Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
Before We Were Yours - Fascinating realistic fiction.
Before We Were Yours is a realistic fiction novel based on true events. In 1939, five young siblings are stolen from their riverboat home near Memphis, Tennessee. The children are taken to the Tennessee Children's Home orphanage where they're given new names and put up for adoption. Rill, the oldest daughter, makes it her mission to keep her siblings together, but one by one they're adopted until she's the last one left. Interwoven with Rill's tale, is the story of Avery Stafford, the daughter of a US senator. In present times, Avery has a chance encounter with the aged Rill (renamed May) at a nursing home. While they're talking, Avery notices an old photograph of May with Avery's grandmother, but May's explanation doesn't ring true. As Avery investigates May's connection to her grandmother, she discovers that her family history is not what she thought it was, and it upends her whole world.
While the characters in the book are fictional, there are many details based on historical facts. From the 1930's to the 1950's, many young children were snatched from their homes, schools, hospitals, etc., and taken to the Tennessee Children's Home that was run by a woman named Georgia Tann. The conditions were poor, and many children died before they were adopted. Siblings were separated and placed in homes throughout the country, and very few of them ever reunited with their birth families. In later years, when the wrong-doing was brought to light, Georgia Tann was on her deathbed, and she was never prosecuted. It took me a few chapters to get into the story, but once I did, I was hooked. If you like realistic fiction with historical elements, you may like Before We Were Yours.

Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren
Love and Other Words - Tender, emotional women's fiction.
Love and Other Words is a tender, emotional women's fiction novel by the writing duo Christina Lauren. The tale revolves around Macy and Elliot, who first meet as young teenagers. Macy has just lost her mom, and her father buys them a weekend retreat in upstate California. It's here that Macy meets Elliot, a tall, gangly, boy with glasses who loves to read. They form an instant bond over books, and over the course of time, they become the best of friends. Everything changes during Macy's senior year in high school, when she and Elliot cross the line from friendship to something more. But then, in a terrible twist of fate, they are pulled apart, and she doesn't see him again for eleven years.
Macy is engaged when she runs into Elliot at a coffee shop, and seeing him again turns her orderly world upside down. At first, she attempts to reconnect with him as friends, but the attraction between them still exists. Now they have a second chance at love, but first, they have to confront their painful past. I have read several books by Christina Lauren, and Love and Other Words now ranks as one of my favorites. The characters are likable and well-drawn, and the emotions are raw and vivid. Anyone who remembers the intensity of their first love should be able to relate to this story. Besides the romance between the primary characters there are themes of friendship, family, and loss. Love and Other Words is one of my favorite reads of the year so far. For more reviews of Christina Lauren books, click here.
