We interrupt your regularly scheduled program to bring you the ranting and ravings of a certain Culo Girl.

Frank Cho has been particularly busy watching lots of porn as of late, so I will be taking over his responsibilities. He keeps telling me it’s for reference, but I can’t imagine needing reference for 6 hours at a time, locked in one’s room, being reason enough… Anyhow, let’s let Frank get back to his porn and you can catch up with me on the low down with Big Wow! ComicFest 2013!

It’s been another year, and another amazing Big Wow! ComicFest comes and goes. It’s interesting anticipating an event all year long and then find yourself enjoying it so much, that time slips by and the show is over before you know it. I wish I had a Tardis so I could go back in time and re-live every moment again and again. I must say that Big Wow! continues to top itself with each passing year, and this year literally blew the doors off of the building. Why? Because we had freakin’ STAN “THE MAN” LEE there, that’s why!

I arrived in San Jose Friday night and headed straight to the usual dinner spot at PF Changs where all of the guests go to mingle with one another. I swear it feels like a family reunion each time I go there. It was awesome to see all of the friends and familiar faces like Steve Morger, Steve Wyatt, Bill Cox (of Comic Art Fans), Neil Adams, Joel & Jason Adams, Michael Golden, Buzz, Tatiana, Humberto Ramos, Ted, and more. From there, I hung out at the host hotel bar before deciding to call it a night. What I forgot was that I still needed to work on the scale mail for the bikini bottoms of Red Sonja. I ended up hanging out in Riddle’s room until 4 am, working on scale mail and chatting about the con, costumes, panels, and whatnot. It was loads of fun, but I eventually returned to my room to continue working. In total, it was 72 complete hours without sleep on working on the costume.

Saturday morning was spent on adding the finishing touches to the Red Sonja costume that I was going to wear for Franks panel, “Figure Drawing with Frank Cho”. As my luck would have it, there were a few wardrobe malfunctions involved with the costume. A major one being the bra being under incredible strain to stay on. You see, I used a B cup bra as the base to create the massive underboob and sideboob that Frank depicts his Sonja of having. I walked through what looked like an upscale business convention that was just getting out, to get to the panel. I’d say that’s a bit better than the religious convention I walked through the year before. I don’t think they were happy with me last year, hehe. I arrived at the panel a bit late due to this but immediately got into a pose for the audience and we began. Half way through the panel, Frank gets up and takes my axe away from me. To my right, I see Riddle, dressed as the WOW Girl Mascot come up to me. They, and the owners of the con, decide to present me with the Cosplay Medal complete with limited artwork done by Frank Cho. Frank and Riddle said it was awarded to me for continued support to the con, in addition to promoting the con etc. Not only that, it was the very first one that they were awarding and wouldn’t be awarding more until next year for the costume contest. Their words nearly made me cry. It was an absolute honor to have been bestowed such an award! We also answered a lot of cosplay related questions from the audience as well talked about Frank’s upcoming How to Draw Women book that will be launching on Kickstarter. He also mentioned the watercolor print that he will be doing of me, to debut at SDCC this year! Again, this Monkey Boy surprises me by giving me the original sketch ( which I melted the second he did). Thank you Frank!!!

We went back to the table and an awesome fan brought me some Hooters wings! It was absolute heaven! Thank you! It was awesome being able to see all of the cosplayers and fans there. They made the show light up with excitement! You guys truly make me feel proud to be a part of this community! Not only that, Frank surprised us with an AMAZING ballpoint pen nude that he drew inside my Women Book 2. I was floored! Seriously dude, you spoil me!

We had dinner that night with Steven Morger and The Krystal Method, followed by hanging out and drinks with Joe Benitez, Eric Basaldua, J. Scott Campbell, Liam, Vampy Bit Me, LeeAnna Vamp, Cameron, Abby Darkstar, Keith, and so many more.

Sunday morning, the con was buzzing with anticipation for Stan Lee’s arrival. We picked him up from the airport and the madness that were the massive lines for Stan began to start moving. He was incredibly pleasant with the fans and made it a point to say thank you to them. The con floor was packed out, yet there were long lines outside of the con floor with fans waiting to take photos with Stan Lee or get his autograph. There were many that brought gifts to him, ranging from letters to wine to art. It’s been a while since he was in the Bay area and the fans were happy to have him there, as well as the owners of Big Wow and myself. Soon, it was time for Stan Lee to say goodbye to everyone and as Bill and I escorted him out of the convention, all of the fans started to clap and cheer, finally bellowing in unison, “Stan Lee” over and over again. Stan Lee had a huge grin on his face that seemed to remain for the remainder of my time with him. I dropped him off at the airport and said my goodbye’s.

On behalf of the Big Wow! ComiFest crew, I’d like to give a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to YOU, STAN LEE, for making this con happen. We are truly grateful for you and for the time you took to come out to our con. We are honored that you came out to Big Wow! ComicFest and we are truly indebted to you. We hope to have you grace our halls again!

Sunday evening consisted of having dinner with Frank Cho, Adam Hughes, Allison Sohn, Riddle, Chris, Albert Ng and others at a wonderful sushi restaurant. There were quite a few hilarious stories exchanged, one being Adam dressing up as Pam from Archer, complete with a dolphin hand puppet. All I can say is that it was bloody brilliant!

Unfortunately, Frank had to leave Monday morning and couldn’t make it to the vineyard. It was the same case with Adam and Allison and I was really bummed out about that. Our Monday trip after the con to the vineyard is definitely one of the highlights of the trip for me. It’s a relaxed environment where everyone can continue to mingle with one another and just breath a sigh of accomplishment for the con. The wine was spectacular and the company was phenomenal. We had some kick ass ribs, wraps, potato salad, and a vodka spiked watermelon. It was all incredible! Sorry, but I’m one of those girls that loves her food and has no problem eating and showing her love for food. Apparently, Riddle is the same… noms ensued! That night, we had dinner with Chris, Riddle, and Kelvin Mau, followed by hanging out in the lobby, checking out original Olivia art and doing a print trade. I walked away with three prints from Riddle… heehee.

The con was incredible, the fans and volunteers were amazing, the creators/artists/writers were mindblowing, and the cosplayers were awesome! I was seriously floored with the talent that we were able to get together for Big Wow! ComicFest. Thank you so much to the owners, Steven Morger, Steve Wyatt, Frank Cho, and Bill Cox for putting so much work into making this con amazing. You guys do it for the love of comics and that means the world to me. I am honored to be able to have all of you as friends in my life, hell, you guys are like family to me. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of that family! We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for next years’ BIG WOW! ComicFest!

Next up: Come see Frank Cho and I at Phoenix Comic Con this Thursday-Sunday at Table # 2022. We will both have prints, pens, buttons and pins available for purchase. I would love to meet you guys so please swing by and say hi! We both can’t wait to see you all! Thank you Frank for letting me take over your blog for the day and letting me bore the hell out of everyone with my shenanigans!

xoxo

Frank Cho jungle queen

- FRANK CHO : Jungle Queen scribbles – click to view full image -

I want to thank everyone for making this a wonderful show especially Ivy, Dave, Riki, Ted, Law Boy, Chris, Brandon and countless others who I can’t think of at this moment.

I’ll try to write up a decent report or two later but right now, I’m gonna go into my Odin sleep and recuperate.

(Maybe I can sucker Ivy Doomkitty to write one for me, again.)

Picture of the Day:

More sketches from my Jungle Queen project.
