When You’re Young, They Dismiss You Because You Don’t Have Enough Experience

When you’re young, they dismiss you because you don’t have enough experience.

What do you know? they say. You haven’t been through anything. You have to live to learn. To do to know.

You can’t just spring out of the womb wise. Fully formed like Athena was when she was born from Zeus’s head.  » Read more

Is There a Difference Between Natural and Affected Extroversion?

As I wrote in a recent post, I recently moved cross country and have discovered that in spite of my assumption that I’d rush out and get socially connected ASAP that I am very introverted in my new home.

Happily introverted.

It’s a sharp 180 from my normal way of relating.  » Read more

The Multiple Source Effect

Ah, multiple sources. When I was first learning to write term papers in school, you were the bane of my existence. Even though these were the days before Wikipedia or anything close to a widely available high-speed Internet, and we were dragging our bodies physically to college libraries, navigating a card catalog (although if you were lucky and it was a nice,  » Read more

The Curious Case of Hundredth Monkey Effect and How Ideas Actually Seem to Spread

During this weekend series, I’ve primarily stuck to phenomena that have held up to empirical research or at least heavily been supported by clinical practice.

In today’s article, however, I’d like to talk about a completely hypothetical phenomenon called hundredth monkey effect.

Stage 5 Clingers Bring Out the Avoidance in Me

Even though I recently tested as securely attached, I bear all the hallmarks of someone who spent my earliest years in intimate relationships anxiously attached. In my own case, this owed to some abandonment issues.

Abandonment issues aren’t all that rare. They’re more common than a lot of people realize.  » Read more

Why It Can Be Difficult to Trust People, Even When They Believe What They Say

The more you know about bias and how deeply it’s entrenched in our brains, the more it becomes truly difficult to trust other people. How they will treat us. If what they say to us is true…

Unfortunately, we’re all capable of saying untrue things, regardless of any moral commitment to truthfulness. Contrary to what a lot of people think,  » Read more

Helping People Learn to Crochet During Nuclear Winter

“Look at the bright side,” I say to him. “When Roe v. Wade is overturned, you’ll be a hot piece of ass with your vasectomy and all.”

He cracks a smile. Chuckles. “You’re terrible,” he says.

“Maybe,” I say, “But you laughed.”

“I did indeed.”

It’s maybe not the best way to deal with the feeling that the world is ending any day now.  » Read more

Good Conversation and Good Communication Are Different Things

“I don’t know that we communicate well,” I say to him.

“This is news to me,” he replies.

“Really?”

“Really,” he says. “I love talking to you.”

“I do, too,” I say. “We have good conversations.”

“But you just…”

I sigh. “Just because we have good conversations doesn’t mean that we communicate well.”  » Read more

When You’ve Changed, You Have to Decide Whether to Accept It or Try to Force Yourself Back

Two months ago, I moved from Cleveland to Dallas. I laughed the first time I was asked if I might be amenable to moving to Texas five months ago.

But the more I learned about the job opportunity in Dallas, the less insane it sounded.

And a month after that, I was straight out getting rid of most of what I owned,  » Read more

Could the Kindly Brontosaurus Be Your New Best Friend?

I have a confession to make: I’m always the idiot at the restaurant who ordered the spicy food and drank all my water before my meal arrived.

It’s me. I’m the person sitting there trying her best to eat her meal without anything to drink, sweat pouring down her face. Hoping that the server will swing by soon with something to drink and save me from myself.  » Read more
