The Dutch Wife by Ellen Keith
The Dutch Wife - Thought provoking historical fiction.
The Dutch Wife is a thought provoking historical fiction novel about one woman's experience in a German concentration camp. Marijke and her husband, Theo, are arrested and sent to a concentration camp for aiding Jews during the round-ups. Shortly after their arrival, Marijke is selected to work in the camp brothel, and Theo is assigned to hard labor. Throughout her time in the brothel, Marijke's goal is to survive so she can eventually be reunited with her husband. While there, an SS officer, Karl, becomes enamored with her, sending her gifts, and giving her preferential treatment. Marijke struggles with the idea of cavorting with the enemy although without his help, she may not be able to survive.
Intermingled with Marijke's story, is the tale of Luciano, a political prisoner in Argentina in the late 1970's. The connection between his story and Marijke's is revealed at the end.
I've read numerous WWII novels, and while they have similar themes, The Dutch Wife is unique. According to the author's note, brothels existed at several of the concentration camps, yet this detail is rarely mentioned. This story begs the question: What would you do in order to stay alive among such atrocities? It also illustrates one woman's strength and determination to survive in the name of love.
If you're a fan of WWII fiction, you might like The Dutch Wife. For more historical fiction recommendations, visit my website.

The Perfect Distraction coming soon!
The Perfect Distraction coming soon!
The Perfect Distraction, book one of my new romance series, is coming soon! This novel is set in the charming town of Harbor Springs, Michigan, one of my favorite places to visit. The series centers around the lives and loves of three sisters: Beth, Becca, and Brooke.
In The Perfect Distraction, Beth (the oldest sister), is spending an entire summer in Harbor Springs at her aunt's "cottage." She goes there to heal her broken heart, but surprises are in store when she meets her hunky neighbor, Colton, and his young son, Joey.
Look for The Perfect Distraction to be released in late October, 2018.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Dramatic historical fiction.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a dramatic historical fiction novel based on the real-life experiences of Lale Sokolov, a former prisoner of Auschwitz. Lale, a well-educated Jewish man, was given the task of tattooing prisoners with their assigned number as they came into camp. His position came with certain "privileges" that his fellow inmates didn't have such as extra food and blankets. Lale also had more freedom to move around the camp which he used to his advantage and to help others.
He found a way to exchange money and jewelry (that was unloaded from the prisoners when they first arrived) for food, which he then distributed to his friends and others in need. Throughout the hardships, beatings, death threats, and illnesses, Lale was determined to survive. He became even more motivated once he met Gita, a fellow prisoner who he instantly fell in love with.
After spending over two years at Auschwitz, the Russians finally arrived to liberate the camp, however, Lale's struggles weren't over. He and Gita became separated in the chaos, and it would be quite some time before they were reunited.
The Tattooist of Auschwitz is an engaging, heart-wrenching tale of love, friendship, survival, and perseverance. I have read numerous Holocaust stories, and this one ranks right up there as one of the best. My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed. I would have liked to read more about Lale and Gita's life after they were released from Auschwitz.
