Two By Two by Nicholas Sparks
Two By Two is the latest family drama by popular author, Nicholas Sparks. This story is told from the perspective of the male lead character, Russ, a hard-working family man with a wife, Vivian, and a young daughter, London. From the outside Russ's life seems idyllic--he's a successful advertising executive with a beautiful wife and daughter. However, his life slowly begins to unravel; first, with the loss of his job, and then, with the demise of his marriage. When Russ decides to start his own advertising company, Vivian chooses to go back to work after years of being a stay-at-home mom. The changes in the family dynamic wreak havoc on their marriage, and Russ essentially becomes a single dad. This was a very long book, and the majority of the story was depressing. There were a few redeeming aspects, such as, Russ becoming closer to his daughter, Russ's loving relationship with his sister, and when he reunites with an old flame. That said, I didn't particularly like or relate to the main characters. Russ was often depicted as a spineless pushover, and Vivian, was portrayed as a selfish witch (with a "b"). It was difficult to feel sorry for them at times, and it wasn't until the end, when something unthinkable happens, that I actually started to like Russ. This review was very difficult for me to write, because I am a Nicholas Sparks fan, however, this is not one of his best books. Of his more recent novels, I am much more fond of The Longest Ride. Still, for those of you who are die-hard fans, you may like Two By Two.

The Trouble With Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis
The Trouble With Mistletoe is a romantic comedy starring Willa, a pet shop owner, and Keane, a real estate developer. Willa and Keane first met in high school, although, when their paths cross again, Keane doesn't appear to remember her. Keane's aunt is ill and has asked him to cat-sit for her. Since Keane is busy working all day, he calls upon Willa's pet boarding services. Whenever they're together, their chemistry is off-the-charts, but Willa is determined not to be hurt by him again, and Keane is averse to serious relationships. As Willa continues to watch the cat, she and Keane become closer, and soon they give in to their attraction. This was a very light read for the holiday season, however, I have read several books by Jill Shalvis that I have liked more. If you haven't read anything by her, and enjoy light-hearted romance, you may like The Trouble With Mistletoe. Also, see my reviews of some of the books from her Lucky Harbor series.

Writing in progress
I am currently working on my fourth contemporary romance novel, that may be titled, Twice as Tempting. This story features two characters who I introduced in my third book, A New Chapter. Kelly Cruise and Damian Kostas had a whirlwind holiday romance that ended abruptly when Damian returned to his home in California. Now he's back in Michigan, and this time he plans to stay. Will Kelly and Damian be able to pick up where they left off? Will Kelly get over the hurt from when he left the first time? Look for Twice as Tempting to be released in the winter of 2017!

Glory In Death by J.D. Robb
Glory In Death is the second book in the popular romantic suspense series by J.D. Robb aka Nora Roberts. In this story a successful prosecuting attorney is found dead in a seedy part of New York City. Enter police investigator Eve Dallas, who's put in charge of finding the killer. While Eve is busy interviewing friends and family members of the victim, another murder is committed in the same style, and this time a popular actress winds up dead. Robb weaves romance throughout the story, as the relationship between Eve and Roarke (introduced in the first novel) progresses. As a fan and a writer of romance novels, I particularly enjoyed the sections of the book that focus on Eve and Roarke, but the entire story is engaging. If you like romantic suspense novels, and haven't yet read anything by J.D. Robb, you may want to begin with book 1, Naked In Death.

Villa America by Liza Klaussmann
Villa America is a historical fiction novel revolving around a group of Americans who reached the height of fame and fortune during the roaring 1920's. The story centers around Gerald and Sara Murphy, a young, wealthy American couple who transplant themselves to the French Riviera, and build a beautiful mansion they name Villa America. The Murphy's begin to attract other noteworthy Americans, such as F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, and Ernest and Hadley Hemingway. They also invite a handsome American pilot, Owen Chambers, into their circle of friends, which calls Gerald's sexuality into question. The tale blends fact and fiction into a portrayal of the times, and the aspiring artists who lived during them. The author does a good job of contrasting a beautiful backdrop against some tumultuous events, as well as illustrating the nuances of marriage. If you enjoy reading about the 1920's, and getting a glimpse into the lives of famous authors/artists, you might like Villa America. For similar books, check out my reviews of The Paris Wife and Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald.

Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Fowler
Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, blends fact and fiction into an account of the lives of famous author, F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. The story shows how the Fitzgeralds got caught up in the lavish living of the rich and famous during the roaring 1920's, as did many of their friends. Parties, booze, affairs, and overspending plagued their marriage, yet the Fitzgeralds somehow managed to stay together. The author does a good job of portraying the times, and the intricacies of the famous couple's marriage. If you like to read about the 1920's, and are interested in the lives of famous authors/artists, you may enjoy this book. You may also want to read my reviews of The Paris Wife and Villa America.

Sex Machine by Marie Force
Sex Machine is a contemporary romance novel that combines steamy scenes with an emotional backstory. Blake has been a broken man ever since his fiancee died in a car accident years ago. Afterwards, he buried himself in his job as the owner of a construction company, and only allowed women into his life on a one-night-stand basis. When Honey (nickname), a friend who he's known for a long time, propositions him, he warns her that it will only be a one-time thing. Little did he know that she would get under his skin, and make him want more than just one night. Their relationship suffers until Blake finally overcomes his demons, and learns to love again. First off, there are a lot of explicit sex scenes in this book, so if you like a softer romance, this one is probably not for you. That said, there are some touching scenes, especially toward the end, when Blake confronts his tragic past. This is the first novel that I've read by Marie Force, and I will probably try another title. If you've already read her, or like your romance novels steamy, I would also recommend Christina Lauren and Lauren Blakely.
