Au Revoir Book Club

Thank you for reading along with me this past year in our online book club!

I’ve so appreciated your insights, enthusiasm, and support. Reading together helped me feel closer to you during a very trying time.

I’m writing to let you know that, for now, I’m ending our online book club with August’s book Burnout.

As I continue to hit the pause button on output while I consciously create some shifts (TBD—read more here), this felt like one piece to release.

Throughout our time together we’ve read White Fragility, Andre Leon Tally and Tina Turner’s latest memoirs, books about gathering and burnout, Dolly Parton’s Songteller, poetry, and more. An eclectic and inspiring mix!

I’ll still be reading along in Goodreads, so let’s connect there. Wishing you afternoons curled up on the couch with a good book, cuppa tea, and cozy clothing. Bisous. x

July in Review

Hello love, happy new month!

Monthly I do a review and also create my next month’s dreams. This reflection exercise allows me to stay accountable, review goals, celebrate, and note what needs adjustment. I duplicate this process in my Daybook, too, since I’m a paper lover!

You’ll also find an assortment of July’s photos plus a monthly roundup of all things TDJ and Savvy Sources I thought you’d enjoy.

Grab your planner, review your photos, and note how July’s dreams unfolded. Note your month’s highlights and consider what you’d like to experience, do, and/or be in the month ahead. Bisous. x

August’s Book Club Pick

Welcome back to the Tranquility du Jour book club! From one bibliophile to another, let’s read stories that move us, make us think, and open up important conversations.

Together we’ll read and discuss in our TDJ Insider’s Facebook group and hopefully in person someday soon. You in? Hope so!

Introducing Our August Book

Description

This groundbreaking book explains why women experience burnout differently than men—and provides a simple, science-based plan to help women minimize stress, manage emotions, and live a more joyful life.

Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things—and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. How can you “love your body” when every magazine cover has ten diet tips for becoming “your best self”? How do you “lean in” at work when you’re already operating at 110 percent and aren’t recognized for it? How can you live happily and healthily in a sexist world that is constantly telling you you’re too fat, too needy, too noisy, and too selfish?

Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against—and show us how to fight back. In these pages you’ll learn

• what you can do to complete the biological stress cycle—and return your body to a state of relaxation
• how to manage the “monitor” in your brain that regulates the emotion of frustration
• how the Bikini Industrial Complex makes it difficult for women to love their bodies—and how to defend yourself against it
• why rest, human connection, and befriending your inner critic are keys to recovering and preventing burnout

With the help of eye-opening science, prescriptive advice, and helpful worksheets and exercises, all women will find something transformative in these pages—and will be empowered to create positive change. Emily and Amelia aren’t here to preach the broad platitudes of expensive self-care or insist that we strive for the impossible goal of “having it all.” Instead, they tell us that we are enough, just as we are—and that wellness, true wellness, is within our reach.

Why I Chose It

I wanted to choose another book that will help us navigate the world as it world as it continually shifts and we reevaluate what matters most. May we reduce the stress in our lives, manage emotions, and live a more joyful life by implementing some of their wellness tools. I hope you’ll join me!

How to Join

Hop over to the TDJ Insider’s Facebook group and look for the pinned post. I’ll share a few thoughts and prompts mid-month and welcome you to share favorite quotes and takeaways throughout the month.

Want a physical copy of the book? Here’s a list of Black-owned bookstores. Or download the book via an e-reader or Audible (use this link for a free 30-day trial and first book).
