Today’s the Day

In 2016, I created this post on what to do while waiting for election results. Today’s the day many of us have been waiting for since that dark night and I woke up with a cocktail of anxiety, energy, and excitement.

Tonight will be long and while hitting refresh over and over is an option, I wanted to offer a few alternatives to combat the anxious energy.

Walk your dog
Write a love letter to Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, Ida B. Wells, Frances E.W. Harper, and/or Mary Church Terrell
Paint your nails red
Soak in a lavender-infused bubble bath
Organize a desk drawer
Wear a pantsuit
Order in your favorite meal
Go for a run
Pour a glass (or two) of bubbly
Do yoga
Dance this Election Day Spotify Playlist
Take 10 deep breaths. Repeat.
Dress in white to honor the Suffragettes
Bake vegan cupcakes and top with red, white, and blue sprinkles
Go for a brisk walk
Rake leaves
Write a letter of gratitude to a woman who has influenced you
Document today in your journal
Combat the isms: sexism, racism, classism, ableism, ageism, heterosexism, colorism, lookism, nativism
Listen to classical music
Meditate
Make a list of gratitude
Read an inspiring text
Hug a loved one
Write a thank you to an elected official
Get involved with Women’s March
Focus on what you can control
Clean your WFH space
Read about women’s history
Watch Mrs. America or RBG

Above all, protect your mental health. Then hit refresh. Wishing you and yours a tranquil evening as the results come in. Fingers crossed.

Science is real. Black lives matter. No human is illegal. Women’s rights are human rights. Love is love. Kindness is everything. I heart you. Bisous. x

Halloween Looks

After a quick jaunt to the nearby town of Shepherdstown, West Virginia for lunch and baked goods, we got into our Star Wars gear while there was still daylight.

Tim had gotten the pups their Star Wars branded (seriously) pet costumes over the past few months plus a red (although it looks pink in the daylight) crystal for my saber to turn me into a Sith. Not sure what/who that is, but was informed I could wear all black to be one, so I was on board!

During the “official” photo shoot (attached his phone to a tree), we also recorded videos for family and a few friends who have kids that are Star Wars fans. In one video Tim says, “I’m nearly 50 years old!” and we laugh!

We spent the rest of the evening fireside watching scary films and noshing on popcorn into the wee hours. Woke up so grateful for today’s extra hour—truly a gift!

Oh, and did you see the full moon? It’s so big, bright, and beautiful!

Hope you had a joyful holiday filled with pumpkins, treats, and celebration. Bisous. x

November Book Club Pick

Welcome back to the Tranquility du Jour virtual book club!

From one bibliophile to another, I’d love to read stories with you that move us and make us think and to open up important conversations to encourage reflection and deeper understanding.

Together we’ll read books and discuss them over in our TDJ Insider’s Facebook group and hopefully in person someday soon. You in? Hope so!

November Book

Description

From the author’s website: “By the time she was in her late twenties, Tara Schuster was a rising TV executive who had worked for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and helped launch Key & Peele to viral superstardom. By all appearances, she had mastered being a grown-up. But beneath that veneer of success, she was a chronically anxious, self-medicating mess. No one knew that her road to adulthood had been paved with depression, anxiety, and shame, owing in large part to her minimally parented upbringing. She realized she’d hit rock bottom when she drunk-dialed her therapist pleading for help.

Through simple, daily rituals, Tara transformed her mind, body, and relationships, and in this book she shows how to…

• fake gratitude until you actually feel gratitude

• excavate your emotional wounds and heal them with kindness

• identify your self-limiting beliefs, kick them to the curb, and start living a life you choose

• silence your inner frenemy and shield yourself from self-criticism

• carve out time each morning to start your day empowered, inspired, and ready to rule

• create a life you truly, totally f*cking LOVE

This is the book Tara wished someone had given her and it is the book many of us desperately need: a candid, hysterical, addictively readable, practical guide to growing up (no matter where you are in life) and learning to love yourself in a non-throw-up-in-your-mouth-it’s-so-cheesy way.”

Why I Chose It

I searched high and low for the right November fit and you offered so many great ideas in the TDJ Insiders Facebook group and during our recent TDJ Lifestyle gathering. Ultimately, this book felt like just what we needed as we round the corner on 2020 with good self-care and a strong mindset. Plus, the cover is gorgeous! I know, I know, don’t judge a book by its cover, but my goodness, it draws you in and it looks like it’s chock-full of many TDJ topics and delights. Happy reading!

How to Join

Read the book and join us over on theTDJ Insider’s Facebook group. Want a hard copy? Here’s a list of Black-owned bookstores. Or download the book via an e-reader or Audible (use this link for a free 30-day trial and first book). Look for the pinned post about the book. I’ll share a few thoughts and prompts by mid-month and welcome you to share favorite quotes and takeaways throughout the month.

I Took the Oath

Carrying a handbag stuffed full of notes and wearing lots of black layers plus a knit beanie to adjust to changing temps, I wandered the basement exhibit hall of a fancy DC hotel in spring 2016. Mainly, I searched for candy at the psychotherapy conference vendors’ tables. I mean, it’s set out to lure you in to their booths to thumb through books promising new spins on therapy interventions and, well, I’m a sucker for candy.

After gorging myself on dark chocolate balls wrapped in world map print foil, I found the area where swag bags stamped with the conference logo were awaiting attendees. I grabbed one and then darted through the aisles to purchase a few books and then headed toward the door.

Before exiting I saw a recycling bin and knew the bag had to be stuffed with promos for online courses, books, and treatment centers that I didn’t need, so I stopped to toss them into the blue recycling bin. I thumbed through each piece and had the stack hovering over the receptacle when I saw the image of a dog peeking out and the words “Veterinary Social Work.” Oh my goodness!

I pulled it from the pile and felt my heart race as I read through the description: post-graduate certificate program, the link between human and animal violence, animal-assisted interactions, compassion fatigue and conflict management, pet loss and grief at the University of Tennessee.

I held the orange, black, and white flier to my chest and muttered “thank you.”

Fast forward to last weekend where I took the veterinary social work oath. I teared up as I raised my right hand and recited these words.

“Specializing in veterinary social work, I pledge my service to society by tending to the human needs that arise in the relationship between humans and animals. From a strengths perspective and using evidence-based practice, I will uphold the ethical code of my profession, respect and promote the dignity and worth of all species, and diligently strive to maintain mindful balance in all of my professional endeavors.”

After finding out about this program over four years ago, I immediately applied and have been a proud UT Volunteer ever since. An application process, four online modules filled with hours of material, 16 hours of supervision, and a week-long conference later, I *almost* did it!

To complete my certificate I have a 250-hour final project to create and am contemplating virtual pet loss support groups (first one is November 9 at 7:30pm ET—email me, if interested).

Here’s a Washington Post article on what veterinary social workers do.

I look forward to deepening my work within this specialty that stands to serve all beings. May we all be happy and free. Bisous. x
