Cleaning Up Unfinished Business!

Parents this one’s for you!  This blog is dedicated to those of us who need to “clean up” that unfinished business that keeps us from being the best mother, father, husband, wife, friend, brother, or sister we can be!

Life is a journey and each of us possesses our own unique journey.  As many of you who follow me know, mine was growing up in an abusive, alcoholic home.  I could, and likely will, write a book on the adventurous life I lead to get to the place I am today.

Cleaning it Up!

So what do I mean when I say “clean up the unfinished business?”  Let’s start by thinking about a few examples:

Did your mom or dad beat the tar out of you when you were young (mentally or physically)?Did you get blamed for something you didn’t do?Were you bullied or harassed by a friend or relative? Were you made to feel you weren’t good enough by someone you looked up to?

These are just a few that come to mind, but you get the idea.  Someone hurt you and likely never took accountability or offered an apology.   We risk carrying that pain into our adult life if unresolved.  It may take on the look of stress, depression, addiction (sex, food, drugs or alcohol), divorce etc., because you “stuffed” the feelings.  Time to get it cleaned up!

The How-The Why-The When

How?  I recommend that you begin to draft a letter to the person(s) that hurt you.  First write down what happened and how you were hurt.  Remind them of the role they played and exactly how it was hurtful to you, hold them accountable!  After you’ve gotten your thoughts on paper, go back and tidy it up; it’s best to accomplish this with the help of a counselor, mentor, or trusted friend.  It is emotional, and the process is, and feels messy at first.  The result is it’s also very cathartic to release those “stuffed” feelings.

Why?  We all deserve to live a life free of past pain(s).  If we don’t let go of our childhood traumas it follows us into our adult life and frankly creates issues with our own children, partners, friends, family members and those we hold dear.  Time to clean it up!

When?  Don’t waste any more time.  Life’s too short!  Remember, not all letters are meant to be sent, maybe the person is no longer alive, or they are unsafe in some way.  This process is for YOU not them!

The only way to heal is to rip the band aid off the wound, clean it up, give it some air and feel how wonderful it is to finally scab over and be gone!

Introducing-Adult Quest!

This past year has been a doozy!  It has touched each one of us; some positive lessons learned and some, not so much. Adults had to completely upend their life and their family’s life.  Some grew closer and some did not.

What is Adult Quest?

Typically families see me to enroll their son in The Quest Project®; today I have an equal number of men and women partaking in an “adult version” of The Quest Project. Imagine a group of six women or men, ages 20 yrs. to 64 yrs. of age coming together once a week for 10 weeks to work through issues they feel have prevented them from being the woman or man they want to be!

Are you ready for the opportunity to reconnect with the part of you that intuitively knows what is right? To own your Gift and develop your Life Mission? Adult Quest offers a series of guided imageries & experiential activities, focused group exercises, and healing. Each process has been carefully designed to help find and access their inner strength to support themselves in their daily lives.

Here is what we cover:

how to build a safe containerunfinished businessgoal setting and blockpurpose in lifewound workanger shadowconflict resolutiondiscover your giftdefine your life missionrelationships & valuesachieve forgivenessReady to “Clean up the Whole Thing?”

Maybe you never had a mentor or healthy example of “how to” become a healthy adult.  I see moms, dads, wives, husbands, sisters, and brothers that have done the best they could over the years but realize “something” is missing.  Maybe you grew up in a divorced home; you didn’t get much time with your mother or father because they didn’t have time for you.  Maybe mom and dad worked away during your formative years.  There are multiple reasons, but the bottom line is you did not have a role model to teach and provide you many of life’s most important lessons.

Now there is “immediate help and hope!”  I am excited about the potential of bringing families closer.  My mission: “to create healthy lifestyles by teaching, facilitating, writing, research and example” is my commitment I will continue to research, discover, and publish examples of what I learn in my first-hand experience and intensive feedback from participants.

Are you an adult male or female who missed some important time with your mom or dad and would like to heal?  I can help.

Adult Quest will teach you how to clear the noise and live life with purpose and clarity!  It will equip you with the tools needed to “take back” control of your life!

Take this journey of discovery to experience your inner landscape so that you can reclaim and define what you want, and more importantly, who you are in your life!  Space is limited, call now to reserve your seat.

Founder of The Quest Project®-Dr. Clay

Choosing a counselor and/or a program for your son is an important step.   Both parent and son need to establish a connection with the therapist.  It is essential to the work; so, take your time and be confident in your selection process.

The Quest Project®

When I started my practice in 2000, I had a vision; the vision was to develop a modern-day rite of passage® program designed to help adolescent males in their transition to become a man.  Since that time I have facilitated 2000+ adolescent males in their growth, healing, and quest to become a responsible man!  It’s called The Quest Project.

As the facilitator of The Quest Project, I am in the “trenches” with the boys that come to see me, I’m good at it!  I know how to quickly uncover and get to the wound an adolescent male carries.

My Expertise

Through my extensive research, and by visiting several other programs in the US over the years to observe other methods, I know the “what, how, why and when.”  I know the importance of “getting to it” when dealing with adolescent males.  I don’t waste time skirting the issue.  I do not fantasize “time” will take care of it! When a parent brings their son to me, the need is immediate!

I start with an assessment and/or evaluation, then we get right to work!

Time, most of the time, is of the essence.  I move quickly to uncover the issues; because when a young man is at risk it is crucial that we get started.

My Qualifications

My education and publications:

Completed my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1994.Earned a Master of Arts in Counseling; Thesis topic: “The Effect of Initiation and Mentoring on Adolescent Boys” (Lessor, C., 1998).Became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 1999.Published in peer reviewed journal “Role of Deceased Mentors in the Ongoing Lives of Protégés,” Omega: Journal of Death and Dying (Lessor, C., & Marwit, S., 2000). Published “Saving Our Sons”-A Parent’s Guide to Preparing Boys for Success 2016.Graduated Doctor of Philosophy in Education with the Distinguished Graduate Award in 2017.  Dissertation title: “Difference of a Counselor Facilitated Adolescent Boys Group on Behavior” (Lessor, 2017).Published “Generation of Men”-How to raise your son to be a healthy man among men 2019.Soon to be published in a peer reviewed Journal: The Journal of Academic Scholarship “Difference of a Counselor Facilitated Adolescent Boys Group on Behavior” (Lessor, 2021).

I am a proud veteran of the United States Air Force; I retired a Captain with 20+ years of service, receiving multiple awards and recognitions.

A Clear Mission

In addition to my work with adolescents, I facilitate weekend workshops for adults.  Women’s Quest and Men’s Quest are designed for growth, healing, and a better understanding of how to be responsible men and women.

This is how I live my mission:

Facilitate two to three age-appropriate The Quest Project® groups a week.Facilitate Women’s Quest groups.Facilitate Men’s Quest groups. In addition, developing The Quest Project Online to reach more families everywhere.

In my spare time, I have fun spending time with my family.  My not for profit called Charity Patch is where we spend our summer and provide fresh produce to the local food pantry. I am in the library doing research, analyzing, writing, and preparing for the next steps that will help young men, their parents and all families live healthy more responsible lives!

My Mission:

To Create Healthy Lifestyles by Teaching, Facilitating, Writing, Research and Example!

Life is What YOU Make It

Born the eldest of three to Russell and Doris Lessor, I grew up in a small south city neighborhood in St. Louis.  On the outside we looked like a typical happy lower middle-class family, on the inside it was a nightmare of alcoholism and abuse.  I didn’t grow up privileged, I grew up making a decision to survive and be a better man than my father.

Life Gave Me Lemons

My story is one laced with beatings, drunkenness, divorce and abandonment.  I will spare the details to get to the most important thing, the decision to take control of my destiny!

For me, the opportunity to get “away” presented itself when I turned 18 and graduated high school (barely).  My best friend and I joined the United States Air Force.  The military was easy for me; it offered structure and organization that replaced a life of chaos, I welcomed and excelled in my new environment!

Finally, I could make my own decisions, choices and mistakes!  I COULD be a Doctor if I wanted to, even though my dad told me “I wasn’t smart enough.”

I Made Lemonade

Turns out once free of the abuse and chaos I discovered just how smart I am as my education and publications reflect:

Completed my Bachelor of Artsin Psychology in 1994.
Earned a Master of Arts in Counseling; Thesis topic: “The Effect of Initiation and Mentoring on Adolescent Boys” (Lessor, C., 1998) in 1998.
Became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 1999.
Published in peer-reviewed journal “Role of Deceased Mentors in the Ongoing Lives of Protégés,” Omega: Journal of Death and Dying (Lessor, C., & Marwit, S., 2000).
Published “Saving Our Sons”-A Parent’s Guide to Preparing Boys For Success 2016.
Graduated Doctor of Philosophy in Education with the Distinguished Graduate Award in 2017.  Dissertation title: “Difference of a Counselor Facilitated Adolescent Boys Group on Behavior” (Lessor, 2017).
Published “Generation of Men”-How to raise your son to be a healthy man among men 2019.

I am a proud patriot and retired USAF Captain, with multiple military awards and recognitions.

A member of the White House Council on Men and Boys steering committee since 2019.

Living My Mission

To Create Healthy Lifestyles by Teaching, Facilitating, Research, Writing, and Example

Over 20 years ago I opened my private counseling practice in St. Louis.  I developed and began facilitating a highly successful program called The Quest Project®. Since that time I have facilitated 2000+ male adolescents on a Modern-Day Rite of Passage™ to grow, heal and become responsible young men.  I’m good at it; I know how to quickly uncover and get to the wound an adolescent boy carries.  And I know firsthand just how important it is for a young man to get his life back!

You can find an abundance of knowledge, insight and parenting tips in my weekly blog publications on The Quest Project website.  And…this year I will launch The Quest Project Online in order to reach male adolescents everywhere struggling to become the men they want to be.

Providing balance to this incredible life I lead through service; I founded a not for profit called Charity Patch in 2013.  Charity Patch is an urban garden providing over 2000lbs. fresh produce annually to local food pantries.  There is no greater reward than giving back and helping those less fortunate!

Proud to say this is MY life and how I live it!

COVID-19 Precautions

For over 25 years it has been my pleasure providing mental health wellness and guidance to my clients.  Over the recent weeks we are all faced with challenges, the ability to be flexible and change.

My first priority is to ensure the health and safety of my client.  With the potential spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) I have made decisions that will temporarily affect how I currently provide therapy services.

Effective immediately all group work has been suspended until further notice.
If you are a current client and have concern about individual “in person” sessions, please call your insurance company to request authorization for behavioral health “telephone session(s).”
If you plan to keep your scheduled “in person” session with me, I ask that you do not have any of the identified symptoms found here on the CDC

The health and safety of my clients is the priority now and always, even when there is uncertainty surrounding us.  You can be certain of this – I will never lose focus of my mission “to create healthy lifestyles by teaching, facilitating, research, writing and example.”  This mission drives me in good times and through challenges, to remain focused on the most important thing, you, your family and mine.

We will get through this when we all do our part.

Take care and stay safe,

Dr. Clay

A Year in Review!

Greetings and Happy Holidays to you all!  The Quest Project® is a labor of love, this year was filled with accomplishments and growth.  With your continued dedication and support, together we will help our boys grow into healthy, happy young men.

A Year in Review

The year started with the publication of “Generation of Men-How to raise your son to be a healthy man among men.”  It’s a fathers guide to raising sons and the important role he plays in his son’s life.  To date over 500 books are in the hands of dads that need help and continues to be very popular.

I was invited to become a steering committee member for The Coalition to Create a White House Council for Boys and Men.  We meet bi-weekly to discuss a myriad of issues facing boys and men.

In June the office transformed to a movie set when Peter McGennis and his film crew traveled here from New York to feature The Quest Project in his upcoming documentary “Within Reach.”  We started the day off being interviewed by Channel 2 on the morning show, filmed all day and into the evening.  It was an adventure and experience I’ll never forget!

It was a big year for Charity Patch; we had all three local news stations drop by to cover the great work we do there.  We delivered over 1000 lbs. of fresh produce to the local food pantry! A group of Quest Project graduates (this year we had 8) participate in the work; they learn empathy and the importance of helping others!  I was also surprised to receive the “Pay it Forward” award for my efforts in the garden.

The Blues won the Stanley Cup this year, they were featured on the July cover of St. Louis Magazine, if you look inside you’ll find a wonderful article written by Jeanette Cooperman on The Quest Project!

I was asked to do several interviews with some of St. Louis’s finest journalists:

Art Holliday of KSDK

Jennifer Blome of Big 550

John Carney of KTRS

Carol Daniel of KMOX

John Pertzborn of KTVI

I did a marathon of blogs for the American Counseling Association (ACA), twelve blogs in twelve weeks which you can read here!

Most Importantly

Fifty-two boys have graduated The Quest Project this year, which means there are an additional 52 healthy young men to be celebrated!  These young men worked hard and overcame obstacles too numerous to mention.  I’m proud of each and every one.

Needless to say, it was a very busy year; and we’re just getting started!  Plans for next year are shaping up nicely and are on track to be even more exciting!  Are you curious?  Stay tuned and I’ll give you a sneak peek very soon!

Economically Undesirable Men?

An article published in the Journal of Family and Marriage titled “Mismatches in the Marriage Market” published last month has fired me up; and my hope is it fires you up too!

The article addresses what it calls a shortage of “economically attractive” unmarried men….according to unmarried women!  Unmarried women find the available men undesirable for marriage due to lack of education and income.

As a strong advocate for men and boys you know I have something to say.

“You Go Girl”

Women have gone from girls to women and men from men to boys.  Think back to 1972 and the passing of Title IX; the law intended to correct imbalances as it relates to the sexes.  Was it needed?  Absolutely!  In the process of enacting the new law did we forget someone.  Absolutely…we forgot the boys!

We celebrate ‘moms take your daughter to work day’ and girls are told they can be anything and do anything.  Guys however have been left behind and not quite as nurtured; while girls are being told “you go girl!” Our young men on the other hand are hanging out playing video games in their room or the basement.  Now in just one generation it’s come to this.

What About the Boys?

The very first blog I wrote a couple of years ago was Our Boys Are In Trouble  it addresses this same thing.  Our society has been so focused on equal treatment for females that we have abandon our males.  And before you get upset with that statement, I’m clear that we did need to catch up by providing equal treatment for females, but in the process, we forgot about the males.  An “over-correction” has occurred.

I’m reminded of a conversation with a mom recently.  She has two children, a boy and a girl.  On a trip to the library with the kids she thought it was time to get her son, who loves to read, a book on what happens as he grows to be a man.  She found shelves of books for girls on womanhood but struggled to find anything for her son.  When she asked for assistance, she was shocked to only find two books to choose from for her son.  I rest my case.

Who is teaching young boys to be young men?  I’m trying to do my part through my program The Quest Project® but I can’t do it alone.  Fathers are the best example and mentor for their son, but why have they stopped or given up?  I have fathers asking me how to father because their dad didn’t set an example for them.  This is validation of a systemic problem in our society today.  It is the inspiration for my book “Generation of Men-How to raise your son to be a healthy man among men.”

Do you have a son?  Does this new information surprise you?  Have you taken note of the lack of programs for boys? I hope you feel as I do, this isn’t acceptable.

I learned when I joined The Coalition to Create a White House Council for Boys and Men a White House Council for Girls already exists with an additional 38+ government programs for girls and women; there are 0 for boys and men!  Let’s get our boys busy, involved, educated and let’s demand equal treatment for them too!

Where in The World is Dr. Clay?

What a significant year for The Quest Project®, and for me personally!  Life is a journey and when you allow yourself to grow and expand, it will enhance your mission.

Meeting a New Friend

When Peter McGennis, filmmaker/producer from Buffalo New York, contacted me about featuring The Quest Project in his upcoming documentary “Within Reach” I was admittedly skeptical.  First and foremost, my responsibility to the program is safety!  We proceeded to move the conversation forward with caution!

What I discovered was a genuine interest from Peter to understand when our adolescent boys began to fall behind, and why they are suffering from anxiety and depression etc.

After many lengthy discussions and history of rites of passage, he got it!

“Roadie”

As you know, I read, write, facilitate and research on a regular basis; I’m happy to add that I am now traveling the country observing other men/boys’ programs and learning how other organizations approach healing.

The crew of “Within Reach” as well as the facilitators of these organizations have asked me to join them, and I couldn’t be more honored, now I have the opportunity to add to my research by this experience.

Fire Mountain

The filming started here in St. Louis in June; next stop in July was “Fire Mountain-A Residential Treatment Center for Troubled Teens” in Estes Park, Colorado.  Founder Aaron Huey is rooted in traditional Nordic history; he does great work utilizing visual and physical processes which all boys and men need!

(Aaron and his “circle of men” on film day)

(Dr. Clay imparting some wisdom to young man in Colorado)

Hands on Experience

When I started The Quest Project in 2000, I designed it to provide processes of a modern-day rite of passage.  I have modified it over the years in order to stay relevant to the challenge’s adolescent boys face.  I now can see firsthand how others do the same.

We’ll head for San Diego in September, and plan to visit 9 more destinations before the filming is completed.

What will I discover, who will I impact, how many lives will be changed…mine included!

Stay connected here, on Facebook and twitter to find out as I take you along with me on this very important journey!

News & Updates!

Periodically I like to give you news and updates; a glimpse into what’s going on and what I’m up to!  It’s a very exciting time for The Quest Project® and me personally.  I’ll start with the updates.

What’s Been Going On?

We officially launched my second book “Generation of Men”-How to raise your son to be a healthy man among men the end of January this year.  Instead of tooting my own horn, I’m sharing a couple of the recent reviews it received!

Generation of Men: How to raise your son to be a healthy man among men, details the socio-emotional development that young men experience as they transition from boy to adolescent to manhood. The book effectively articulates how the natural evolution of adolescent development may become derailed due to familial and societal influences. Through Dr. Lessor’s decades of research and his own treatment of young men who have been emotionally bruised and scarred, The Quest Project was born. Dr. Lessor’s program is supported, in large part, on Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The mantra of “It takes a village” rings true to both Bronfenbrenner and Lessor, two men of similar backgrounds. Generation of Men should be required reading of any man in hopes of becoming a father. Mistakes have been made that we can all learn from. Dr. Lessor provides us with how we can best prepare our young men to become positive contributors to society.

Dr. Jason K. Ward, Part-Time Faculty, Professional Studies at Capella University

Once again with courage, competence, and sound counsel, Clayton Lessor addresses one of the persistent issues confronting our culture, “the wounds that all boys share.” In spite of the attacks upon and disfavor of masculinity today, Dr. Lessor courageously makes the case for guiding boys to a healthy mature manhood. In response to his own personal wounds, Dr. Lessor shares how his pursuit has led to a competent, proven means for helping dads (and families) with wounded boys. And finally, he provides solid counsel, and easy to grasp and apply wisdom for those looking for ways to help their sons who may be trapped in a malaise of inactivity and immaturity.

Dr. Michael Morris

It goes without saying, I’m very proud!

For those of you that don’t know, I founded Charity Patch back in 2013.  Charity Patch is a not-for-profit urban garden providing fresh produce to the local food pantries.  After the rain gave us a short window of time to plant, and with the help of a great group of young men from The Quest Project we planted:

250 beets
75 tomato
80 pepper
30 squash
50 green beans
300 corn
8 cucumber
In addition, a little basil, swiss-chard, garlic and chives.

Those who rely on food pantries for assistance don’t always have access to fresh, so we are very proud to make that available.

Coming Soon!

A couple of months back I was contacted by Peter McGennis, a film director and producer out of New York.  Peter asked me and The Quest Project to participate in his upcoming documentary (working title) “Within Reach!” I did my homework, checked him out, did the due diligence to make sure this would be a safe and professional project.  Peter and his team will be here the end of June to shoot footage so stay tuned for updates on the movie.  I’m very excited for this opportunity!

St Louis Magazine’s Jeannette Cooperman recently wrote an article featuring The Quest Project, it’ll be out in the July issue!  Pick one up, I think you’ll appreciate the insight she was given into the program.

Finally, all of St. Louis knows Art Holiday of KSDK-TV and KTRS radio.  He is doing a story as well.  It will feature a family and their son before, during and after The Quest Project program.  More to come on this one but I know Art will do a fabulous job!

This is all going on while I’m running Quest Project boys’ groups, Men and Women weekend workshops, serving The Coalition to Create a White House Council for Boys and Men, an article submission to a professional journal for peer review, as well as multiple local and national interviews!

Stay connected so you don’t miss any of the action!

St. Louis’s Clayton Lessor, PhD, LPC to Join
Coalition for a White House Council on Men and Boys

St. Louis (March 11, 2019) – Local expert and author Dr. Clay Lessor has been appointed to the steering committee for the Coalition for a White House Council on Men and Boys.  Dr. Lessor has dedicated his professional counseling practice to the study and successful treatment of young boys who are experiencing difficulties in the transition from boyhood to manhood.

The Coalition is seeking final approval from the White House for funding to support the program, which is already in operation.   A multi-partisan commission of many of the nation’s leading experts have articulated five components to the boy crisis, and suggested solutions, including the coordination of a White House Council on Boys and Men. Read the full proposal. Watch a video explaining the crisis.

Dr. Lessor will be sharing his expertise and research gained from his highly successful Quest Project, which has helped more than 2000 boys in the St. Louis area.  The ten-week program identifies, heals, guides and equips modern boys to become responsible men.

Dr. Clay recently completed his second book, Generation of Men: How to Raise Your Son to Be a Healthy Man Among Men, now available on Amazon.
