Hi Ma,

Am sympathetic with Habermas' s philosophical anthropological thinking in article esp.

So true!
Appreciating ... https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/habermas/ ... and esp. ...
"Habermas's interest in the political subsequently led him to a series of philosophical studies and critical-social analyses that eventually appeared in English in his Toward a Rational Society (1970) and Theory and Practice (1973b). Whereas the latter consists primarily of reflections on the history of philosophy, the former represents an attempt to apply his emerging theory of rationality to the critical analysis of contemporary society, in particular the student protest movement and its institutional target, the authoritarian and technocratic structures that held sway in higher education and politics.Habermas's critical reflection takes a nuanced approach to both sides of the social unrest that characterized the late sixties. Although sympathetic with students' demand for more democratic participation and hopeful that their activism harbored a potential for positive social transformation, he also did not hesitate to criticize its militant aspects, which he labeled self-delusory and “pernicious” (1970, 48). In his critique of technocracy—governance by scientific experts and bureaucracy—he relied on a philosophical framework that anticipates categories in his later thought, minus the philosophy of language he would work out in the 1970s. Specifically, Habermas sharply distinguished between two modes of action, “work” and “interaction,” which correspond to enduring interests of the human species (ibid., chap. 6). The former includes modes of action based on the rational choice of efficient means, that is, forms of instrumental and strategic action, whereas the latter refers to forms of “communicative action” in which actors coordinate their behaviors on the basis of “consensual norms” (ibid., 91–92). Habermas's distinction in effect appropriates the classical Aristotelian contrast between techne and praxis for critical social theory (1973b, chap. 1). The result is a distinctively Habermasian critique of science and technology as ideology: by reducing practical questions about the good life to technical problems for experts, contemporary elites eliminate the need for public, democratic discussion of values, thereby depoliticizing the population (1970, chap. 6). The legitimate human interest in technical control of nature thus functions as an ideology—a screen that masks the value-laden character of government decision making in the service of the capitalist status quo. Unlike Herbert Marcuse, who regarded that interest as specific to capitalist society, Habermas affirmed the technical control of nature as a genuinely universal species-interest; pace Horkheimer and Adorno in their Dialectic of Enlightenment, the technical interest did not necessitate social domination.Habermas defended this philosophical anthropology most fully in his Knowledge and Human Interests (1971b; German ed., 1968b), the work that represents his first attempt to provide a systematic framework for an interdisciplinary critical social theory. As Habermas conceived his task, he had to establish critical social theory as a respectable, distinct form of knowledge, in large measure through a methodological critique of the then-dominant positivist philosophy of science and historicist hermeneutics. He thus develops a theory of “knowledge-constitutive interests” that are tied both to “the natural history of the human species” and to “the imperatives of the socio-cultural form of life,” but are not reducible to them (ibid., 168). "His focus on student movements in the 1960s is fascinating, philosophically, and his books are remarkable resources about this too! - https://twitter.com/jurgenoutfitter - :)

Scott MacLeod <sgkmacleod@gmail.com>2:23 PM (5 hours ago)to Scott, JanieMa,
I only found one reference to Manuel Castells in the Stanford Encyclopedia to Philosophy - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/globalization/ - and as a Castellian, and with regard to Globalization, about which I've also written academically:
"For example, there is substantial empirical evidence that cross-border flows and exchanges (of goods, people, information, etc.), as well as the emergence of directly transnational forms of production by means of which a single commodity is manufactured simultaneously in distant corners of the globe, are gaining in prominence (Castells 1996)."
Habermas is also cited in these article:
"Jürgen Habermas, a prominent cosmopolitan-minded theorist, has tried to formulate a defense of the European Union that conceives of it as a key steppingstone towards supranational democracy. If the EU is to help succeed in salvaging the principle of popular sovereignty in a world where the decay of nation state-based democracy makes democracy vulnerable, the EU will need to strengthen its elected representative organs and better guarantee the civil, political, and social and economic rights of all Europeans (Habermas 2001, 58–113; 2009). Representing a novel form of postnational constitutionalism, it potentially offers some broader lessons for those hoping to save democratic constitutionalism under novel global conditions. Despite dire threats to the EU posed by nationalist and populist movements, Habermas and other cosmopolitan-minded intellectuals believe that it can be effectively reformed and preserved (Habermas 2012).
In opposition to Held, Habermas, and other cosmopolitans, skeptics underscore the purportedly utopian character of such proposals, arguing that democratic politics presupposes deep feelings of trust, commitment, and belonging that remain uncommon at the postnational and global levels."This SEP article is written by Bill Scheuerman who taught at Pitt for some years (https://polisci.indiana.edu/documents/profiles/scheuerman1.pdf and https://intlstudies.indiana.edu/people/faculty/scheuerman-william.html) - and who's most recent book is titled "Civil Disobedience" (sounds like he could be a Quaker too!). Do you happen to know him?
Love, Scott

[Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy: Last chance to review the recommendations, next steps

Hi everyone,

We’re in week 4 of community conversations about the movement strategy recommendations. Thank you to everyone who has already taken part. The community conversations will continue until Friday, February 21 - you can get involved on Meta[1] in Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese, strategize with your community or organization, or send the core team your feedback to strategy2030@wikimedia.org.

This current round of community conversations is the last opportunity to suggest improvements to the recommendations. They will be finalized before the end of March, and then published for the movement to understand them, reflect on what they mean in their project, local, or thematic context, and move into implementation.

== Movement feedback: what happens next ==
All feedback is being collected, reviewed and analyzed on an ongoing basis. Here are the  next steps after February 21:

* Week commencing February 24: the core team will summarize all the feedback received in a report. You are welcome to continue commenting and discussing during this time, but the discussions will not be as closely facilitated and documented.

* Week commencing March 2: the core team will publish the above report on Meta to give the movement an opportunity to review the content and give feedback as to whether it accurately reflects their input. The closing date for this is March 6. This summary report will then be finalized and published.

In mid-March, the feedback from the Board of Trustees, movement conversations and reviewers' input will be considered in the creation of the final, improved set of recommendations. A rationale for things that have not been considered will be provided, too. Our aim is to have the recommendations finalized and published in late March. More about the actual integration work coming soon.

== Video and podcast about our work; one-pager ==
Members of the core team - Tanveer Hasan, Information and Knowledge Liaison, and Mehrdad Pourzaki, Information and Knowledge Manager - recently held a presentation about all the recommendations at the Wikimedia Foundation All Hands. They provide a quick, concise overview
of every recommendation and also some insight into how each was developed. Video of the presentation [2] and the presentation slides [3] are now on Commons.

Jan Ainali has interviewed me for his podcast Wikipedia Podden. I’m speaking with him about the past, present and future of movement strategy[4].

The one-pager created by Andrew Lih (User:Fuzheado) has been very popular. Again, a big thank you to Andrew for putting this together. In addition to Arabic, English, and Hindi versions, it is now also available in Farsi [5, 6].

== Meeting notes from the office hours  ==
We have published a condensed summary of the meeting notes [7] from the office hours that were held by the core team on Thursday, January 30. The notes provide an overview of the key points and questions that were raised during the two calls as well as summaries of the responses.

== Do you have further questions? ==
Members of the core team will join the upcoming Wikimedia Café on February 15 [8], which will focus on the movement strategy recommendations. The Wikimedia Café is a community-led meeting hosted by User:Pine and User:Bluerasberry, and we are happy to take part and help answer any questions people may have about the recommendations. Additionally, if you are looking for more information about any of the above topics or about the movement strategy in general, take a look at
our FAQ section [9].

Happy weekend,
Nicole

Thanks for this great plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim - regarding the sum of all knowledge. I enjoyed your podcast - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WP_72_-_Wikimedia_2030,_a_strategy_interview.mp3#{{int:filedesc}} - in particular. (Seems like in the 'united states of whatebber' per your Twitter photo, Nicole - https://twitter.com/antischokke - that tactics, by way of comparison, have been very significant thus far in the Wikimedia movement).

(In that CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University & School donated itself to Wikidata in 2015, and received WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017 as a consequence, am curious if WUaS would be considered an affiliate per these email addressees above, or what?)

I have questions relating mostly to "the sum of all knowledge" goal of Wikipedia -

A) epistemology questions - How does or will Wikimedia / Wikipedia / Wikidata approach academic knowledge, eg in the ~32 departments in MIT OCW, for example, in particular, in this strategizing - and per information technology as a new aspect of knowledge generation?

B) linguistic questions - How will Wikidata approach its ~300 languages in becoming a platform for academic linguistic departments, and regarding the sum of all knowledge (and eventually all 7,111 known living languages)? ... and also regarding the Wikidata lexicographical project.

C) questions, brainstorming and knowledge-wise, about 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' as a new social science and STEM method ... how could Wikipedians and others begin to develop this wiki project in the Wikidata / Wikimedia ecosystem?

D) questions about planning for all 7.5 billion people in first 300 languages, and then in all 7,111 known living languages, as Wikipedia wiki editors, curators, knowledge generators? It seems that these potentially 7.5 billion people on the planet earth are most remarkable as generators of "the sum of knowledge." How is Wikipedia planning for all these 'knowledge generators'?

Thanks,
Scott

Hello Nicole,

The second video seems to be incomplete. There are, for example, several
jump cuts, e.g., at 05:07, 11:08, 17:08, 22:31, etc. At 11:14 the
presenters invite questions or comments, and at 41:32 someone is clearly
being called upon to offer one, but they are not shown in the video. Could
you please provide a link to the entire video without cuts, including any
questions or comments and the responses to them?

Dear Anant Agarwal (CEO of edX),
I just applied to this position a second time very succinctly (at Jim Spohrer's suggestion who says hi) -

Dear Jim, and Larry,

I came across this video yesterday from edX hiring and talent managers (in this 'Integration Specialist' job opening - https://boards.greenhouse.io/edx/jobs/2018844 - which I won't apply for) -

Libby Bowen - edX Hiring Manager Interview - February 15, 2019 with Rose Sinclair -

https://youtu.be/DHlo8Hf-EMM

- and which is on the edX recruiting channel (which is Rose Sinclair's endeavor I think)

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKrZsc4AQga6nv9XoKhsz_g

and found all of these interviews fascinating. And in one of them, the co-CEO, Adam Medros, was interviewed. I 'LinkedIn' with him per his video edX recruiting video - https://youtu.be/7si3HzgEIxA - and with " - which I enjoyed, & am in communication with Anant Agarwal these days regarding CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch in ~200 countries' languages & exploring edX collaborations. Best regards, Scott (worlduniversityandschool.org & scottmacleod.com)." And while he looked at my LinkedIn profile this morning, the connection is pending.

After watching these videos, and also recognizing how valuable it would be to be an edX partner / member / collaborator (but their business manager Lee seems to have closed the door on this for WUaS) for licensing with the state of California's BPPE and then for WASC senior accreditation as a platform, it strikes me too that these excellent diverse edX managers in all of these videos (and the entire edX organization too) could be a great platform and infrastructure from which to build and grow World Univ & Sch. How to connect with them in all these regards, I wonder? I think edX's 3 missions, but esp its research mission - https://www.edx.org/about-us "Advance teaching and learning through research" in particular - is perhaps most significant in these regards too. Am keeping my eye on https://www.edx.org/careers but in preparing for WUaS Monthly Business Meeting tomorrow, 2/15/20 - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/keyhole-sand-dollar-agenda-and-minutes.html - I wonder how to connect further with edX - and especially collaborate with them. Send Adam Medros and Rose Sinclair and Anant Agarwal my two edX job applications again, upon their invitation?

I enjoyed too, Jim, your

"AI and OpenPower" IBM video -
https://youtu.be/4_uQdNtjl60 - and your mentioning Tarun Sainani, who came over to a party at my place with Takeshi Suzuki last October 2019. Am hoping WUaS can develop cognitive assistants in our home robotics' projects with time.

Thanks, Scott

Agenda & News ...

Agenda and News for Sat Feb 15, 2020 World University & School Monthly Business Meeting

0Please remember that open WUaS Monthly Business Meeting (in the manner of Friends/Quakers) is an opportunity for you to help create wiki MIT OCW-centric World University and School. Please email info@worlduniversityandschool.org to join the hour-long conversation on 3rd Saturdays at 9am PT.

1World University and School is seeking our 2nd undergraduate matriculating class for free-to-students' online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric Bachelor's degrees in English, in the autumn of 2020 (where you can also wiki-teach, edit, share resources and ideas, learn, develop a teaching conversation - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects) ...

2Monies are now newly available to World University and School for state of California BPPE licensing (after first attending a CA BPPE workshop on 2/20/19 in San Jose, CA)! Seeking to head to another BPPE licensing workshop on 11 March 2020 in Sacramento, CA ...
https://www.bppe.ca.gov/schools/application_workshops.shtmlhttps://www.bppe.ca.gov/forms_pubs/approval_nonaccredited.pdf

3WUaS needs the monies now for accreditation (probably for WASC senior accreditation), after licensing CA's BPPE.

4World University and School's web site is now editable again, with secure FTP, so it will likely not be hacked again. (Unfortunately, due to a hack before the end of 2019, our donations button was removed, and we lost out on received donations).
World University and School, and the WUaS Press, continues to seek professional web site development.

5World University and School is exploring collaborating for licensing courses for cryptocurrency compliance in nation states in Europe and regarding both Stanford law CodeX and WUaS Law Schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_SchoolSee: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/panthera-stanford-law-school-codex-mtg.html (and with regards too to WUaS seeking to facilitate a single digital currency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks and distributed via Universal Basic Income experiments to all 7.5 billion people on planet, and for alleviating poverty - see the WUaS Press below).

6In planning for matriculating students in all ~200 countries' languages, and speakers of all 7,111 known living languages, and thus, brainstorming-wise, for all 7.5 billion wiki teachers and learners on the planet - and also for Universal Basic Income experiments re all 7.5 billion people to alleviate poverty - WUaS may seek to collaborate with Alphabet / Google. In these regards, here's Alphabet / Google CEO Sundar Pichai: "One of the next frontiers for Maps will be to help the billions of people who live without a physical address get a digital one. These open-source digital addresses, called Plus Codes, are based on lat. & long. coords. ..."http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/73990824.cms … #RealisticVirtualEarth ~

7WUaS is planning our WIKI criteria for adding and with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning ahead. And it's likely that WUaS will develop a first set of Artificial Intelligence / AI Universities (emerging from CC-4 licensed MIT OCW in 4 languages), and so planning for this for both humans and bots - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/anisoptera-ana-cotta-dragonfly-planning.html.

8World Univ & Sch seeks to develop a realistic virtual earth for STEM, classrooms, and everything, and potentially with the TensorFlow CHIP #TPU #EdgeTPU for image recognition https://twitter.com/rzembo/status/1223648708023193600?s=20… & #MachineLearning > #RealisticVirtualEarth #RealisticVirtualHarbin @HarbinBook for #EthnoWikiVirtualWorldGraphy new social science #ActualVirtual method https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tensor_processing_unit … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_neural_network … ~ and as part of WUaS AI and machine learning developments especially - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1224063932299481088?s=20

9 While WUaS filed our Form 990-N, (Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations Not Required to File Form 990) successfully in early January 2020, WUaS will file the SI-100 with state of California soon.

Agenda and News for Feb 15, 2020 WUaS Corporation Board Meeting

AThe WUaS Press / Corporation seeks too, brainstorming-wise, as we code for matriculating students/ Universitians in all 7,111 known living languages and in ~200 countries each a Wikidata PIN# (in its ~300 languages), to plan for all 7.5 billion people, and to explore facilitating a single digital currency, for example, the "Pi" cryptocurrency or similar, to be distributed by Universal Basic Income experiments (to alleviate poverty).See, too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/panthera-stanford-law-school-codex-mtg.html

The revised data is due to a review of past suspected cases.

Previous concerns over the misreporting of the scale appear to be true.

Western Honey Bee re upcoming 'Honey in the Bag' Scottish small pipes' album ....

to Connor, Andrew, Roddy, Finlay

Hi Connor,

I'm writing to inquire about Skype lessons with you on my Scottish small pipes. How might this work best? Would you be available to meet some afternoon at 4 or 5 pm, Glasgow time, in Skype (which is 8am or 9am in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I live - in Canyon CA 94516)? Or another time? Am seeking to develop my "Honey in the Bag" Scottish small pipes' album and CD (on my A chanter), as well as experiment playing B flat and D chanters and with the Combo Drone on my Walsh SSP and for a Scottish Country Dance band I play in in Berkeley. Thanks very much.  (I've lived 2 full years in Edinburgh, studying at Fettes College in the 1st year 6th in ~76-77 and at the University of Edinburgh in 2003-2004 in the School of Celtic and Scottish Studies, and where Gary West was my tutor, so - like you, Andrew, with CMU / Pittsburgh PA / USA culture, am a bit familiar with Scottish culture). Thank you.

Best regards, Scott

PS
FYI, Connor, here are some recent related emails to Roddy and Finlay in these regards:

Thanks so much, Finlay and Roddy,

I think I'd like to explore taking the next 5 lessons or so with Connor Sinclair, as a young world class piper (with a music degree from the Glasgow Royal Conservatoire in piping in part too) who also plays the flute and whistles in an ensemble / traditional music group (where many keys are played here by Connor Sinclair on the flute and whistle - https://gnossmusic.com/media/ :). And he's won the Gold medal at the Northern Meeting (https://www.pipesdrums.com/article/northern-meeting-2019-day-1-silver-medal-goes-to-mackenzie-mccready-takes-a-msr/) recently. I think he'd be good at experimenting with the Scottish small pipes on D and B flat chanters too (and with Combo Drone also), which could be enjoyable for him as well. I'll email him to inquire.

I created an initial structure for the tunes I'm planning to play on my Honey in the Bag upcoming album - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/02/maunga-terevaka-volcano-honey-in-bag.html?m=0 - which is another big step in this process.

Am seeking to make my upcoming "Honey in the Bag" a world class Scottish small pipes' album. Here's Stuart Liddell :), and where this Piping Live performance is a kind of model of the playing old favorites amazingly well - and for my upcoming album -

https://youtu.be/tuhlcFj8NUw -

https://youtu.be/gOU0OrqXSHU - in these regards. Am also taking a bit of an "The Ascension of Inveraray & District Pipe Band - 2004-2013" approach to my "Honey in the Bag" album -

https://youtu.be/wbikiMAjhDM.

In an innovative way, am wondering too about founding an online Scottish small pipes quartet in real real time, possibly with A. Bova and D. Nevins, when information technology from Google, for example, for this comes along. What do you think? Will broach this with all of you.

Thanks so much. (And bon voyage, Finlay!).

Best regards, Scott

PPS
In addition to taking lessons in preparation for my upcoming "Honey in the Bag" album, which I'm planning to do fairly traditionally (see these tunes - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/gobies-scott-macleods-honey-in-bag-cd.html), playing MSR HJ slow airs etc., on a SSP A chanter, I'm also interested in learning to play the Scottish small pipes' chanters in B flat and D, and

1) with GHB sheet music (let's call this in the key of A mixolydian - with 2 sharps in the staff key notation - see below), as well as

2) Open Band (Berkeley) Scottish Country Dance band sheet music in multiple keys for the sheet music staff notation (but mostly in the keys of A, D, G, C and B flat in the sheet music staff notation). (See - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand).

... To share a concrete, practical example, playing "The Battle of Waterloo" tune works on the A chanter and on the D chanter with the same fingering and sounds good - and so I could use the same GHB sheet music in A to play both. Why and how to think about this? (The 4 drones of my Walsh Scottish small pipes, with a combination drone, and the ability to produce a fifth sound-wise, or chord-wise, raise another set of related questions I'd be interested in conversing about with a potential NPC teacher as well). (And could I even possibly explore become a National Piping Centre online Scottish small pipes' teacher at some point in the future - and with these foci too?). Thank you!

And could I explore emailing you, Connor, the sheet music (in a Google Docs format) from Open Band every week, so you could get a sense of the music for different chanters even - and all in an experimental vein (and thus potentially enjoyably especially)? (It's also a rich trove of Scottish dancing sheet music).

With very best wishes, Scott

Will likely seek to wear my MacLeod kilt and Prince Charlie doublet for album cover too ... (I got this kilt in the around-1976, and it still fits, and I think my father, Gordon K. MacLeod MD was part of getting this kilt:).

Hi, Finlay (MacDonald), and Roddy (MacLeod),

Thanks for your email, and for checking on Monday morning about your availability for a lesson (before you leave for the States on Wednesday?) Tuesday? Looking forward to it, if we can fit a lesson in. I'm emailing both of you with regard to my remaining 6 lessons with the NPC (since you might have some good ideas about this too, Roddy - as the NPC's principal).

So I'd be interested in learning which NPC teachers might have experience with these other Scottish small pipes' chanters and keys. If Mr. Nevans (re his playing "small pipes, and also an expert on theory!!!") is one possibility, great - but if there are other NPC teachers who have explicit experience with this, I'd be interested in learning of them too. And, to share a concrete practical example, playing "The Battle of Waterloo" tune works on the A chanter and on the D chanter - and I could use the GHB sheet music in A to play both. Thank you!

Cheers, Scott

What musical key does the bagpipe play in?
http://www.themacleods.net/qanda/skmqa019.htm

The bagpipe scale is based on the Mixolydian mode or scale. This scale is based on a major scale but with a minor seventh. Specifically the bagpipe uses the A Mixolydian mode. This is related to the key of D Major and contains the notes, G, A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G, and A.

Here are my off-the-cuff suggestions for a beginning soloist for these tune types. Keep in mind that bands and more advanced soloists will often play these faster - especially the marches.

Slow Marches, airs & waltzes ........... 45-60 bpm
2/4 marches .................................. 58-68 (maybe up to 74 if not competing)
6/8 marches .................................. 55-68
4/4 marches .................................. 74-80
Reels ........................................... 74-80
Strathspeys .................................. 108-120
Jigs ............................................. 108-120
Hornpipes ..................................... 74-82

Hope that helps.

Ma′unga Terevaka volcano: "Honey in the Bag" album in A, Scottish small pipes' chanters in B flat and D * * * Scott MacLeod solo album "Honey in the Bag" tune list
