My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray & Laura Kamoie

My Dear Hamilton - Riveting historical fiction.
My Dear Hamilton is a riveting historical fiction novel on the life of Alexander Hamilton as told from his wife's perspective. The story begins with the Revolutionary War when Hamilton is a dashing soldier and aide to George Washington. When Eliza first meets him at a dance, she is taken in by his good looks and charm, although his reputation as a ladies' man precedes him. Despite her reservations, they fall in love and marry.

In the years after the war, Hamilton became an important and sometimes controversial statesman and a primary leader of the Federalist party. He publishes numerous essays, articles, and letters, many of which are quoted from in this book. In the meantime, Eliza gives birth to his eight children, all while supporting his political career. From the outside, their marriage looks perfect, but it is not without hardship. Most people know the story of Hamilton's illicit affair with a married woman, however, told from Eliza's viewpoint, his betrayal is magnified. What stands out the most, is Eliza's willingness to forgive him and forge ahead.

After Hamilton's death in the famous duel he fought with Aaron Burr, it became Eliza's time to shine. She works tirelessly to assist widows and orphans while taking care of her many children on the sparse inheritance left to her. She also devotes herself to preserving her husband's legacy by collecting as many of his writings as possible to be included in his biography. Little did she know, how much would be written about him since!

This is the third book I've read about Hamilton and perhaps the best. The story reads like a dramatic family tale, rich in history and period detail. There are many important side characters, including: Washington, Lafayette, Madison, Monroe and Jefferson. Not to mention Eliza's beloved older sister, Angelica, who also plays a pivotal role. If you like historical fiction, or are fascinated by the story of Hamilton as I am, you might enjoy My Dear Hamilton. The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

The Great Alone - Emotional family saga.
The Great Alone is an emotional family saga that takes place in the wilderness of Alaska. Adrift after serving in the Vietnam War, Ernt Allbright moves his family from Washington to the remote outreaches of Alaska. For his thirteen-year-old daughter, Leni, the change in scenery is both refreshing and frightening. When the long, bitter cold winter descends on Alaska, her father's behavior becomes erratic and violent. And being isolated in a tiny cabin in the woods, Leni has nowhere to hide. The one bright spot in the story is when she meets Matthew, a boy her age who becomes her best friend, and later, much more. The story takes a dramatic turn when Ernt tries to prevent Leni from seeing Matthew. In her defiance, she becomes subject to her father's abuse, and Leni and her mother start to plan their escape. When Matthew tries to help, he becomes seriously injured, and the course of their lives is changed forever.

While reading The Great Alone, I had mixed feelings. I liked learning about Alaska and what it's like to live in the back country. However, the story was very dark and dismal overall, with only a few bright spots scattered throughout. Just when you become hopeful that Leni and her mother will be able to start over, they suffer another setback. While the writing is engaging, and the story and characters well-developed, the book left me feeling drained. Toward the end, I just wanted it to be done. If you're a fan of family sagas, and/or Kristin Hannah, you may like The Great Alone. Personally, I would recommend some of her other books over this one, in particular, The Nightingale.

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

The Wedding Date - Cute Contemporary Romance.
The Wedding Date is a cute contemporary romance between two people with different backgrounds who experience an immediate attraction. Alexa is a black government worker from Berkeley, and Drew is a white pediatric surgeon from Los Angeles. They're the only two people on a hotel elevator when the power goes out and they're stuck there for a while. Surprising them both, Drew asks Alexa to accompany him to a wedding the next day, and she says yes! Neither of them expect the wedding date to turn into a full-fledged romance, especially since they live so far apart and travel in different circles. But as in any good love story, obstacles are meant to be overcome! The Wedding Date is a sweet, if somewhat predictable story, with likable characters and realistic circumstances. There are a lot of steamy scenes, however, they aren't overly explicit. The story is fast-paced and engaging, and it has a real sweetness to it. If you're a fan of sweet and sexy romance novels with a twist, you may also enjoy The Wedding Date. Be sure to visit my website for more romance novels reviews.
