Beneath A Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
Beneath A Scarlet Sky - Riveting World War II Fiction.
Beneath A Scarlet Sky is a riveting World War II tale based on a true story. Pino Lella, is an Italian teenager at the height of the war who cares more about cars and girls than the state of his country. That all changes when Pino is sent to a Catholic boys school in the mountains outside of Milan. There he becomes involved in the resistance movement by helping Jews escape into Switzerland. When the trek becomes too dangerous, he returns to his family and joins the army--on the wrong side! Pino becomes a driver for a high-ranking Nazi General and reports the General's barbaric actions to the resistance leaders. In the midst of the chaos, Pino falls in love with Anna, a maid to the mistress of the Nazi General. She joins Pino in the fight against the Germans with devastating consequences. Beneath a Scarlet Sky is a lengthy novel but it is engaging and action-packed right up until the end. What makes it more fascinating is that it's based on the true story of a young man who showed incredible bravery and strength during horrific times. Pino somehow managed to escape the war unscathed although forever scarred by the horrors he witnessed. This book has it all: history, intrigue, romance, friendship, and family. Note: There are several violent scenes given the subject matter, however, for fans of World War II fiction I would highly recommend this book. Beneath A Scarlet Sky is one of my favorite historical reads this year. For more historical fiction recommendations, click here.

Hard As You Can by Laura Kaye
Hard As You Can - Edgy romantic suspense.
Hard As You Can is book 2 of the Hard Ink Series. This is an edgy romantic suspense story involving Shane, an ex-Special Forces medic, and Crystal, a waitress at a strip club who's trying to escape her rough life. Shane and some of his ex-Army buddies have formed a vigilante team, and they are trying to bring down an organized crime group. Crystal's boyfriend, Bruno, is part of the criminal group, and when Shane and Crystal meet she agrees to help him. Crystal has been making plans to leave Bruno and her dead-end job behind, but she needs the money to support her and her sister, Jenna, until they can make their escape. Working alongside Shane, Crystal can't help but fall in love with him, and the feeling is mutual. However, they can't truly be together until Bruno is out of the picture. This is the second book I've read from the Hard Ink Series, and although I've read them out of order the story still makes sense. There is a lot of action, and some violence, however, there are sweet and sexy scenes too. If you like romance novels with an edge, you may enjoy Hard As You Can. I would also recommend Lori Foster, who writes similar stories about tough alpha-males and the women they love.

Come Sundown by Nora Roberts
Come Sundown - Another engaging romantic suspense novel from Roberts.
Come Sundown is an engaging romantic suspense novel from the master, Nora Roberts. This is the story of the Longbow family who own a ranch/resort in rural Montana. At the center is Bodine, an ambitious, hard-working young woman who runs the resort. When one of her female employees is found dead, the Longbow family is reminded of the mysterious disappearance of Bodine's Aunt Alice years ago. The story alternates between Bodine's peaceful life and blossoming love affair with Callen, a ranch hand, and Alice's terror-filled life as a captive of a crazed lunatic. The stories converge when Alice is able to escape and reunites with the Longbow family, but her captor is still at large. An unexpected twist at the end will keep readers on the edge of their seat waiting to see how the story plays out. If you are a Nora Roberts fan, you will probably enjoy Come Sundown. I have read a great many of her novels, and this book ranks right up there with the best of them. I don't know how she does it, but she manages to make each story fresh and new while using familiar themes of family, love, and friendship wrapped in mystery. Check out my reviews of some of Nora's most recent romantic suspense novels.

The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand
The Identicals - Engaging family drama.
The Identicals is Hilderbrand's latest family drama set on the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. This story centers around identical twins, Tabitha and Harper Frost, who couldn't be more different. After their parents divorced when they were teens, Tabitha lived with their mother on Nantucket, and Harper moved with their father to Martha's Vineyard. Even though they lived only a short distance away, their lives became vastly different and they were essentially estranged. When their father dies, the two sisters are thrust back together and slowly begin to mend the tears in their relationship, although there are a lot of bumps along the way. At one point Tabitha and Harper trade places; Harper moves in with her niece on Nantucket while Tabitha renovates their father's tumble-down house on Martha's Vineyard. Tabitha finds love with the contractor she hires to work on the house while Harper runs their mother's clothing shop on Nantucket. In true Hilderbrand fashion, there are a lot of additional characters in the story as well as a good many twists and turns. I find her novels to be mostly enjoyable and engaging, however, with all of the characters and sub-plots, they can become confusing at times. If you enjoy family dramas with a touch of humor, you may like The Identicals. If you've never read Hilderbrand before, check out my other reviews of her books.

The Stars Are Fire by Anita Shreve
The Stars Are Fire - How a massive fire changed one woman's life.
The Stars Are Fire is part historical fiction, part women's fiction as it tells the story of how a raging fire in Maine changed one woman's life. Grace is pregnant and living on the coast of Maine with her husband, Gene, and their two children when a massive fire breaks out in 1947. Many of the men, including Gene, pitch in to contain the fire as it sweeps up the coast destroying just about everything in it's path. Grace and her children survive by lying in the sand with half of their bodies submerged in the ocean until they are rescued. Afterwards, Grace discovers that their house is burned to the ground and her husband is nowhere to be found. For the next several months, Grace relies on the help of her mother and her mother's friends to begin rebuilding her life. She and the children eventually move into her deceased mother-in-law's house that survived the fire. What she finds there changes her life for the better, but then Gene returns, almost unrecognizable from his burns, and everything Grace has built comes crashing down around her. I have read several books by Anita Shreve, and I find her stories to be haunting and provocative. She writes in short clipped sentences that evoke vivid images and powerful messages. The Stars Are Fire covers a wide range of topics including love, friendship, family, and betrayal, but overall, it speaks to a woman's strength under duress. If you like historical fiction centered around a female character, I would also recommend The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah.

Egomaniac by Vi Keeland
Egomaniac - A sexy office romance.
Egomaniac is a sexy office romance between two unlikely people. Emerie is a marriage counselor who shares office space with Drew, a divorce attorney for men. Emerie and Drew meet under unique circumstances when she rents office space from him without his knowledge. When he returns from a business trip to find her there, he's instantly attracted to her even though he doesn't want to be. He's a divorced single dad who likes women but no longer believes in committed relationships. At first Emerie writes Drew off as a cocky player, but as she gets to know him she realizes that he's also sweet, funny, and fiercely loyal. When Drew's ex-wife causes trouble for him in regards to their son, Emerie steps in to support him and falls in love in the process. I really enjoyed Egomaniac for it's flirty banter, sweet and sassy characters, and steamy love scenes. This is the third book I've read by Vi Keeland and I plan to read more. If you're a fan of sexy, witty romance novels with a happily ever after ending, you might like Egomaniac. I would also recommend Christina Lauren who has a similar writing style.

My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella
My Not So Perfect Life - Country girl takes London (or tries to).
My Not So Perfect Life is a humorous story of a country girl who tries to make it in corporate London. Katie Brenner escapes her life as a farm girl from the English countryside to take a marketing job in London. If only her life was as glamorous as she imagined it would be! Katie lives in a tiny flat that she shares with two quirky Londoners and is at the low end of the totem pole at work. She can't help but be envious of her boss, Demeter Farlowe, who appears to have the perfect life. Demeter is attractive, wealthy, and talented, with a beautiful family to boot. She is also despised by most of her subordinates for being flaky, inconsiderate, and arrogant. But all Katie sees is Demeter's successes, until a series of events shed a different light on Demeter's life. When Katie is let go from her job, she slinks back home to regroup, although she doesn't tell her family that she was fired. Her father and stepmother have taken on a project to turn their farm into a retreat for "glampers." Katie delves into the marketing aspect of the project, and it becomes a huge success. Her life takes another turn when Demeter and her family show up to the "glampground," followed by Alex, another of Katie's bosses who she's secretly had a crush on. This is the second novel that I've read by Kinsella, and I enjoy her writing style, sense of humor, and quirky characters. There are some madcap antics that take place that are a bit far-fetched, however, the story is engaging throughout. If you like humorous women's fiction with a touch of romance, you might enjoy My Not So Perfect Life. I would also recommend books by Jenny Colgan, who has a similar writing style.
