The Best Place to Find Great eBooks to Download for Reading Online

Whether you have space constraints or are on a limited budget, eBooks can be a great way for you to read some great stories online.

But where is the best place to find free or discounted eBooks to download?

The Best Place To Find eBooks

*Posts contain affiliate links. I may earn from qualifying purchases.

The Best Site to Download Free and Discounted eBooks

There are so many sites online to download free and discounted eBooks.

It can be frustrating as a reader to find good deals on eBooks without spending hours searching for sales or discounts.

The problem with some sites is that authors are limited in their ability to set their books for free or at a discount. Sometimes authors are only given a set number of days to offer you free or discounted eBooks.

That's where Smashwords comes in and the wonderful authors who publish books on the site.

There are coupon codes and great sitewide sales that authors can participate in to offer you free or discounted eBooks.

Authors have much more control over book prices when using Smashwords, so it is easier to find great eBooks for free or on sale. You might even get lucky and find an author who offers special coupon codes for their books!

The best time to find deals on Smashwords is during their site-wide sales, with the Read an eBook Week *(affiliate link) sale happening March 5-11, 2023!

There are so many different genres of books by so many different authors! You're sure to find an eBook that is perfect for you!

I have been in contact with many authors who publish through Smashwords and they have shared some great eBooks that will be on sale! We would love for you to take a look!

Some eBooks will be FREE and some will be on sale. Please double check prices carefully since I do not have control over the final price and I have organized this post by genre and author, NOT by price.

The Drabble Advent Calendar * will be on sale and looks like it is a fun way to countdown to Christmas with fun 100-word stories. It could inspire your students/homeschoolers to write their own 100-word stories!

Fantasy eBooks for Teens/Adults

A few more books that may be of interest to you are in the fantasy category for older readers such as teens and adults. The book descriptions look good to me but I have not read them yet.

There are so many different genres of books available on Smashwords.

Please note that there are many different formats to choose from when downloading eBooks from Smashwords. The eBooks can be read on many different devices. I prefer to read my eBooks on my desktop computer but there are many other ways to read these eBooks!

I have noticed a lot of the books recommended in this blog post are in epub format which I was not familiar with but have learned that you can use Google Play to save the file and read the books.

✍ Reviews are always greatly appreciated if you are able to do so! Reviews are helpful to authors as well as to other readers. Thank you!

❓ If you have any questions please let me know in the comments!

Let us know in the comments what your favorite genre of books is to read! Please note that this blog is geared toward children's books, parenting, and homeschooling so family-friendly comments would be greatly appreciated. Inappropriate comments may be removed. Thanks for understanding!

Social Media and Mental Health

How would you react if you were suspended from social media?

Keep reading to find out the bad news and the good news about my daughter's video accounts and how this has impacted her mental health.

*Posts may contain affiliate links. I may earn a commission from qualifying purchases. See disclosures below.

Suspended from Social Media

If you did not read the beginning of our story, you can catch up with this post here:

Disadvantages of Social Media for Students *

After two weeks of sending messages back and forth and waiting patiently, we received bad news about my daughter's video channel.

I had been hopeful that they would reinstate her account since she did not intentionally post spam or do anything deceptive on her channel.

Her videos were all of her cat doing silly things.

We received word that there is nothing more they can help us with and that her account was removed for spam policy violation.

I was provided a link and a "thx for understanding" statement.

I replied back, "Your link is not helpful at all. Please give an explanation from a human for what guidelines were broken. My teen daughter did nothing different than other video creators and we would like an explanation please."

I actually don't even know if I have been talking to a person or artificial intelligence.

It doesn't matter because now I am being ignored.

My daughter was extremely upset and felt like she was worthless and no good at her animations and drawings.

I tried to encourage her and find new platforms for her to utilize while we tried to figure things out.

We filed a second appeal to see if that would work.

Appeals are only able to be filed every two weeks.

The second appeal was denied.

At this point I think the cat's channel is gone.

My daughter is still upset but I think she's finally ready to move onto other things.

I'm afraid to keep pushing the issue because everyone in my family has video channels.

What if I make them mad and they delete all of us?

I just don't know.

There is some good news though!

We watched some videos and learned how to recover my daughter's other accounts.

The other accounts were actually way more important because she worked very hard on her animations and music videos.

She wrote two original songs on her other channel and it would have been a shame to lose that.

We were able to add a different email and also add managers to her other accounts.

Let me tell you there were happy tears when we were able to log into her other accounts.

But still, there is sadness that the cat's channel is gone.

It had been doing well and gaining subscribers and we don't even know what community guidelines were broken.

We have a few guesses, but since we can't get an official answer, we will never truly know.

We're not even sure if we'll be able to file another appeal since I've seen others say there is a limit to the number of appeals that can be filed.

So here are some thoughts about what may have gone wrong.

On every video, she posted that her cat wanted to get 1M subscribers before her hooman (cat talking here, not me). She saw others doing this and thought it was okay to do but maybe not? Possible overuse of hashtags or use of trademarked/brand name hashtags which may not have been allowed. Posting comments from her cat's channel onto her other channels. Maybe cross posting is not allowed? Posting too many videos at a time. Posting videos that were only a few seconds in length. Posting videos that appeared similar to each other. I mean, how many different videos can you post of a cat?

I don't think we will ever know.

What I do know is that we do not have control over our social media accounts.

They can suspend anyone at any time for any reason.

All our hard work could be gone in an instant.

This has affected our whole household since we are all creators.

It has really made us stop and think about backing up our work and trying out other platforms, even though that isn't a guarantee either.

It's frustrating, but we have to keep going and stay positive.

We cannot let these social media platforms define us and destroy our mental health.

We are creative and strong!

I am going to be creating some positive affirmation printables * soon. Stay tuned!

Let us know in the comments below if you have ever been suspended or banned from your social media accounts.

Disadvantages of Social Media for Students

You will probably agree that social media can have some pretty big disadvantages for students.

But there is one major disadvantage that you probably have never even thought about.

Keep reading to find out what recently happened to my teenage daughter's video channel and how it has impacted our entire family.

Disadvantages of Social Media for Students

*Posts may contain affiliate links. I may earn a commission from qualifying purchases. See disclosures below.

Electronic Devices, Social Media, Oh My!

I was against my daughters having phones or electronic devices when they were young.

We would go out to restaurants and local parades and I would see very young children watching videos on their parents' phones.

I would be grateful that my kids were sitting and talking with me, coloring, or enjoying people-watching.

When my older daughter was in sixth grade, her teacher told his class that if they behaved, they would each be able to pick anything from Amazon for Christmas!

Guess what my daughter picked.

A Fire Tablet.

So began our electronic use in our household.

After we started homeschooling, my girls had a little extra time and wanted to start creating content instead of consuming content.

Since I am a children's book author, they wanted to follow in my footsteps and create video stories.

Dangers of Social Media

I taught my daughters to watch out for scammers and trolls and to delete comments as necessary.

I told them to not let mean comments get them down and to just delete them.

My husband and I set rules that the girls were not allowed to chat with strangers and to keep their personal information private.

I made sure to tell them the rules I had learned along the way to avoid getting flagged such as not posting comments too fast, which has gotten me into social media jail.

But at least on those platforms, I was only in jail. I never got completely shut down and eventually was allowed back onto the platforms.

Everything had been going pretty well with my daughters' video channels. My older daughter got monetized which made her younger sister work harder at her own videos to achieve the same goal.

She decided to start a fun channel making videos about her cat.

The cat was doing very well with short videos and obtained more subscribers than my daughter's main channel. On a side note, the cat earned more subscribers than me!

And then, it happened.

My daughter checked her channels one morning but did not see her cat's channel.

Upon logging into her email, she learned that the cat's channel had been suspended!

We filed an appeal which was denied that same night. The message said that they decided to keep her account suspended.

The worst part of all of this is that she lost access to her two other channels because they are on the same email address.

All her hard work is now lost in the abyss of the internet.

Her two other channels are still there, but she cannot log into them to do anything with them.

She had some videos scheduled for the next few months, but after that, her channel will be useless to her.

We searched the internet to find out how to get her channel back. There is a team on Twitter that can be contacted for help.

I sent them a message asking for help in getting her channel reinstated.

I have asked for updates a few times now and they keep telling me that they will keep me posted.

The worst part of social media

I never would have even thought how this could impact my daughters because I never realized that this video platform has the right to shut down any account at any time for any reason.

They don't even have to tell you the reason.

Her channels never got any warnings, strikes, or communications that she had done anything wrong.

She was just all of a sudden shut down without warning or reason.

This has caused my daughter to think she did something very wrong and that her work is no good.

Artists are hard on themselves as it is, but to get shut down without warning or reason has had very negative consequences that have made me wish we had never started this online journey in the first place.

She asks me about a million times a day if her channel will be back soon.

At first, I was very optimistic and told her to be patient because she did nothing wrong.

I was sure after contacting the team on Twitter that her account would be back in a few short days.

They have been nice to me and reply back pretty quickly, but they keep telling me that they are still working on it.

After over a week, I'm not sure what is going to happen.

One thing I do know is that we will not give up!

If needed, we will try out other platforms for her to share her wonderful talent.

I have been thinking about trying to figure out how to put her artwork onto Creative Market*(affiliate link). I have been an affiliate for them for a while and it is a great platform for finding some neat graphics and photos for your design projects. The below photo is an affiliate link and I may earn a commission for qualifying purchases.

Activities to celebrate the 100th Day of School

When I was in Kindergarten, I remember being so proud of myself when I was able to finally count to 100!

Back then, there weren't really any 100th day of school celebrations.

When my daughters were in school, I was surprised when they celebrated the 100th day of school every year.

Since there are so many celebrations, it can be hard to come up with new ideas for activities to celebrate the 100th day.

So I decided to create some fun 100 days of school printables * to help you!

Click to view the fun activities-color 100 teddy bears; number 100; color by number *

Color 100 teddy bears

There are 12 x 9 teddy bears on the sheet for a total of 108 teddy bears. Direct students to color only 100 teddy bears. To check their papers quickly, only 8 teddy bears should remain not colored.

Number 100

There are 100 dots inside the number 100 that can also be traced. The number 1 has 29 dots, the first zero has 36 dots, and the second zero has 35 dots. Students can color these, or you can use this as a sensory bin or fine motor activity for students to place or paste 100 objects into the circles. There is a second sheet for students to count and enter the number of dots that add up in each one to add up to 100.

Color by Number

Color numbers 1-6 to reveal the number 100!

We hope you have a great 100th day of school with our fun 100 days of school printables *!

Let us know in the comments below how you celebrate the 100th day of school!

Gift Ideas for Kids Who Have Everything

What do you do when your kids have way too much stuff and you dread more entering your home for Christmas?

What do you buy for kids who seem to have everything under the sun?

Keep reading for great gift ideas for kids who have everything*(affiliate link)!

My Kids Have Everything so What Gift Ideas are Left?

It is so hard to know what to buy for kids who have everything.

They already have so much stuff so what is left?

Experience gifts are a great way to support local small businesses while getting unique gifts that kids will love.

Experiences could be anything from tickets or passes to local theme parks, skating rinks, bowling allies, or recreation centers.

You could purchase the tickets or passes and put them inside a box to wrap up to put under the tree or inside stockings.

If your kids really want a stuffed animal, check out these stuffed animal storage solutions!* You can get a shell and then stuff it with extra clothes, blankets, or toys to keep rooms cleaner! It would make it more fun to clean up too! *affiliate link

If you really want to get kids excited about giving to others instead of always being on the receiving end of gifts, try some cute wooden ornaments*! Kids could decorate them and hand them out to others.

You could even decorate a few and personalize them with your kids' names and dates for great keepsakes! *affiliate link

Another great gift idea is something that can double as a toy and a storage space. I bought my daughters each a dollhouse bookshelf* when they were young and we still use it today for storing our homeschool supplies.

When I was little, my sister and I loved our play tent. We would play inside for hours and took many toys inside that tent.

So when your kids take their toys inside the play tent*, you might not stress about seeing the mess!

A personalized blanket* would be perfect to go inside the tent to read a book* that can teach them the importance of helping others!

Check this idea list * for even more gift ideas to give to kids who have everything!

"Reviewed By Amy Louise Hill for Readers' Favorite

The Funny Foods Best Friends by Janiece E Adams is an educational picture book for young children. Peppsie the Pizza desperately wants to find a friend and he sets out on a mission to find one. He approaches some flowers, and even the sun, and asks if they would be his friends. They all say no, leaving Peppsie feeling hopeless. Whilst sitting alone on a bench, an orange named Rolly sits beside him and asks why he is sad. Peppsie is in luck, as Rolly is the head of "The Friend Finding Committee" and offers to help him. Peppsie meets the other members and learns a lot about how to make friends. What did Peppsie learn? And how many friends do you think he made? The Funny Foods Best Friends was a pleasure to read. The talented young author Janiece E Adams has created a beautiful story based on making friends. Janiece has told her story through the unique character of Peppsie the Pizza. The young reader will be hooked from the moment they are introduced and will enjoy reading about his journey of finding a friend. Children can struggle to find friends for many reasons, and that is why I'm glad books like this exist. I was impressed with Adams's work and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. Keep up the good work, Janiece, your beautiful words will help children all over the world."
