The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

The Underground Railroad - Intense historical drama.
The Underground Railroad is an intense historical drama about the life of an escaped slave. Cora and another slave head north after escaping their brutal owner on a cotton plantation in Georgia. They're helped by "conductors" of the underground railroad system, and make it as far as South Carolina where they become part of a free black community. Eventually, a ruthless slave catcher and his cohorts find Cora, but she manages to escape again with the help of a free black man named Royal. Cora makes it as far north as Indiana before she's captured once again, but you'll have to read the book to find out what happens next. While The Underground Railroad reads like an adventure, there's no denying the terrible suffering and tragedies that occur throughout the story. There are several characters that are integral to the plot, including those who want to help Cora and those who want to harm her. Despite the seriousness of the topic, a thread of hopefulness is woven throughout. One can't help but be impressed by the courage and strength of the main character and those like her, who escaped their chains of bondage to become free. If you like books about this topic, I would also highly recommend The Invention of Wings.

On Broken Wings by Chanel Cleeton

On Broken Wings - Emotional, sizzling romance.
On Broken Wings (book three of the Wild Aces series) is an emotional, sizzling contemporary romance. Dani lost her husband, an F-16 fighter pilot, a year ago and she's still grieving. Surrounded by other members of the squadron and their wives, she slowly begins to heal. And then there's Alex (nicknamed Easy). He was one of her husband's best friends, and now he's become one of hers. As their friendship grows, romantic feelings surface, making Dani feel guilty and confused. But she can't seem to stay away from Easy, and on the night before he's set to deploy to another country, their passion explodes, taking them down a path that neither one of them expected. What I really liked about this novel, is the realness of the characters and their intense emotions. The reader can feel Dani's pain, uncertainty, and guilt, as well as identify with Easy who's acting out of love for a woman that he never thought he could have. Every interaction between the two characters is fraught with emotion, and the sex scenes sizzle! If you're a fan of sweet and sexy contemporary romance, you might enjoy On Broken Wings. For other novels with strong alpha males and plenty of sizzle, I would also recommend books by Lori Foster.

Last Christmas in Paris by H. Gaynor and H. Webb

Last Christmas in Paris - A novel of love, loss, and friendship during WWI
Last Christmas in Paris is a historical fiction novel of love, loss, and friendship during WWI. Thomas Harding, a handsome young man from England, and his best friend, Will Elliott, enlist in the Great War in 1914. Fueled with optimism and a sense of honor, they leave their families and friends behind to fret over them, especially Evie Elliott, Will's sister. The story is told through a series of letters, the most poignant being between Thomas and Evie, whose relationship evolves from friendship into love. The letters also illustrate the horrific conditions of wartime France and the tragedies that occur there on a daily basis. As the war drags on and the losses add up, Evie becomes determined to aid in the war effort. She begins writing a column for the London newspaper owned by Thomas' family commenting on the war from a woman's perspective. Eventually, she enlists in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps as a telephone operator. This puts Evie closer to the Front and closer to Thomas, however, they rarely get to see each other until the war ends in 1918. Last Christmas in Paris is a fast-paced novel that focuses more on the relationships between the characters than the war itself. If you enjoy novels about the world wars, you may like Last Christmas in Paris. I have also read and enjoyed The Girl Who Came Home (a novel about the Titanic) by Hazel Gaynor.

I, Eliza Hamilton by Susan Holloway Scott

I, Eliza Hamilton - History, Romance, and Heartbreak.
I, Eliza Hamilton is a historical fiction novel based on the lives of Eliza and Alexander Hamilton as told from Eliza's perspective. The story begins with the couple's first meeting at her parents' home where Eliza is instantly attracted to the handsome, dynamic soldier. Some time later, they begin a courtship that will lead to marriage. Eliza and Alexander's love affair is full of passion and romance, however, they encounter their share of problems too. Alexander is ambitious almost to a fault, and can't be content in one position for long. He becomes George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolution and stays by his side throughout Washington's presidency. Soldier, lawyer, writer, speaker, and staunch Federalist, Alexander becomes widely known and respected in some circles, yet despised and ridiculed in others. His political career takes him away from home for long periods which is difficult on Eliza, especially once they have children. Still, Eliza remains her husband's most stalwart supporter, assisting him with his work whenever she can among her household duties. Together, they experience many blissful years, but some are mired in tragedy as they lose close friends and relatives to fever outbreaks. Despite Alexander's frequent absences, he and Eliza have eight children together, although they lose their oldest son in a duel a few years prior to Alexander's death. If you're familiar with the story already, none of this is surprising. What struck me about this book is the way in which Eliza is depicted and especially her incredible strength. By the sounds of it, Alexander wasn't an easy man to live with, however, her love for him was so deep and unfailing, that setbacks (including his infamous betrayal) only served to strengthen their relationship. It's amazing to think that after all she suffered, Eliza lived to be ninety-seven years old, lauding her husband's accomplishments until the very end. If you're a fan of American historical fiction, you might enjoy I, Eliza Hamilton. My only complaint is that sometimes the story reads more like a history book than a novel, which makes it seem longer than it is. I would also recommend The Hamilton Affair which covers the same material but at a faster, more readable pace.
