Agenda and News for Sat July 18, 2020 World University and School Monthly Business Meeting
World University and School
1 World Univ & Sch has reached out to the Open edX service partner MOOC-it France -https://open.edx.org/marketplace-category/service-partners/ - re potential collaborations in developing WUaS courses on the Open edX platform from best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare in its 4 languages - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/sri-lankan-elephant-mooc-it-france-edx.html . MOOC-it France was the Instructional design Prize winner with its "Les Copros Vertes" website at Open edX recently - https://twitter.com/OpenEdX/status/1281212341917560832?s=20 and https://open.edx.org/blog/announcing-the-inaugural-open-edx-prize-winners/.
2And best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School is seeking to matriculate our second online undergraduate Bachelor's degree class this autumn - potentially in collaboration with Open edX, so with courses on the Open edX platform; see The College at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School (with these 6 majors - 1) EECS, 2) General Science, 3) General Engineering, 4) English, 5) History, 6) Business - see: http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - for free-to-students' best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric Bachelor degrees.
Like with Open edX courses, WUaS students would initially simply sign up for their courses on something like the WUaS Open edX platform, in part. (You at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - will eventually be part of this WUaS sign-in process). Students will potentially matriculate online from all ~200 countries in the world, first in English.
3WUaS also seeks to develop a major online France World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/France - in French (offering online Bach., Ph.D., Law, MD and IB high school degrees). And French is an official language in 29 out of ~206 countries in the world (per recent Olympics). And WUaS seeks to develop major online universities in each of these countries in French too. - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/sri-lankan-elephant-mooc-it-france-edx.html .

Collaborate with sister wiki project, WikiTree, which is planning a single Family Tree presumably for all 7.5 billion people.
6Sri Lanka World University and School is growing, has a new WUaS email address Sri Lanka WUaS <SriLanka@worlduniversityandschool.org> - if anyone you know in Sri Lanka might have questions about matriculating at WUaS.
1000 online high school graduates as WUaS students in the autumn - high achieving 'toppers' - in English? Sri Lanka World University and School mentioned this number, and even if we get one matriculating Sri Lankan 18 year old, as he said, it will be a success.

Am interested at World Univ & Sch in the actual-virtual, physical-digital, and for online STEM laboratories. Am thinking, brainstorming-wise, of physical Lego Robotics into an emergent educational Minecraft, Google Street View with time slider with Brick Street View (where brick refers to Lego brick). What would happen if you developed all your EE physical classroom technologies through a realistic virtual earth, eg develop circuits from a breadboard not only on the physical breadboard at a student's home, but also through Google Street View - at the atomic level even? Hi Angelina, and All, - brainstorming-wise, how about in a realistic virtual earth for STEM - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM?src=hashtag_click ? Am thinking Google Street View with Time Slider and with a Film-To-3D App (not yet made) into Google Poly (a library of virtual objects)? ... and potentially in Spanish with Google Translate too!
@ElizabethStephan, (and All), since you teach chemical engineering as well - brainstorming-wise, how about in a realistic virtual earth for STEM - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM?src=hashtag_click ? Am thinking Google Street View with Time Slider and with a Film-To-3D App (not yet made) into Google Poly (a library of virtual objects)? ... and potentially in Spanish with Google Translate too!
@Elizabeth, brainstorming-wise further, & regarding, for ex., Angelina's question looking for a "tool that allows to do some distillation, humidification, drying ... in a virtual way" and with a "building out" approach into a Google Street View with time slider with Second Life for group-building and avatars conceptual environment, take the Film-To-3D App (to be built) from smart phone, and video these processes, and convert via App in realistic virtual earth into Google Poly (library of virtual objects) and begin to do chemical engineering newly with these objects regarding distillation, humidification, and drying 'products' or new physical objects.
Scott MacLeod: am learning it too ... here's a further resource that World Univ & Sch is building upon - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemical-engineering/ - thanks to the CC-4 licensing of OCW, and upon which we seek to offer degrees (accrediting) ... and partly in a realistic virtual earth with time. In what ways could an edX facilitate an international academic credit and degree system, Jo and everyone? (And I ask in developing World University and School, planned in ~200 countries' official / main languages as major online universities, and building from https://ocw.mit.edu/ and https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ potentially in Open edX) Thank you, Scott (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org))

300 Level Physics Lab Online: How do you do that?
Speaker(s): Stuart Lindsay, Nisha Sridharan
Am interested at World Univ & Sch in the actual-virtual, physical-digital, and for online STEM laboratories. Am thinking, brainstorming-wise, of physical Lego Robotics into an emergent educational Minecraft, Google Street View with time slider with Brick Street View (where brick refers to Lego brick). What would happen if you developed all your EE physical classroom technologies through a realistic virtual earth, eg develop circuits from a breadboard not only on the physical breadboard at a student's home, but also through Google Street View - at the atomic level even? Thank you, and best regards, Scott (sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org) ... eg in a Realistic Virtual Earth for STEM - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM?src=hashtag_click -

Great to have met you in the Mooc-It France presentation about your Instructional Prize winner, "Les Copros Verte" in the Open edX online community meeting facilitated by Ned Batchelder last Thursday -
Join the Open edX Online Meetup event today at 1 PM (EDT)! Yvain Demollière, CEO of MOOCit, will present the Open edX Instructional Prize winner, Les Copros Vertes, and all of the customizations that made this site successful. Find the event details here: https://t.co/Ff8cpToscQ pic.twitter.com/PsdiaKTvgVâ Open edX (@OpenEdX) July 9, 2020https://twitter.com/OpenEdX/status/1281212341917560832?s=20 - and - https://twitter.com/MOOCit_Fr/status/1276069953855250432?s=20 . Thank you for your excellent courses, and congratulations to Mooc-It Fr for your award! I asked and commented in the chat:
"Excellent, Yvain, and great too to see an application of the edX course interface. Brainstorming-wise, in what ways could you see eventually helping end users to actually be able to design architecturally their renovations (with regulations even) and in a Realistic Virtual Earth for Architecture - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForArchitecture?src=hashtag_click - and with this drawing example too -

Am thinking in something like Google Street View with time slider with AutoCAD architecture with even Second Life for group-building and avatars, conceptually. Thank you.
(Further brainstorming idea - collaborate too with IKEAâs home design tool too ? ⦠conceptually â¦)"
And at partner-support@edx.org's recent suggestion - and excited to find you listed here https://open.edx.org/marketplace-category/service-partners/ - I'm reaching out on behalf of wiki World UnIversity and School (which is like CC-4 https://ocw.mit.edu and https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ in its 4 languages, with Wikidata in Wikipedia's 300 languages) in seeking a service partner to help World Univ & Sch get started building courses on the Open edX platform per:
"Open edX
Service Partners
Our service partners offer a wide range of services to organizations that adopt Open edX technology to build their digital learning experiences"https://open.edx.org/marketplace-category/service-partners/
World Univ & Sch is wondering how best to create some introductory courses in Open edX from CC-4 MIT OCW in the WUaS 6 majors - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - for students who have expressed interest in this already. And WUaS seeks to be able to send out links to these WUaS courses in the 'Agenda and News for WUaS Monthly Business Meeting' by this Thursday even, or in the WUaS Minutes following Saturday's open WUaS Monthly Business Meeting (see, for example, last month's WUaS Minutes - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2020/06/june-20-2020-minutes-for-open-wuas.html?view=sidebar).
Yvain, in what ways, please, might we begin to explore these questions? In addition, WUaS seeks to develop France World Univ & Sch - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/France (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States) - from CC-4 MIT OCW in French (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/French_language) as well, and it would be great to communicate about this with time. (And with WUaS's plans to create major online universities in all ~200 countries' official / main languages, there are 29 countries in the world that have French as an official language).
Looking forward to learning how "Les Copros Verte" grows and develops. Thank you!
Sincerely, ScottI had also blogged about your presentation and this Open edX meeting in this Mars' Mission humor blog post -https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/coppersmith-barbet-spaceship-heating.html -

Hi David, (Ma),
Have you thought much about agency, philosophically, "the capacity to act, and 'agency' denotes the exercise or manifestation of this capacity" (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/agency/) and personally?
Am recalling and appreciating George Alexander MD's thinking about this (family friend, and brilliant psychiatrist, as well as Lacanian psychoanalyst), and how he with language made abstract ideas helpful and relevant to individuals with whom he was in conversation with. There are many folk philosophies that inform otherwise (Quakerism and Yoga, and perhaps some underlying Harbin philosophies too) ... that it's the divine or ego religiously conceived, that shapes people's actions and their ways of being; cultures do this too, where the group seems to inform possible actions of the individual. The idea that we have agency - free will, intentional action, here too, - or choice to decide as individuals is something that western philosophical thinking in particular seems to make possible in very unique and even sophisticated ways.
Psychiatrically, and psychologically, an individual with their own agency (not informed by a psychotherapist or psychoanalyst) might choose actions that lead to flourishing, or well-being, in conversation with someone, or on their own, because they might have engaged the idea of agency. (And perhaps they head to a good psychiatrist if they aren't making choices that lead to flourishing, or because they're making poor choices, agency-wise, leading to a lack of well-being). Language can help - both with the idea that we have agency (as one thinks about this) - and conversation can open possibilities in ideas about how to develop this. The Desiderata - - as a poem of agency? (Am appreciative too of George not giving advice, because reasoning-wise, consciously, amd philosophically, to be able to give good advice may entail being the other persons 'shoes' - which is logically impossible; appreciating that George was both conscious of this, and that he was able to express this. That said, he as an experienced clinician seemed to be able to free up people's agency, in my experience of him and understanding his thinking).
Am appreciating, too, the 'problem solving' Western analytical and philosophical approach too which George took with conversants - and regarding the human problems and issues that emerge with people. It's a very grounded - re realist - way of thinking, and focusing, too, on the symbolic (rather than the mirror) per Lacan's 3 registers. Ah language - and agency. (Lacan had a different reading of Lacan - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lacan/ - based on reading primary texts and studying Lacan in depth, but this is a fairly, and unusually, salutary article on Lacan's thinking; ah, Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy:).
What do you think about agency? How have you thought about human's capacity to act - about yours or individuals you know? Am seeking to find some examples re Cuttyhunk or DC for you, for example, to make this personally relevant - and not abstract, - and will let you know if some come to mind. (Acting to find a mate, perhaps?)
Consciousness re agency raises a whole series of other questions - and how to make these personally meaningful and relevant are fascinating questions too :)

Hi David, Ma,
Here's a slightly updated version of my email to you just now:
Have you thought much about agency, philosophically, "the capacity to act, and 'agency' denotes the exercise or manifestation of this capacity" (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/agency/) and personally?

The idea that we have agency - free will, intentional action, - or choice to decide what we want to do as individuals is something that western philosophical thinking in particular seems to make possible in very unique and even sophisticated ways.
Psychiatrically, and psychologically, an individual with their own agency (not informed by a psychotherapist or psychoanalyst) might choose actions that lead to flourishing, or well-being, in conversation with someone, or on their own, because they might have engaged the idea of agency (via words). Ma, I know from his giving a talk at Stanford someone named Raj (Chetty) - https://www.vox.com/the-highlight/2019/5/14/18520783/harvard-economics-chetty - who's an economist interested too in the poor, and also a house master at Harvard. You mentioned Raj on the phone this evening in relation to the Beacham House film you were going to watch after we hung up.
I think Raj Chetty receives my big educational project's emails, and also could probably do the math for UBI experiments to distribute a single cryptocurrency to 7.5 billion people, and significantly to alleviate poverty (since I think too he grew up in India, where there is still much poverty, sadly).
Alden, have you seen Beecham House by any chance? :)
Warmly, Scott
Hello Ann and Ma,
I hope this finds you well. How was your weekend, and how are you both? It's been hot here this weekend in the afternoons, but generally nice otherwise.
How are things going coronavirus tail end wise for you (into phase 3 in Boston and planning for physical school openings there in autumn), - or until a vaccine is found perchance? Is this pandemic mostly of an 'in case of emergency' variety I wonder (eg the threat of planes dropping biological viral agents, hypothetically, and that got too close to reality for comfort)? Just had a lovely walk around the far side of the massif overlooking Moraga past Indian valley, albeit in not quite cool enough weather.
How was the "Beecham House" Masterpiece Theatre film about the Raj in around 1795 in India, Ma? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beecham_House ... https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/specialfeatures/beecham-house-coming-to-masterpiece/ ... looks interesting but it'll be awhile before I see it. Any depictions of Yoga by any chance even? Where Angela & Victor head with Yoga, (and Iyengar too) post 1960s and in the USA is a very different world. May send this in the Yoga thread too.
Warm regards,
- Scott

Thanks for your email. WUaS is waiting to hear back from edX / Open edX and regarding particularly coding for all 7.5 billion people on the planet, regarding edX's money transfer mechanism. See the following 2 emails to the chair of the WUaS Board. Also the Lego robotics' kits involved - which Sri Lankan students may purchase - will be some of these 3 that WUaS is newly carrying - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - and which I imagine are not easy to obtain on-the-ground in Sri Lanka. Again, per Lego's recent communication with WUaS, students from Sri Lanka matriculating at WUaS can get these from India here - https://www.edutechindia.com/schools/stemeducation-2/ (or elsewhere in India here - https://education.lego.com/en-us/shop/find-distributor - which link you'll find also in the WUaS Educational Services' Bookstore). WUaS's only relationship with MIT is via the Creative Commons 4 licensing of MIT OCW, which isn't a relationship with MIT (and WUaS has explored these questions over some years now).

Big online educational project emails from this morning and yesterday to Larry V for your interest and networking even too ...
Open edX
Dear Larry,
Power's out in Canyon - will charge my smartphone phone in the car if this goes on much longer. Phone however has its own internet signal too.
Since I think the European Central Bank (and I saw recently that the IMF) are edX partner institutions ... https://www.edx.org/schools-partners.
I wonder if WUaS collaborating with Open edX in one way or another, as 'PARTNER' or 'DEVELOPER' (but with Open edX as technical team here curiously) seem to be 2 main possible roles (in their developing organization's landscape), ... and will inform WUaS's coding plans for registering WUaS matriculating students and also native speakers of all 7,117 languages as wiki-teacher-universitians - & coding for brainstorming-wise all 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata PIN # (forked from Wikidata Q-item #).
edX's digital money transfer mechanism for this for WUaS to get per student per year or similar reimbursement from countries, via edX (which they'd benefit from too) - and re even for also a WUaS envisioning of a single cryptocurrency backed by most of all 200 countries and distributed via UBI experiments to alleviate poverty would involve much new edX coding.
Waiting to hear back from Open edX about possible collaborations.
Glad Soren Juul Jorgensen is Tweeting about some of this European Central Bank-wise and potentially WUaS wise too). Maybe a different collaboration role with Open edX will emerge too.
Sincerely,
Scott

I think the changing meaning of the edX use of the word 'partner' is involved, and Anant with Ned may be able to do something regarding WUaS.

Soren Juul Jorgensen, Stanford Fellow, and who may have been the lawyer who helped WUaS Corp begin to carry Lego robotics (and good email this morning from Matt Clark in London, I think ... - and what can WUaS start selling soon to become an established STEM education reseller in some of all ~200 countries?), recently posted this -

Much of item 1 & 2's thinking is here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/coppersmith-barbet-spaceship-heating.html - after the Mars' Mission humor and history :)
Hoping you're doing well in the summer in Pgh, and that it's not too hot! (It's hot here!)
Sincerely, Scott
Rifai, thanks for your good ideas as WUaS waits to hear back from edX / Open edX and potentially CEO and MIT Professor of EECS Anant Agarwal.
Cheers, and regards, Scott

Star-Spangled Harmony (Getting Unstuck 2020 ... ) ...
https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/409618955/
Scott: I could see this program as a great example to explore composing for the (9-notes' only) A and D chanters on the Scottish Small Pipes (I think alto and tenor lines are close - will look), and even with Scratch to sheet music, - and especially for writing duets to play in particular with someone who's taking SSP lessons with me! Thanks for this programming inspiration, Karen.
Scott:
Helianth
ReportGreat, Karen, and inspiring! But isn't the alto line really the soprano line, since your programming doesn't play the Fs in bars 6 & 7? (I may be not hearing this correctly, but if so, how could I even change this, for learning purposes, I wonder?) Thank you!
Karen B:
karenb*
Report@Helianth Yesâyou're correct! It's actually soprano (top-most) and bass (bottom-most). :)
Scott:
Helianth
Report@karenb Tenor and Bass lines here seem inter-mixed! :)

M, Tym, David,
Some musical Scratch programming explorations:
1And here's Karen Brennan's recent programming of Alto and Tenor voices for the Star Spangled Banner (nice tenor line!)Star-Spangled Harmony (Getting Unstuck 2https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/409618955/(She recently became an American citizen - possibly holding dual citizenship with Canada. She's also the faculty member teaching the Getting Unstuck course below).
I could see this as a great example to explore the A and D chanters on the Scottish Small Pipes, and even to begin composing on sheet music, and in Scratch computer programming, and especially for writing duets to play in particular with Taylor who's taking SSP lessons with me!
How are you all doing this summer? Barbarously hot here yesterday, but it cooled down in the early evening in time for an incredible hour-long walking journey into Indian valley, and the far side of the massif (overlooking Moraga) to my east! Hope you're all doing well.
Am enjoying the free online 10 day Getting Unstuck Scratch programming 'summer camp' and here's today's prompt and email https://mailchi.mp/gse/getting-unstuck-2020-day-5 (& where I'm doing the projects - https://scratch.mit.edu/users/Helianth/) - and especially yesterday the 'Project visualization tool' - which is a whole new fascinating Scratch-based approach to feedback in learning this new language! Inspiring! :)

Looked up the ranges of SATB choral human voices to explore with Scottish Small Pipes' D & A chanters ...
Soprano, the highest human vocal register, extending approximately from middle C to the second A above. A voice with a range approximately from the A below middle C to the second F or G above is termed a mezzo-soprano.
https://www.britannica.com/art/soprano
In SATB four-part mixed chorus, the alto is the second highest vocal range, above the tenor and bass and below the soprano. The alto range in choral music is approximately from F3 (the F below middle C) to F5 (the F in the second octave above middle C).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alto
Alto, (Italian: âhighâ), in vocal music the register approximately between the F below middle C to the second D aboveâthe second highest part in four-part music. The word alto originally referred to the highest male voice, singing falsetto (see countertenor).
https://www.britannica.com/art/alto-vocal-range
Tenor, highest male vocal range, normally extending approximately from the second B below middle C to the G above; an extremely high voice, extending into the alto range, is usually termed a countertenor (q.v.). In instrument families, tenor refers to the instrument of more or less comparable range (e.g., tenor horn)
https://www.britannica.com/art/tenor-vocal-range
Normally, the baritone parts are written for a range of A to f â²
https://www.britannica.com/art/baritone-vocal-range
In vocal music, the bass is the lowest male voice, with a typical range from the second E below middle C to F⯠above; the basso profundo is low and rich, while the basso cantante (âsinging bassâ) is lighter and more lyric.

Just shared this with you, Christoph Bareitzer, in Academia.edu: "Thanks for your interesting thinking about virtual violence in video games. What sparked my interest in particular was this
"What Do Players of Video Games Experience When Enacting Virtual Violence?" video -
https://lt.org/publication/what-do-players-video-games-experience-when-enacting-virtual-violence .
I haven't been able to see a bibliography of this "Gewalt im Computerspiel ..." paper yet regarding whether you cite Tom Boellstorff's "Coming of Age in Second Life" - since he may have spent as much time in SL doing participant observation, as you did with your video games' research. My book "Naked Harbin Ethnography" seeks to explore ethnographically questions of actual-virtual emotion in a related way, as does seeking to facilitate a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs for actual-virtual ethnographic comparison, and a related realistic virtual earth (as well as a new social science method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy). How might we best communicate further about your work, your upcoming project in your video and all of this? Will email you as well."
In downloading, your "Gewalt_im_Computerspiel._Facetten_eines.pdf" (und Ich kann auch Deutsch sprechen und lesen), I don't see a bibliography, however.
I've been active in the Tourism Studies' Working Group at UC Berkeley in many of these regards, and with respect to your interests in heritage and museums as well - http://tourismstudies.org/People.htm#SM . Here's a fairly recent talk there - "Harbin & Avatar Bots: Robotics & Tourism" - on my actual-virtual field site, Harbin Hot Springs in northern California (have either of you ever visited Harbin?) -http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/02/indian-fig-uc-berkeley-harbin-avatar.html .
Am also interested, in the creation of a single realistic virtual earth for everything (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth with TensorFlow and Translate, and with Second Life re group-buildability and avatar bots, but realistic ones, - like Samsung Neons or 'artificial humans' ), and especially in facilitating the development of all museums ever as virtual museums - all over all time in all languages (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Museums and https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForMuseums?src=hashtag_click ). And, Sharon, here's an Oxford related 'brainstorming' blog post - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/caribbean-reef-squid-art-into-robots-as.html.
Sharon, - interesting Isle of Skye and Gaelic revival ethnological focus too! - http://www.carmah.berlin/people/macdonald-sharon/. World Univ & Sch seeks to be in A) all 7,117 languages and B) in all 200 countries - as major online A) wiki schools, and B) online universities emerging from best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare in its 4 languages for free-to-students' online university and high school degrees.
I wrote an University of Edinburgh Celtic & Scottish Studies M.Sc. paper on visiting virtual St. Kilda regarding 2 networks (UNESCO WHS and internet), and as a nascent virtual place in 2004, which paper is also in Academia.edu - https://www.academia.edu/1243940/Physical_and_Online_St._Kilda_A_Comparison_of_Senses_of_Place. Are you a Scot, by any chance? I've studied in Edinburgh for 2 separate years (at Fettes College in 1977-78, and at the Univ. of Edinburgh in 2003-04), and have studied too at the University of Munich (LMU) in 1981-82, through a Reed College program in Munich.
Again, Christoph and Sharon, how might we best communicate further about your work, your upcoming project in your video and all of this? And in what ways might we even explore collaborating in the development of a realistic virtual earth and realistic virtual Harbin, and especially regarding emotions ethnographically? I appreciate in many ways the thinking (ethnographically especially) in your video, Christoph.

Thank you for your interest in my work. Actually, the Gewalt im Computerspiel book has a bibliography, you can download the full book here: https://www.transcript-verlag.de/978-3-8376-3559-1/gewalt-im-computerspiel/?number=978-3-8394-3559-5And yes, sure, my work profits greatly from Tom Boellstorffâs approaches, including his book on Second Life. The book will also come out as a shorter, English monograph with Cambridge University Press this year.
Best regards,Christoph

Thank you for your reply. I noticed, in reading your 14 page Buchvorschau von "Gewalt in Computerspiel" ('Violence in Computer Games' is my working translation for this), the parallels with a) your opening paragraph, b) Tom Boellstorff's opening paragraphs in CoAiSL - and c) the opening paragraphs in my book "Naked Harbin Ethnography." Great. Thank you for the bibliography too. Und danke für das Buch selbst, wie es scheint! (The paper version of my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" has an extensive bibliography, but the Kindle version doesn't, interestingly - https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity).
I'm curious if the very young and beginning Academic Press at World University and School's Bookstore (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - & Robotics' store too) could carry both the German and English versions of your book even. (In a parallel vein, although WUaS has just begun to carry 3 Lego Robotics' kits (but not yet as re-seller or with inventory, only as a carrier), WUaS Press's online bookstore, eventually on-the-ground too and in all ~200 countries' main languages, would be interested in developing relationships with Cambridge University Press, and https://www.transcript-verlag.de/ - and in carrying your book, plus.
In a related vein, would you have interest in teaching, or even co-teaching, a course called something like "Emotions in Computer Play" or "Emotions in Computer Games" at some point - at best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School? Here are some examples of what we might build from -https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/anthropology/21a-350j-cultures-of-computing-fall-2011/ and from https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/anthropology/ and into edX even.
Congratulations on publishing with Cambridge University Press especially! (UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus Nelson HH Graburn is a professor of mine, and an alumnus of Cambridge as well). Are you looking at questions of robotics anthropologically in relation to "Gewalt in Computerspiel" questions. Here are the slides from a UC Berkeley talk I gave in 2018 - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/02/indian-fig-uc-berkeley-harbin-avatar.html - regarding Harbin and robotics. And here's a video plus related virtual anthropological resources regarding online WUaS Medical Schools - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/11/pacific-yew-world-univ-and-sch-medicine.html - with even tele-robotic surgery, for example (and where Lego Robotics in a realistic virtual earth / Harbin would help learners from an early age become playfully knowledgeable about robotics).

Hi Ma,
Thanks too for affirming our big educational project is carrying Lego robotics when we spoke.
Will Tweet today about this Mars mission, people / learners making Lego robotics' spaceships and rovers, and creating a realistic virtual universe for Lego so we can all travel with, virtually and physically - before mid-July :)
Fascinating to go to Mars - again.
Love, Scott
When did we first land a spacecraft on Mars? The Viking landers were the first spacecraft to land on Mars in the 1970s. Viking 1 and Viking 2 each had both an orbiter and a lander. On July 20, 1976 the Viking 1 Lander separated from the Orbiter and touched down on the surface of Mars

Ma,
Air conditioning? ( https://sites.dartmouth.edu/dujs/2016/02/17/a-journey-to-the-center-of-the-sun/ ?) In the space ship? ON the way to the sun - but when? And a heater, in the spaceship, on Mars' mission with people in the 2030s possibly? (And a plan with robots on earth and other planets to manage the nuclear waste even if part of this, and re 200,000 year storage & geology questions).
Will we be still talking then thanks to aging reversal and genetic engineering? O my goodness! :)

edX Edge
Hi Sri, All,
Brilliant, and thanks, Rifai. (This email correspondence continues from https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/07/oriental-dwarf-kingfisher-mit-solve.html).
From this it looks like WUaS can sign on newly as a university, and experiment with course building 'on the edge' from here:https://edge.edx.org/
https://studio.edge.edx.org
Am an appreciator of edX programmer in Brookline, Massachusetts, Ned Batchelder's thinking and modus operandi - way of relating - (in your 2nd link).
Found too: What is edX Edge, and how does it differ from edX?What is the difference between edX and edge? edX is the home of MOOCs and open to the world while edge is open to on-campus courses. The platform technology is the same, edX/open edX. Usually, we develop on edge to experiment with to them move to the MOOC platform
AND - https://wikis.utexas.edu/display/MOOC/About+edX+edge+-+FAQs
What is the difference between Open edX, edx.org and edX Edge?
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-Open-edX-edx-org-and-edX-Edge
Rifai, and All - I'm in communication with Lego robotics' people re - https://education.lego.com/en-us/shop/find-distributor - and a distributor has to be in a country to get Lego to people there. And it looks like Sri Lanka doesn't have a distributor. Will include you in related emails. (Marisol - some countries in south and central America may not have distributors as well). In seeking to make Lego robotics' kits available to matriculating WUaS students for engineering and science degrees, WUaS has recently become a carrier, but not yet a reseller, in the US only. And WUaS is exploring other countries (there are about 130 out of 206), where there aren't distributors. Stay tuned.
Best regards, Scott
* request opening an edX technical account to create World Univ & Sch's own courses
Dear edX Edge,
At the suggestion of a colleague, I'm writing to request opening an edX technical account to create World Univ & Sch's own courses. And my colleague would be interested in working out something using edX studio with this account as well, and potentially in 2 non-English languages. With this in mind, I just opened a personal Edge edX account https://edge.edx.org/u/WorldUnivAndSch.
I found this edX email address here - https://wikis.utexas.edu/display/MOOC/About+edX+edge+-+FAQs - but World Univ & Sch is a separate startup online 'edge' university, planned in each of all ~200 countries and their official and main languages, and offering online degrees emerging from best STEM CC-4 OCW in its 4 languages (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ and https://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm) to begin.
Thank you.

Just shared this with you, Christoph, in Academia.edu: "Thanks for your interesting thinking about virtual violence in video games.

Thank you for your reply. I noticed, in reading your 14 page Buchvorschau von "Gewalt in Computerspiel" ('Violence in Computer Games' is my working translation for this), the parallels with a) your opening paragraph, b) Tom Boellstorff's opening paragraphs in CoAiSL - and c) the opening paragraphs in my book "Naked Harbin Ethnography." Have you "walked" down the Harbin road "4 miles" to "amble" around Middletown, California, here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ as a beginning realistic virtual earth in Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth (accessible too from https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ), - and where I hope Street View will encompass video games as well - and where Street View works in a beginning way with Lego Bricks, too (re above).~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~
~ http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html
I'm seeking to create NOT a Harbin Hot Springs' video game - and not for a new book entitled something like "Peace in Video Games" oder "Frieden in Computerspiel" - but rather a developing realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs as field site for actual-virtual ethnographic comparison, and potentially drawing significantly on the findings of your research too, Christoph (and via - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy). More later about some of this.

Lego robotics -
Dear Matt and Sri and Marisol (and All),
Thanks for your reply, Matt. Some further brainstorming questions here.
Since a reseller has to be in a country to get Lego to people there, what would you suggest for getting the Lego robotics' kits that World Univ & Sch is newly carrying - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - to WUaS students this autumn to English speaking students who might live in Sri Lanka, Spanish, and Quechua language countries? There don't appear to be any Lego resellers in Sri Lanka or in Uruguay for example (and Marisol here is an instructor of Quechua and Spanish at Stanford). And it looks like Sri Lanka doesn't have a distributor, especially. Sri (M. Rifai above - with his new SriLanka@worlduniversityandschool.org email address) and I have been communicating much in recent weeks, and we've talked about finding 1000 Sri Lankan students this autumn (high achieving 'toppers'), a percentage of whom will be online engineering, science and EECS undergraduate majors at WUaS in Sri Lanka and in English (- and not in the Sinhala or Tamil languages yet) - and potentially taking edX courses (emerging, for ex., from https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/). How might WUaS best get Lego robotics' kits to Sri Lankans this autumn?
I count 86 countries on the Lego distribution list - https://education.lego.com/en-us/shop/find-distributor - out of 206 countries (per the Summer Olympics that would have happened soon were it not for the coronavirus pandemic), so about 120 countries aren't on this distributors' list. Since the WUaS Educational Services' Store now carrying Lego Robotics' kits would like to become a US reseller in the future, as we develop our web site's store with machine learning and machine translation for all ~200 countries especially, is there a way WUaS could please somehow get on a Lego list of being interested in becoming a reseller in these 130 remaining countries, for example? And brainstorming-wise, if getting on this list might be possible, could Julian Dumitrascu (with WUaS) somehow become the head of Europe WUaS Educational Services' Store (with America and Asia WUaS Educational Services' Store being the other 2 regions) for other countries in Europe not on the Lego distributors' list?
And since Sri (M Rifai) in Sri Lanka has been translating WUaS into the Sinhala (and Tamil) languages there - and it's possible Marisol could help find Quechua and Spanish speakers to help further the machine translation WUaS is developing - perhaps they will facilitate the WUaS Sinhala language, Quechua and Spanish WUaS language translation aspects with regards to making Lego Robotics' kits available first in the USA to speakers of these languages here; And Julian and Nicolai too for Romanian speakers in the USA too?
(Julian and Nicolai in Romania: as you probably have read, it looks like prospective Romanian students who speak English and who are interested in matriculating at WUaS this autumn online will be able to get Lego robotics' kits for their engineering, science and EECS undergraduate degrees from an upcoming Lego distributor in Romania. Good news!
Matt and All, for your information, the WUaS Educational Services' Store is part of the WUaS Corporation / Press and a parallel legal entity to World Univ & Sch itself. The WUaS Corporation is licensed in California as a for profit general stock company, planned also in all ~200 countries' and in all 7,117 known living languages (like 501 c 3 tax exempt World Univ & Sch) - with remarkable potential synergies.
These are WUaS's 2 legal entities: worlduniversityandschool.org

There are a few other people in this email in other countries who may help find matriculating students for WUaS this autumn, and which students would get Lego robotics' kits regarding WUaS home robotics - https://twitter.com/hashtag/WUaSHomeRobotics?src=hashtag_click.
Thank you, Matt, and looking forward to hearing your thoughts about getting Lego robotics' kits to Sri Lankans in Sri Lanka in particular.
I think WUaS could become a remarkable growth story for Lego robotics!
Regards, Scott
