The Cherry Harvest by Lucy Sanna
The Cherry Harvest - Engaging WWII Drama.
The Cherry Harvest is an historical fiction novel set in Wisconsin during WWII. Farm-owners Thomas and Charlotte Christiansen, are having difficulty feeding their family of three, while their son Ben is overseas fighting the war. In their desperation, they agree to let a group of German POW's work their land during the cherry harvest with devastating consequences. One of the prisoners, Karl, is a handsome well-educated man who becomes a tutor for Kate, the Christiansen's teenage daughter. At first Charlotte is leery to invite the prisoner into their home, but then she develops an overwhelming attraction to him. When Charlotte is attacked by another prisoner, Karl comes to her rescue drawing them even closer together. Kate becomes suspicious of her mother and Karl, when she witnesses some strange interactions between them, but she is hiding her own relationship with a wealthy boy on a neighboring farm. The Cherry Harvest is a fast-paced novel that is part suspense, part romance, and part history. The reader is made to empathize with the struggles that these characters face during wartime. When Ben returns home wounded and broken, the story wraps up with a series of startling events. If you like WWII fiction that centers around a family drama, you may enjoy The Cherry Harvest. I would also recommend The Nightingale , one of my all-time favorite war dramas.

After the War is Over by Jennifer Robson
After the War is Over - Post WW1 Historical Fiction.
After the War is Over is a historical fiction novel set in England after WW1. This is a story of Charlotte, an ex-military nurse who works for a government relief agency. The devastating effects of the war are found everywhere, including close to home. Charlotte's former employer and best friend's brother, Edward, returned from the front with a missing limb and a shattered soul. When his sister, Lilly, asks Charlotte for help rehabilitating Edward, she can't refuse, for she's secretly in love with him. Charlotte and Edward spend a month together in a secluded cabin where she aids in his recovery. Afterwards, she returns to Liverpool, knowing that she may never have a future with him because of his title as Earl of Cumberland. Charlotte returns to her work with fervor, and begins writing newspaper articles to illustrate the dire needs of the people. This is the second novel that I've read by Robson, but I enjoyed the first one more. I found After the War is Over to be slow-moving and dull at times. If you like reading WW1 fiction, I would recommend Somewhere in France , which takes place during the war and has a lot more action.

After We Fall by Melanie Harlow
After We Fall - Sexy romance between a city girl and a country boy.
After We Fall is a contemporary romance between a city girl from Detroit and a country boy who owns a farm in Michigan's thumb. Margot, a rich girl from the Detroit suburbs, meets Jack, a farmer, when his family hires her as a marketing specialist. Jack is a widow and an ex-Army guy with a lot of emotional baggage. Margot has just come off of a failed relationship and is looking for a fresh start out from under her wealthy parents' watchful eye. When Margot and Jack first meet, they feel an instant attraction, however, Jack is determined not to act on it. The more time that Margot spends on his farm getting to know him and his family, the more their attraction grows, until one sexy encounter in the woods leads to another and another... Their relationship can't move forward, however, until Jack lets go of his painful past. There are a lot of emotional ups and downs in this book, along with a lot of steamy sex scenes. There is also a healthy dose of humor to soften the rough edges. This is the second novel that I've read by Melanie Harlow and I will definitely read more. If you like romance with edgy alpha-male heroes, you may enjoy After We Fall. I would also recommend Lori Foster, who writes similar characters.

What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan
What She Knew - Gripping realistic suspense.
What She Knew is a terrifying story about the disappearance of a young boy. Rachel is enjoying a walk through a wooded park one day with her eight-year-old son, Ben, and their dog, Skittle. When Ben asks if he can run up ahead and meet her at the swing, Rachel agrees. Sadly, those would be the last words she spoke to him, because when Rachel reaches the swing there is no sign of her son anywhere. What follows is a crazy series of events where several suspects come into question, including Ben's Aunt Nicky and two of his teachers. In the meantime, Rachel is consumed with guilt, as is Ben's father, John, who had left his family a year ago for another woman. Numerous twists and turns in the tale keep the reader guessing all the way until the end. What She Knew is a fiction novel that at times reads like true crime. The story is told from alternate points of view of Rachel and the primary police detective on the case which makes it feel very real. If you're a fan of suspense fiction, and have liked books such as Gone Girl, or Girl on the Train, you may also like What She Knew.

Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe by Jenny Colgan
Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe - A sweet tale of new beginnings.
Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe is the third book that I've read by Jenny Colgan. In this story, Issy Randall is at a crossroads. She is laid off from her job at a real estate development company, and she loses her boyfriend (who is also her boss) at the same time. Issy's true love is baking, and when she discovers a vacant storefront in her quaint neighborhood she begins to dream of opening her own cafe. Slowly, with the help of her friends and her new employees, Issy's dream becomes a reality. However, while her business becomes a success her love life is still in shambles. Issy goes back to her ex-boyfriend for a time even though she realizes that he is not the one for her. Issy is much more interested in the unassuming banker who she met when obtaining a business loan. This story is similar to Colgan's other novels in that they're all about a woman reinventing herself. At times, I felt that the story dragged, however, I still enjoyed the premise as well as Colgan's charming method of story-telling. If you like women's fiction that has an old-fashioned quality to it with themes of love and friendship, give Jenny Colgan a try. My particular favorite is The Bookshop on the Corner.

Kiss Me If You Can by Carly Phillips
Kiss Me If You Can - Light romantic read.
Kiss Me If You Can is a contemporary romance novel featuring Lexie, a web-designer, and Sam (Coop), a crime reporter. Sam becomes a hero when he stops some real-life criminals from robbing a jewelry store. His reward is an antique ring that eventually brings him and Lexie together. When Lexie reads about the robbery in the newspaper, she realizes that the ring matches a necklace owned by her grandmother. Lexie tracks Sam down in an attempt to buy the ring from him, and they are instantly attracted to each other. In researching the jewelry's history, Sam and Lexie discover that the ring and it's matching pieces were stolen years ago, which brings Lexie's grandmother into question. Sam and Lexie work together to unravel the mystery, and fall in love in the process. This is the first novel that I've read by Carly Phillips, although she has written many. The story kept my interest, however I felt like the sizzle between the characters was just so-so. There seemed to be more focus on the mystery than the romance, but I enjoyed the story overall. If you're looking for a light romance, you may like Kiss Me If You Can. If you're interested in fun romance novels with a little more steam, I recommend Lauren Blakely.
