30 Days of Tranquility Challenge
As we round the corner into a brand new month, I encourage you to spend time reviewing January and setting your February dreams. I’ll be doing the same, along with sharing the February book club pick and my Month in Review tomorrow.
Until then, do you know what write a love letter, apologize, go on an Artist Date, read for 20 minutes, get out in nature, and take a digital day off all have in common?
They’re each part of the 30 Days of Tranquility challenge found in the Daybook and Year of Tranquility!
Last week, I received this image and note from Courtney R.:
I finished just last night! It was great to challenge myself to do so much in one month.
Consider infusing February with 30 simple pleasures and participating in your own 30 days of Tranquility challenge.
Click here to download your worksheetLet me know how it goes! Bisous. x
PS Final two days to join the TDJ Passholder Collective. Doors close tomorrow night until December and would love to have you with us!

Your Year’s Dreams
In my latest book, Year of Tranquility, I start with an essay on Dreams (pp. 48-51) and encourage my reader to reflect on what she’d like more of/less of in her life and to picture herself at the end of the year.
I hope you’re settling into this new year and finding clarity. It’s slowly emerging for me. A few include: eat a salad daily, find more spaciousness, read 48 books, get to Paris.
When I say “spaciousness,” I think of French composer Claude Debussy’s quote, “Music is the space between the notes.” I need time being to offset all the doing and to appreciate what I see.
I used to dash into the new year with a big list. Now I allow it to unfold with direct care and feeding throughout the month of January. There’s no rush. And yet our future self is counting on us to take action.
Building on this week’s podcast, consider your Year’s Dreams.
Pull out your journal, light a candle, pour a cuppa, and reflect:What do I want and need? How do I want to feel?Where do I want to visit? What recipes do I want to try? What habits do I want to start or stop?Who do I want to see? What books do I want to read? What events do I want to host and/or attend? What practices do I want to start?Visualize yourself at the end of this year. Clarify 5 to 10 SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals to bring that visualization to life.Create a few action steps for each goal.American statesman Paul Nitze wrote, “One of the most dangerous forms of human error is forgetting what one is trying to achieve.” Keep your dreams front and center.
Live your word/theme of the year. Stay connected to your dreams. Honor your progress. Shift course, as needed. Encourage growth. Be gentle with yourself. Get into good trouble. Celebrate your success.
Let’s bring our dreams to life and make a difference. You’ve got this! Bisous. x

Tranquility in the Aftermath
Author’s note: I penned this piece (edited slightly) for last week’s Love Note and wanted to share it with you here, too. As MLK Day approaches, it feels especially apropos to reflect and connect.
January 6 began like any other weekday. I dressed, took a 30-minute walk around the block with my pug Gizmo (he’s slow), made a green smoothie, and settled in for a full day.
After a morning meeting and first two clients, I had a one-hour break. I walked Gizmo again, made another pot of tea, and, knowing about the rally down on the National Mall, checked in on the news. At that time, a mob had approached the Capitol and gotten inside the Rotunda—nearly three miles away.
Yes, the same spot that American heroes RBG and John Lewis had laid in state months earlier.
My hands shook and I felt the adrenaline run through my body. I texted with my partner Tim who was at his place in West Virginia. My phone blew up with emergency texts from the Mayor declaring a 6pm curfew. I received messages from loved ones, including this TDJ community (thank you), asking if I was okay. I watched in horror.
Soon, it was time for my next few clients, so I switched off the live news coverage, regrouped, and turned my attention to the person on the screen in front of me. Inhale, exhale.
Probably like you, I’m still processing what transpired and where we go from here. As we round the corner to MLK Day, I’m reminded of his quote, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
While so much is out of our control, we can make a difference in some small way. Reach out to someone. Send a snail mail love note. Volunteer. Teach. Check out this MLK Day of Service website. Help stock a food bank. Get involved. Foster, adopt, or sponsor an animal. Deliver meals. Post something inspiring on social media. Donate.
Read this article on how to be of service while isolating at home. The author recommends building and sending care packages, participating in teaching and learning opportunities, donating blood or bone marrow, giving companionship, and commemorating MLK’s legacy. Participate in a King Center Holiday Event. Offer support. Be gentle with yourself and others.
And remember, put on your own oxygen mask first. You’re here to do great things. Bisous. x

My Daily Practice
I hope you, too, were inspired by this interview with Eric Maisel on the power of daily practice. He’s one of my favorite guests and I always come away with a new nugget (or three) from our chat.
In the introduction to his new book, The Power of Daily Practice, he writes, “Daily practice is as much about paying attention to your life purpose choices as it is about getting something done. . . It is an invaluable way to make daily meaning and to live your life purposes fully.”
He goes on to describe a daily practice as, “A time carved out from the day when you pay real attention, it has a beginning and an end, and it is characterized by certain elements of practice.” He describes these 20 elements in part I of the book and they range from playfulness to discipline to regularity to innovation.
For me, most days include a practice of:1) dress-up (my uniform)/skin care/makeup
2) journaling/seeing clients/creating content/admin/writing
3) movement (yoga or ballet)
4) nourishment
While this sounds balanced, I know there’s room for growth. For example, less doomscrolling, more writing. Less toggling between tabs, more focused time. Less book buying, more book reading. Less frozen pizza, more salad. To name a few.
Have you considered your own daily practice(s)? Does it feel like your daily activities are moving you toward a bigger purpose? Can you commit to incorporating a 10-minute daily practice that will move you closer to a life dream? Bisous. x
What one small shift could make a big difference?
