Cascade red fox: Oregon - Traveling to Wisdom Creek Ranch in NE Oregon, from Cuttyhunk island, Masschusetts
Nice to talk the other evening Annie (from Indiana)!
GREETINGS from North Dakota! Am just west of Bismarck ND and could arrive at the ranch on Monday evening ... Looking forward to seeing you! Anything I can do to help? Anything I can bring from parts east?
Warmly, Scott
Ma,
How did you sleep last night? Slept pretty well here camping in car in north Dakota ...
Am wondering if somehow I could meet my wife to be in your beautiful home in Pittsburgh some holiday (Xmas?) ... A MD resident in Pgh who went to college (undergraduate) elsewhere at a high achieving University, possibly active in the UU Church or Quaker Meeting in Pgh, and seeking a husband (daughter or granddaughter even of MDs you know in Pgh?)
I could arrive at Annie's tomorrow evening in eastern Oregon.
Google Maps says I'm ~18:45 minutes from Union Oregon ... North Dakota and Montana are big being states to drive through ahead ...
How to think about Beethoven's 9 symphonies on CD which I'm playing much of - as thinking pieces (as masterpieces too)? I used Google Voice to ask about the 9th, the 1st and the 2nd and learned interesting tidbits which I had heard decades ago (and new ideas too ... "mark it uniquely as Beethoven's work, notably the frequent use of sforzandi, as well as sudden shifts in tonal centers that were uncommon for ..." ... Something about fate too! )
... But coming back to PM Stuart Liddell's listening and feeling idea, and not thinking, I'm listening and feeling them ... Takes me too to my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project ... And listening and feeling therein in the Now moment :)
Love, Scott
Text message yesterday :)
Nice to talk Ma! Drove on abt a mile from the North Dakota rest area with lightning flashing, EXITED on Eldridge Road exit 251, turned R, found a side road on R immediately with tree wind break that said Dead End .. drove along a corn field a ways back toward rest area, turned around, and now by the tree break, will camp here probably :) Sleep well :)

Whoeee ... Just past thru the Badlands of North Dakota, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park of a truck stop too as overlook over The Badlands Soon after on the road, came to the hole on the wall exit called 'Home on the Range'
Asked Google Voice to read aloud the lyrics (below) to this folk song from childhood, but it couldn't (yet), remembering
"Where seldom is heard a DISCOURAGING WORD and the skies are not cloudy all day ..."
AND this gave me further insight into frontier psychology and freedom, - and so close to the Badlands ... Hmmm
Curious how 'Frontier Psychiatry' online will differ now from City Psychiatry .... Talk therapy with Smart Phones ??? :) (Appreciating family friend George L Alexander MD re smart talk therapy for his clients) ... And would online psychiatry with Avatar bots be potentially free ? ... Yes at WUaS :)
Warmly, Scott
O give me a home where the buffaloes roamWhere the deer and the antelope playWhere seldom is heard a discouraging wordAnd the skies are not cloudy all day
Home, home on the rangeWhere the deer and the antelope playWhere seldom is heard a discouraging wordAnd the skies are not cloudy all day
Where the air is so pure and the zephyrs so freeAnd the breezes so balmy and lightThat I would not exchange my home on the rangeFor all of the cities so bright
Home, home on the rangeWhere the deer and the antelope playWhere seldom is heard a discouraging wordAnd the skies are not cloudy all day
How often at night when the heavens are brightWith the light of the glittering starsI stand there amazed and I ask as I gazeDoes their glory exceed that of ours?
Home, home on the rangeWhere the deer and the antelope playWhere seldom is heard a discouraging wordAnd the skies are not cloudy all day

Greetings from Montana where I just crossed over the state line from ND on I-94 ... 100F hot - but no western Forest Fires yet :) ... 15 hours' drive left to you, Ann, to Wisdom Creek Ranch :) See you soon
Fondly, Scott

Driving UP to Continental Divide and not getting the 44.0 +avg gas mileage otherwise ... Leaving Glendives MT up up up :)
*
Hi Ann and Ma,
Greetings from industrial western Billings Montana (pop. 109,000 - and fairly central in the state) as I near Oregon. Hoping to get to the ranch tomorrow evening Annie! Maps says it's 12 hours from here. Will likely car camp again this evening. (Driving west Massachusetts across the USA has been fun). How are you? I may head back to the SF Bay Area Wednesday Aug 11 :) will seek too to call later this evening :)
Warmly, Scott
*
Hi Ann and Ma,
Drove into Idaho - through amazing Craters of the Moon national park, a rift or fissure of volcanoes spewing forth beginning about 15000 years ago, with an astounding charred landscape - eastern Idaho. Gas prices increased from about 3:09 avg to 3.99 avg, roughly ... And fuel efficiency jumped from around 35 mpg to low 50s mpg ... Must being going downhill after North Dakota and Montana's rise to something like the Continental Divide ...
'rode hard and long' yesterday ... Camped in western Montana, in what turned out to be agricultural land with many large irrigation systems, somewhere between Silver Star and Twin Bridges not too far from Dillon ... 5+ hours to the ranch ... Wisdom Creek Ranch in NE Oregon ... How did it get it's name Annie ? :) See you soon!
Warmly, Scotty http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Oregon :)
*
Ann (& Ma),
Just turned off I-84 in Oregon onto the road for Medical Springs /Haines (near Baker City) coming from the east and Idaho ...
See you in about 30 minutes Annie! :)
Warmly, Scotty

Greetings, Ma, from the porch at the ranch, in beautiful NE Oregon ... just woke up from sleeping (pretty well) outside (in my car, which was open) ... walked up with Annie to check the water flow near the upper field beyond the main barn, with its own cut lumber wood shelter, then into the garden with Annie (a bit overgrown, but with many many vegetable), where I got some delicious raspberries (a week past their prime, but ever so good), then went over to talk with Annie as she was picking kale (but not green beans since when wet with morning dew, they get a rust, so she picks them in the afternoon when they are dry) ... then back to the ranch house and we cleaned the kale in a blue bucket of water from insects, and brown spots too, ... so nice to visit with Annie in this ranch which is teaming with life - genetics - from the moment I drove in up the driveway. Connecting with my cousin, Annie - Yay! Yesterday evening, we walked down across the road to see a stand of trees where 2 or 3 had evidence of bark beetles ... the Red Turpentine beetle, the western bark beetle (but couldn't find any in their larvae or maggot form), their different sized males and females, and ips (a related disease producing insects), also ants, and similar ... and Annie with hammer and chisel, and naturalist-wise, peeled away bark to find these insects, ... in such a beautiful and otherwise very healthy stand of Ponderosa pines ... quite a treat to be in this stand of magnificent trees that your brother had the vision to cultivate and create ... the whole Wisdom Creek Ranch property is bursting forth with these large beautiful trees and stands ... thanks to Ted's planning, and now Annie's tree ranching (and almost, my word, Taoist - non-action - ie she and Ted didn't really want to cut these trees ... so they are so abundant and healthy and flourishing). It's a different awareness of reality, natural reality, evolutionary biological reality ... that Annie lives intimately in and with ... working all the time, so knowledgeable about everything here on this ranch ... ... So good to see her, and Tim (who seems ... somehow ... and has often seemed so), ... and they seem however to get along well, having been married since 1998 or 1999 ... The ranch is beautiful and flourishing, (the house is a bit messy) ... and it's so nice to talk with my cousin, and connect ... Will we continue to connect in generations to come, if aging reversal genetic drug therapies are developed? I think so

Hi Taylor,
Good playing Taylor! Apologies for the HotSpot wifi signal quality (and too bad there was no room at the Motel 6 in Elkhart IN re lack of that internet signal for our lesson too!) ... But our improvisation with conversation for learning SSP was good, I think ... how was it for you?
Would love to read, if you'd care to share, a highly succinct daily journal of your Scottish Small Pipes' practicing re further focusing for learning ... both regarding our meeting, as well as where you head as exploration ... and writing-wise ...
I hope my being in travel mode, and communication-wise, was newly edifying perchance, and workable. On with listening and feeling, building from playing relatively slowly, almost hypnotically or trance-like, to up to tempo intact technically and from memory :) I just heard the beginning of the lesson recording come thru successfully ( after a 20 minutes delay - so it's a resource too :)
Musical cheers, Scott

Thanks again for the lesson.
A journal is a pretty good idea. It'll give me a paper trail of my progress and allow me to give you a report of what gets done each practice session, not to mention keep track of my thoughts.
See you next week!

8/6/21:
Main focus today was the Little Spree. The Urlar, Urlar Doubling, First Variation, and Taorluath Variation were all covered. I started out measuring my bag pressure steadiness on the tuner for the first few minutes. I then moved on to listening to the recording of Donald MacLeod playing The Little Spree, playing along with the recording, stopping to play without the recording, and repeating whenever the pacing didn’t seem right. I took note of MacLeod’s holding of “and” and “long” notes, as both give the tune its distinct sway, almost mirroring the walk of a clumsy drunk. The placement of these “and” and “long” notes aren’t immediately obvious in the score, making careful listening especially important in this tune. The temptation to put "snap" into some of the dotted quarter notes is strong, but the pacing doesn't call for that until the Taorluath. Getting back into Taorluaths was tricky as it had been a while since I played them in the context of a piobaireachd variation; slow, deliberate playing may be necessary until I can get up to the proper tempo.
The last few minutes focused on The Cameronian Rant, largely listening to Neil Clark's rendition on the practice chanter on youtube and very slowly playing the music, careful to note placement of dotted notes.
Next practice session will include a review of the above and explore the Crunluath variation in The Little Spree and additional practice of The Cameronian Rant.

Super, Taylor! This is great, thank you!
Perhaps a further focus on #s 2&3 from - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm ?
At first on Thursday I wondered if you might want to blog about this - and even re somehow sharing inspiration in the charting of Scottish Small Piping learning goals (blogger.com) ... Re writing too ... Or focusing your inspirational ideas about this
And further listening and feeling come to mind too from Stuart (and his second video recording).
Pretty open-ended ... And re what might be fun for you in developing a learning conversation with your Scottish Small Piping :)
Cheers, Scott

The journaling gives me structure and helps make my goals clearer for sure.Today I explored the crunluath variations on top of the previous variations, repeating the learning techniques from the previous practice regarding listening and playing along with Donald MacLeod. I practiced slowly; hopefully I’ll be able to speed up the crunluaths to give it a better sway eventually. I find it interesting that MacLeod doesn’t (won’t?) play the A Mach; he doesn’t elaborate on why that is. I plan to try the A Mach sometime before the next lesson.
More slow deliberate playing was done today with the Cameronian Rant too with a heavy focus on sight reading. I may use a metronome next time and see if I can keep up with a steady rhythm. Taylor

Taylor, Great! How best to bring tunes to memory (for mastery learning even) - to skip the 'thinking' aspect of reading music (per Stuart) - and for listening and feeling and playing expressively anew ? And extraordinary Piobaireachd playing may be an open horizon playing feeling and listening-wsie compared with Stuart LIddell's extraordinary (for) playing of Light Music ... (learning Piobaireachd directly from John D Burgess's playing - extraordinarily for me - may be a precursor building block ... re The Desperate Battle and his other Piobaireachd online:)I think I heard from Ian Whitelaw too (in addition to Donald MacLeod) that the A Mach isn't played in The Little Spree ... glad you're going to try exploratority.

Got my small pipes out as I woke up from camping by the side of the road near the Eldridge Road exit 251 in North Dakota ... exploring bringing The Cameronia Rant further to memory ... and with 'bite' ... like working with a horse (Stuart's metaphor)??? ... quite a new feeling and listening exploration (re my own journal, and Yoga modeling ... bringing it 'in' re memorizing to play it expressively and newly - and with expressive freedom, ... and Yoga A&V's too is much about freedom:) .. and regarding Stuart Liddell's Ceol Beag amazing playing inspiration!

All's well; lovely day; going to bed soon. Sounds like you're making good headway. Love, Ma

You, too!A little challenge with checking into a Motel 6 ... Seeking to get the WUaS Minutes out tomorrow with decent wifi ... 24 hours driving to Union Oregon via new route ... 8 hours per day ... See Annie on Monday :)

Good morning Ma. This was the grossest motel 6 with grotesques in the Check in process too. Manager, a kind of Americana grotesque herself, made me book newly thru their website in lobby taking ~45 minutes ... Coming out more expensive than the $54 I saw on Google Maps (rather 72 ) ... but I slept fairly well, laying flat, & got a shower .. . And with decent internet will get WUaS Minutes out :) (not going to write this up Raymond Carver or Flannery O'Connor wise :) ... Manager could benefit from an online psychiatrist even :) Sending love, Scott

Arboretum of University of Wisconsin, Madison
Dear David and Michael,Nice to talk with you Michael at the beautiful Univ of Wisconsin Arboretum today -F Aug 6 2021https://arboretum.wisc.edu/about-us/people/. And nice to e-meet you here David especially. And great to touch base with you about CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School and a prospective virtual arboretum, and Actual-Virtual, Physical Digital genetic related resources - potentially in a single realistic virtual earth. This would develop in a single realistic virtual earth, for plants and genetics too, in something like Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, TensorFlow AI - AT THE CELLULAR & MOLECULAR LEVELS too - and to which we researchers and everyone could add via photos, videos and a Film-To-3D App, yet to be created. With these digitized library of virtual plants and objects post Google Poly' library of virtual objects' which just closed), we'd do further research, for example, genetic engineering, and for arboretum goals and species' preservation too.
By a realistic virtual earth, have a look at my emerging Actual-Virtual, Physical- Digital Ethnographic field site in Northern California andwalk' down the road toward Middletown, CA ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg (accessible from ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~) Harbin Hot Springs is my Actual-Virtual Physical-Digital anthropological field site, and a long term Ethnographic research project, interoperation with a single realistic virtual earth.

Checking in re: Thursday. Still available? Here’s a typical reel tune set the session plays (played by a different session). This is roughly the tempo the Auburn group plays:https://youtu.be/j0mUQcpLTHk

I’ll keep listening.
See you soon!

Hi, Taylor,

Explore playing your small pipes with this Youtube - and SSP chanter key exploration-wise too?
Liking the group dynamics, the sound, and the variety of instruments too ... and the sociality and integration regarding weaving all their musical lines or voices together ...
Style-wise, Scottish v Irish session-music? ... rounded yes for Irish music ... & also searched on "irish vs scottish session music - sound & style difference"
"While both Irish and Scottish music are melodic at heart, Scottish music seems more straight-ahead and rhythm-driven; Irish music more punctuated with ornamental trills and grace notes. ... But making room for these trills tends actually to slow Irish tempos. "The difference is not that obvious to the listener," he says"
http://scottalarik.com/index.php?page=stories&category=01--Featured_Stories&archives=show&display=14
I might add to the above that Scottish grace notes add their own different dynamic to 'session music' - and how far further could we go into characterizing these musics' differences and similarities for further musical playing, learning, and explorations?

Getting car work done in Pgh today ... so, about a lesson again tomorrow evening, - while Chicago is 7 hours away, ... and 10 hours away would be half way from Chicago IL to St. Paul MN, I may seek to find a way to meet, while on the road, and 8 or 9 hours west of Pgh ... please let me get back to you ... I'll seek to make this happen, if possible ... but am not sure if I can find a WiFi connection and space to give a lesson tomorrow Th 8/5/21 at 7pm ET
Regarding piping as a meditation, and listening and feeling to one's bagpipe chanter and drones, per Stuart Liddell, I find the expression on Stuart's face here great -https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1419829432722894851?s=20

:) What do you think ? Is Stuart's listening and feeling to his own piping (and his audience too perhaps) creating or generating this expression of (transforming) serenity in his face? (And regarding questions too of eliciting 'loving bliss' neurophysiology brain chemistry naturally even - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology) - http://scottmacleod.com/LovingBlissPractices.htm & http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/loving%20bliss - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/neurophysiology ?) ... And is Stuart eliciting serenity or wholeness differentially from eliciting loving bliss - emotions-wise - and how could one explore this further for a range of great feelings ... and via listening too ... and per his teaching as well? :)
Cheers, ScottMy two lessons in video recording with Stuart Liddell are here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes - in some of these regards.

Piobaireachd ?
Is there an opportunity to head from PM Donald MacLeod's beautiful lyrical Cantairreachd singing to playing Piobaireachd or Ceol Mor as extraordinarily as Stuart Liddell plays light music or Ceol Beag ... and by learning from Stuart's thinking (re non-thinking:) about playing bagpipe music :)?
(While I think Stuart advocates getting rid of using sheet music, even as (a kind of blocking technology of sorts) - by memorizing the piping music - and thus eliminating an intermediary between one's music-making and free natural expression in music-making, I don't think he's advocating eliminating bagpiping on BAGPIPES themselves too, :) regarding another intermediary between making music freely ... :) ... and by the same token, one could potentially make as extraordinary music as Stuart playing Ceol Beag on bagpipes BY reading sheet music too ... I'd posit, philosophically, or thinking-wise :) ... just saying that Stuart's music making is extraordinary ... still haven't come into conversation with him about riffing for example with - AAAhttps://youtu.be/DNAmXz8kc6I - post Gordon Duncan's AC DC and rock and roll energy bagpiping explorations :)
The Little Spree, if I can find a WiFi signal with workable physical space, on Thursday?
ScottBut I come back to these Guidelines - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - and regarding not being a robot, but also learning from great teaching ... "10 Think for yourself.
Don’t become a robot, but don’t dismiss what you’re taught."

Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna): Avatar bots emerging ... talking ... and for genealogy platforms? * Google Earth Image - & Genealogy Avatar Bots (of our ancestors), * And agreed, - and yet from within the Google Street View ecosystem perspective, with
Mark,
Thanks so much for your kind hospitality, your connecting in Maine recently, and thanks too for 'getting it' esp ... for your understanding (and familially!) ... re World Univ & Sch for example! I Greatly appreciate our 'family' visit ... and how you made it happen so superbly ... thank you ... Looking forward to chatting soon, whether on the phone or in video conferencing ... and staying in communication in email too.
Regarding brainstorming about pictures of our ancestors associated with MacLeod places in (the so cool) Google Earth Pro ... and even beginning eventually to talk ... am wondering too whether the cinematic mp4 below could be part of this initially for a sense of 'physical' presence through movement, for example too, as these images emerge, hypothetically, from Google Earth 'talking' via chat bot software too in the future!
Google Earth Pro and what you created are very cool ... I was almost going to share these MacLeod places with you, my mother and Sandy ... but was a little uncertain whether I could or not per what you said yesterday ... even after deleting you and your Dad and the other person ... (some sort of CC licensing could help in some related situations, I'd think!)
But I think people would or will have fun creating emerging talking Avatar bots on genealogy platforms ... in brand new ways ...
... as would they have fun EVEN editing in traits genetically from their ancestors into their own genomes as mathematical sequences even re computing in the future ... and possibly on these genealogy platforms ...
A university degree in 'History, Computer Science and Biology' specifically for genetic genealogy too could be fascinating to develop at World Univ & Sch - and also especially to teach to people - with time. At the Bachelor and PhD levels too at WUaS? Let's explore :)
So great to visit, and thank you so much, Mark!
Warm regards, Scott

'Brown Chadbourne places to Mark MacLeod for learning'
Brown Chadbourne places to cousin Mark MacLeod for Scott GK MacLeod's learning of Google Earth Pro
but the email share option I found only opens in Apple Mail and I don't think my Apple ID password is working (and Apple is byzantine in getting it sorted out)! :) Go figure re sharing Google Earth Pro
Scott
Google Earth streams the world over wired and wireless networks enabling users to virtually go anywhere on the planet and see places in photographic detail. This is not like any map you have ever seen. This is a 3D model of the real world, based on real satellite images combined with maps, guides to restaurants, hotels, entertainment, businesses and more. You can zoom from space to street level instantly and then pan or jump from place to place, city to city, even country to country.
Get Google Earth. Put the world in perspective.

My thinks we are a long ways away from avatar bots. No offense but your .mp4 'video' is pretty unimpressive.

Thanks, Mark
And attached are two tests ... Thanks again so much!
And agreed, - and yet from within the Google Street View ecosystem perspective, with the upload-able image behind it (or or .mp4 video perspective), this is the first I've seen of a beginning almost-avatar in Google (Google in my experience hasn't done much at all with avatars ... ) ... and it can't talk either!!!! :) since I haven't seen any lip movements on Google platforms ... except perhaps in the Youtube (also Google) animation of Max Ehrmann 'reading' his Desiderata at the end (around slide 90) of my UC Berkeley Anthropology talk

in December 2020 - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/12/doubledays-hummingbird-cynanthus.html (which might even be able to be saved as a .mp4 file from Youtube) ... Glad nevertheless that that .mp4 just popped up, perhaps as a kind of seed, ... and agreed too ... am not very impressive from Google (at this stage)!

Dear Sue (Ma, Larry, Pin, Tym, Sandy, LIllian, All),
I need to make working - for connecting - a really great realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs - think Google Street View with Time Slider - a realistic virtual Scotland too as well as New Zealand ... and for Pittsburghers - soon! :) .... https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthforTraveling?src=hashtag_click ... for the experience of visiting and traveling to, interacting in, and conversing with people there, these places from Pittsburgh :) ...
Mini family reunion this past weekend with MacLeods in Maine - thank you Mark MacLeod!!! (and with all offspring of Kenneth and Margaret MacLeod, our paternal grandparents) - was even better face-to-face in person, than it could have been virtually, but I would seek to create aspects of this too virtually further in the future ! :))
We've had one go around with everybody creating virtual experiences - due to the non-SARS CoV2 non-epidemic, and 15 months of self-quarantine - and got sort of a bit further with group video conferencing ... but I'm optimistic we can travel away from Pittsburgh, and celebrate in new great ways with family ... virtually, and extraordinarily, with time! :))
Warmly, Scott
Some related ideas, and pics, and I hope to blog today a conversation between Mark and myself further about some of these questions, and for genetic genealogy and related platforms too - !
