street View with time slider from the field? (Am currently emailing about this with 10 Adventures' Lukas Savella, originally from Lithuania, as well).
And in a related vein, brainstorming-wise, could we combine the above with keying flower species biologically with an App like this - in Death Valley NP:
Could this App that 'helps the visually impaired identify surroundings' with voice https://twitter.com/Paula_Piccard/status/1231771870514384896?s=20 be beginnings of 1 #RealisticVirtualEarth for DATA -& in recognizing hibiscus, labradors & pineapple & fruit, keying ALL 3-100mil. SPECIES #RealisticVirtualEarthForSpecies?

Alden,
Explored about "home movement," or "effort" to use your word, for example, when virtually travelling in Google Street View in a digital mask, in 2018, and regarding elliptical machines, treadmills etc here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/12/ceres-dwarf-planet-thanks-astroedlu-for.html - but am further interested in, as we talked, about particularly the researching meditation in the Harbin warm pool from home virtually.
More soon in an email to Candace.
Nice to meet and talk with you at the Reed Thirsty Thursday recently.

Hi Scott,
thank you for adding the link, I really appreciate it.
This is my Linkedin profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mindau/. Don't get confused by the name, I use Lukas as, sadly, more people reply to that than my original name. I have sent you an invite on Linkedin.
I start to see a clearer picture of what you meant. I do find your idea interesting.
Would you have a source with more explanation on that, so I could share it with the team? I would like to share this with my CEO and some contributors. I want to see if this is something that would interest us to participate in. As it's not entirely up to me to decide.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

This article just appeared yesterday in World Univ & Sch's daily Twitter Newsletter (via Paper.li), which I don't control or edit (and am not sure who or what chooses the daily article and photo+) -
Swedenâs Central Bank Finally Embraces DLT, But Only in Simulation Mode

I was able to create a Twitter post that connects this article with the WUaS Twitter newspaper here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1231786409683382273?s=20
I think Riksbank is Sweden's central bank: "The Riksbank is Sweden's central bank. We ensure that money retains its value and that payments can be made safely and efficiently. We also issue banknotes ... " per https://www.riksbank.se/en-gb/.
Am curious how WUaS Law Schools in all ~200 countries' official languages, and potentially in collaboration with Stanford Law CodeX and Law Pilot regarding its GDPR compliance courses could explore what's developing here - and in terms of courses, law schools, as well as WUaS plans for, brainstorming-wise, a Wikidata PIN # for each of all 7.5 billion people on the planet and regarding UBI experiments, partly to DISTRIBUTE a single digital currency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks (with the Euro in 19 out of 28 countries being a building block here).
Part of the question here is how might 'compliance courses for lawyers et al.,' regulating, hypothetically, the Pi cryptocurrency which is available "off the shelf" (from the Google Play Store) be regulated by the GDPR in the EuroZone ... and potentially regarding, Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), which are Blockchain ledger distributed systems, European Union currency law, and Law Pilot courses - and in WUaS Law Schools in each of all 28 EU countries - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School.
All the best, Scott
Am including an email below to the chair of the WUaS Board, Larry Viehland, which I sent last night regarding this and much more (and will blog about this tomorrow probably - and in the UBI label).

'In case of emergency (was: Electricity outage)' ...
this thread about a major earthquake in CA, or Coronavirus / COVID 19 or newly MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) or SARS (re genes)
MacLeod <sgkmacleod@gmail.com>1:03 PM (1 hour ago)

New thread here: 'In case of emergency (was: Electricity outage)' re numerous outages in Canyon 94516 ... but this thread could be about a major earthquake in CA, or Coronavirus / COVID 19 or newly MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV) or SARS (re genes) ...
Have been aggregating some information sources re Coronavirus / COVID 19, beginning here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/easter-island-chile-rapa-nui-report-all.html on Feb 12, 2020, where I think it begins data-wise around 23 Jan 2020.
Here's Kaiser Permanente's web page on this (which health care provider is in 8 US states) - https://healthy.kaiserpermanente.org/alerts/p1/2019-novel-coronavirus-feb-2020 - which points to the CDC - Center for Disease Control (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/index.html ) - for information.
Am wary of "Orientalism" (a kind of racism) in the representations of all this data, and here too - Coronavirus COVID-19 Global Cases by Johns Hopkins CSSE
... https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 (where it's big red circles presently center on Wuhan China, Italy, and Iran) - but am also appreciative of all these new amazing opportunities for access to information!
Just learned of a new Coronavirus:
'MERS coronavirus (MERS-CoV)
Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus'
from searching and finding this Google map -
https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?msa=0&hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=2&vpsrc=1&mid=15GjG9LJ3K4LTOcdYPuu2zjJoAPg&ll=29.482620294255913%2C132.57207391774304
(and this and SARS are all mentioned in the CDC website).
In German, here's a recent article on Coronavirus Covid-19 emerging in Italy:
https://www.fr.de/panorama/coronavirus-italien-riegelt-dutzend-staedte-zr-13533315.html (and as an alternative news' source, here are German national newspapers - https://www.deutschland.de/en/topic/knowledge/national-newspapers - https://translate.google.com/ - but search for information online in Google especially). And here's another article regarding Germany's health minister - https://www.faz.net/aktuell/wirtschaft/spahn-auch-deutsche-orte-koennten-abgeriegelt-werden-16649531.html - which suggests that quarantines could happen; and another regarding that the WHO wants the world to prepare for a Pandemic: https://www.welt.de/vermischtes/live205334991/Coronavirus-WHO-will-Welt-auf-moegliche-Pandemie-vorbereiten.html .
I also found the tone of this recent PBS NewsHour LIveStream responsible, informative and helpful:

Per this 1/12/20 blog entry again, am thinking / planning for avatar bot electronic medical records for all 7.5 billion people could help in this COVID-19 situation -
"Easter Island, Chile (Rapa Nui): . . . Genes . . . Report ALL cases of Coronavirus into a #RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics in #AvatarBotElectronicMedicalRecords planning for all 7.5 billion people on planet in all ~200 nation states' WUaS Univs & in a SINGLE #RealisticVirtualEarth - and in the ~200 online WUaS teaching hospitals ..."
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/easter-island-chile-rapa-nui-report-all.html - and per Harvard and MIT Professor of Genetics' George Church's recent Tweet (in blog post too) -

And about CA earthquake preparedness too?

I still think the risks of COVID-19 are place-specific, and from what I've read and heard are very very low, and was seeking a bell curve or graph of peak of deaths so far, but couldn't find this. This Johns Hopkins model suggests that 87,000 cases have been confirmed, 2,705 people have died thus far, and 28,000 people have recovered - https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 .

Hi, Ed, Byron, David, All,
I've also added these two emails to my blog post from yesterday, FYI - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/teak-24-feb-2020-world-univ-sch-q-and.html ...
I'm curious how George Church's 'molecular diagnostics' into electronic medical records would work, and as one approach to deal with the possibility of PREPARING for a global pandemic (and not just a US one) per:
@geochurch
Feb 11
https://link.medium.com/7zL63vauY3 Thanks Ed. Rapid response capabilities needed: molecular diagnostics, vaccines, neutralizing antibodies, and homes easily converted to off-the-grid full-recycling quarantine-biospheres. Not just for this epidemic, but the next one.
And if everyone on the planet had a potential Wikidata PIN # (like a Wikidata Q-item #) - all 7.5 billion people - in what ways could health workers orchestrate response capabilities in all ~200 countries and their official/main languages (and per https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages)? Build out even of the KP system?
Thoughts, questions, observations?

Good morning, Ma,
Questions are implicit in all articles in the News. Berlin Newspaper - Germanyhttps://www.berliner-zeitung.de
And in the US,The Boston Globe - USAhttps://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/02/07/lifestyle/could-bostons-tourism-industry-become-victim-coronavirus/
Other countries' newspapers' too. Am not heading too often yet to the online PBS NewsHour TV show (your News of choice, I think) - and which I think is also newly in a YouTube LiveStream - which I could see on both my smartphone and on my computer laptop screen, like all these digital newspapers.
Coronavirus tops the headlines in different ways. Glad I read German in these regards. And 'place' (one thesis in my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" book is that place informs culture - alternative culture or counterculture here) is newly significant online or Virtually or digitally as 'information' - and especially newly in conceiving of virtual Harbin. (I have an ongoing inquiry about the Actual-Virtual, Physical-Digital in Harbin projects, and in general - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/virtual?m=0, see too the 'virtual Harbin' label).
Glad the web make possible a wide variety of News options - kinda amazing. (Above is all in a social theory thinking vein too :)
How's your weekend going, and how are you? Thanks for this question email thread (and about Grandpa's Exeter tie too!).
Love, Scott

World Univ & Sch's Monday News & Q&A conversation OPEN to YOU and related developments with LightStream, Video Conferencing software and YouTube LiveStream
to Lydia, Larry, Denny, Edward, Juliette, Marian, nicoledgarrison26, Peter
Peter, (Lydia, Larry, Denny and All),
In reply to your email, and developments with LightStream, Video Conferencing software and YouTube LiveStream:
Thanks so SO much for all this helpful current VIDEO CONFERENCING information, Peter. Will stay with LIghtStream for Monday's WUaS News and Q&A with LiveStream -
(for example:
"Aging Reversal, a FIRST Artificial Intelligence Univ? - World Univ & Sch 10 Feb 2020 Q & A and News"
https://youtu.be/aq7iRi9YtyU)
https://www.youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch - for the time being, and potentially for real time CONVERSATIONS. Inviting one guest for an interview, for ex. - with new LIghtStream developments - could be ideal in a way anyway. May head to an OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) configuration eventually - https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/technical-explanation-of-obs-settings.642/ - for video conferencing directly in YouTube - but which will involve a kind of head of IT at WUaS I think.
In a related vein, hopefully a WUaS-edX (founded by Harvard and MIT) collaboration will emerge, and with it a NEW group video conferencing option with academic focus too, and for the Conference Method of Teaching and Learning - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning - and potentially too for a required first year Humanities' 101 (Reed College-informed) undergraduate class. Still seeking ~500 German Abitur and other German high-achieving (WUaS is open) students for (beginning) this autumn in English free-to-students' online Bachelor's degrees based on MIT OCW (https://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm). This would occur potentially via the MITx platform in edX since there are already 205 MIT OCW courses in MITx - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mitx-related-courseware/ and https://ocw.mit.edu/ocw-labs/opencourseware-bundles-for-edx/.
Have you checked out the Minutes from WUaS Monthly Business Meeting on 2/15 - https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity - beginning with "Eclectus Parrot: Minutes ..." -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/eclectus-parrot-minutes-for-sat-feb-15.html ?
(Your WUaS Logo is brilliant, by the way - thanks again, and hopefully WUaS will afford other related creative opportunities ahead. Glad too that http://worlduniversityandschool.org is now updatable with a secure port - and check out our WUaS video here too!).
Thoughts about seeking and matriculating ~500 German Abitur students for this autumn (and potentially in a Bachelor's degree class of about 2000 online students?) And thoughts about the very last Minute on the WUaS Corp/Press wing - about seeking 4 new Board members for this for profit general stock company?

Dick, Lucy, Ma, Alden, Searched on Howie Hawkins in "Democracy Now" and much Ralph Nader (whom I voted for as Green Presidential candidate too) comes up, as key thinker for the Green Party potentially too -

And in a now for something completely different vein, it looks like the first primary for the Green Party is in California - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Green_Party_presidential_primaries (but it's not entirely clear from this updatable Wikipedia article). And it's the big day of Nov 3rd that counts in this upcoming US presidential election here. (I continue to think that Biden has the best chances of winning on the Democratic side, and found it interesting that he Biden says he was arrested on the way to visit Nelson Mandela - could this mean 'stopped' by security forces at a check point during Apartheid, for ex.? - see, too https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/21/us/politics/biden-south-africa-arrest-mandela.html, and see, too - https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2013/06/17-inspiring-facts-about-nelson-mandela.html and "The 1970s: The Anti-Apartheid Movement's Difficult Decade. Some further thoughts about big November election ahead:

"Today, myself and co-authors @jimmykoppel and @djweitzner released a paper discussing a slew of vulnerabilities we found in @voatz, a blockchain voting app that's been used in US federal elections. You can read about it in the @nytimes !" -
https://twitter.com/mspecter/status/1227870800327462912?s=20
... It seems like similar MIT programmers could be significant in keeping the (ever growing in small ways) computing aspects of voting fair this autumn. I found this above Twitter post on Neha Narula's Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/neha - and she's the Director of the MIT Digital Currency Initiative (and wonder if this Mike Specter is any relation to Arlen Specter a PA US Senator in the 1980s, beginning his term 2 years after my father was Secretary of Health during the TMI nuclear meltdown catastrophe in 1979).
I looked up Andrew Yang's UBI - Universal Basic Income - recently too, just to see where he brought this conversation in the US presidential Democratic debates - and found the articles below. Seems like digital currencies with blockchain ledger could interrelate with other blockchain ledger systems (such as voting systems) - so am glad MIT and Harvard coders and law schools/centers, for example, are watching these developments.
One question I wonder about here is: if the poor in the US, and around the world, could be freed from poverty in the transition to a single digital currency in many of ~200 countries' official languages - with something off the shelf (off the Google Play Store shelf :) like the Pi cryptocurrency created by Stanford graduates, and with a lightning button for mining it with algorithms, then could that be something Biden, or Elizabeth Warren, could successfully run on?
* * * (And how too to navigate the 'hunters' in the US system too - the would be US assassins, and from both sides of the aisle, is another thing I wonder about, and which the US secret service seems to have had a fairly successful track record with since Kennedy, it seems). So how to keep them away from Pres T, and a possible Dem contender, a Vice Pres J.B. for example? * * *
I'm also curious how to prevent UBI experiments, to end poverty, getting eaten up - for ex. by ginormous health insurance cost rises, in the transition from ObamaCare to new payment approaches for maintaining enrollment in Kaiser Permanente health coverage - and in all ~200 countries around the world, and in their official languages.
What do you think in all these regards?

In seeking 500-2000 online for free-to-students' CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric degrees at World University and School as we begin licensing with the state of California's BPPE, WUaS seeks too to create an enormous number of high quality careers in all ~200 countries and 7,111 known living languages, and potentially about 2.2 million jobs in all ~200 countries' official languages.
2
WUaS may head to a CA BPPE licensing workshop on May 13, 2020 in Sacramento instead, since monies are now newly available to World University and School for state of California BPPE licensing (after first attending a CA BPPE workshop on 2/20/19 in San Jose, CA)!

World University and School's web site is now editable again, with secure FTP after being hacked a number of times in recent months, and has also re-added the following editable links, each planned in all ~200 countries' main languages:
Library Resources - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources
All libraries in all 7,111 known living languages as wiki pages (and also in Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, TensorFlow, Translate, etc.)

See too: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/panthera-stanford-law-school-codex-mtg.html (and with regards too to WUaS seeking to facilitate a single digital currency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks and distributed via Universal Basic Income experiments to all 7.5 billion people on planet - via You at WUaS https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - and for alleviating poverty; see too the WUaS Corp below).
6
Regarding 'You at WUaS' and Universal Basic Income experiments per - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - and in planning too for matriculating students in all ~200 countries' languages, and speakers of all 7,111 known living languages as wiki teachers and learners, and thus, brainstorming-wise, potentially for all 7.5 billion wiki teachers and learners on the planet - and also for Universal Basic Income experiments re all 7.5 billion people to alleviate poverty - WUaS may seek to collaborate with Alphabet / Google in communication with Alphabet / Google CEO Sundar Pichai.
7
WUaS tends toward CC-4 openness, without advertising, in planning our WIKI criteria for adding to wiki WUaS, and with Artificial Intelligence too - and potentially will seek to learn more about approaches to this in communication with Wikipedia / Wikimedia / Wikidata, as well as Creative Commons, and others.

(and with none of our WUaS Press books being translated yet, i.e. with the planned WUaS Universal Translator, further planned with AI and machine learning in each of all 7,111 known living languages - https://www.ethnologue.com/guides/how-many-languages).
C
The WUaS Corporation has filed the Statement of Information SI-100 form with state of California soon.
D
WUaS Corporation, having just filed the SI-100, is seeking 4 further Board members, for a remarkable opportunity to grow into ~200 countries' and 7,111 known living languages regarding: "14 planned WUaS revenue streams, Business plan update" - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - starting with an academic press and online-on-the-ground bookstores/ computer stores/ robotics' stores/ hospital technology stores+

I'd like to introduce you all to one another. Bodhisattwa, Pin (Sid), Saumitra, and All. Bodhisattwa, lives in Puruliya, West Bengal, India - https://www.linkedin.com/in/bodhisattwamandal/ - and is a Wikidata / Wikipedia friend, and I know Pin (aka Siddartha) and the Mazumdars from our high school years together in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but where Pin was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, and came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mazumdar, when age 1, to the united states when they matriculated at Cornell University in NY for their Ph.D.s. Saumitra (Gubito) also came to the US to attend Cornell University in his late teens/early twenties (https://www.linkedin.com/in/saumitra-sengupta-5b99a51). And Maitreyi, Pin's younger sister is a medical doctor at Harvard, and has a research site in Bangladesh (https://www.linkedin.com/in/maitreyi-mazumdar-4b545332/).
These are Bodhisattwa and my recent messages in Linked In:
Scott:Thanks for your helpful Wikimedia and Wikidata emails, Bodhisattwa PS: Here's the Bengali language wiki subject page at MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bengali_language - planned in Bengali, for free-to-students' online MIT OCW-centric degrees. Bodhisattwa:
Thanks Scott, I will go through the links for sure.
Scott:Thanks, Bodhisattwa - please let me know what you think would benefit WUaS West Bengal learners, and wiki-teachers, on both A) the wiki side, and B) with free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric degrees in Bengali, from this and related WUaS wiki pages. Will email you with introduction. Thanks so much, Bodhisattwa, and great to connect. Best regards, Scott (See, too, India WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/India and planned West Bengal WUaS, in Bengali and Hindi +)
I wonder if all of you could take on the development of West Bengal World University and School (and India WUaS too at present), both wiki and MIT OCW-centric - and in Bengali, and Hindi, as WUaS gains access to information technologies in these languages? (And even eventually regarding online clinical research with A.I. and machine learning - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages) - as well as potentially online MIT OCW-centric Medical Degrees - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School - in West Bengal and Bangladesh)?
How best to communicate further about all of this?

Rilke, Rainer Maria: Poetic Style and ThemesRilke was sensitive and introspective. His poetic style was rich and supple, varying from the simple to the elaborate and profound. It is generally characterized by striking visual imagery, musicality, and a preponderant use of nouns. The erotic and spiritual love between men and women is a constant theme. In tone Rilke's verse was often mystical and prophetic; he used symbolism as a means of expression and created poetry that bears a strong resemblance to medieval verse. This resemblance may reflect Rilke's religious outlookâhis probing into the emotional and spiritual issues involved in the search for goodness and transcendence in the absence of a personal God and his absorption with death as a poetic theme. Rilke was antimodern in many ways, an attitude particularly evident in his antipathy for large modern cities.

Rainer Maria Rilke: Poems ThemesWritten by Rudolf Pretzler, Nursalin Ashfi
Christian TheologyThroughout the poetic career of Rainer Maria Rilke, the expression or exploration of the Christian faith is a major theme. Such a topic can be found in many of his works, yet is most prevalent in the late early poems that have a strong Christian narrative. A good example of this can be found in âDie Kinderâ (The children) where death is portrayed as a benevolent Christian figure, promising eternal life. This poem is part of a cycle called the eleven visions of Christ, which in itself shows the strong mythical adoration for the Christian leader Rilke had.The depiction of Christian faith and religious symbolism is positive within the works of Rilke where little doubt can be found as to the sincerity and truthfulness of godâs plan for this earth and his benevolence. Especially in his early career as a poet, Rilke wrote almost only religiously charged poems. However, he never really adhered to common themes of religious worship of his time and one would be hard pressed to find many references to the bible or particular sermons within his poems. The Christian faith seems disengaged from the worldly and found only in the God and his acting upon this planet. The most important example of this is found in his âDuino Elegiesâ, which are heavily Christian but in such a mythical way as to be completely different from common Catholic or Protestant teachings. This theme can be considered the most prevalent of all themes within Rilkeâs poetry. It is the main theme of many of his poetic cycles, including âChristus Elf Visionenâ (The eleven visions of Christ), âGebete der Maedchen zu Mariaâ (The girls prayers to Mary), or âDas Marien- Lebenâ (The life of Mary). Later poems leave this theme and focus on other topics like ancient mythology and human life.NationalismAs a man of Bohemian (Czech) origin within the Austrian empire, Rilke showed strong nationalistic streaks within very early poems. While this theme becomes less prevalent in later stages of his writing, especially the very early cycle of poems âLarenopferâ (Sacrifice to the Laren), shows strong nationalistic tendencies within the description of characters.A good example of this can be found in âDas Heimatliedâ (The originâs song). Rilke exemplifies the pride of his people through a young woman, upon being asked to sing a song about her home, says three words in Czech and starts crying in joy. This is significant as Bohemia was part of the Austrian Empire during Rilkeâs lifetime and the usage of the Czech language in contrast to the German narrative can be seen as a nationalistic outburst.Love â A girlâs lifeEspecially at the start of the twentieth century, after his first strong religious wave of poems, Rilke showed a special interest in the life of females, often from his own country. It is important to notice here that almost none of the poems actually describes a particular woman. The girls and women in these poems can be considered ideals of life and as a yearning towards companionship. The poems focus on womenâs life journey (e.g. âJetzt sind sie schon alle selber Frauenâ â They are women already), work (e.g. âWenn die blonden Flechterinnenâ¦â â When the blonde weaversâ¦), romantic joy (e.g. âKoeniginnen seid ihr und reichâ¦â â Queens you are and richâ¦) or even strive (e.g. Maedchenmelancholieâ â melancholy of a girl). However, the depicted women are always beautiful, idealistic and perfect in their position within society. Rilke refrained from depicting reality, rather focussing on an ideal world of men, where womenâs life is purely defined by the existence and love of men.Greek MythologyRilkeâs strong focus on mythological content, especially his recount of the ancient Greek mythology of Orpheus and Eurydice in âDie Sonette an Orpheusâ (Sonnets to Orpheus), found their height after his time as a soldier in First World War. Typical for Rilkeâs style, most of the poems have a strong metaphoric character.
This focus on Greek mythology should, however, not be misunderstood as a refocus away from Christian believes, as most of these poems were created at the same time as his highly mythical Christian series âDuinos Elegienâ. Rainer Maria Rilke
1875â1926
Widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets, Rainer Maria Rilke was unique in his efforts to expand the realm of poetry through new uses of syntax and imagery and in an aesthetic philosophy that rejected Christian precepts and strove to reconcile beauty and suffering, life and death. As C. M. Bowra observed in Rainer Maria Rilke: Aspects of His Mind and Poetry, âWhere others have found a unifying principle for themselves in religion or morality or the search for truth, Rilke found his in the search for impressions and the hope these could be turned into poetry... For him Art was what mattered most in life.â The only child of a German-speaking family in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Rilke was the son of a retired officer in the Austrian army who worked as a railroad official; his mother was a socially ambitious and possessive woman. At age eleven Rilke began his formal schooling at a military boarding academy; in 1891 he was discharged due to health problems that would plague him throughout his life. He immediately returned to Prague, only to find that his parents had divorced in his absence. Shortly thereafter he began receiving private instruction toward passing the entrance exams for Pragueâs Charles-Ferdinand University. In 1894 his first book of verse, Leben und Lieder: Bilder und Tagebuchblatter, was published. After a short stint at Charles-Ferdinand University, Rilke left Prague for Munich where he mingled in the cityâs literary circles, had several of his plays produced, published his poetry collections, Larenopfer and Traumgelkront, and was introduced to the work of Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen, who was a decisive influence during Rilkeâs formative years. Visiting Venice in 1897, Rilke met Lou Andreas-Salome, a married woman fifteen years his senior, who was also a strong influence. After spending the summer of 1897 with her in the Bavarian Alps, Rilke accompanied Salome and her husband to Berlin in late 1897 and to Italy the following year.Rilkeâs early verse, short stories, and plays are characterized by their romanticism. His early poems show the influence of the German folk song tradition and have been compared to the lyrical work of Heinrich Heine. The most popular poetry collections of Rilkeâs during this period were Vom lieben Gott und Anderes (Stories of God) and the romantic cycle Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke (The Story of the Love and Death of Cornet Christoph Rilke), which remained the poetâs most widely recognized book during his lifetime. Dictionary of Literary Biography contributor George C. Schoolfield called Rilkeâs first poetry collection, Leben und Lieder (âLife and Songsâ), âunbearably sentimental,â but thought later works such as Larenopfer(âOffering to the Laresâ) and Traumgekroent (âCrowned with Dreamsâ) demonstrated âconsiderably better proof of his lyric talent.â Although none of Rilkeâs plays are considered major works, and his short stories, according to Schoolfield, demonstrate the authorâs immaturity, the latter do show âhis awareness of language and a certain psychological refinement,â as well as âflashes of brilliant satiric giftâ and âevidence of a keen insight into human relations.â Schoolfield also observed that âsome of Rilkeâs best tales are autobiographical,â such as âPierre Dumont,â which features a young boy saying goodbye to his mother at the gates to a military school, and âEwald Tragy,â a two-part story about a boy who leaves his family and hometown of Prague for Munich, where he fights loneliness but enjoys a new sense of freedom.
In 1899 Rilke made the first of two pivotal trips to Russia with Salome, discovering what he termed his âspiritual fatherlandâ in both the people and the landscape. There Rilke met Leo Tolstoy, L. O. Pasternak (father of Boris Pasternak), and the peasant poet Spiridon Droschin, whose works Rilke translated into German. These trips provided Rilke with the poetic material and inspiration essential to his developing philosophy of existential materialism and art as religion. Inspired by the lives of the Russian people, whom the poet considered more devoutly spiritual than other Europeans, Rilkeâs work during this period often featured traditional Christian imagery and concepts, but presented art as the sole redeemer of humanity. Soon after his return from Russia in 1900, he began writing Das Stundenbuch enthaltend die drei Bücher: Vom moenchischen Leben; Von der Pilgerschaft; Von der Armuth und vom Tode, a collection that âmarked for him the end of an epoch,â according to Bowra and others. This book, translated as The Book of Hours; Comprising the Three Books: Of the Monastic Life, Of Pilgrimage, Of Poverty and Death, consists of a series of prayers about the search for God. Because of this concern, Hound and Horn critic Hester Pickman noted that the book âmight have fallen out of the writings of Christian contemplatives,â except that âthe essential pattern is an inversion of theirs. God is not light but darknessânot a father, but a son, not the creator but the created. He and not man is our neighbor for men are infinitely far from each other. They must seek God, not where one or two are gathered in His name, but alone.â
Whenever Rilke writes about God, however, he is not referring to the deity in the traditional sense, but rather uses the term to refer to the life force, or nature, or an all-embodying, pantheistic consciousness that is only slowly coming to realize its existence. âExtending the idea of evolution,â Eudo C. Mason explained in an introduction to The Book of Hours, âand inspired probably also in some measure by Nietzscheâs idea of the Superman, Rilke arrives at the paradoxical conception of God as the final result instead of the first cause of the cosmic process.â Holding in contempt âall other more traditional forms of devoutness, which⦠merely âaccept God as a given fact,ââ Rilke did not deny Godâs existence, but insisted that all possibilities about the nature of life be given equal consideration.
The real theme of The Book of Hours, concluded Mason, is the poetâs âown inner life,â his struggles toward comprehension, and, âabove all⦠his perils as a poet.â The second major concept in The Book of Hours is Rilkeâs apotheosis of art. ââReligion is the art of those who are uncreative,ââ Mason quoted Rilke as having said; the poetâs work is often concerned with the artistâs role in society and with his inner doubts about his belief in poetryâs superiority. Because of the firm establishment of these two themes in The Book of Hours, the collection âis essential to the understanding of what comes afterwardsâ in Rilkeâs writing, attested Pickman. The Book of Hours was also another of the poetâs most popular works, second only to The Story of the Love and Death of Cornet Christoph Rilke during his lifetime. But despite being a âvery beautifulâ book, it also âremains too constantly abstract. It lacks the solid reality of great poetry,â according to Pickman.
Rilke fixed his verse more firmly in reality in his next major poetry collection, Neue Gedichte (New Poems). The major influence behind this work was Rilkeâs association with the famous French sculptor, Auguste Rodin. Working as Rodinâs secretary from 1905 to 1906, Rilke gained a greater appreciation of his work ethic. More importantly, however, the poetâs verses became objective, evolving from an impressionistic, personal vision to the representation of this vision with impersonal symbolism. He referred to this type of poetry as Dinggedichte (thing poems). These verses employed a simple vocabulary to describe concrete subjects experienced in everyday life and would lead W. H. Auden to declare in New Republic that âRilkeâs most immediate and obvious influence has been upon diction and imagery.â Rilke expressed ideas with âphysical rather than intellectual symbols. While Shakespeare, for example, thought of the non-human world in terms of the human, Rilke thinks of the human in terms of the non-human, of what he calls Things (Dinge).â Having learned the skill of perceptive observation from Rodin and, later, from the French painter Paul Cezanne, Rilke âsustained for a little while the ability to write without inspiration, to transform his observationsâindeed his whole lifeâinto art,â according to Nancy Willard, author of Testimony of the Invisible Man. The ââthingnessâ of these poems,â explained Erich Heller in The Artistâs Journey into the Interior and Other Essays, âreflects not the harmony in which an inner self lives with its âobjectsâ; it reflects a troubled inner self immersing itself in âthe things.ââ But although this objective approach innovatively addressed subjects never before recognized by other poets and created âdazzling poems,â Rilke realized, according to Willard, that it âdid not really open the secret of living things.â
By this point in his career, Rilke was reaching a crisis in his art that revealed itself both in New Poems and his only major prose work, the novel Die Aufzeichnungen des Malte Laurids Brigge (The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge). These works express the poetâs growing doubts about whether anything existed that was superior to mankind and his world. This, in turn, brought into question Rilkeâs very reason for writing poetry: the search for deeper meaning in life through art. In her book, Rainer Maria Rilke, E. M. Butler averred that âThe Notebooks of Malte Laurids Briggeâ marks a crisis in Rilkeâs attitude to God, a crisis which might be hailed as the loss of a delusion, or deplored as the loss of an ideal⦠[His concept of the] future artist-god had never been more than a sublime hypothesis, deriving from Rilkeâs belief in the creative and transforming powers of art.â Having failed, in his mind, to accurately represent God in his poetry, Rilke attempted to âtransform life into artâ in his New Poems. âWhat he learnt,â Butler continued, âis what every artist has to face sooner or later, the realisation that life is much more creative than art. So that his mythological dream, the apotheosis of art, appeared to be founded on delusion. Either art was not as creative as he had thought, or he was not such a great artist. Both these doubts were paralyzing, and quite sufficient to account for the terrible apprehension present in every line of Malte Laurids Brigge. For this skepticism struck at the roots of his reason and justification for existence. Either he was the prophet of a new religion, or he was nobody.â
The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge is a loosely autobiographical novel about a student who is the last descendant of a noble Danish family (Rilke believed, erroneously according to his biographers, that he was distantly related to Carinthian nobility), and follows his life from his birth to a grim, poverty-stricken life as a student in Paris. Images of death and decay (especially in the Paris scenes) and Malteâs fear of death are a continuous presence throughout the narrative. Because Rilke never finished The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge (in one of his letters, the author told a friend he ended the book ââout of exhaustion,ââ reported Schoolfield) Malteâs ultimate fate is left ambiguous. In one of Rilkeâs letters translated in Letters of Rainer Maria Rilke: 1910-1926, the author remarked that the most significant question in The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge is: â[How] is it possible to live when after all the elements of this life are utterly incomprehensible to us?â As William Rose determined in Rainer Maria Rilke: Aspects of His Mind and Poetry, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge actually was kind of a catharsis for the author in which âRilke gave full vent⦠to the fears which haunted him.â âWithout the Notebooksbehind him,â Wood concluded, âthe poet would hardly have venturedâ to write the Duino Elegies in 1912.
Duino Elegies âmight well be called the greatest set of poems of modern times,â claimed Colin Wilson, author of Religion and the Rebel. Wilson averred, âThey have had as much influence in German-speaking countries as [T. S. Eliotâs] The Waste Land has in England and America.â Having discovered a dead end in the objective poetry with which he experimented in New Poems, Rilke once again turned to his own personal vision to find solutions to questions about the purpose of human life and the poetâs role in society. Duino Elegies finally resolved these puzzles to Rilkeâs own satisfaction. Called Duino Elegies because Rilke began writing them in 1912 while staying at Duino Castle on the Italian Adriatic coast, the collection took ten years to complete, due to an inspiration-stifling depression the poet suffered during and after World War I. When his inspiration returned, however, the poet wrote a total of eleven lengthy poems for the book; later this was edited down to ten poems. The unifying poetic image that Rilke employs throughout Duino Elegies is that of angels, which carry many meanings, albeit not the usual Christian connotations. The angels represent a higher force in life, both beautiful and terrible, completely indifferent to mankind; they represent the power of poetic vision, as well as Rilkeâs personal struggle to reconcile art and life. The Duino angels thus allowed Rilke to objectify abstract ideas as he had done in New Poems, while not limiting him to the mundane materialism that was incapable of thoroughly illustrating philosophical issues.
The revolutionary poetic philosophy that Rilke proposed in Duino Elegies is considered significant to many literary scholars. âNo poet before him had been brave enough to accept the whole of [the dark side of the] world, as if it were unquestionably valid and potentially universal,â asserted Conrad Aiken in his Collected Criticism. Like the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who lived about the same time as Rilke, the poet determined his objective to be â[praise] and celebration in the face of and in full consciousness of the facts that had caused other minds to assume an attitude of negativity,â wrote Emergence from Chaos author Stuart Holroyd. But even though the final purpose of Duino Elegies is to praise existence, the âpredominant note⦠is one of lament.â By overcoming his quandaries in this collection, Rilke was completely free to devote his poetry to praise in Sonnets to Orpheus.
âThe Sonnets are the songs of his victory,â affirmed Bowra in The Heritage of Symbolism. âIn the Sonnets,â Bowra wrote, âRilke shows what poetry meant to him, what he got from it and what he hoped for it. The dominating mood is joy. It is a complement to the distress and anxiety of the Elegies, and in Rilkeâs whole performance the two books must be taken together.â Aiken similarly commented that the â Sonnets to Orpheus⦠is, with the Elegies, Rilkeâs finest workâthe two books really belong together, shine the better for each otherâs presence.â
In the last few years of his life, Rilke was inspired by such French poets as Paul Valery and Jean Cocteau, and wrote most of his last verses in French. Rilke suffered from illness his whole life and died of leukemia in 1926 while staying at the Valmont sanatorium near Lake Geneva. On his deathbed, he remained true to his anti-Christian beliefs and refused the company of a priest. Hermann Hesse summed up Rilkeâs evolution as a poet in his book, My Belief: Essays on Life and Art: âRemarkable, this journey from the youthful music of Bohemian folk poetry⦠to Orpheus, remarkable how⦠his mastery of form increases, penetrates deeper and deeper into his problems! And at each stage now and again the miracle occurs, his delicate, hesitant, anxiety-prone person withdraws, and through him resounds the music of the universe; like the basin of a fountain he becomes at once instrument and ear.â Without his parentsâ religious ideals to comfort him, Rilke found peace in his art. As Holroyd concluded, the âpoetry which Rilke wrote to express and extend his experience⦠is one of the most successful attempts a modern man has made to orientate himself within his chaotic world.â

I've translated both Rilke's poetry, as well as the Mehta's book "Yoga: The Iyengar Way" into German in the late 1980s, as a way to learn both translation, and improve my German. (I was living in the Philadelphia area, in Wallingford, Media, and near Swarthmore, and was both a student at Pendle Hill: A Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation for a year, and working in the Pendle Hill bookstore and publishing house after this for about 2.5 years - https://pendlehill.org - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendle_Hill_Quaker_Center_for_Study_and_Contemplation).
