Salt to the Sea - Captivating historical fiction.
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys is a captivating historical fiction novel surrounding a real, yet little known tragedy of WWII. The tale follows a group of European refugees as they flee their occupied lands for safety. Told from alternate viewpoints, this is a fast-paced engaging depiction of life during terrible times. With the Germans closing in on one side and the Russians on the other, those trapped in the middle banded together and departed for the Baltic Sea where they sought passage on ships that would carry them to safety.
With very little food and only the few possessions they could carry, they walked for miles, finding places to camp along the way. Danger lurked around every corner, and several people died en route. For those who made it to port, not all would be admitted passage. This story follows fictional characters: Joanna, a nurse, Florian, a German with a dangerous secret, Emilia, a pregnant Polish girl, and Alfred, a misguided young sailor. As they head out to sea, none of them can imagine the horror that awaits them, and their lives will be forever changed.
As an avid reader of WWII fiction, I had never heard of the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff. I found the story fascinating, and despite the terrible tragedy, there are messages of love, hope, and friendship. This is the second novel I've read by Ruta Sepetys, and I enjoyed them both.
