A New Chapter Coming Soon!

A New Chapter - Excerpt

My third contemporary romance novel, A New Chapter, will be released soon.  Here's an excerpt:

Holy wow!  Zack stood at the stove with his back to her while he cracked eggs into a pan… shirtless!  He was clad in a pair of Superman boxer shorts and nothing else.  The vision was enough to make Emma feel dizzy all over again, and as she leaned against the wall for support she bumped against a kitchen chair, causing a loud clatter.

Zack whipped his head around and broke out in a huge grin.  “Well, well, look who’s finally up.”

Emma didn’t know where to look.  Now that he faced her full-on, the vision was even more spectacular.  She had seen the exercise room in his house and knew that he liked to lift weights.  That explained the defined biceps, shoulders and pecs, tapering down to a narrow waist, and that sexy indention where his boxers hung low on his hips.  Even the man’s feet were sexy!  Add in the olive-toned skin, just-woke-up wavy black hair and that confident-as-all-hell smile…

In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

In a Dark Dark Wood - Engaging Psychological Thriller.
In a Dark Dark Wood is a story of a bachelorette party gone horribly wrong.  A handful of the bride's friends have been invited to a remote country house on the outskirts of London for a weekend celebration.  Nora is one of them.  She has known Clare, the bride, since their teen years, when they both fell for the same boy, James.  It's now ten years later and Clare imparts the news that James is the intended groom.  The weekend is full of awkward exchanges, too much alcohol and strange games including skeet shooting and a ouija board.  A series of events lead up to an accidental shooting of an intruder who entered the home uninvited and someone has decided to pin the blame on Nora.  The story moved rather slow at first and I questioned the direction of the plot.  The second half of the tale was much more engaging and as more details came out, it was like solving a puzzle one piece at a time. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, similar to Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train , you might also like In a Dark Dark Wood, which like the other two books, will soon become a motion picture.

Where We Belong by Emily Giffin

Touching Family Story
Where We Belong is a general fiction novel by the author of First Comes Love.  Marian and Conrad fall in love at age eighteen, even though they are from vastly different worlds.  It is the summer before college and when Marian "accidentally" becomes pregnant she is devastated.  Faced with difficult choices, Marian decides to break off her relationship with Conrad (without telling him about the pregnancy) and decides to give the baby up for adoption.  Fast forward eighteen years, and Marian's life is upended again, when her beautiful daughter Kirby Rose, shows up at her doorstep.  Marian and Kirby slowly form a relationship and it doesn't take long before Kirby wants to find her biological father.  Together, they embark on a journey to find Conrad, which unleashes long-buried emotions from Marian's past.  This story was warm, and touching, and real.  Giffin switches back and forth between Marian's and Kirby's point of view which worked well.  By the end of the book, I felt emotionally attached to the characters and the outcome.  If you haven't read anything by Emily Giffin and/or you like family dramas, I would highly recommend Where We Belong.

Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Humorous Sports Romance
Match Me If You Can is book 6 of the Chicago Stars Series.  In this story, Annabelle, a "professional" matchmaker, has been hired by Heath, a wealthy sports agent, to find his perfect match.  In the beginning, Annabelle can hardly stand the sight of the cocky, emotionally unavailable man, but as she gets to know him, she discovers his softer side.  Determined not to get involved with her client, Annabelle introduces Heath to women that fit perfectly into his high-profile lifestyle, however, he rejects them one after another.  When Annabelle and Heath go on a weekend retreat with mutual friends, their relationship heats up, but afterwards, Annabelle pushes Heath away, believing that she's not the one for him.  This is the first book that I've read by Phillips and I have mixed feelings about it.  I liked the main characters, but some of the side characters were distracting to me.  I usually enjoy romantic comedies, but some of the humor felt overly contrived.  Perhaps if I were more of a sports fan or if I would have read the first book in the series, I would have been more engaged in the story.  That said, if you enjoy lighthearted sports-related romance, you may like Match Me If You Can.

Well Hung by Lauren Blakely

Well Hung is a steamy contemporary romance novel, as you might have guessed from the title!  Told from the male perspective, this is the story of Wyatt Hammer (pun intended) and his co-worker Natalie.  Wyatt owns his own construction company and Natalie is his very organized and sexy assistant.  At the beginning, Wyatt is determined to keep his relationship with Natalie strictly professional, however, when they fly to Vegas together with a prospective client, all bets are off!  After too much celebrating, Wyatt and Natalie take their relationship full-speed ahead into the romance zone, and end up at a Vegas wedding chapel.  Once they sober up and realize what they've done, they make an attempt to rectify the situation.  In the time it takes to get an annulment, Wyatt and Natalie discover that what happened in Vegas might not have been a mistake after all.  Sounds like a familiar theme, right?  Well, it is, however, Blakely is very adept at writing snappy dialog and creating sizzling rapport between her characters.  If you like your romance novels on the steamy side, and don't feel the need to hide the book's title, Well Hung could be for you!

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

Three Wishes is a women's fiction novel by the author of the popular title, The Husband's Secret.  This is the story of triplets, three sisters who share much more than just their birthday.  Cat is a marketing rep for a chocolatier and her life is turned upside down with the discovery of her husband's infidelity.  Lynn owns her own catering company and juggles her career with the demands of motherhood.  Gemma is a house-sitter who has been a serial dater since the death of her fiance years ago.  The story explores the love/hate relationship between the three siblings along with the relationship they have with their parents, spouses and children.  This is the fifth book that I've read by Moriarty and I've enjoyed them all. She has a distinct method of injecting humor into otherwise serious situations, thus, allowing the reader to experience a myriad of emotions.  At times touching and sad, and at others laugh-out-loud funny, Three Wishes was an engaging read.  If you like women's fiction that explores family relationships with humor and heart, give Moriarty a try.  I don't think that you'll be disappointed.

Naked in Death by J.D. Robb

Naked in Death is the first book in the popular romantic suspense series, In Death, by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts).  Even though this book is quite old (1995), I chose it because several people indicated that the primary male character, Roarke, was their favorite "book boyfriend."  In the start to the series, Eve Dallas, a tough New York City cop, is called to a grisly murder scene of a prostitute.  The case garners a great deal of attention because the murder victim is the granddaughter of a U.S. Senator with staunch conservative views.  As Eve investigates, she meets Roarke, a wealthy, handsome Irishman, who is a friend of the dead prostitute's family.  Even though Roarke is also considered a suspect, Eve can't help but be charmed by him, and they soon form a romantic relationship.  In the meantime, two other prostitutes are murdered and Eve has also been threatened.  I have read several books by Nora Roberts and she is a master at weaving an engaging story that combines mystery and romance.  After reading this book, I can understand why Roarke is a favorite character.  I would compare him to Christian Grey minus the "red room."  There are over 40 books in the In Death series, and I plan to read more in the future.  If you like mysteries or crime thrillers with a healthy dose of romance mixed in, you might also enjoy Naked in Death.
