January’s Book Club Pick

Welcome back to the Tranquility du Jour virtual book club! From one bibliophile to another, let’s read stories that move us, make us think, and open up important conversations.

Together we’ll read and discuss in our TDJ Insider’s Facebook group and hopefully in person someday soon. You in? Hope so!

January Book

Description

Tina Turner—living legend, icon to millions, and author of the “brave and wry” (Vulture) memoir My Love Story—returns with a deeply personal book of wisdom that explores her longstanding faith in Buddhism and provides a guide to these timeless principles so you can find happiness in your own life.

I dedicate this book to you…

in honor of your

unseen efforts to

triumph over each problem

life sends your way.

Tina is a global icon of inspiration. And now, with Happiness Becomes You: A Guide to Changing Your Life for Good, Tina shows how anyone can overcome life’s obstacles—even transform the “impossible” to possible—and fulfill our dreams. She shows how we, too, can improve our lives, empowering us with spiritual tools and sage advice to enrich our unique paths.

Buddhism has been a central part of Tina Turner’s life for decades and, in music, film, and live performances, she has shined as an example of generating hope from nothing, breaking through all limitations, and succeeding in life. Drawing from the lessons of her own life, from adversity to stratospheric heights, Tina effortlessly shows how the spiritual lessons of Buddhism help her transform from sorrow, adversity, and poverty into joy, stability, and prosperity.

Why I Chose It

I came across this book early December and knew it would be perfect for the new year. Buddhism, happiness, Tina, spiritual tools, sage advice, I’m in! I mean, Tina Turner and Dolly Parton—two powerful female musical icons in a row. I’ve downloaded it on Kindle and look forward to reading along with you.

And, I’ve recently discovered Schitt’s Creek (I know, I know, a bit late to the party) and am obsessed with this scene (and want David to be my BFF). I may have cried. Anyway, join me and happy reading!

How to Join

Join us over on the TDJ Insider’s Facebook group. Look for the pinned post in our Facebook group early next week. I’ll share a few thoughts and prompts mid-month and welcome you to share favorite quotes and takeaways throughout the month.

Want a physical copy of the book? Here’s a list of Black-owned bookstores. Or download the book via an e-reader or Audible (use this link for a free 30-day trial and first book).

Design an inspiration board to bring your dreams to life.
Spend time in contemplation and community.
Reconnect with your body through an all-level yoga and meditation practice.
Take your inner artist on a half-day date.
Leave with an action plan.

Grab one of the remaining five spots and I’ll send you a 30-page workbook and Zoom link to join us!

Here’s what former participants had to say

Kimberly’s 3-hour live retreat made a huge difference during a time when self-care is critically needed. She thoughtfully provided seated yoga, meditation and journaling to get us to the a clear mental place where we could get into the right mindset to do deep inner work, connect within, shift energy, and emerge totally refreshed and rejuvenated. Thank YOU again! —Kelly

Thank you so much for the wonderful retreat! It allowed me to start fresh and leave a lot of negativity behind. It essentially enabled me to detoxify and rejuvenate my life. Everything feels so much better! When you asked us what the highlight of the retreat was, I answered everything. I meant it! I loved the poem, the art journaling, the meditation, the yoga—all of it! It was great to be in touch with so many liked-minded people. Also, the retreat didn’t just make a difference for me, through my elevated mood, it also made my husband much happier. —Madelyn

The virtual retreat you hosted yesterday was exactly what I needed and WANTED. I felt like a breath of fresh air had been blown my way and cleared the cobwebs of anxiety, inertia, “distractedness” from my mind, body and heart. You provided me with some concrete tools and encouragement to get grounded again…especially in these uncertain times…and to move forward, taking little steps each day so that I can show up again in my life. It was just the perfect “reset” button for me. —Shelly

Sustainable Style Story

Style

Style is an outward expression of who we are, how we feel, and what we think. I like to think that we tell a story through our style as beautifully articulated in this Washington Post piece.

Here’s what Nadine Farag of The One Who Dresses says this about style:

“At its essence, style is a complicated, endlessly fascinating human capacity. It is our spirit and what we think, our creativity, our individual way of being, and our intention for our clothes. To nurture a meaningful relationship with fashion, our task is to understand style, to hone it, to carefully craft it and make it our own.”

Shop the look: 21in1 fitted top and capri leggings

Each day as I reach for my go-to outfit (shown above), I’m choosing comfort, ease, and creative expression because I can dress this up or down, add layers, and transform the look using this solid base. See 21 ways to wear this look.

In addition to wearing clothing that looks good, tells a story, and makes us feel good, shopping sustainable helps support our desire to do good.

Sustainable Style

According to Green Strategy, “sustainable fashion can be defined as clothing, shoes, and accessories that are manufactured, marketed and used in the most sustainable manner possible, taking into account both environmental and socio-economic aspects.”

One of my favorite websites Live Kindly, lists three aspects to look for when striving to shop sustainably:

Clothes made locally.
Transparency.
Sustainable materials.

As noted in this week’s podcast, thrifting is another way to choose sustainability. According to Council for Textile Recycling, Americans toss 70 pounds of clothing each year (oh my!), so giving a formerly loved item a new home is a oh-so-green.

And, let’s be honest, the thrill of the hunt can keep us going for days! Thanks to thrifting, I’ve given a new home to a prom dress, pink cowboy boots in my size, multiple faux fur coats, over the knee boots, and vintage jewelry (to name a few favorite finds over the past three decades).

Your Very Own

When visualizing this new year and how you want to show up, consider your own style. Does it feel like an accurate representation of who you are and where you are right now in your life?

With many of us WFH, comfort is key. I think I’ll describe mine as “cozy with a splash of flair.” You? What’s your story? Bisous. x

Tranquility du Jour #521: Sustainable Secondhand StyleSammy Davis is a busy New Yorker who quit a career in fashion publishing to launch a brand on all things secondhand fashion and resale in 2008. Since then, she’s sold designer and vintage clothes at Brooklyn flea markets, operated a trendy NYC vintage boutique, appeared on national TV representing thrifting and sustainable style, and since launching the NYC Bargain Thrift Store Tour in 2018, thrifted with thousands of tourists and locals in and around New York City.

Sammy currently works as a resale coach, offering consulting and courses via a membership community called THRIFT BOSS BABES, which is a paid subscription marketplace where members buy & sell thrifted finds, all while learning how to level up their resale businesses. Her mission is helping people live their best lives in looks for less, while also contributing to a more sustainable world and being better stewards of their personal finances as “thrifters.”

In October, Sammy co-hosted the first ever virtual thrift style conference, “The Heart of Thrift.”

Penned Months in Review

Reflection

To compile this list, I thumbed through my Daybook, dug into online systems for data, and reviewed blog posts. My favorite part of this “research” was tallying up my movement classes. Yay ballet!

In a recent blog post, I shared my typical day and although the past 9+ months have felt like groundhog day, it’s helpful to recall the varied adventures and many sweet moments sprinkled in.

Upon review of my 2020 year’s dreams, I see that I accomplished 70(ish)% of them. The pending ones are more strategic (ex. increase Pigs & Pugs Project awareness), learning projects (ex. doing the many online courses I sign up for), and that darn memoir proposal (ex. the work continues).

As I look to 2021, I see a few priorities: memoir, content creation for YOU (especially Annual Passholders), professional development, relationships, health. Once I’ve clarified and penned my dreams, I’ll be sure to share! Bisous. x

What to Expect in 2021

I’m a list girl. I need to write everything down or my mind feels like a snow globe all shaken up. Making lists is how I sort things out. Ideally with colored markers, a cuppa tea in hand, and jazzy tunes playing.

Each December, I pen a Year in Review (forthcoming) and contemplate how best to serve the TDJ community in the year ahead.

Here’s a peek inside where I’ve landed . . .

Planning 2021 Pop-Up (bonus for fall TDJ Lifestyle and TDJ Annual Passholders)
four seasonal TDJ Lives
four virtual retreats
a virtual Pigs & Pugs event
weekly podcasts
weekly Love Notes
weekly blog posts
monthly Tea with Kimberly videos
a spring TDJ Lifestyle e-course
updates to Treasures
monthly online book club picks in our TDJ Insider’s Facebook group
a few weekly Instagram and Facebook posts
recipes and plant love to the TDJ Eat Plants Facebook group
lots of VIP love to the ultimate TDJ offering, the Annual Pass.

How does this sound/feel to you?

Is there anything you’d like more or less of? Any topics you’d like covered on the podcasts and blog or in the Tea with Kimberly videos?

Please share in the comments below. Or send a note via email! I’m always grateful to hear from you.

Wishing you a gentle conclusion to 2020. May our stroll into 2021 be intentional and nurture our inner knowing. I heart you! Bisous. x

Making a Difference

The greatest danger to our future is apathy. —Jane Goodall

Building off this week’s podcast and on our TDJ Tenet compassion, let’s explore ways to make a difference.

We can do this through our daily actions. We know about recycling, forgoing plastic straws and bags, and trimming waste, but what else?

I’ve pulled together two downloadables for you filled with many ideas. You’ll note some overlap between compassion and activism as I see them as intertwined.

Activism is defined as “a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue.” (Mirriam-Webster)

Download this Everyday Activism PDF.

Compassion is defined as “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.” (Mirriam-Webster)

Download this Everyday Compassion PDF.

Wishing you a compassion-filled holiday week. May we never be apathetic and may we live in a way that uplifts all beings. Bisous. x

A Day in the Life

I often get asked what a typical day is like and although no two are truly the same, here’s a sneak peek into most of life at the Pink Palace (my tiny condo in Washington, DC).

AM Ritual 7-8ish

Feed my three rescue pugs, make tea and a green smoothie, scroll through email, social, and The New York Times sooner than I wish I did (why can’t I wait?!), soak in the tub, get dressed (typically another set of what I wore the day before and, yes, slept in—2in1 fitted top + capri leggings), do skin care routine, apply makeup (always waterproof mascara, cat eyes, and red lips)

Start Day 9ish

Walk pugs, review Daybook, journal, work on projects (such as TDJ, write Love Notes, blog posts, or social, create videos, prep podcasts) meetings, take a virtual ballet class, handle email

Noonish Begin Seeing Clients

Virtual sessions with therapy clients

Evening Ritual 7-10ish

Read, cuddle with pugs, work on projects, take a virtual ballet class (if didn’t in the AM), handle email, watch news or the show-of-the-moment fireside, do skin care routine, lights out

Weekends

Same start as weekdays with more of the above evening activities sprinkled throughout the day plus tea dates, museum jaunts, Zoom dates, pen snail mail, and host online events
