Oh Accessories
How I love thee!
Building on Monday’s podcast, let’s explore how accessories are a quick tool for creating your own signature style in a flash (and on a budget).
As someone who enjoys the simplicity of wearing head-to-toe back (and recently took the clothing line to fully noir), I love how adding accessories helps to spice up the most basic tee and legging look. Add a long strand of faux pearls, an over the shoulder wrap, and gold booties for holiday flair.
Truly, they turn your average black dress into a cocktail worthy ensemble (when paired with heels, a faux fur shrug, and sparkly earrings) or a fancy black dress into a more casual chic look (when paired with a denim shirt and sneakers).
And the options are endless!
Accessories to adorn:
warm smile
brooches
socks
sunnies
scarves (tied in the hair/around neck/around wrist/around handbag)
necklaces (long faux pearls fancy up a black tee and jeans)
earrings
wraps
gloves
hats
bags
armwarmers/legwarmers
rings
umbrellas
belts
positive attitude
outerwear (faux fur, denim, trench coat, faux leather, parka, duster, peacoat, raincoat, cape)
footwear (kitten heels, pumps, stilettos, wedges, sandals, ballet flats, tall boots, sneakers, clogs)
face masks
makeup
When looking for a way to spruce up your style, consider adding a pop of leopard-print, sparkly studs, long gloves, red lips and, voilà, you’re expressing your inner old Hollywood glamour. Bisous. x

5 Steps Toward Minimalism
Clearing clutter—be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual—brings about ease and inspires a sense of peace, calm, and tranquility. —Laurie Buchanan
To follow up on this week’s podcast with ideas on living a more minimalist lifestyle, let’s consider small steps to simplify our everyday lives.
Although we may not run off to the woods à la Thoreau, we can hit the pause button from time to time to check in with ourselves from the comfort of our own home and reset.
Below are five ideas to get us started:
1. Limit media consumption. According to the New York Times, Americans spend five hours watching TV and Entrepreneur notes that another two hours is spent on social media daily.
2. Establish routines. Housework, grocery shopping, bill pay, meals, morning and evening rituals, bathing, and travel prep. Routines give us a sense of structure and control—which is especially helpful when life feels out of control.
3. Create space. On your desk, in your life, in your schedule, in your handbag, and in your mind. Shed what’s draining you—relationships, commitments, stuff.
4. Reflect. Make a list of what you value most right now. Note if they’re getting time and space in your planner and in your day-to-day.
5. Contribute. Volunteer, donate, raise awareness, support your favorite causes, host awareness-raising events, be of service.
May we live in a way that aligns most with what we hold dear. Remember, there’s no “right” way to practice minimalism. It’s your interpretation of the minimalist movement that matters most.
Identify what is important and shed those non-essentials. Oh, and read Essentialism! Bisous. x

Why I Chose It
Love me some Dolly! I recently watched Dolly Parton: Here I Am (highly recommend) and couldn’t wait for this latest release. She’s fierce, feisty, and also America’s sweetheart (who seems like she’d be the best friend ever)! She helped fund Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, works to preserve the bald eagle, and promotes literacy through her Imagination Library. My copy arrives on Tuesday and I can’t wait to dive in. Join me and happy reading!
How to Join
Read the book and join us over on the TDJ Insider’s Facebook group. Want a hard copy? Here’s a list of Black-owned bookstores. Or download the book via an e-reader or Audible (use this link for a free 30-day trial and first book). Look for the pinned post about the book. I’ll share a few thoughts and prompts by mid-month and welcome you to share favorite quotes and takeaways throughout the month.

Happy Thanksgiving
Love to consider your health, the planet, and the animals as you create your festive Thanksgiving experience? Me, too!
Here are a few sustainable and compassion-filled tips:
✨ Forgo plastic and use your family’s fanciest
✨ Bring the outside world in with a nature-filled tablescape such as pine cones, boughs, berries, fallen leaves, pumpkins painted silver, moss, greenery, and/or flowers
✨ Skip meat or make it a small side dish versus the main course
✨ Say goodbye to paper plates and napkins and pull out those vintage pieces and cloth napkins
✨ Illuminate with candles
✨ Choose food items with less packaging
✨ Donate to a local food bank
✨ Adopt a turkey
✨ Compost things like veggie peels, tea bags, coffee grounds
✨ Visit the farmers’ market and shop local
✨ Make your hostess or guest gifts (bath salts, cookies, candles) or buy from local artisans
✨ Treat your body to a long stroll or soothing yoga practice (try one in Tranquil Treasures)
✨ Be gentle with yourself and practice mindful self-compassion
✨ Soften and surrender expectations as this year is different
✨ Connect with loved ones and share gratitude via Zoom
✨ Create (or purchase pre-made) healthy and plant-filled dishes (50 recipes)
______________
Many are curious about eating more plants as a way to heal our planet, stop factory farming, and get more nutrients in their diet. I’ve been veg for 20+ years, am obsessed with animals, and, as you know, pigs and pugs have my heart (hello Pigs & Pugs Project).
I love what this lifestyle has done for me and my health. And I also know that the holidays can be a challenging time to practice mindful eating. I mean, pumpkin pie! Personally, I like it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but I digress.
A couple years ago I created a Facebook group, TDJ Eat Plants, where I share veg-friendly recipes and inspiration. In it you’ll find gentle nourishment for the belly and soul. If you’re looking for plant-based ideas and support, join us!
Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving. May we spread compassion, practice sustainability, and live tranquility.
This season, I’m particularly grateful for YOU! x
