Firefighter Fox is Here to Help

Our brand new book Firefighter Fox *(affiliate link) is a great way to teach kids about volunteering!

During Fire Prevention Week, there is so much education about preventing fires which is good, but we're not doing enough to teach kids about the importance of volunteering to help our communities.

We can teach kids all about fire safety, preventing fires, and what to do if there is a fire, but what good will that do if there are no volunteers or firefighters to show up in emergencies?

Firefighter Fox is based on actual events that took place at the fire company where my husband has volunteered for the past 28 years.

I have watched the fire company struggle to gain and keep volunteers over the years.

When my husband found an abandoned stuffed toy at his fire company that was at risk of closing, I thought it was time for The Underground Toy Society to help!

The book blurb:

Fox longs for a new home. He had been forgotten in a box with his friends for many years after the firefighters could not find enough volunteers to hold carnivals anymore. Will the toys successfully deliver their message to the firefighters without being seen? Or, will disaster strike, revealing the toys' secret and causing a collapse of The Underground Toy Society?

Check out our free printables * that can help kids learn about fire safety and volunteering that would be perfect for fire prevention week! When you download our free printable activities, you will receive:

coloring pages a word search a cut and paste activityHow can you help firefighters and your community?

You may think that being a volunteer firefighter means that you have to run into burning buildings and fight fires. While that may be something some do, it's not all that goes on at a fire company.

There are so many ways to volunteer. Even paid fire departments would appreciate help!

Just like my daughters in the story, you could help at fundraising events. Even kids could run games with prizes to help earn some money for the organization. Bake sales are another idea to raise funds. You could also respond to fire calls and offer support such as handing out water bottles/drinks or food during long calls. You could help operate the pumps to supply water from the fire truck. You could help pack hose after a fire call. You could help wash the fire truck. You could help spread the word that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are very important aspects of fire safety and they can help save lives!

There are many other ways to help. Contact your local fire department and ask how you can help. They would greatly appreciate it!

Even if you are unable to help, your local fire department can be a very valuable resource for fire safety. If you are in need of smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, please reach out to your local fire department to see if they can offer assistance.

First Day of Homeschool Ideas for 2023

When I first began homeschooling in the beginning of 2017, I thought it would be easy.

I had broken my leg and couldn't return to work for several months after surgery, so I decided to finally try homeschool.

I never intended to homeschool my daughters but God was pulling me in a direction I never thought I would go.

Keep reading to learn how to avoid the mistakes I made when we started to homeschool.

There is also a fun giveaway at the bottom to help you with ideas for your first day of homeschool for 2023!

First Day of Homeschool Ideas All About Me and Compound Words Game Giveaway details below Don't Make These Homeschool Mistakes Like I Did

My daughters started out in public school a few years prior, but common core math and other reasons drove us out of public schools.

We tried a private Christian school, but that was not working out for us either.

The Christian school we withdrew from allowed us to borrow the books my daughters had been using to finish out that school year so that was the easy part.

The hard part was the upcoming school year where I bought prepackaged curriculum full grade kits.

I was so determined to stay on track and do everything the teacher's manuals told us to do.

That turned out to be a ton of draining work that my kids hated.

My homeschooling journey did not start out the way I thought it would.

I wanted my daughters to enjoy learning.

Instead, they hated learning.

I soon realized that the boxed curriculum stuffs every single lesson into 180 days.

Did you finish your school books when you were in school?

Me neither.

So why was I trying to cram everything into the day that the curriculum was telling us to do?

I wanted my girls to get a good education and I thought that doing everything the books told us to do would put them ahead.

I ended up making my kids hate learning.

The whole point of homeschool is to allow kids freedom to explore their interests and have fun learning.

Here are a few ideas for your first day of homeschool to set the stage for a love of learning, instead of a dread of learning.

Ask your kids what they want to learn about Make a list together of the subjects they want to learn Start a journal Complete printable pages with fun writing prompts Play games Take turns reading aloud Make a list of all the books you and your kids want to read together over the school year Take a trip to the library to search for good books to read Create a plan to get outdoors every day as weather and safety permit Make a plan of all of the field trips you will take for the year Make a list of all the educational places you and your kids want to visit Make lunch together Take first day of school pictures Journal about the first day of school Have your kids write letters to other family members such as grandparents about how excited they are to be homeschooling and what they hope to learn

The first day of homeschool should be full of fun without stress.

Having fun on the first day of homeschool will set the stage for a love of learning instead of a dread of learning.

Make sure you check your state's homeschooling laws and regulations to fulfill the state requirements for your homeschool education. A great resource we use is HSLDA.

Now for our giveaway to help you have some fun on your first day of homeschool! The giveaways will begin August 8, 2023 and go through August 25, 2023! Our giveaway is great for kids in grades K through 2nd grades. For additional information on the prizes included, please visit our Teachers Pay Teachers store here: Creative Writing and Stories * or click here: Compound Words Activities * or here: All About Me Back to School Writing Prompts *

School Supplies List - Free Inventory Checklist and Game Printable

It's almost time to shop for school supplies, but are you prepared?

Before you shop, you should take inventory of what you already have to avoid overbuying!

We have the perfect inventory checklist printable to help and the best part is it's free to download!

We even have a game for you to make it fun for the whole family to find school supplies hiding in your home!

School Supplies Inventory

Shopping for back to school can get expensive.

The best thing you can do to help with your budget is to take inventory of the supplies you already have in your home before you shop.

Dig through your desks, drawers, couches, bookbags, purses, bookshelves, and bedrooms.

Look under cushions, couches, chairs, and dressers.

I have found several new packs of crayons, erasers, glues sticks, as well as new pens and pencils by searching around the house and cleaning.

Sure, it takes time, but if you get the whole family involved it can help.

Make a game out of it to see who can find the most items that can be used or reused.

We made you a few game cards to print out to see who can get "school" first!

You'll have fun and save some money in the long run when you find all of the lost pencils inside the couch cushions or the brand new packs of erasers shoved in the back of the desk drawer!

Now, of course, there will still be items that you will need.

So, we created a school supply checklist to help you take inventory and then make a plan for what you still need to buy.

Supporting Young Artists

When I was young, an author visited my elementary school.

From then on, I wanted to write and illustrate my own children's book.

The problem was, many people told me that I'd never make it as an author because it was too hard.

I was told I'd never make a living in the arts.

I believed them and stopped drawing and creating art.

Years later when I learned about self-publishing, I had hope of publishing my book.

Not only did I publish a book, I inspired my daughters to write and illustrate their own books as well.

Then, my younger daughter illustrated my most recent book, Liam Lion Lost at the Bloomsburg Fair

image:

Her cover has been nominated for the cover of the month contest for June 2023! Please help encourage my young artist and support her by voting for her book cover here:
https://allauthor.com/cover-of-the-mo...

Thank you so much! I believe it is important to encourage young artists to follow their dreams and keep trying!
