Inspiration for Writing Children's Books
My story about my love for writing stories began when I was in first grade.
I was extremely shy and did not say much.
The school must have thought there was something wrong with me because they sent me to see the school psychologist. I cried when he came to take me to his office and I didn't want to go.

Show and TellI don't even remember much about that psychologist, but what I do remember from first grade was where I shined.
We had show and tell in first grade and I loved it.
I loved showing off my stuffed toys, but the best show and tell ever was when I showed off the little story book that I wrote and illustrated all by myself on computer paper that my mom brought home from work.
The paper was in accordion fan style so I could create little books out of them. The only problem was I had to skip pages because there were green lines where I couldn't draw on some of the pages.
Well, while I was reading my story aloud to the class, one boy pointed out that I skipped a page. To me, that was a compliment because he wanted to know what happened in the story and didn't want to miss anything because he was enjoying it so much! I showed him that the page just had green lines on it and that I skipped that page and continued reading my story.
I don't remember what the story was about and I don't know what became of the story. I can't ask my mom if she ever kept it because she passed away when I was 16.
All I can guess is that the story had something to do with rainbows and unicorns because those were my two favorite things while growing up.
Oddly enough, I haven't yet published a story about a unicorn, but I do have a story in my head about The Plain Little Unicorn that I plan to publish at some point.
I often think about that boy who wanted to hear my story. He didn't care that my illustrations were drawn by a little kid. He didn't care that my story wasn't professionally edited.
He wanted to know what happened in the story!
That's the best book of all!

Scavenger Hunt Treasure Hunt Activities for Kids with Book Characters
Do you need some new ideas to get your kids moving and off electronic devices?

This is a fun scavenger hunt that can be made into a treasure hunt as well.
Have kids color the pictures with the letter clues first. This is great for fine motor coordination and creativity!
Hang the pictures up in a safe environment for kids to search for the clues and give them the handout to fill in with the letters based on the symbol clues. This is great for letter and shape recognition as well as spatial relations.
You can have each child hand in their papers for a special prize, or make it a contest to see who can decode the secret message first.
