May’s Book Club Pick
Welcome back to the Tranquility du Jour virtual book club! From one bibliophile to another, let’s read stories that move us, make us think, and open up important conversations.
Together we’ll read and discuss in our TDJ Insider’s Facebook group and hopefully in person someday soon. You in? Hope so!
Introducing Our May Book
DescriptionFrom the New York Times bestselling author of the million-copy bestseller Essentialism comes an empowering guide to achieving your goals, Effortless by Greg McKeown. It all starts with a simple principle: not everything has to be so hard.
Do you ever feel like: You’re teetering right on the edge of burnout? You want to make a higher contribution, but lack the energy? You’re running faster but not moving closer to your goals?Everything is so much harder than it used to be?As high-achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough.
But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the harder it is to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat,” we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.
Getting ahead doesn’t have to be as hard as we make it. No matter what challenges or obstacles we face, there is a better way: instead of pushing ourselves harder, we can find an easier path. Effortless offers actionable advice for making the most essential activities the easiest ones, so you can achieve the results you want, without burning out.
Effortless teaches you how to: Transform tedious tasks into enjoyable ritualsPrevent future frustrations by solving problems before they ariseSet a sustainable pace instead of powering throughMake one-time choices that eliminate many future decisionsSimplify your processes by removing unnecessary stepsMake relationships easier to maintain and manageAnd much more
I wanted to choose something to help us navigate the world as it reopens. As mentioned in my Life Lately post, I want to avoid returning to habits of overscheduling and am hopeful I can keep some of my pandemic lifestyle during this transition. Namely, more blank space, a slower pace, and deeper appreciation for things like live music, in-person time, and traveling. Also, I loved Essentialism and want to work smarter, not longer and make downtime a priority. For more insights, enjoy this interview in Vice. I hope you’ll join me!
How to JoinJoin us over on the TDJ Insider’s Facebook group. Look for the pinned post in our Facebook group. I’ll share a few thoughts and prompts mid-month and welcome you to share favorite quotes and takeaways throughout the month.
Want a physical copy of the book? Here’s a list of Black-owned bookstores. Or download the book via an e-reader or Audible (use this link for a free 30-day trial and first book).

Earth Day Every Day {10 Tips}
While we all know the importance of reduce, reuse, recycle, there are numerous ways to honor Mother Earth each and every day.
Here are a my top 10:1. Support farmers’ markets. Grab your reusable bag and hit your local market for flowers, fruits, and veggies. Or join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
2. Skip disposable and tote reusable water bottles and cups. I also tote a metal fork, metal straw, and cloth napkin everywhere. Say “food only” when ordering takeout to avoid those extra soy sauce packages and plastic utensils.
3. Spread kindness to all beings. Recycle. Pick up litter. Relocate uninvited critters (yep, even those leggy spiders) outdoors. Tread lightly. Practice mindfulness.
4. Support slow fashion. Americans toss an average of 68 pounds of clothing annually. Choose quality and versatility. Watch The True Cost documentary. Try locally-sewn, eco-friendly TDJ (save 20% with code EARTHDAY through 4/22).
5. Use eco-friendly cleaning products (or make your own). Forgo the chemicals and go DIY infused with your favorite essential oil.
6. Go veg. Meat production is one of the largest sources of water pollution, greenhouse gases, and loss of biodiversity. 10 reasons why it’s green to go veg. Consider taking this week’s 7-day VegPledge.
7. Get your hands dirty. Plant a veggie or herb garden. Add pink impatiens or purple pansies to terracotta pots. Insert a pop of color with a bright green pothos or philodendron. Surround yourself with plants (you’ll note some of my jungle in the above photo). Plants for beginners.
8. Spend time in nature. Savor a dose of fresh air and put things in perspective. Einstein said, “Look deep into nature, and you will understand everything better.” Try forest bathing.
9. Get inspired. Tune into my podcast with Ashlee Piper and Jennifer Maagendans filled with more ideas.
10. Compost. We keep our scraps (fruits, veggies, tea and tea bags, coffee grinds), in a tin compost on the counter and when it fills, we add them to our larger compost bin outside. Don’t have an outside? Many cities have compost drop-off spots. Fun fact: We only throw out trash once a week since so much ends up in the compost. More on what you can/can’t compost.
How do you like to honor Earth Day every day?Wishing you a beautiful Earth Day filled with plants and a deep connection to the world around you. Bisous. x

Wellness: The Ritual of Tea
As you sit down to contemplate Monday’s spring reflection prompts, I encourage you to light a candle and make a cuppa tea.
For me, tea signifies a pause, an exhale. A chance to get present and drop into reflection mode.
Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us, “Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves—slowly, evenly, without rushing toward the future. Live the actual moment. Only this moment is life.”
Each morning I turn on the kettle and listen as the water turns to a rolling boil. I pour it into my cup and watch the water fill the space.
Then I choose my tea. Since discovering The Qi’s Shangri-La Rose Whole Flower Tea (featured in these photos), I’ve been obsessed.
Fun fact: this one-of-a-kind high mountain rose is cultivated in Shangri-La at 10,000 feet above sea level. The special varietal yields the boldest nutrients, flavonoids, and aroma as it is from the most prized 1st pick of Spring.
I carefully unwrap it, breathe it in, and set it into the water.
After letting it steep and become saturated, I carefully remove it to make two more cups later in the day.
Then I take the cup, wrap my hands around it, hold the warmth, and sip slowly.
I love everything rose—candles, face masks, rosewater spray, lotion, soap, serums, pastries—and to be able to drink it is a delight!
The ritual of tea connects us to senses. It brings us into the moment and beckons us to slow, sip, and savor. Bisous. x
Check out The Qi
PS I like The Qi so much I agreed to be an affiliate. I hope you, too, will fall in love with their whole flower teas. And they make great gifts for your fellow tea lovers.
